My man hung on a year too long. He had a garbage year and finally caught a whuppin for it.

This one:

The worst part about it was that it happened on my goddamn birthday. Not many people can say that their team blew a chance at a Super Bowl berth on their birthday. I can.

The worst near-loss I've witnessed as a fan was Week 9 of last year. Losing at halftime 21-0 to a winless Bucs team wasn't fun to sit there and watch.

But the 2012 Falcons playoff game was pretty rough. A field goal away from 3 straight NFC Championship games.

Re: What's the worst loss you've experienced as a fan

Since there were no Saints fans in the 1980's I'll go ahead and speak for them. Well, maybe there were a few since Bum Phillips was the coach and he was pretty cool. Anyway, it was probably the wildest meltdown I've ever seen and only a few die-hards even saw the ending.

1984 Saints at Cowboys. A rare Sunday night game that set the NFL record with a 9:51 ET start time (not sure why but possibly because the Reagan vs Carter Presidential debate was on that night.) With less than 14:00 left in the 4th quarter the Saints have the ball and are winning 27-6 (they rushed for 235 yards with the help of Earl Campbell.) Ok, game is over - Cowboy fans go home, TV's were being shut off because it was way past bed time etc.

Dallas forced the Saints to punt and...BLOCKED! Shortly after Tony Dorsett pushes it in from 3 yards out. Score is now 27-13.

Dallas then kicks it to the Saints returner who brings it back 65 yards! More TV's shut off, more fans go home. But the Saints stall out and Morten Andersen misses wide right on a 45 yard field goal.

Dallas brings in QB Danny White who was bumped in the pre-season by Gary Hogenboom. If I remember correctly Danny's own teammates didn't even want him around. At first they sputter but get it together and mount an 88 yard TD drive in 13 plays. Score is now 27-20 with 3:59 remaining.

Three plays later came the defining moment of the game. Saints quarterback Ken Stabler was sacked by Randy White and fumbled into the end zone which led to a wild scramble for the ball. Jim Jeffcoat recovered for the tying score with 2:53 remaining.

Amazingly, the Cowboys actually got the ball back two more times in the final 1:20 of the game on two Stabler interceptions, but could not move the ball into scoring position. The game would go into overtime.

The Cowboys won the coin toss in overtime. From their own 29 yard line Danny White attempted a pass to Tony Hill who was interfered with, which resulted in a 24 yard penalty. Then White completed a 15 yard pass to Renfro to set up Septien for the winning field. Septein kicked a 41 yard field goal to complete the comeback and the Cowboys won the game 30-27. The comeback was the Cowboys biggest in team history.

The next day Ken Stabler retired for good.

Super Bowl 44 vs NO has to be #1 for me. That pick 6 man....... about as heartbreaking as it gets.

A close 2nd though was the 2005 Divisional game vs Pittsburgh. Still bitter about that loss. IMO the best Colts team of the Peyton era, even over the 2006 team(where our defense just happened to get hot in the playoffs). Wasn't even how we lost, just the fact that we did. Hard to get a more complete team than that with as good of a QB as we had.

I became a Saints fan at the start of the Mora era. My worst Saints loss was easily the '93 playoff game ('92 season) against Philly at the SuperDome. The floodgates let loose in the 4th quarter.

Philly 36 Saints 20

Re: What's the worst loss you've experienced as a fan

Plenty. Way too many for a generally miserable franchise. I can't even begin to talk about them all.

First thing that jumps out in my mind was the three game stretch in 2010 that buried our season. Blowing the game against the Chargers late on an Andre Johnson miscue, then the next week a fumble giving the Jaguars possession then the Hail Mary then the week after that taking the lead against the Jets with like 50 seconds left only to let Mark Sanchez march down the field and the Jets got a game-winning TD. I punched a hole in my wall after that.

Would have been 7-3 after those three heartbreakers in a row with the Titans (who we beat 20-0) coming up after that. 8-3 going into the final five games of the season. But what did we do? Oh, we lost to the Eagles then the Ravens on MNF (after an amazing comeback) in late fashion too. And let's not forget the Tim Tebow-led Broncos who beat us by 1 in Week 16, but that was neither here nor there at that point. 4-2 to start, 2-8 to close. Six of those last 8 losses were in spectacularly ridiculous fashion.

**** the 2010 season overall. Historically bad defense. But that led to Wade Phillips coming in, money being spent to upgrade the defense, and of course, the selection of JJ Watt in the 2011 NFL Draft.
