He is. But he'll be restricted and arbitration-eligible -- he doesn't become an unrestricted free agent until 2007. Luongo doesn't want to stay in Florida unless they really overpay him, so he'll likely sign a one-year deal with the Panthers this offseason and be traded before the '07 trade deadline.

Re: NHL Trade Deadline

The team I'm most curious about regarding the trade deadline: Toronto. Will they consider trading away some of their veterans for youth, picks and cap space, or will they continue to mortgage their future for "big name" veterans in order to fool "Maple Leaf Nation" into thinking they're still contenders?

Re: NHL Trade Deadline

I see the Flyers being very active near the deadline. I see them picking up another goalie to replace Esche, some defense help, and another wing possibly.

What, "the goalie of the future"? (inside joke for Canucks fans)

I'm guessing he stays, because I don't think he's starter material for any of the teams looking for goaltending. He's inconsistent and a well-known flake around the league (even by goalie standards). Slats might be able to pawn him off on the Oilers if all of Edmonton's other plans fall through, but I doubt it.

I think Esche stays put as Philly's backup. Especially given the post-Olympic schedule, it's important for contenders to have two goalies that they have at least some confidence in.

McKenzie on SC said Cujo might return to the Oilers. Morris and Gauthier may be available if they can't be locked up long term by the Coyotes.

Ed Belfour might be on the market.

Well, Cujo wants to stay in here in Phoenix, and somehow Gretzky still believes the 'yotes can make the playoffs. He might not be moved, it depends on what is offered for him. Morris probably will stay, just because he's still recovering from ankle surgery and won't play till early next week. A team would have to be taking a chance picking him up.

And I'm sure Belfour is on the market, they won't put up with him any longer.

Re: NHL Trade Deadline

As an Oiler fan, I pray we pick up a goaltender to replace the three man rotation we have in net right now. Birons a definite maybe, but he's a secondary option to Raycroft or Luongo (obviously). The names Joseph and Belfour have ever been tossed around if the Oil decide to go the rent a goalie route rather than pick up a long term starter.

They could also use some 4th line help, a **** disturber like Tyson Nash or Dallas Drake. Most nights it seems like Laraque thinks the lock outs still on.
