It's possible. There's a much greater chance a team will work in Winnipeg, Hamilton, or Quebec City.

It means the NHL should be far more careful about which markets it chooses. Put franchises in places that have a better chance of succeeding. Hockey was NEVER going to work in Phoenix, but SLC or Vegas or KC magically will? Really?

I'm not sure how you define "success". Both those teams were in the bottom 10 in both ticket revenue and local TV ratings. The bottom 10 teams in terms of local TV ratings (numbers, not percentage):

21. Colorado
22. Anaheim
23. Dallas
24. Columbus
25. Phoenix
26. Carolina
27. Nashville
28. Tampa Bay
29. Atlanta
30. Florida

This is despite the fact that half of these teams have won Stanley Cups over the last 10 seasons. But hey, I bet Indy and Vegas will buck this trend! Why not give them a shot?

This is complete nonsense. Please tell me why the North Stars "failed" and the Wild succeeded. Magic?

Winnipeg and Quebec City aren't hockey-crazy markets? Have you ever been to Canada?

A quick fix? How is moving a team to a hockey market a quick fix?

That teams placed in markets that like hockey make money and lots of it, regardless of market size or on-ice success. That's the whole idea, isn't it? Supply and demand? Put teams where people like hockey and are willing to pay for it? When the NFL had their most recent expansion, they chose Houston, figuring that Texas likes football. Wow. Novel idea.

Those aren't the "big" Canadian teams, they're ALL the Canadian teams. ALL of the Canadian teams were more successful than Detroit, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, and San Jose. The Oilers are far and away the smallest market in the league and finished dead last, yet they made more money on ticket sales than the Penguins or Red Wings. More people watched the horrible Oilers on local TV than those who watched the Avalanche, Stars, Ducks, and Blue Jackets combined, despite having a population that's a small fraction of any of those other markets. If the Oilers can generate more gate revenue than the Red Wings, the Jets can generate more gate revenue than the freaking Blue Jackets.

Re: Three Teams On the Move?

The idea of a franchise in Las Vegas is so damn stupid. I don't have numbers or anything to back this up, its just my feeling, but wouldn't it be like a team in Florida? Not many people live and grow up in Las Vegas. Many people are transplants from other places. And therefore already have their team allegiances. Just because it's populous doesn't mean it's a good idea to put a team there. And then the casinos and betting issues that could arise. So I think that's just a terrible place to place a team for any pro sport, let alone a more niche sport like ice hockey.

Please, put a team or two back in Canada. There, Seattle, Portland, or somewhere in the Northeast. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Some new news:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hocke...le-talks_N.htm

Quote:
Talks between Glendale and Ice Edge Holdings, one of the groups interested in purchasing the Phoenix Coyotes, broke down late Monday afternoon, according to Grant Woods, Ice Edge's legal counsel.
Quote:
Meanwhile, the Glendale City Council should vote Tuesday evening to enter an agreement that would guarantee to the National Hockey League that the city would cover the team's operating deficits for the 2010-11 season if a permanent buyer is not found.
I don't see how that is going to happen.
How do you tell taxpayers that they have to cover $20M losses every year when the town is already $14.7M in the hole?

If this was in a hockey hotbed, most voters would cry foul if their counsel reps didn't do something to save their team.
But I'm not so sure the residents of Glendale will want this. Considering they were only getting 5,000 fans for a great majority of their games, I don't think Sally Housecoat and Joe Lunchpail are going to be happy plunking down extra $$$ to save a team they care nothing about.

Re: Three Teams On the Move?

Fingers crossed for tonight. If the Cavs win and the Coyotes are goners, I will be a very happy man.

Re: Three Teams On the Move?

LOL! What a contrast in hockey markets.

The Coyotes can't get fans out even though they have a team, and then you have the Winnipeg Free Press streaming the counsel meeting live to see if they'll get a team back.

Insane.
