I wonder if the win now push is also them trying to get the city to get an arena now too.

If the Flames make the playoffs again, they'll be fine with this deal. Flames arguably have the best top 4 in the league with Hamonic, Brodie, Giordano and Hamilton.

For fun, here's my list of who I would have taken had I been drafting for the Wings compared to who the Wings took. In 5 years, I can look back and see how little I know.

9th. Michael Rasmussen - Gabriel Vilardi
38th. Gustav Lindstrom - Maxime Comtois
71st. Kaspar Kotkansalo - Dmitri Samorukov
79th. Lane Zablocki - Ivan Lodnia
83rd. Zachary Gallant - Nikita Popugayev
88th. Keith Petruzzelli - Keith Petruzzelli (you hit one Kenny!)
100th. Malte Setkov - Matthew Strome
131st. Cole Frasier - Jan Drozg
162nd. John Adams - Skyler Brind'Amour
164th. Reilly Webb - Alexander Chemlevski
193rd. Brady Gilmour - Kristians Rubins (Rubins went undrafted; he plays for Medicine Hat)

Re: NHL 2017 Off-Season Thread

For me, I don't think I'd really re-do the Leafs draft. Did great job with their picks, not much else you could ask for.

The first 3 picks of this draft the Leafs took:
A previously projected top 3 pick(who is a RHD)
A 6'7 RHD
A goalie

Leafs main weaknesses....RHD and goalie depth. Addressed instantly in this draft. If all works out, we might one day see:
Rielly-Liljegren
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Rasanen

Which would be crazy.

So.... Who saw Mcdavid getting 13m for 8 years. Not 13m total, 13m cap hit!

I don't think it's that surprising considering he had 100 points this season, and conceivably hasn't hit his ceiling yet since he's only 20. Granted, I haven't followed the NHL closely until the past few years, so I don't really know what $13m a year is in context to the NHL cap. But it makes sense that a generational talent like McDavid gets one of the most lucrative deals ever.

Next highest cap hit isn't even 11m.

Not that he doesn't deserve it, but just seems like so much that could hurt Oilers long term. And NHL too has teams who draft well getting punished by losing guys they draft because of not getting to retain them due to cap.

One fan suggestion I read is maybe give homegrown talent a discount
Like Mcdavid would still get 13m AAV, but because he's home grown talent, Oilers get 25% discount on cap hit so he's only around 10m hit for them. Would encourage teams to draft well and retain guys while giving guys incentives to stay. If you really care about your team, you can do so without really needing to take a paycut.

Cba is up in 2 years I think, so will be interesting to see impact a deal like this has. Especially with guys like Tavares, Price, Matthews being FA in next year or two.

Re: NHL 2017 Off-Season Thread

If anyone's worth the amount, I guess it's McDavid.
The sad part is, there's a very good chance he'll never get those numbers again.
Crosby's best offensive year was his 2nd season. The same may happen to McDavid.
Next year, he'll be asked to be better defensively, so his offense will take a backseat.

For $13M+ a season, I want 100 points every year of that contract.

He could get 100 points a season.... If nhl ever fixes its goal scoring issue. They need to separate the stars from the average guys.
