Re: The Official 2017-18 Regular Season Talk Thread

Placing this here as I think it's relevant considering it's new to the '17/18 season.

Last night's exhibtion games featured a lot of penalties due to:
- new slashing standard
- new faceoff rules.

Hockey players seem to be pretty stubborn/dumb/ignorant so I think it'll take them till Christmas to figure out that they can't tap hands anymore (why this was even in the rulebook to begin is ridiculous #NHLbeingtheNHL).
They'll probably figure it out just in time for playoffs when penalties aren't called.

The faceoff rule is crazy too:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/n...ff-violations/
You can't have your feet over the hash marks near the faceoff dot;

Some guys got tossed and even penalized early on.

A season ago, I heard someone suggest that the players keep their feet behind those lines, and the tip of their sticks in the white of the dot.
The ref places the puck in the middle of the circle and then blows a special whistle to initiate the draw.
IMO, that's the best solution. Make it about quick reflexes.
In Europe you're not allowed to use your feet.

I also found it interesting that several players liked the changes, but doubted it'll be called in the playoffs.
Most likely that'll be the case.

Hockey is the most defensive of all the major sports in terms of rule changes. Guys know they get away with so much, then complain when something finally happens about it.

Still waiting on the day goalies finally get fixed.

You and me both.
If you google the topic, seems like this is something that's been discussed for well over a decade.
Still, the NHL sits on its hands while hiring people like Chris Pronger and George Parros to make sure players safety is maintained.
Maybe they'll hire JS Giguere to tackle inflated goalie gear next.

Re: The Official 2017-18 Regular Season Talk Thread

Goalie equipment has been one of more talked about changes in NHL for years, but nothing noticeable has ever happened. I don't get how it's possible to have something in the game which negatively impacts it, the players themselves admit is an unfair advantage and are laughing at getting away with it, and has been discussed at length for all these years, but nothing has been done about it.

Can't use some integrity of the game or record books as reason for no change because backup goalies today got higher sv% than past era Hall of famers.

Lockout coming in a few years and Bettman contract is up 1 year after that. I wonder if nhl might decide now is finally the right time to go in a diff direction. Knowing them, Bettman either stays or Daly takes over and nothing's different.

The Pionk Spin(TM) made its NHL debut I see.

Also, haven't those faceoff rules been on the books forever? If you're gonna have a rule, might as well enforce it, right?

Re: The Official 2017-18 Regular Season Talk Thread

First Saturday night hockey game for the Leafs this year! In Buffalo too so it's basically a home game. Majority of their NHL roster is playing tonight, but the biggest names like Matthews,Nylander,Rielly among others aren't.

I like how we have home and home back to backs. Entire pre-season schedule for Leafs is basically that. Don't get why NHL can't do this for regular season, specifically with regards to the divisional games. Outside of reducing number of games or starting season earlier, this is really only other way I can think of that'd make back to backs much less grueling.
