What if you just adjust the base rosters you are using, increase speed and DAC in the guys you think appropriate that way rookies coming in wouldn't be so far apart.

Yeah I didnt have a full 6's team most of the time we were playing, but mostly played with a min of 4 guys. Always with a user goalie, which I think helped us in terms of winning more...

I find that doing curls in the offensive zone helps some. Not being in one place sort of moving around creating passing lanes. Back door plays are always my favorite. Scoring seems to be harder on AI...
