Re: Jacksonville Jaguars Team Thread
Jaguars Defense Lead Team Into AFC Championship Game
Houston TX - 12/11/13
The Jaguars rolled into Houston, Texas early yesterday focused and determined to prove they were the true AFC South Division Champions.
That fact is hard to argue as they dismantled the Texans, 38-17.
The Jaguars' offense sputtered out of the gate, the defense did not. Although they allowed a FG on the Texans' first drive, the Jags defense was everywhere and making physical plays. After a few big hits by Carlos Dansby, Drake Reed and Johnathon Cyprien, it appeared as though the Texans were scared to catch the ball as they had a number of drops.
The usually crisp Matt Shaub was flushed outside the pocket most of the game, leading to errant throws. If a pivotal play early in the 2nd quarter, the Jaguars were faced with a 4th and 1 from the Texans' 45 yard line. Rather than try for the first down they elected to punt. Matt Anger came on and pinned the Texans back on their own 2 yard line. Two plays later, the Jaguar defense sacked Shaub, forced a fumble, and recovered to give them the 10-3 lead (Johnathon Cyprien on the sack strip, rookie DE Haugunin on the TD scoop).
Rookie QB Andres Waksmundzki looked composed out there, going 16/25 for 305 yards 1TD 0INT. But the story of the game was the effective rushing game of the Jaguars. Clifton Knowles and Jordan Todman handled most of the snaps, both averaging over 6 yards per carry. Clifton Knowles added 2 TDs, bringing his total up to 7 for the playoffs.
The Jaguars will be on the road again next week as they will play the winner of the Ravens vs Dolphins game.
