The Return of Formation Subs in Madden NFL 17

Madden NFL 17 Associate Game Designer, Ryan "RG" Glick and the Madden team have sent us this exclusive blog covering the return of formation subs. Make sure to read it and post your thoughts.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Madden has had its fair share of features come and go over its 27 year history.  One beloved Madden & NCAA feature that sadly was lost in the Gen 4 console transition was the ability to save formation specific substitution packages.  Now in Madden NFL 17 it gives me great joy to announce the return of formation substitutions within franchise mode.

Before explaining how formation subs will work in Madden NFL 17, I want to say THANK You to our community because you truly were the ones who really drove this feature into Madden NFL 17.

Now for a little back story about formation subs. It was originally a feature that was “out of scope” for Madden NFL 17 (meaning it was not scheduled to make it into the game).  That was until myself and the Madden NFL development team started to take note of all the support the feature was getting from the community.  All of your  and the GameChangers tweets, forum posts, wish lists, and feedback helped the team here at Tiburon know that this was a must have feature if we were serious about making significant changes to improving Franchise mode.  This was the type of feedback that made doing whatever work necessary to get this feature into Madden NFL 17.

We are excited because the addition of formation subs is an example of our passionate community’s coming together to get a feature into the game.  So to all of you vocal Madden fans out there, please keep up the good work and continue to deliver feedback as you can make tremendous impact on the game.

Now let’s talk about how the feature actually works. For those that are not familiar with formation subs, a quick high-level definition is that players now have the ability to set & save starters in specific positions based on formation regardless of how the players are sorted in the depth chart.

Once in Franchise mode, the mechanic works as such:

  • From the Franchise mode Hub scroll to the Manage Tab and select the My Coach menu.
  • From the My Coach menu Select Formation Subs
  • The playbooks that load within the formation subs menu are the playbooks that you have set within the schemes section of the My Coach menu.

  • Once in the Formation Subs menu toggle between offense and defense by simply pressing LB or RB (L1 or R1 on PS4).
  • Selected to edit offense or defense and then simply scroll through the different formations by navigating the L-stick while holding down LT (L2 on PS2).  Scroll over a formation you want to edit and let go of LT and the formation will populate. Then let go of LT they can use the L-stick to scroll through the different sets within the formation they selected.

  • Next scroll to and highlight the set you want to edit they press the A button (X on PS2) which then allows you to scroll through the players within the selected set.  Then select the player you want to change by pressing the A button (X on PS2) after you've scrolled over and highlighted the player.
  • From here scroll through the roster of players to choose your replacement.  Pressing the A button (X on PS2) on the selected replacement player subs him in for that formation.

  • You can also reset a sub made to any given formation by selecting the formation you want to reset by pressing the RT button (R2 on PS4).
  • When you are done making formation subs simply press B (O on PS4) to back out the formation subs menu and enter game to view your changes.

Some additional things to keep in mind when using the feature are:

  • Formation subs carry from game to game unless you switch your playbook or resets the formation sub.
  • You can still make formation subs when in game by using our legacy playcall screen formation sub feature.  This is done by picking plays by formation when at the play call screen by pressing RB when highlighting the formation you want to edit.

The list of eligible players who can be subbed in at each position from the formation sub menu is:

  • QB = QB, K, P
  • HB = HB, FB
  • FB = FB, HB, TE
  • WR = WR, TE, HB
  • TE = TE, FB, LT, RT, MLB
  • LT = LT, LG, C, RG, RT
  • LG = LG, LT, C, RG, RT
  • C = C, LG, LT, RG, RT
  • RG = RG, RT, C, LG, LT
  • RT = RT, RG, C, LG, LT
  • LE - LE, RE, DT, ROLB, LOLB
  • RE = RE, LE, DT, ROLB, LOLB
  • DT = DT, LE, RE
  • LOLB = LOLB, ROLB, MLB, RE, LE
  • ROLB = ROLB, LOLB, MLB, RE, LE
  • MLB = MLB, ROLB, LOLB
  • CB = CB, FS, SS
  • FS = FS, SS, CB
  • SS = SS, FS, CB
  • K = K, P
  • P = P, K

Again, Thank You to the entire Madden Community for your constructive feedback year in and year out.  We look forward to watching you all continue to use your passion to make Madden the best it possibly can be.

Sincerely,

Ryan (RG) Glick

Associate Game Designer

If you don't want to use 32 team control, you should PROBABLY be able to simply create the opposing HC for your CPU opponent before you play them in any given week and then set up that coach's formation subs...

After playing the game, you SHOULD be able to simply "retire" that CPU HC before advancing to the next week...

It's a variation on last's year's Drive Goals workaround...

In M16, after I created that week's CPU opponent HC, I was able to buff up their depth chart / match their player styles to their settings in the Scheme Menu and "optimize" my opponent before playing them...

IF things work the same way this year, I can now add maximising their formation sub settings to that mix...

Not ideal, but keeps the CPU teams trading amongst each other and competitive in FA and the draft without my USER input on their clubs, like 32 team control does...

yea I didn't have 16, but iused the workaround in 15, the auto sub thing is why I skipped 16, too many years without it, I think though ill be getting this one, I wonder if the workaround will still work cause id rather not have to control all 32
-----------------------------------------------------------
I have 16 lol I forgot I even had it and used the workaround

You can still do it while playing around with it in practice mode

Apologies if this has been answer but are you able to use formation subs with custom play books? I'm under the impression you can't for some reason but it would be great to get it confirmed.

Thanks guys

I don't believe so, I haven't been able to find this in the cfm coach menu.

The short answer is "no you cannot."

The long answer (citing what Mr. Price posted earlier in this thread) is that, if you set your team's playbook to one of the default in-game playbooks, make your formation subs, and then choose your custom playbook in the team select screen, any formation subs for common formations between the two playbooks still apply. Any formations your playbook has that the default playbook you chose originally you will not be able to set formation subs for, because the formation subs UI relies on the existing in-game playbooks.

Thanks for the answer CM and information Mr. Price. Has this bee confirmed? Just to make sure I'm reading this correctly. Example. If I pick the Jets playbook and make my changes to those formation in the default playbook and then use the same formations in my CPB they'll still work?

From the way I understood the explanation, what you describe should work. However, if you were to add a formation to this playbook - say you really like I-Form but the Jets playbook didn't have it for some reason - you won't be able to set any formation subs for I-Form because you're using the Jets' playbook as your base, and the Jets' playbook is what the formation subs UI sees.

I defer to Mr. Price for confirmation, however.

Just tested this, it does work. I added all 23 plays to the Jets Pistol Slot formation in my CPB. Went into CFM subbed in every 2nd string player. Then went into practice mode and a regular season game and sure enough everyone in that formation was my 2nd string players that I subbed in. Nice find for the workaround Mr. Price.

no DT at TE sorry JJ Watt - but finally this looks great!!!

# 191 DirectFX @ 08/24/16 06:40 PM
Does this mean no Wildcat formations? No RB/WR at QB ? Current NFL you have more WR that were former QB that could be subbed in for a trick play here and there, just off the top of my head you have Pryor, B.Miller, Edelman etc that could go to QB with no problems but I guess we can't ..
Also the QB would need to lineup outside at WR to complete the deception but seems that's restricted too ...

Can't sub a SS into the LB position in Nickel either, like the 1-4-6 Big Dime had last year. It's missing from this year's 4-3 defense books and you can't even create it now. Useless.

Question - is there a way to sub for kickoff and kickoff returns? I can't find kickoffs on the special teams list.

Also, is there a way to get a custom playbook as my "scheme" so I can edit the plays I use instead of a scheme I don't use?

No formation subs for Kickoffs/KO Returns.

That would be a nightmare for people that actually want a somewhat grounded sim experience.

Then you get people who want Vince Wilfork at QB.

The formation substitution position rules were copied from what has existed in the in-game formation subs interface for years, which is why those rules still exist in the out-of-game UI.

For some reason, when I change my playbook in the "schemes" section in CFM, the change doesn't stick when I go to set formation subs.

I use the Lions, but I use the NE Coach playbook for offense. I switched to that playbook in Schemes.

When I go to make formation subs, only lets me sub for the Lions (Jim Caldwell) playbook.

I'm super mad that any signing/release/injury gets your Formation subs reset. Especially the special teams ones where I sub almost everyone, because they keep puting starters there...

FYI - In the Nickel 3-3-5 SAM formation you can put your SS in at LB by using quick subs. I'm not sure about any others.

edit: Nickel Normal is another one.
