And...nothing was done about it. It said they had another space shuttle that could have been used as a rescue mission.

Long story short, they guessed wrong on the ground. Repeatedly. Subsequent investigation showed just how low crew safety was on the list of concerns at NASA at the time

Yup, being buried alive is one of my worst fears.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-65886245
Mourners at the funeral of an elderly Ecuadorian woman were startled to discover she was still alive.
Bella Montoya, 76, was declared dead last week following a suspected stroke.
Five hours into her wake on Friday, relatives preparing to change her clothes ahead of the burial found her gasping for air.
Ms Montoya is now back in hospital in intensive care, and Ecuador's health ministry has set up a committee to investigate the incident.

How do people make it to adulthood without learning how to eat quietly?
I can hear the guy eating at the table next to me. I'm wearing in ear noise canceling headphones. He's somehow crunching a chicken sandwich, smacking insanely, and slurping a drink.

Nope.
And if that starts to be the expectation, you'll end up with less people participating in these, which will overall hurt the people it is trying to help

I don't get how loose Adderall flows at college campuses like tic tacs. But when I need to get my son's refilled, I need a notarized letter from the head of the DEA, a prescription written in unicorn blood, and to submit to a retinal scan. So I can pick up 5 pills and then come back later in the week.
The system seems designed to punish people trying to do it right but isn't actually keeping it from being abused as a street drug.

Been there done that in the heavy painkiller days here.
My child, however, adds a wrinkle to answer some of your question.
Legit patient A has a 'script for 1 pill per day. BUT he really only takes 1/4th of a pill per day per discussion with his doctor. The 'script is never revised however ... so he refills once per month but only needs 1/4th of that, the other 3/4th ends up on the street.
Combine that with people knowing which pharmacy might not be so circumspect in their handling of refills and there's a fair supply for the street.

This. Our situation is slightly different. Our son needs his 1 pill a day to be fully functioning and focused for an average school day and a supplement for if he has after school activities etc. If he is not in school, not engaged in those extra curricular activities, or is just going to be vegging around us all day long, we don't give him any meds that day.

I don't usually slamdance on the rotting corpses of businesses,but.. REST IN PISS NUTSR.
(for those who are wondering what the hell I'm talking about, let me explain.. no wait, there's too much. Let me sum up, ala Inigo Montoya)
NuTSR are a bunch of grifters who thought the problem with D&D was that it was too woke and betraying it's white man power fantasy roots. They tried to impersonate TSR (the predecessor company to D&D Wizards of the Coast), claimed that WotC had left games fallow so they could squat on TSR 's trademarks, namely Star Frontiers, and sell their own version of the games, all towards getting rid of woke in RPG's.) They tried to crowdfund a lawsuit against TSR, and released a beta of their new Star Frontiers, which was SO horribly racist and sexist that even those who think Woke is a four letter word shifted uncomfortably in their seats and tried to edge away. Combined with their charming attitude towards all and sundry, they did the impossible. They made Wizards of the Coast the one that EVERYONE was rooting for!
the news filed yesterday where they announced they were filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and asked the judge to pause their own lawsuit as a result filled me with glee.

Not a big beer drinker but I've never had a Modelo. I'm going to try it just because ...
America’s top-selling beer is no longer American.
Modelo Especial, the Mexican lager brewed near Mexico City by Constellation Brands, became the top-selling beer in May, overthrowing Bud Light from the top spot it has held for more than two decades. The fall from the top further highlighted how much trouble the Anheuser-Busch brand is in following transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney’s Instagram post showing off a customized Bud Light can.
For four weeks ending on June 3, Modelo captured 8.4% of US retail beer sales, with Bud Light falling to second place with 7.3%, according to NIQ data given to consulting firm Bump Williams. Dollar sales were equally grim for Bud Light during that period, with sales falling 24.4%, while Modelo’s grew 12.2%.

Ted Cruz apparently thinks Pat Benatar is satanic. I just.. I don't.. What????
(for context, Ted Cruz said that he didn't think Senate Dems would impeach biden even if there was video of Biden murdering children dressed as the devil under a full moon while singing Pat Benatar)
I just.. Just.... You know what? I've got nothing to say. Politics wise or music wise. Just incoherent sounds of WTFery and OMGUDUMDUM and other, less acronymable (and more profane) phrases.

My take on this is he went down this stream of consciousness rant/ramble about eating children and the devil and the first thing that popped into his head was "Hell is for Children" so he just name-checked Pat Benatar off the cuff.
SirFozzie
06-16-2023, 11:28 AM
Actually, I have one follow up to the statement I would like Ted Cruz to clear up.
You say "if you had video of Joe Biden murdering children dressed as the devil under a full moon while singing Pat Benatar"
Now, is this video of Joe Biden (dressed as the devil) murdering children? Or is this Joe Biden murdering children (who are all dressed as the devil).
I'm sure you understand that this is an important bit of clarification that would almost certainly impact how I would view a vote on impeachment under the varying circumstances.

My luck (or lack thereof) with dining is the stuff of legend but the new twist is "okay to good experience once or twice ... followed by clusterfuckery"

Those dried up during the pandemic, hardly any returned to the workforce that I can tell. (ditto with HS kids but even moreso)
I get where you're coming from but if that were it in these cases then it would have been happening for the whole 15 years we've been here. Yes, there's always been a dropoff here in summer but it generally only hit the bottom rung severely (as remaining employees all shifted up a tier to fill gaps)
Plus this stretch of sudden implosions started before the semester ended, it's just continuing

I think Reddit is starting to charge to use their API, so a lot of 3rd party programs won't work anymore.
That's what people are upset about and I know there are some planned one day boycotts today with some subreddits shutting down entirely for the day.
More than 1 day. It's like a rolling protest where some subs have gone private to protest.
I can see a 1-2 day protest but this is getting annoying.
EDIT: article came out Fri but just read it today
https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/16/tech/reddit-blackout-fight/index.html
But Reddit isn’t only pushing back rhetorically. The company also appears to be laying the groundwork for ejecting forum moderators committed to continuing the protests, a move that could force open some communities that currently remain closed to the public. In response, some moderators have vowed to put pressure on Reddit’s advertisers and investors.
The escalations highlight the rift that’s emerged between the two most powerful groups on Reddit: The platform’s corporate managers and its unpaid volunteer moderators who manage conversations in individual subreddits. And it pits Reddit’s corporate interests, particularly ahead of a rumored initial public offering, against users and outside developers who have long argued they create value for the platform’s owners.
Now, the fate of the protests may hinge on public perceptions of which group better represents the views and interests of Reddit’s overall userbase, while Reddit increasingly moves to isolate moderators it views as out of line and as it seeks to drive a wedge between average users and moderators.

I've mentioned my nephew that works in sports radio on here before. Wednesday he was walking his dog when the dog got excited and pulled him down. He broke his right arm in four different places. The hospital said he need surgery immediately and started prepping him. Then they had him wait because they didn't have a surgeon. He waited from Wednesday till this morning in the hospital room not allowed to have any food for his surgery to be rescheduled over and over again. When they finally did the surgery, that one hour surgery became four hours. It was much worse than even the x-rays showed.
Needless to say his dad is major pissed at the hospital.

Friends from home are surprised how few Trumpers there are in my little corner of Idaho. I was kind of disappointed when a Trump flag went up across the street. Only one in the neighborhood. It's been there for a few months. Today I drove by and looked at it and it actually said, "Taylor Swift for President".
I returned a product to a store for the first time in my life because of poor quality. Admittedly it was only a store-brand maple syrup but it was unbelievably horrible. They must have changed the recipe/formula because it left me with a terrible aftertaste which lingered in my memory for days. I had to check that it wasn't some attempt at a diet version with 1970s-style artificial sweeteners but nothing looked out of place.

seriously you need to be returning things to places ALL THE TIME because so many things lack quality these days. And they don't give you crap about it as long as you have a receipt. usually they just give you a card with the amount so you can buy something else. Costco and walmart are both definite places that don't give yopu any crap about it.
as for syrup I have given up on the notion that ANY syrup other than sugar filled goodness like Mrs butterworth/log cabin is terrible. So bring me that sugary goodness
screw that "authentic maple sap right out of the tree"
Yeah, the store asked me if I had a receipt. Who actually keeps grocery receipts?
Yeah, I prefer the sugary syrup. I buy the "maple-flavored" syrup. It is more like an old-style (Australian) treacle or golden syrup - I don't know what the American equivalent is.
I'm not big on returning stuff. On the same day, I bought a replacement toaster since my last el cheapo one shorted out every time I turned it on. I bought another one for AU$7.50 (US$5). I once bought a more expensive toaster but it lasted as long as the no name brands that I have bought since.

1. Kudos to the headline writer.
2. Who advised this guy to speak to the press?
Steve Lemke defended his actions and said the relationship was consensual but might have been “amplified to the magnitude that it is now because of the national championship caliber that we’ve developed. I think it’s more of an ethics thing when it comes to the college as far as a coach/teacher being with a student-athlete.”
“I knew it was kind of a no-no, but there’s not a rule saying it can’t happen,” Steve Lemke said. “There’s not a law saying I’m going to go to jail for doing something like this. There’s nothing in stone. I guess it’s just an ethics code, like we frown upon it, but there’s no rule, there’s no law broken.”
Uh yeah Steve that whole coach/teacher being with a student/athlete thing is the reason. I am pretty sure they mentioned that during orientation.
The affair with the bowler was discovered when Amber Lemke saw a text message from her on Steve Lemke’s phone, he said.
“It didn’t have anything in detail,” Steve Lemke said of the text. “It was just about how amazing I am, basically, in general perspective. Amber saw that and questioned me, and I got to the point where it just built up so much that I basically told her the truth after she dug through my phone.”
So it was his wife/the head coach's fault for digging through the phone?
“I was the stay-at-home dad for five years with the kids while Amber got to go off and coach the team, and when she’d get back, I’d run practices on top of taking care of the kids while she was back,” Steve Lemke said. “When they’d travel again, I would sit back and take care of the kids. Then when I got hired on, she almost forced me to run practices. I was a volunteer the entire time before that trying to help out Amber. Once I got hired on, one thing stemmed from another. I felt like I was doing too much for what I was being valued at.”
I might have to tune in for the divorce proceedings. This dude is about to be an MRA icon.

I've given up doing my own pre-emergent and weed stuff. Got Turf Masters last year and can honestly say my Bermuda lawn is looking much better this year.
Clovers gone. Rye grass gone. Nutsedge gone.
Crab grass, still around. But know that they'll come back for a special treatment if I call (they did last year).
I don't care what reviews say about stuff you can get from HD & Lowes, they lie. The DIY stuff you sprinkle around doesn't work (and yes, I've followed the annual treatment calendar). The weed sprays work okay but after 3-4 weeks, the weeds are back. The pros just have the more potent stuff.

We've used TrueGreen for several years. What really turned the corner for our lawn was doing the fall aeration/overseeding several years in a row. It literally choked out most of the weeds and made the lawn really thick. But it's expensive - like $300-400.

My front lawn is a disgrace, patchy and what is there is mainly weeds. Decided that this year was the year I'd do something about it, bought a bag of Scott's Weed and Feed. Plan was spread that in April to do the weeding business, then in the fall reseed and it would all be better for next year.
Now we're in late June and the bag of Weed and Feed is still unopened in the garage.

Our front yard is at least presentable, but our back yard was a DISASTER AREA. Blank patches from tree shade and the now-removed trampoline which had been overrun by some rapidly-spreading chain weed along with all sorts of other crap. Mostly weeded and beat back with a weedwhacker (last year yet another mower decided to not start, got fed up and bought a push reel mower, which unfortunately can't cut anything over 4-5" as it just combs it down). Put some new soil down in a low area which had basically become a frog swamp, and over the dirt patch/litter box trampoline area. I'VE ACTUALLY BEEN ABLE TO GROW NEW GRASS! And that's just from some cheap seed picked up at Ollie's. There are still patches to be worked on, but this is very exciting for me, as usually everything we plant dies.

Watching the USFL semifinal end-game here... it's being played about 10 minutes from here. I had no idea it was such a bad product. Decent major-college level talent, penalty flags on almost every play, and much more could be called.
No imagination or variety in play-calling. No defense aside from clutching and grabbing. They structured with two four-team divisions, and this semifinal is between two of the three teams that finished 4-6 in one division.
I guess television can support it. It outdraws most sports on television - kinda like mid-major college football in terms of ratings, except on networks rather than cable.
The final is out here as well. Can't see going, even if the tickets were free.

I haven't been to a USFL game in person since the '80s. Just caught the end of last night's since it was on network television and I was curious.
Apparently, two USFL teams (Pittsburgh and New Jersey) use Canton as a home stadium, and it seats only 23,000. There are plenty of good seats available for the championship game. It's a nice little stadium - my wife's university uses it for graduation ceremonies.
But I doubt the league would exist if not for the television deal. Even the overtime seems more television than football (they go immediately to alternating two-point conversions, minimum of two).
On one hand, networks are desperate for live sports content people will watch, and football is America's top sport by an extraordinary margin now. On the other hand, it's impossible to follow these teams. They're not really local to anywhere and any breakout player will be in an NFL training camp next month. One of the starting quarterbacks yesterday (a name I recognize as a fourth-stringer recently in the NFL) joined the team right before the end of the season. So the players are decent, but everything else that makes the NFL a professional product is only half-there. I don't see this as a long-term league or something people will really care about.
I generally keep a sharp eye on my insurance explanation of benefits vs healthcare provider bills. Its amazing that I see lots of errors, but none of them ever seem to be in my favor.

Kids these day have it easy when it comes to getting.. ahem.. adult content.
When we were young, it took 6 minutes to download a picture of the Budweiser swimsuit girl, and you didn't know what to guard first, the monitor to prevent your parents from seeing it come in line by line, or the phone line because someone was going to pick it up and knock you offline.
Now adays, you enter any term (and a lot of them don't have to be explicit ones), and you get 250 pages worth of videos, VR, etcetera.

Archaeologists in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii have uncovered a painting which depicts what might be the precursor to the Italian pizza.
The flatbread depicted in the 2,000-year-old fresco "may be a distant ancestor of the modern dish", Italy's culture ministry said.
But it lacks the classic ingredients to technically be considered a pizza.
The fresco was found in the hall of a house next to a bakery during recent digs at the site in southern Italy.

And now, in stories that involve breaking the law WITHOUT people getting shot..
(Short version: Guy hires people to trespass into remote area owned by neighbor to cut down trees because he wants a better view of NYC (theory is "Eh, the fine is $1,000 per tree, and my house value will go up by more then 32,000, so, just cut down 32 trees, and voila!). Except the the fine applies to him, the contractor, AND the sub contractor (Up to $96K)... and there's the the catch. As part of it, you have to pay for the tree removal AND planting of trees of the SAME SIZE.. Between building a road, removing the trees they cut down, putting new trees of the same size in and taking care of them for a couple years, (oh, and the fines for doing all this), the would be NYC-View owner is now looking at $2 MILLION. Actually, now that I think about it, the guy probably wishes they had shot him.

The speed bumps in some areas around here have gaps in them. You can drive through a gap with one wheel but hit the bump with the other. I finally realized that they are spaced wide enough for buses to drive through the gaps without going over a bump.

Convection ven bacon is super easy and tastes the best, but after about 10 minutes you do have to baby it to get desired crispness. My family prefers it burnt while I prefer it where it basically melts in your mouth. Normally I'll settle on mine where it has some pull and snap to it.
Kinda the same with scrambled eggs. I prefer mine a little runny while theirs needs to be super hard scrambled.

Mom is now doing her best but has leaned on me. The most recent is I am now the second person, after her, they call on if an alarm goes off.
I don't want to be a dick, but part of me thinks if I potentially am getting a call at 3AM I should be compensated. I of course want to help my mom, and unless she sells I will take over the business someday. I dunno. I'm not going to say anything, just thinking.

Bacon on the smoker or on the grill, most of the time. It is a trick to get it crispy, but the grease dripping on some burgers as they cook, so good.

Agreed. Lose some profit, gain some piece of mind. I deal with rental properties all day long and there is no amount of money that would make that worth it for me. (Well, there is an amount but not what I would realistically get)

We don't really "do" rest stops. There's only 10 locations (not counting 'doubles' that have the same location with one on either side of the highway) statewide across 4 major interstates (I-85 has none in Georgia since 2010).
They've been pared down since their original purpose has been all but obsoleted as a GDOT spokesperson explained in 20009 "The rest areas were built in the early 1960s when those areas were so rural you couldn't get off an exit and find a gas station or a restaurant or a place to get a snack," she said. "Now, when you get off on just about any exit on the interstate you find a multitude of places where you can get gas, there are fast food places, just a multitude of places to meet your needs."

The funny thing is the next state up (well, one of them) is famous for its rest stops. Why? Because they are the only places you can buy hard liquor in the state.
New Hampshire allows grocery stores to sell beer and wine, but there are no privately owned liquor stores, so if you want a bourbon, brand, vodka or other alcoholic drink, you have to buy it from the state run liquor stores (which are all over the place, usually at rest stops).
The other thing that makes it so popular is that New Hampshire has no tax on alcohol, so the most popular rest stop stores are the ones right on the New Hampshire border with other states, so you have a lot of folks traveling to New Hampshire to get the booze cheaper then they would be in their own state, even with the travel expense.

Colon Cancer Screening Methods. A colonoscopy is not your only option for screening for colon cancer. Other screening methods are sigmoidoscopy, virtual colonoscopy, a fecal immunochemical test, a fecal occult blood test, or a stool DNA test.

Rest stops also keep OTR trucking off of local streets that are not generally engineered to handle those kind of weights, that often.

The rest of that story: Those test often have false positives that still will require you to have a colonoscopy, but that colonoscopy will no longer be fully covered by your insurance. You only get one free test. That is why I'm going this route.

Depends on the crime but I'm guessing a guy that murdered 50 innocent people wouldn't have fun in jail.
I always figured that criminals consider crimes against other criminals and grown men fair game, but self-police pretty hard crimes against the innocent and defenseless. I'm not a career criminal though, so I could be off base here.

I don't remember hearing about this story at all back in December, but in March he cut off his ankle monitor and has been on the run. He was caught over the weekend in California. Apparently he liked masks more than we all thought?
The other is Miami Hurricanes superfan "Cutler Ridge Laz" who was well-known locally on call-in shows and on Twitter stabbed his neighbor to death last year over an argument about stray animals and took a plea deal for a 15 year sentence.

Not yet, but it wouldn't surprise me. My great-grandfather was shot by the Dekalb county sheriff looking for my outlaw great uncle. They believe my great uncle ran to Texas were who knows what happened. The closest we ever got was a woman that called my grandmother from Mississippi claiming to be his daughter.

That's pretty rad.
I ended up finding out some info about the uncles in my situation. My uncles were put in prison in the 80s for murder. Officials in OKC at the time were absolutely confident my uncles were also responsible for a murder there. A number of similarities and they could put them in the surrounding area during that time. Everyone thought they did it, but they claimed they were innocent. Never confessed. Never tried or convicted for it.
Turns out they got DNA tested through some evidence and were cleared...mind you some 10-15 years later.
Good news for the family, though. Ten years later, the man responsible was arrested on an unrelated charge. His DNA was collected and he popped for this cold case.
I didn't know they had finally found the actual killer until I paused that show and went looking on the internet, though.

I didn't know it.
Another (though less impact) rule I hadn't heard about was this change
To insert strength of victory as the second tiebreaker for awarding contracts, proposed by the Competition Committee
Rule change: This will allow teams for strength of victory to be the second tiebreaker for postseason seeding after the head-to-head tiebreaker. The second tiebreaker was previously conference record.

The FOFC Top 20!
Yes some people talk a lot :)
Some of that is with the help of PETs (Performance Enhancing Threads).
Of the top twenty O/T threads sorted by replies, nine titles have to do with the last three presidents and/or their opposition.
Surprise threads on that list. The 2010 MLB season thread and the The West (a western themed browser based RPG) thread.
Shout out to the folks in IHOF and to Brian for the Legends of Sri Lanka threads in the Dynasty reports. That is some long term storytelling in those threads.

I hate interviewing other people for work even more than I hate being interviewed.

What would you do if a neighborhood relator you have no connection to was flying a drone low above your backyard while your girlfriend was outside, and when she confronted her said, "relax, we're not the government."
I should at least invest in a bucket of rocks, right?
I know the homeowner doesn't own the airspace above the home, but, I believe once it goes below a certain level and starts taking photos and being a general nuisance, that crosses a legal line. But I've never really thought about it or lived in a place any drone owner had such interest in.

Is the job an at home position that requires little to no actual ability to do anything? Then I am your man.

I can't believe I am 4th on the poster list, considering I was suspended in 2012 and went away for 5 years. I don't know whether to be embarrassed I have posted so much, or upset I gave away around 4.5 years of posting.

As far as ribs go, I could never do them right until I got a Traeger. Now I can do them 2 ways - soft and fall off the ball, or hard bark and bite off.

Posting 3 thoughts in 3 separate posts is also a good way to boost your post total.

Dynasty people get a reasonable post count boost. I'm not even that prolific and it looks like 1,000 posts in my own dynasty threads alone

I don't think I posted much there. Maybe a thread about Caitlin's softball as she started out, I think? Most of it was here.
I remember using "The Sideline" for posting about FOF before things moved over to FOFC. I think that was in 1999.
We need something like a FOFC timeline. I can't remember the exact time for things like Dan Dial (or was it Dave Dial?), jbmagic, HornsManiac, beer tents. Wasn't there a "quote of the day" widget at one time?

There was a quote of the day.
I have never done a dynasty thread and am 3rd on the list despite stepping away for 3 years thanks to some of the dude bros.
Werewolf padded a lot of my post count, and if I recall there was quite the hullaballo about werewolf posts counting.
