Funny you should mention it....

On other news, I'mve been working in my industry for about 7 years now and have been directly involved on 5 GEO missions (and played a supporting role on about 15 others). In this time, I have never run into what we've run into now...a day before we were going to ship the satellite for launch, we ran into a potentially mission-ending problem. It's good we found it before launch, but the level of insanity we're dealing with right is so far out of anything I ever expected to deal with. Timing is funny. If it happened after launch, we'd be similarly crazy but running down another path. Insane.

For the past couple years I have been working on re-recording my 12" record collection to my computer, since I got a cartridge that sounds very, very nice.

I went to edit a record and noticed that it was an instrumental. No instrumental exists. When I recorded it, the vocals were there & it sounded fine. A little experimentation found that Adobe Audition's input was set to mono.

So every record I have recorded over the past couple years is in mono. Fuck.

It always frustrates me when I'm using another web browser, typically at work, and I have to search something on the web. I feel like with adblock, noscript, and choosing which cookies to accept, I'm relatively safe on my own computer. But running around on IE and going a random search to try to find an answer seems like you're just asking for a virus

But then yesterday it just stopped and everything is working fine.

This all goes back to college when Netscape and autocomplete were new things. One day I come back from class and am hanging out with a friend in my dorm room and he wants to search for something online. So he starts typing and some porn sounding site autocompletes. I say something like "WTF. That's not me".

So, we go look in my history and find that as soon as I went to class in the morning, my roommate was surfing porn on my computer. I didn't mind letting him borrow my computer to check online every once in a while but he had his own and I had a chat with him when he got back. He was surprised that I had found out and it was understood from that point on that searches like that were not for my computer. I never had an issue again so either he used his own computer or learned to delete cookies and history.

Also, from that incident, I learned the importance of having a login and password on one's home computer.

Yesterday, we shared the plan with our team members in Human Resources; HR Operations; Learning, Development & Inclusion (LD&I); and Talent Management and Movement (TAM). We notified team members affected by the new structure transition that their current positions would be eliminated, effective August 2, at the same time advising them of new opportunities that will be available in the realigned structure. We will be posting the newly defined positions within the next two weeks so that the HR, HR Ops, LD&I, and TAM team members can apply for the positions that are of interest to them. All of this internal movement will be managed with dedicated resources to complete the transition as quickly as possible, with minimal disruption to the team members and the needs of our business partners.

The realigned structure geographically positions the HR Team for enhanced responsiveness, leveraging their collective experience and talents. However, some members of the current team are affected as 25 positions will no longer exist in the new structure. This is always a challenging component of change and on behalf of the entire team, I want to thank everyone for their professionalism and continued commitment as we transition the HR organization. I know I can rely on all of you to support our colleagues and join me in wishing them continued success as they pursue the next chapter of their professional careers.


So they posted the Manager positions in my department on Monday and the Trainer positions today. Basically my geographical group is the only one that is being affected of the technical training team. They are moving the Training Manager up to where I am, so the Manager in San Diego will have to reapply (I'm assuming my supervisor will as well). Then the 3 of us trainers (2 Anaheim and 1 Inland Empire) have to reapply for 3 positions each in a different office (1 Anaheim, 1 Garden Grove, and 1 Inland Empire). But at the same time we have to expect that our supervisor (who used to be a technical trainer) will probably also apply for the technical trainer position. In addition there is a Business Services Technical Trainer position (which is a department I was once part of) that is new.

Basically it's not as stressful as it was, since there are positions and it's all internal changes, no external candidates at this time. I've applied for the 3 positions in different locations, the Manager position, and the Business Services position (although I really don't want a job that requires 60% travel...)

Yes, traveling 60% of the time is no good in my opinion. Especially this day and age with video conferencing and stuff. Unless a person absolutely has to be there because no other person can perform that job, there's really not much of a reason to travel anymore.

I agree up to a point, but when you are dealing with physical items that are being trained there is a need for travel. And on the technical side 80% tends to be physical.

I have an HP LaserJet 1020. The cartridges are expensive (they're the big kind) and it just prints black and white (which is all I need), but the cartridges last a long time. And I print a lot.

I don't know how long I've had it. Maybe 6-7 years. I've never had an issue with it. I had a few crappy inkjet printers before this one. I'm never going back to them. The LaserJet is worth the money IMO.

I don't really need color, so I went with a laser printer. I caught this Brother printer when it was on sale for sub-$100 and honestly it has been fantastic. Maybe there is a nightmare ahead, but so far so good.

When I was shopping the color laser printers were way too expensive, though, so no idea if that is still the same.

Small, consumer models- yeah, I think 2 years is probably what you'll get out of them, on average. My little cheapy (~$150 for a printer/scanner/fax) HP c7200 has lasted about 5 years but I realize I've been pretty lucky on that front.

As Jon said, those front sensors are really touchy. And god forbid you put the wrong kind of paper in there or jerk the paper around (never do the "oh crap, I printed the wrong thing!" and try to pull the paper out after the pickup assembly has already grabbed the sheet- you're killing your printer doing that).

But, think about it- people keep wanting smaller footprint printers that are cheaper and go faster. Something has to give and it's the quality side of things. If it's priced too high, people won't buy. If it's too slow, people won't buy because at the store, there's a printer right next to it that lies about how fast it goes (gotta love the "it said 40 pages per minute so why do I only get 1 page every 2 minutes" phenomenon). And if it's too big, people won't buy it because they don't have a space for it. I think that's a really underrated driver of problems: making the mechanics of the printer smaller and more fragile is a big deal. But long term quality, you can't measure while standing there at the store so I suspect that's where sacrifices are made.

In KC, I worked on a lot of Laserjet 4200/4250/4300 printers with over 1 million pages on them. Those are the black and white HPs that you see practically everywhere if you look around in stores, banks, government offices, etc. They originally cost something like $1200, they're black and white, and are large by anyone's little home office standard. But they're built like a tank and can even withstand a few run of the mill a-hole office users who like to slam the tray and every once in a while, stick card stock in it and not set it to card stock (that just ruins printer pickup assemblies).

So, it's all a matter of what you're willing to pay. You want to pay for quality, you get quality. But if you want something with that many mechanics and electronics squeezed into too small of a package to work for $50, that's just unrealistic.

I have never had a printer last less than several years. We just replaced a Canon Pixma photo inkjet with a new Canon Pixma multi-function, simply because we needed the copy/scan function at home. The old printer still works, we just needed the extra functionality. It gets moderate use, printing various forms for us, pictures, and projects the kids create.

FWIW, I believe this is BS. Most name companies that make printers (HP, Canon, Epson) make their money off the print cartridges, not the printers. In fact if you look for deals for a while it was better to buy a new printer than replacement cartridges, because the printer would sell for less than a new set. These days they either charge above ink cost for the printer, or put smaller tanks in with the printer so that they are worth less.

So making a printer that dies fast would be a losing proposition.

I've wondered this myself at various times. Sometimes it can be very good but I think it might just dry out quickly which makes it unappetizing.

But to answer your question, I think it may be something very simple: color. Green is a color we like to introduce into items to make it look fresh.

The answer of course is to get those seedless watermelon geniuses to take the next step and make entire watermelons that are green.

An amazing man, 30 yrs on the job here, 50 yrs total in education. One of the most truly unique personalities I've ever met ... and I mean that in a good way. He's well & truly earned his retirement & I wish him nothing but the absolute best in the future.

As I said on FB earlier, even on the odd occasion when I believe he's dead wrong about something I trust that his intentions are indeed good, and that's not praise I give often or lightly.

On a more practical level, we now get to spend most of a year worrying about the future direction of the school.

I got a nice $5,000 loan grant for working in public service. Or at least, I thought I did. The federal government sent the money to the state distributor of that grant program in January, and then the state distributor sent it back to the federal government direct student loan servicing center. And that was about 5 months ago. The state distributor sent one big $24,000 check that was meant to be split between 4 other grant winners. My hunch is that that was too complicated for direct loan servicing to figure out and they just gave all $24,000 to one of the grant winners (the state distributor says the check was definitely cashed, a few months ago) The lady on the phone at direct loans just now thought the same thing. She said I should try to get the hypothetical person who may have gotten my money by mistake to call in and help straighten it out (whoever that is)

The state distributor is responsive to my emails but doesn't seem to be doing anything to figure this out. Apparently, direct loan servicing can track checks, but not unless they have about 12 pieces of info about it (name, date it cleared, routing number, etc.)......I've never seen the check of course, so I have to rely on the state distributor to provide that information.

And today, with no notice, direct loan transferred my loan to some weird other loan service, apparently this is part of new student loan legislation. What are the odds direct loan servicing finds my check and actually gets it to whatever "Aspire Resources" is in the next 20 years?

Also, to accept this check, I signed an agreement to work in public service for 3 more years. I wonder if it's still binding. I want to take a job in the private sector now out of spite and just to see if they try to enforce it.

And pretty soon the grant program is going to start taking applications for next year's awards. I'm supposed to get "priority consideration" for another (hypothetical) $5k. Maybe when I'm 70 they'll figure it out and give me a huge check with interest.

Edit: Also, I had to fill out an I.R.S. form because I have to pay taxes on the $5,000. I have no doubt they're going to think I owe that, even if I never get the money I might be worth just paying it then fighting with the I.R.S. It'd be fascinating if I ended up losing money to the government because I work in public service.

Ya, I'm trying to decide what kind of ruckus I should make. The state distributor that handles these applications and this grant is a state university. And it's a small state, and a even smaller legal community (it's a grant for public service lawyers), so I feel like the right letters or phone calls could help something good happen, even if it's just a double award next year at some other punk's expense.

Of course, if there's some other lawyer out there sitting happy with a $24k treasure trove, you'd have to think they'll figure that out eventually. I mean, they know who got awards. I just don't know that anyone is going to follow up on it and figure anything out, I've gotten nowhere in 4 months.

So a little over three weeks ago, we had twin boys. It's a handful, and we've had a lot of help from both our mothers, but little things they do drive us crazy. I'm sure I'll come up with other examples when it's not 1:30 in the morning, but the one I'm thinking of now is that, sometimes, they'll take their dishes, and instead of putting them in the half-full dishwasher, they'll wash it, and put it on the drying rack. I don't understand the motivation. It's a waste of their time hand-washing this stuff, when we have a machine that does it for us, it means that it's longer until the dishwasher is full and we can run it, and it takes up space on the drying rack that we need for bottles. I guess they're trying to help, but it just doesn't make any sense to me.

When I was a boy I used to want to be part of the GI Joe team, even if it was fictional. When the cartoon series from the 80s became available on Netflix via streaming I smiled. I couldn't wait to watch them again.

During one episode the GI Joe team assaults the Cobra base in the desert. Tanks, jets, helicopters, motorcycles. GI Joe spared no expense to take care of Cobra once and for all.

They even brought in the hang gliders.

Podiatrist visit today to see how bad my turf toe damage is.

Thought I broke the toe running stairs 8 weeks ago. X-ray 2 weeks ago didn't show a break but the top and side of the toe hurt like crazy and have since I originally hurt it.

I have turf toe in my thumb. True story. Turf toe is basically (as far as I can tell) and inflammation of the sesamoid bone(s) in the toe. You have them in your thumb, too. And mine are causing so many problems my hand doc recommended removing them.

Anybody who is bored enough to follow me on Twitter/FB knows that I just got back from 2 weeks in French Guiana today. How the heck is it that on my 2 days of travel I seem to have gotten more mosquito bites (or at least, my bites are itching a TON more) than in the 2 weeks I was down there?

Also, I missed eating fruits and vegetables while I was down there.

And after seeing a cockroach in my room on the 2nd night in our "new" hotel (we spent the first few days--almost a week?) in a different hotel, I slept with the lights on under the assumption that the cockroach wouldn't want to come into the well-lit area. Didn't see any other cockroaches in my room. Ignorance is bliss. :D

The Peugeot 206+ I was driving down there was a cute little car but amazingly under-powered and had a horrible turning radius for such a small car. My Mazda 3 has a tighter turning radius.

I finished putting drywall up on my garage ceiling today. Holy crap... even when cut into 3 ft X 4 ft they are heavy as hell when holding above your head on a ladder (with one hand while the other grabs the nail gun.)

Since buying this condo I have put in a completely new PEX plumbing system, put down new mortar subfloors, tiled the laundry room & main floor bath, laminate flooring in the kitchen, completely new cabinets in the kitchen, ran a gas line for the stove, formica countertops, and a bunch of other things (including a lot of wallboard)

And I did it all by myself.

The only thing I didn't do is the carpet.

One of my best (worst?) memories of the East coast blizzard in February 2010 was working from home the entire week. I'd wake up early, make some coffee, log in and start working. I convinced my wife it made no sense for me to shower, since later on, I'd be going out to shovel. Then after shoveling, I'd go back to work...this played out a few days in a row. I think I showered twice between Monday morning and Friday night that week.

I've been having headaches. One of the PAs at my primary's office sent me for an MRI, and then either she or the radiologist at the imaging center diagnosed me with a certain malformation of the brain.

Went to see a neurologist yesterday. Good news is that she says I was misdiagnosed, and am really just dealing with some pretty bad tension headaches. So now I feel like a freaking walking pharmacy with all the meds she has me taking (plus two to only take if I need them.. but thus I have to carry them since I never know when/if I'll need them). I get to go to physical therapy. And then the most fun.. get to have some injections into my neck and then have them poke needles in me to try to get things to loosen up. Can't wait! *shudder*

Well, to get technical, it's a bacteria that lives in anaerobic places (like underground). It creates a toxin that can make people sick--you've heard of lockjaw? That's the result of tetanus poisoning.

Normally it's not a worry. If it gets into an anaerobic place in your body, most likely deep inside a puncture wound, it can start growing there and make you sick.

It has nothing to do with rusty things, despite what most people think. But if something is unearthed from under ground, and is pointy (like an old rusty nail) that's a great delivery mechanism. It's not super common, but old farms are a likely place to find it I think because it is in transmitted in the animal feces? But so if you step on an old nail at an old farm site that was underground, that's when you need to worry about it. Also if you're in a trench in World War I.

Well that was some fever. Between 5:30 when I woke up first and 9:30 when I actually got up, I sweated through everything. Literally. My pajama-shorts felt like they had just come out of the wash. Soaked my sheets and everything. My hands were actually wrinkley (like when you were a kid and you were in the bath too long) from all the sweating.

Between yesterday when I was sick and this morning (just now) when I weighed myself, I lost 3lbs. That's a lot of sweat.

Back in 2005 I had to travel to Warsaw to give a presentation for our company's product at Microsoft's unveiling of Microsoft Operation Manager. It was two 2-hour presentations. For the first presentation, I had a translator, and it was like the UN. People that needed an English-Polish translation had headphones that piped in the translator. Crowd interaction was really good.

The next day, I didn't have a translator. As I was giving the presentation, the crowd sat there stone faced and silent. I figured no one was understanding a word I said. A little bit later, I kept tripping over pronouncing a word, I think it was 'virtualization'. I told the crowd "I apologize for speaking English like President Bush". The previously stone faced and silent crowd burst into laughter. I then realized that they understood English, but just had to concentrate to do the translating themselves.

Definitely still sick BTW. Went to work and lasted all of one hour before I realized the fever was coming back. Got up to pour out my cup of tea and head home and promptly fainted. Flat out.

Luckily my coworker was there to get me back into my seat at my desk, but then I proceeded to faint again WHILE HE WAS STANDING RIGHT THERE TALKING TO ME.

Crazy shit.

Went over to my parent's (lucky they live like a mile from my office) and slept all day so far. Guess I won't be going in to the office till Monday. Hopefully I can break this fever tomorrow and be better for the weeekend.

I have postural hypotension (light-headedness when I stand up) due to low blood pressure, so I attribute the fainting to that combined with the fever really coming back and hitting hard at that time.

Fever wasn't anything insane, only like 101.8. And blood pressure is right where it has been. If I don't feel a lot better by some point tomorrow (which would be day...3?) I'll prolly at least call the doc.

Speaking of fevers, we were worried that one of our babies (one month old today) had a fever, so we called our pediatrician. With our 2-year old, we'd managed to avoid having to take his temperature rectally, but our new pediatrician wanted us to. Surprisingly, he handled it really well (and didn't have a fever).

This afternoon I put a coat of paint on my garage floor. It's supposed to have a satin finish. Looks flat to me. It also didn't go on in one uniform color despite two gallons that are the same color being mixed together with a mixer on a drill for several minutes.

I knew I should have gone with a basic oil-base floor paint instead of the expensive soap & water clean up epoxy ($9 more per gallon)

I think these two go back to Lowes.
