So, it's bizarre, but they teach Mandarin as the second language at my son's elementary school.

Talking to a friend of mine who lives in Taiwan. The Mandarin word for "that one" is "nigga" (pronounced like you'd think). He was telling me the rather uncomfortable feeling whenever he's trying to point and ask for things.

Which led to me wondering exactly how they're gonna teach that one in school over here.

That info is public record in most (all?) states.

In Georgia - with semi-open primaries - it's also a strong indicator of your party affiliation (though not absolute, as most rural voters will understand immediately).

Every candidate worth their salt has used that information for years to target their campaign efforts. In some respects, it's actually kind of comforting to see (theoretically) private citizens -- or at least non-candidates -- making use of the same info.

Forgive me in advance. I am not much of a writer but I want to share a personal story.
Death of the local paper...


My kids go to high school in a small town. We live in a tiny town 15 miles away that doesnt have a school.

The town the school is in had a local newspaper from 1855-2006.
The next town over and our hated high school rival had a local newspaper from 1928-2006.
Of course at their peak both were dailies and down near the end each had swapped to 2x a week. Wednesday and Sunday.

Then from 2006-2015 the companies merged and published a single weekly edition.

Finally at the end of 2015 it was no longer sustainable and was shut down.

Not much would be missed, EXCEPT the local high school sports coverage.

Gene Graham had covered local high school sports for both papers (and submitted a weekly column to the next larger town newspaper and occasionally all the way up to The Charlotte Observer) It was a fixture around these parts, and if you were ever worth your salt at playing sports in highschool you had been written about by Mr. Graham. He did a phenomenal job of covering every sport. Football, Basketball, Cross Country, Wrestling, baseball, Golf you name it. If high schoolers competed against other high schoolers he covered it. He played on his name to write the Graham Cracker Crumbles column...and man he made you feel like the Super Bowl Champs the way he told a story about you. When my grandmother passed away this past May she still had a copy of a November 1995 edition hanging on the wall where I was the cover of the sports section. 'A Familiar Scene for the Hometown Cougars' read the Headline as I lined up for the last time my senior year after starting 4 years on our varsity squad. I mean in the course of life its such a non item, minutia. No one outside of my immediate family remember that. Heck id have long forgot it if not for grandmaa's constant remindner ...but 30 years later my grandmother, may God rest her Beautiful Soul, still had that paper thumb tacked up to her wall.

Anyway back at the end of 2015 when the paper shut down, Mr. Graham said it just wouldn't be right this generation of Cougars not having their on field exploits covered. So the then 73 year old decided he needed to learn something new. He needed to learn the internet. He taught himself how to build a website. A website he fully funds himself, and despite no pay for his passion...he still covers every sporting event.

He must have written 10,000 headlines in his career at this point. So last night I was a bit surprised when he walked up to me (our local high school played their 1st round playoff game last night) and said "I was formatting an article on your boy earlier and I had it laid out with the Headline 'A Familiar Scene for the Hometown Cougars' over a picture of Lane...but that just wasnt right. He is his own man and he deserves his own headline. Besides he's a better player than his dad ever dreamed of being"...with that he poked me in the ribs and waddled away. 2 cameras around his neck and the old school notepad and pen in hand. I was astonished he remembered that headline. Awestruck really. I didnt think much of it until my wife just texted me at lunch with a link to his newest posting....just the whole memory really got to me and I wanted to share with someone. Hope y'all dont mind indulging me.

Yeah that's kind of my life to be honest.
My wife wants no involvement in the finances. None.


To the point that a decade ago she actually gave me a power of attorney explicitly for the reason of her not having to go see the accountant and sign tax papers.


Car buying she tells me what she wants. I go find it, negotiate the deal have everything set up. I come back she drives it, nods and I signt he check and drive away.


I have the same amount of involvement in laundry and dishes. I open the closet/cabinet and clean stuff is there. When I'm done I toss them in the hopper/sink and they are-appear tomorrow.


Again I know that sounds barbaric or horrific to some, but it works for us and makes us both happy.

Well my wife hasn't worked outside the home in 17 years. We both grew up without traditional families and it was important to us that when we had kids she would be home to raise them.



Early on it was a tremendous strain when I was starting my first business and things were tight. In fact I actually took a second job (3rd shift) and slept 3 hours or less daily for 18 months. But I wouldnt trade it for anything.


When we started gaining traction she always got spoiled first.



She will quickly tell anyone, she doesnt care about the money and material things...she says "I didnt earn any of it, if we separate I dont deserve any of it" that's not to say she doesnt want and have nice stuff (her current 2nd car cost more than the house we lived in when she quit to raise Lane) but again it works for us.


Just as an example last night we had split parental duty. There was a school function for both kids and a mandatory Club Volleyball (for my daughter) parent meeting 35 miles away. I did school and she did volleyball. I was going to start supper when we got home before her but she threw a fit and said it was "her job" and insisted we wait.

My wife and I decided 2 1/2 years ago I would quit my job to stay home with our then 2 and 5 year old. Best decision we ever made, and our family could not be better off for it. We are fortunate she has a great job as a VP for a Warren Buffet company and it just made sense.

The one concession I told her we had to keep our cleaning person to come weekly because I am just not wired to clean bathrooms, mop floors, etc...

A couple years ago while we were on vacation our alarms kept going off. Our neighbors went above and beyond to try to fix it, pulling and replacing batteries, etc. They went off multiple random times, and a fire truck showed up at least twice. Finally, we just had them pull all the batteries, but what happened was a few of them would randomly chirp - even without the battery. So then we finally disconnected them from electricity and called someone to look at it. Turns out the detectors had gone bad. All 8 or 10 of them had to be replaced. Guy said they usually don't last beyond 10 years and you should replace them every.decade before they go haywire.

A friend of mine recently reconnected with a woman he used to go to school with (he's around 50ish). He traveled down to where she lived a couple of times, she did the same, etc etc.

She was up here this weekend, they went out, had a great time, went back to his place, started getting busy and in the middle of it she had a brain aneurysm. He called 911, they get her to the hospital but it is too late, he basically waited there alone until one of her relatives could get to town to sign off on unplugging life support.

Really tragic and a horrible thing to happen to everyone involved. I understand this wholeheartedly and feel awful for my friend and his friend.

BUT. A little part of me is like, wow, respect. I'm NOT SAYING he fucked her to death. But he kinda fucked her to death, right?

Anyway, the downside is that it's not all that visually obvious (in a mow-the-lawn way) when I have missed a part of my face. So, there are days when I get into the office, or to my first engagement, and realize that I have an odd half-inch vertical strip of stubble right around my chin, extending for two inches or so down my neck.

Thus, reaffirming my inevitable slide into becoming a doddering old fool.

It's true that there's nothing they can do, but its always worthwhile to report any crime so law enforcement agencies can have data about what's going on in their community. When scams like this spike, they can warn residents, be more aware themselves of how the scams work so they can advise people who call in, etc.

We got outgained 420-22, we did not manage a first down the entire game
(they started throwing the ball in the closing minutes up 41-0, we got an INT to set up our only score).

And you know what, I couldn't be any prouder of our guys.

Played as hard at the end as they did at the start. This was simply a physical mismatch of pretty epic proportions. Post-game comment from our junior QB were about "knowing how far we have to go to compete against those guys" and "starting to work now to get back here next year". That's a 17 year old who gets it, and there are never too many of those around.

This GMC car commercial drives me nuts for a number of reasons.

1) This guy just runs out and buys like $120,000 worth of vehicles. How insanely rich do you have to be to do that without running it by your spouse?

This is a helluva ridiculous hour to have to get up in order to go watch a HS football game in person.

The work to get back to the championship game began the day after the loss.

And back we went ... with a better but ultimately unhappy ending.

After getting demolished last year 41-3, we found ourselves with 10-0 halftime lead against the mighty ELCA. Opportunistic defense forced two turnovers that led to an early field goal, a 52 yard down the sideline out of the wildcat formation, and things certainly looked a lot better.

Aaaaaand then ELCA scored 20 points in the first 5:30 of the second half, we got back within 20-17 in the final minute of the third quarter ... but our own turnovers mounted & ELCA's skill positions took control resulting in a 44-17 final, giving them their fourth consecutive title (only the third team in state history to do that).

The goal for Acad was to work their butts off to close the gap that was clearly illustrated last year. That goal was achieved, the gap IS closer than it was. Unfortunately it's still sizable.

On the bright side we're still relatively young in a lot of spots. We'll have to replace a lot of linemen and some key defenders but the core should remain solid. RB/LB star is a junior, the QB is a sophomore, the DB/WR is a sophomore as well.

The down side? ELCA was probably down this year, with 13 new starters most of whom will be back. They're arguably younger than we are. 4 in a row and they may not be done yet.

Helluva group of kids -- the seniors are last ones that Will actually went to high school with at any point -- they did every single thing that was asked of them and then some. And the work to close that gap further begins tomorrow.

But yeah, when I was in my teens I could probably tell you the top 5 in batting average and home runs in both leagues at any given time. Now, unless it's fantasy related, there's less focus on getting data to viewers and more focus on a creating stories, creating debate, and quick highlights.

In the 90s Sportscenter highlights did a good job of telling the story of a particular game. Now you might see 2 to 3 plays at most if it's non-popular teams playing.

It'd just be Atlanta accomplishments, I believe. He wants to make it JUST about "on the field" but no one does a list like that is just on the field (how do you compare people from different sports for one). And even regarding on the field performance, Aaron had 10 less years, but his years were better on average (and he should have won the 1969 MVP).

I think that the reason for Aaron only have 9 years in Atlanta makes a big difference - the Braves moved here and Aaron laid the foundation for that club. That's why the street in front of Turner was named for him. And the 715 HR is the most famous Atlanta sports moment in history. That sort of stuff makes one an icon. Chipper had an amazing career, won an MVP (and interestingly, maybe shouldn't have won it) and a Championship (though he had better teams than Hank did).

Since this is the random thoughts thread, the Hank Aaron mention made me look at Eddie Matthews and Warren Spahn. Aaron/Matthews/Spahn is pretty much the Milwaukee trifecta for the older generation. Spahn played for the Boston Braves and Milwaukee Braves, but never in Atlanta. Aaron played for the Milwaukee and Atlanta iterations of the Braves and also played for the Brewers to end his career.

Eddie Matthews is an interesting one, as he played for the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves. Albeit, just one year in Boston and Atlanta respectively.

McDonalds trademarked "BigMac" as a name for products and locations. The important part is "AND LOCATIONS".

So then they stopped Irish chain "Supermacs" from expanding into Europe, because "people might get confused when a "Supermac"-restaurant opens up next to a "Big Mac"-restaurant"

Supermacs and later european courts said "Wait a minute...There are no restaurants called "Big Mac"! We are going to cancel your trademark, because not only did you lie about usage, you also friviously used this lie to damage the business of a competitor"

And now we are back to the original trademark, that talked about locations...AND PRODUCTS. Because products and locations were included under one trademark, they now have lost BOTH. Not only can everyone now open a restaurant called "Big Mac", they also can sell burgers called "Big Macs"
