She is a big cat..The window pane wasn't thin, what I think it was is the wood in the frame holding was bad, and the window fell out then hit and shattered.

We want to get some estimates to do an addition to the house. We have a 5x10 area that is a deck that is on the second floor. I've been in the house and we have never used it nor intend to use it so.. thought about just putting up 2 walls, running the roof down and making it a walk in closet. Explained it to the first contractor last week, he said it was something they could do and would come out Monday to get the specs to do an estimate.
I adjust my work schedule and he calls up this afternoon and tells me that he thought about it, it isn't something he wants to do and we would pay more than we want to so he isn't coming. First thought, go f yourself. Second thought, Probably one of those people that sits around and bitches about the economy and third thought - thanks, you saved me from making a mistake because you obviously are not someone I want to deal with.

Wait, seriously? Is this not something out of a porn movie?
Seriously, I'd love to see how that transpired exactly. How do you get from A to B? Is there a transition at all, or is it more like:
"Hey Sarah, you should really work on validating Nick's feelings - instead of responding defensively, start with 'I hear that you're feeling X'. Communication is key to a good marriage. Now why don't you bend over so I can fuck you up the ass, and oh, could you suck off Jimmy here so he's not left out. Thanks".

I really don't know much more about the situation than what I referenced earlier. The one dude I met maybe 6 or 7 times and the other dude I only met once, at my friends wedding. When my buddy got married he moved about 30-40 minutes away and just had a kid so I really didn't and don't see him that much I just know that they all lived pretty close to each other and were tight.
When the breakup first occured he called me and mentioned in passing that "even bob and mark went over to talk to try and talk to her last night". It wasn't till a good year or so later that he told about the sex and him being in the car but it didn't really shock me.

Sounds like 90% of the contractors I've dealt with since we moved here. Truly the worst work ethic/business sense of any profession I've ever seen in my life, very consistent with anyone is that field in this area. It's not unusual to have to make 3-4 calls before you can even find anyone to show up for a quote (although it's amusing when they call back like three weeks later to try to schedule a meeting).
My experience has been that it's limited to the immediate area though, 30 miles away & we can find people who actually, you know, want to work.
Ksyrup
09-21-2011, 08:38 AM
Big +1 on that. Same issues here.
I did find one guy who would keep appointments, did a good job, and stuck to his estimate. He got $25K+ of work from me. Everyone else... just awful. No calls when they can't show up, weeks waiting for an estimate when I could get someone out there, crappy work when they do finally show up, etc. It's hard to believe some of these people stay in business with the communication and general business skills they exhibit on a daily basis.

The genius of Joe Posnanski:
Time for a new JoeWord:
Blatt (v) The act of continuing to talk on the cell phone after the call has been dropped.
Example: "How long did I blatt before I finally realized that you were gone?"
Example: "I would have called you back like 10 minutes ago, but I kept on blatting."
Example: "I'll try to remember what I said, but I swear I'll never say it as well as when I was just blatting."
Why blatt? The "BL" comes from "blab." And the last three letters? Well, that should be obvious.

Its almost unfathomable to me how god damn stubborn (and kinda irresponsible!) my mother is. She had rotator cuff surgery Wednesday. Her right arm is in a sling, she has specific instructions to rest, stay in her recliner, and no matter what don't use her right arm or she might undo any positive effects the surgery could have if she strains her shoulder. She's got some morphine based thing she can take every 12 hours and percoset every 4 hours. My sister and I both live with mom and dad so we can help take care of dad, and are trying to take care of mom as well, but so far all that's entailed is just hanging around and every 10-15 minutes or so when she is awake getting really freaked out and saying "Would you let me do that!? Stop using your arm!"
I think the high point is when she (a notorious meddler) decided she needed to get up and come to the kitchen to oversee the process of re-heating a chicken marsala dish that a family friend brought by, just to make sure it was done right. Or maybe it was last night when my sister couldn't find the TV remote and mom got up and tried to MOVE THE BED to help look for it.
I just erased a lot more bitching, I feel better now though, except for the fact that no one in the house got more than 3 hours sleep because she is now fighting everyone because she wants to sleep in her bed instead of the recliner, which is 100% against doctors orders for countless reasons. The second my sister and I tried to get a bit of sleep she got up, went to bed, fell asleep, rolled over on her shoulder in her sleep, woke up in massive pain and got everyone up. After we got her up, situated with new pain meds, she went to the bathroom, came back into her bedroom and sat down on the bed, and got pissed at both of us when we asked her to get in the recliner instead. Holy shit its going to be an awesome weekend.

Thanks for the warm words, folks. My highest game keeps progressing by two pins. Three years ago, I bowled a 275. Earlier this year, I bowled a 277. Last night was the 279. I guess 281 is next, but I'm hoping 300 is next, of course.
Edit: And I just realized after typing that how difficult it is to score 281. That's a really strange number to get in a bowling score. That's like X X X X X X X X X51. That would be a superior choke job to start off with 10 strikes and then bowl a 5 count. I hope I never do that.

I was on Percocet when I broke my arm and it's really an amazing drug. When you're on it, you feel perfectly normal with no pain at all. You start to think, "This doesn't really hurt that bad", and you think it's time to stop taking it. Once the effect wears off though, you realize just how much pain it was masking.
I bet a lot of people really hurt themselves badly because the percocet makes them think they do more than they really can.

Obama tells blacks to 'stop complainin' and fight - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/obama-tells-blacks-stop-complainin-fight-015928905.html)
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a fiery summons to an important voting bloc, President Barack Obama told blacks on Saturday to quit crying and complaining and "put on your marching shoes" to follow him into battle for jobs and opportunity.
And though he didn't say it directly, for a second term, too.
Obama's speech to the annual awards dinner of the Congressional Black Caucus was his answer to increasingly vocal griping from black leaders that he's been giving away too much in talks with Republicans -- and not doing enough to fight black unemployment, which is nearly double the national average at 16.7 percent.
"It gets folks discouraged. I know. I listen to some of y'all," Obama told an audience of some 3,000 in a darkened Washington convention center.
But he said blacks need to have faith in the future -- and understand that the fight won't be won if they don't rally to his side.
Coincidence? Poor choice of language? Subtle sterotyping?

Our local store had 4 self-checkout lanes, and recently got rid of them in the last few months. Not sure what the rationale was.
Declining use (down to 16% from 22%), lower customer satisfaction and the upcoming cost associated with upgrading something that isn't really all that popular in the first place.

I started using some type of dandruff shampoo over the weekend, and it seems to have helped cut down on the number of small dandruff flakes I have. Unfortunately, it hasn't seemed to do much for the really large flakes. When I brush my hair, it looks like my head is raining grits. This would not be a good thing normally, but on me, it's actually pretty awesome.

Mexican Coke Retail Store Locator (http://wheretofindmexicancoke.com/)
There are two locations in Fairfax and two in Leesburg. It looks like Costco/Wegmans have both decided to carry it. I'll be checking both the Manassas and Woodbridge Costcos and the Wegmans in Woodbridge.
I'll have to look at the Wegmans in Dulles and the one in Lansdowne..

Ya know when you're watching a sporting event on tv and you leave the room to make a sandwich or something? Far enough way that you can't hear the tv at all. But for some reason your ears still think they hear random boos or cheers and get you all antsy to get back to the game.

Rush isn't a "songs" band. Plus, my understanding is this is more of a lengends/influences-type award. Rush has been incredibly influential in the rock world. And that's an understatement. I don't think this about how many #1s they had. Whether the RnR HoF voters like them or not shouldn't even matter.

Police: Couple who abducted 8 kids from foster care found - CNN.com (http://edition.cnn.com/2011/09/27/justice/new-york-abduction/index.html?hpt=hp_t2)
New York (CNN) -- A couple accused of kidnapping their eight children from foster care in New York last week have been apprehended.
Nadal, 28, fled with her seven sons and one daughter from a Queens facility after an authorized visit on September 19, police said.
The abducted boys are all named after their biological father, Nephra Payne, 34.
They are Nephra Payne, 11; Nephra Ceo Payne, 10; Nephra John Payne, 9; Nephra Shalee Payne, 6; Nephra Rahsul Payne, 6; Nephra Umeek Payne, 5; and Nephra Yahmen Payne, 4.
The lone girl was identified as Nefertiti Payne, 11 months.

Let me just say this - the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are up for induction the same year as Heart is ridiculous. And ABBA was inducted before Alice Cooper. And KISS, Judas Priest, Rush, and a bunch of other worthy bands still haven't been nominated. The HoF is not worth the time I've taken to even type this out.

From his list, I would definitely favor some of the older bands - Cheap Trick, Yes, Deep Purple, Priest, Maiden should all be in.
I think a lot of his issues are with the concept of "rock n roll" - the Hall has expanded that meaning to virtually any genre of music. So it seems like the issues are twofold - A, how can they get into the RnR HoF given the type of music they were known for? or B, how can they get in before a real rock band?
JediKooter

Yup, that's the problem. You have an entity called the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, yet, non rock & roll acts are in the hall before actual rock & roll acts are. They really just need to change the name to Music Hall of Fame.

Also, I bought a bottle of Mexican Coke (at least, I presume it was, as it was in the imports section of Wegmans and says Made in Mexico). I don't know that I tasted much difference from regular Coke, but I so rarely drink soda. there was a roach that would obscure the numbers on the clock. many times you looked at it & wondered what the hell that meant, then it would move & you'd realize it.
i got pissed off enough one day to figure out how to kill it.
i drilled a small hole where it liked to frequent, then when i saw it there I sprayed a little raid. it fell. the numbers were fine once again. i won!
a minute later, random parts of the numbers stopped lighting up. just like before. it would be out, then work when another part would stop. this time, there was no roach to see inside.

I take over-the-counter medication very rarely, but I took a dose of Alka-Seltzer Plus Nighttime last night. I am still feeling loopy 11 hours after taking it. I feel like I'm floating and can barely keep my eyes open. At least I'm able to walk in a straight line, unlike last night about 30 minutes after I took it. Fortunately, I didn't feel very strange driving to work this morning, so I made it here safely without any problems. I can't figure out whether it's trying to hype itself as a bad-ass futuristic boxing movie, or a warm-hearted father-and-son movie. I've seen trailers that lead heavily in each direction, and if the trailers themselves have me confused as to what sort of movie it is, the movie itself will probably be even more confused and meandering.

Damn, how do you sit for that long without your legs going numb?
There was a girl on our floor freshman year in college (eventually the GF of my roommate) who told us that that was when she knew she was done and it was time to get up - when her legs had fallen asleep.

The closest I ever got to kissing Stacey Dash was kissing a container of Mrs. Dash and calling it Stacey until it choked me.
That's pretty much how I imagine an encounter with Stacey Dash would end, so it was appropriate.

I mentioned in this thread once before that I am virtually incapable of talking to blondes. A blonde was just hired to be the lead on one of my work projects. I've technically worked with her before, but this is the first time that I'll have to actually work closely with her and communicate one-on-one. I'm scared. I'm not good with girls, especially blonde ones. :(
I attended a meeting this afternoon with her and about 20 other people. Right before the meeting started, I tried to ask this young woman how she was doing today, but it kinda just came out like "hurf flurf" and I embarrassed myself in front of everybody. I think my career just got rerouted into a ditch.

Funny work story (maybe I posted this in the Stalls thread?)
My supervisor at my first job out of school was a really cool guy. I was 22, he was about 26.
He comes in one Friday telling me how he was out drinking the night before, and how tired he is.
Fast forward til a little later in the morning, I don't see him for awhile. He was a smoker, I don't think much of it. Later in the day, he tells me follow him outside while he smokes, he has a funny story to tell me.
Turns out, he was in a stall, taking care of business. He had his elbows on his knees and propped his head up...and fell asleep. He's not exactly sure how long, probably about a half an hour. When he woke up, he freaked out, immediately tried to stand up...and couldn't feel his legs. So he crashes into the stall wall/door. Takes a couple minutes for the feeling to get back to his legs, pulls up his pants, and continues on with his day.
I had forgetted about that until this post.

Rounding. It is probably really 114 (rounding down to 110) calories in 8oz. Which would be 285 for 20oz, and rounding that up would make it 290.

I find it fascinating that cassette tape sales are actually rising. Vinyl I understand - the sound quality makes it a must-buy for audiophiles. But tapes? And then I read an article in the USA Today about some indie label that puts out new releases on vinyl and cassette, and I realized it's a hipster thing. Because who the hell would want a cassette tape?! The hissing and the portability issues and the tape and the pain in the ass of skipping tracks, etc. Makes no sense - unless you like being counter-culture, retro, and ironic, I suppose. I wonder if that indie label gives away free Angry Elmo shirts with every cassette, too.

Here's the article:
Cassette tapes see new life after MP3s – USATODAY.com (http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/story/2011-10-02/mp3s-cassette-tapes-vinyl-albums/50639144/1?AID=4992781&PID=4169806&SID=7cvehehp7yik)
I still don't get this. The reasons they give for gravitating toward tapes are the same as CDs, right? A physical product. It's not like tapes are the portability equivalent of vinyl, in terms of sound. It's like having a limited edition version of the album, makes you feel connected to the recording? Sheesh. People will buy anything if it's marketed, I guess.
Daniel Gallen, a University of Maryland (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Organizations/Schools/University+of+Maryland) student, says he began collecting cassettes this past summer when he ordered Swimming Through Sunlight on tape. Gallen, an avid vinyl collector, found himself purchasing tapes instead of vinyl because vinyl became "too expensive." Since ordering Swimming Through Sunlight, Gallen has added six cassettes to his collection, including music from the bands Woods, Parentz and Real Estate.
"It's about having something you can hold in your hands … that are kind of yours," Gallen said. "It's like getting a closer relationship to the music."
And that is exactly what Total Babes' singer/guitarist Chris Brown (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic//Chris+Brown) said the band was striving for when they released the limited-availability cassette.
"Just having that physical copy … shows more support as opposed to buying an mp3 and putting it on your iPod," Brown said. "There were only 100 copies of the tape made, so having one of those hundred gives you more of an intimate feeling for the record knowing you are one of very few people who have it."

I'm imagining the people buying these are the same people who 10 years ago laughed at their friends for buying a CD and said "A CD? Ha! Nobody buys a copy of a disc anymore...digital is where it's at! I just download it to my iPod and I'm good to go! IT'S THE COOLEST!
