I think it was in this thread a couple of months ago I posted about how outrageous car rental prices were. Well, I saw a GMA story yesterday that explained why it's an actual thing and not just my poor ability to find deals.

Thanks to Covid, no one needed a rental car last year, so rental companies started selling off their fleets (up to 50% in some cases). This was further accelerated by the fact that used car sales went up, presumably because many people weren't exactly flush with cash to buy a new car. So rental stock was way down coming into 2021. Now that we can all travel again, more people than normal are looking to drive, rental companies are scrambling, BUT their ability to buy new car fleets has been stymied by slower new car production because of supply chain issues.

Hence, trying to rent an SUV for 9 days in August, I get prices routinely over $2K. So, I guess we'll be driving our own SUV and rationalizing it as still being fewer miles on the car after the trip than if Covid had never happened. In the meantime, I'll keep checking because who knows, maybe by late July prices will be better.

As we were heating up the oven (walled, 2 oven combo) last night for texas toast, some heating element coil (?) sparked, glowed and the oven started smoking. 1.5 small fire extinguishers later, it was put out.

The extinguishers left a lot of crap all over (but fair trade-off for sure) the kitchen area. Wipe, sweep, mop, tossed out some open food stuff lying around, did a couple loads in the dish washer, couple loads in the clothes washer (mats). Ended up eating soup vs spaghetti. Fun evening.

Going to check out at new ovens or maybe even an appliance 4-piece package so we can get a matching set (resale value). And buy new fire extinguishers.

My suggestion, have at least a couple fire extinguishers around. I'm not sure what would have happened without them handy.

I am not a big fan of heights in general but for some reason, skydiving intrigues me. I just can't get over the idea of jumping out of a perfectly good plane which is kind of a requirement to skydive. This looks like indoor skydiving to me which does not intrigue me but actually being outdoors.

Fire extinguishers are pretty simple: PASS.
Pull the pin
Aim the nozzle (at the material that is burning, NOT the flames)
Squeeze the trigger
Sweep the nozzle back and forth.

so yesterday I was going to meet some dude and buy some HDMI cables from him. my gps directed me to pfeiffer road 71 instead of 275. That is odd I thought. When I came home I came south on 71 and 275 to Reed Hartman as normal. And then was shocked and block at Cornell by about 10 police cars that had closed the highway. I turned right and went to long way home. BUt now I knew...my GPS was right! I could see nothing. NO cars, nothing...but police cars don't simply block off the entire road for just a normal accident. Also there was a news cameraman on the corner. I tried to yell at him to see what was going on but he went into the bushes.

When I got home I googled the area. I found an article about an accident where a car hit a pedastrian. That explained that. The next day there was a new article about a teen from a nearby highschool was the victim. They had died at the hospital. She was 17 years old. She was not in the crosswalk when she was struck.

I finally figured out that joining groups is the only way to make FB worthwhile. I have joined multiple groups and enjoy posting/reading about music, sports, working out, grilling, etc. I try to stay away from just plain ol' FB timeline scrolling of peoples' posts. It's basically the next generation version of this type of place.

Cartman can only compare if he is like a raccoon to his living spaces. This lady (the original Cartwoman, not the daughter) is on her fourth house in the last 25 years that she has absolutely destroyed. This family once had quite a few properties but she has utterly destroyed every single house she lives in. She even bought a pre-fab home and parked it next to one of her unlivable houses, never set it on a foundation or anything. Raccoons broke in and destroyed that place too. The raccoons did a quicker job than she eventually would have. That trait passed onto one of her sons. I heard a story how his toilet quit working but he just continued to shit in it until he couldn’t anymore. Eventually his house was destroyed by fire.

I've got an FB friend, guy I went to HS with & have known basically forever. He absolutely lives to post obits every. single. day. I'm talking every published obit from a 2-3 county area around where we grew up.

He's like the p.r. guy for the grim reaper or something.

It's a morbid obsession afaic.

But that's been a thing where I grew up forever. An unnatural obsession (and unhealthy, IMO) with news of death. Far & away THE most popular thing on local radio for decades was the 3x a day reading of all the obituaries. In its heyday, that probably had a 50.0+ rating if ratings had been a thing, literally over half the households in the area were listening to at least the 450pm edition of that particular grim spectacle.

The fewer random strangers I encounter on FB, the better I like it. I have enough trouble managing to tolerate strangers with one degree of separation (i.e. friends of friends). I even have an acronym for it: OPI (Other People's Idiots"

I don't actually know most of my friends on FB. I mean, I know them in some sense, but many of them are old friends from HS. That was the original reason I even got on FB, was back in 2008/09 we were trying to plan a 20-year reunion and locating as many people as we can. So I don't really interact with many of them and haven't seen most of them but maybe once or twice in the past 30 years. I really don't care to hear what they have to say about things.

Some of the communities I've joined through groups are similar to this one - people I've know who follow certain bands and we've been online together from Usenet to message boards to FB. I've met a lot of them once or twice, but those are the people I interact with online on a daily basis and "know" pretty well. People I know in real life I don't interact with much online. There's no need. Other groups, I'm there mainly for information and I rarely interact with anyone, stupid, smart or in between.

Mainly due to the nature of my former job, there are hundreds of people with whom I had relatively short (some as short as one month working in close physical and spiritual proximity at a camp,) but close/intense relationships. I mean, the first new ministry I was in charge of starting was in 1989, and I moved from that town in 1991. but in those two years, our small (max 6 person) leadership team met, prayed, ate, and served together every week. Plus we were all in college so we hung out together a ton as well. We've kept in touch through various channels since then, but the last time I've seen *any* of them face to face was my wedding...in 1998. It's an absolute joy, though, to keep up with their lives and to have an easy platform for longer private message chains that I would burn out on trying to type on a phone for a text message.

And then of course all the former high school kids. I care and want to know what's going on with, well, all of them. Just checked: my list is a little over 2700 people. I'm guessing there are maybe 20 that I've never met in person, most of those FOFCers. My favorite never-met-in-person one was a guy that one of my closest friends knew in college. My friend would tell me story after story about various escapades he had with Colin. Apparently, my friend also told Colin story after story about his escapades with me as well. It's been less than a year or so that Colin and I both responded to a message chain on our mutual friend's timeline and were both like "WHOA!!!!! WAIT A FREAKING MINUTE!!! DUDE, I KNOW YOUR NAME AND EVERYTHING YOU DID IN HIGH SCHOOL/COLLEGE!!!"

I am always amazed when I run into someone I am FB friends with, but they never interact with me there, yet they more less know the stuff I share. I'm thinking " I had no idea you paid any attention to me, because I have ni idea what goes on in your life".

The main feed is so inundated with advertisements now and commercial pages that it's hard to really see the genuine stuff that my friends share. I think of my 300 or so friends only about 30-40 ever interact. I could probably jettison the rest and never really miss a beat.

As for family, I know that my step mom stalks my family. She uses my Dad's account and interacts with all sorts of friends and family but never us. But then occasionally, references something we've shared. It has def inhibited my sharing.

I like meeting FOFCers when I get the chance. I've probably met 6 or 7 of you guys. Always down to expand the circle too if someone wishes. Some of you have become my very best friends. I'm much closer to distant friends, than I am to people in closer proximity.

It doesn't really have that much more functionality than a text-chat, but crucially I have a couple groups with friends outside the US, and international text fees make a txt chain impossible. Likewise there are plenty of other apps that do the same thing or better, but that involves forcing everyone to install & setup some app, whereas most folks are already on Facebook.

It took some work, but my Facebook wall makes me happy. Almost zero weird right-wing stuff, and the rest of the politics and complaining is a small part of what I've evolved my wall into. I want to see what's going with my friends and families, I want to see posts from a wide range of groups whose posts makes me happy, and I want info about what's going on locally with businesses and charities. The latter is pretty huge - I don't even understood how that stuff got around, or how people did volunteer work, before Facebook. Some dog rescue group is having a happy hour event at a local brewery - awesome, I hear about it on Facebook, I see who's probably going, and that's my Friday afternoon activity.

I've never, even before Facebook, been someone who just calls people to chat. So keeping up with people has generally been about seeing them at parties every month or two, or maybe once a year or so when I went back home. But that type of thing starts to dwindle as you get older. So I really appreciate the ability just to see what people are up to - jobs, kids, pets, vacations, etc.

I mostly eye-balled the ingredients but it's basically

1/2 pound bacon
1/2 pound sausage
mozerella cheese (at least 8 oz)
parmesian cheese
pizza sauce (I go light on this. If I want more sauce I can always just add a dip on the side)
oregano
garlic powder
minced garlic (I love garlic)
Taco seasoning packet
Egg roll wraps

Mix the above and place on the egg roll wraps

After wrapping (and sealing with a dab of water) I rub olive oil on them and air fry on 380 degrees. First for four minutes, flip 'em, then for another 4 minutes. That gave me a perfect amount of crispiness.

I made 16 rolls in this particular batch but that can vary based on how much filling I put on each roll. I generally aim for a "good spoonful"

I've had several that were solidly in the middle of the pack, few that ever stood out as being bottom of the barrel bad.

This one has been on a steady decline. On a main street leading into downtown Athens, surrounded by some of the most notorious apartment complexes in the town, I think it's finally caught up to them. We bought a $3200 bedroom set. Mirror had a crack and they gave my wife shit about it even though they were wrong. Then they delivered the rest of our bed as the rest of it at in our bedroom in big boxes for 2 months. The legs were broke and we had to re-schedule. We also got night stands with wireless chargers and those do not work.

So I called the customer care about all of this and they refused to deal. They wanted to give me store gift cards. At this point I want nothing to do with this company.

Finally we got %100 dollars back and tech to cpme out about the 4 issues (Nick in the new mirror, doors that dont close correctly on the bed and the chargers that dont work). I just wanted $300. Now they have to deal with all the BS and fuck them.

That may not be all of it. But it is enough. And the indian speaking people were worth less. No help at all.

To be honest, it is going to come across a little needy or weird to your neighbors - a little like a Free Candy van. They are more likely to steer clear of you with a sign like that.

I live in a secure apartment building where nobody can go to any other floor except their own. I am lucky if I see someone from my floor once every three months (which is fine with me since I am so introverted) since my hours of entry/exit vary from theirs.

My favorite thing was an old retired guy from the building that I used to run into a couple of times a week in the elevator. Eventually I worked out that he used to go up and down the elevator several times a day to "get something from his car" as an excuse to run into his neighbors and strike up a conversation.

Not knowing what your building is like, if you did something like washing/vacuuming your car or something similar that you gave you a reason to run into your neighbors and start a dialogue.

My wife and I will go there on our anniversary because they do a good job with her food needs and the chef is very flexible and willing to make what she can eat.

It sort of felt like my coming out party as an adult, being able to pay for such an extravagant meal, with my mom and wife as the special guests. There were no limits on food, we had wine, appetizers, salads, entree's, and dessert. The full 2.5+hr experience. My Mom sacrificed a ton for me to get where I am professionally, and I and my family owe her a lot. She's always been very willing to help out, she paid our mortgage for a year when I was in my late 30's and had to essentially start my career over again. My wife works tirelessly for our family, and with the boys getting older, and them all together right now, it made sense to treat this as something special. I got my reservations about 3 weeks ago for today.

I had budgeted about $500 for dinner. It wasn't quite that much after the tip, but our server, who was a working mom, looked out for us, deserved the nice one she got. Looking back at where I've been in life, this was a top of the mountain feeling and worth celebrating.

I have a friend who sat outside on a Saturday with mimosas and beer tinkering with his bikes, and he invited anyone to come by that wanted to have their bike checked out (or to just have a beer). Some people did come by. I know he's met a bunch of people just hanging outside there and talking to peoples about their dogs or bikes when they walk by.

With our neighborhood facebook group, there's a lot of opportunities for that type of thing people put out there.

For real. We went out for just a general meal the other night. Ended up $40 total for the 3 of us. Daughter got an adult meal of chicken fingers and after a bite was like these fingers are shit. To be fair she was right and she ate 1, I really wanted to be like, this is why we get the kids meal.

At 11, my daughter has been to way more "fancy" restaurants than I went to in my first 30 years of life. It's easy to do more expensive meals when no one in the family drinks or does so seldomly. We can get out of $400 restaurants for less than 1/2 price just because we don't drink.

I work an hour from home and on my 2013 Sonata, I put 180K miles on it in 7 years. That also included carting
my daughter to weekend softball tournaments all over the midwest and southeast during that time as well. When I sold it in 2019, I got next to nothing for it.

I was amazed at how little the car was worth even in very good condition and with a ton of features. Meanwhile, I bought Caitlin a 2010 Kia Forte in 2015 that had 118K miles for $7000. It became a hand-me-down to Mackenzie last year before we decided to upgrade. I was able to sell it to CarMax with 141K miles for $2400. I basically rented that car for 5 years at less than $1K a year and got more for it than my fully loaded Sonata. Crazy.

YES. We have to drive through another neighborhood to get out to the streets, and down our street into the other neighborhood, they are building about 8 houses in a row. So a few weeks ago, I'm driving my daughter home from school and we see a beaver laying in the road. We doubled back so we could confirm it's beaverdom, but when we got back it was gone.

Switch to today. Driving my daughter to school and we see a beaver a little ways away from the last spot, this time looking dead in the turn lane. I come back home to shower after I drop her off and it's still laying in the turn lane, so I do the respectful thing and drive over it without hitting it with my tires.

So 30 minutes later I'm on my way to work and sure enough, the beaver is gone. I assume 1 of 3 things occurred:

1) the beaver was alive and scampered off;
2) the beaver was dead and someone stopped on a heavily trafficked road to move a dead animal;
3) my daughter and I are having beaver hallucinations.

Too early for animal control which is why there's no 4th option, option 2 seems unlikely given the number of dead woodland creatures we see in the vicinity, and not sure about #1 since I don't think beavers play dead.

Ditto. At one point it was necessary, but everything is online now so why? Last August I signed a contract for the installation of 10 windows. They told me they'd be able to schedule installation for 2 months out, it ended up being about 5. Not really surprising. They got 9 windows then in but had measured the 10th wrong, and said they re-ordered it, and would put me at the front of the install list when they got it in about a month. I don't hear anything for about 3 months, I check in, they said it got sent to some rural Idaho warehouse by mistake, but they'll get it back and have it installed in a month. A couple more months go by. They call and say they're definitely going to have it in next month, the week of May 24. That's come and gone and I've heard nothing.

I check their Facebook page, which averages about 20 posts a month, and they've had zero posts since the end of April. No other sign that they've gone out of business or anything, and they have been around for decades.

Meanwhile I'm sitting here with 9 installed windows, about $9,000 worth installed, and I haven't paid a cent for them.

I guess I just lay low at this point and see what happens. But I don't feel like I need to constantly badger this company to pay them. I have called them dozens and dozens of times and it has always been a struggle, same as with every other contractor I've ever hired here. I guess just because the city population and wealth has exploded and existing companies just aren't setup for what Boise has become.

Edit: More annoyingly, I'm currently down a bathroom because of water damage. The restoration company moved quickly, home insurance approved the bid, and told me they'd definitely put the money into my checking account last Tuesday. That never happened, and they haven't responded to any of my emails or voicemails. It takes at lest 5 attempted contacts to get a response to anything home related. Even when I just want to give them money, but also when they're supposed to give me money.

My high school went viral for something good, which is always nice - the valedictorian gave away a $40,000 scholarship award so it could be given to a student who will attend community college like her mother did.

I've seen this on CNN and other places, but they're all leaving out the best part - this isn't even really a scholarship, it's just 4 $10k privately-funded cash awards given every year as long as she's in school, she could have spent them on anything she wanted. She just decided that since she's going to Harvard on a full scholarship there are other students at Fitchburg High (the public high school in a blue collar town), who could use it a lot more.

Though I kind of feel bad for the person who wins it next year, who will also probably have a full ride or close to it to somewhere, as most winners of this award do.

Edit: I got the "honorable mention" version of this award where you get about $250 for writing the scholarship board a letter about what school you're going to and what you want to study, etc. I probably spent it on beer.

This has not been a good last 12 months for my family health-wise. From my mom's pancreas surgery, to my uncle's mysterious debilitating episode, to me getting COVID, to my dad's surprise quad bypass. Now my mom is back on the clock.

She's been having hearing problems out of one ear recently. Doctor did some checks, and saw she had something past her eardrum that was likely causing issues. Went to a specialist, and the diagnosis was "CSF otorrhea". Apparently the multiple ear infections she's had over her life weakened a bone in the roof of her inner ear, and it finally dissolved away and is now leaking spinal fluid into her inner ear.

My mom had the surgery this morning to fix this issue. My dad just called, and she is out of surgery and everything went fine.

I told both of them, no more hospital visits for a while, please.

I would guess your using a VPN and/or your ISP doesn't use static IPs so those sites think you're on a different browser/device every time. I have the same issue if/when I remember to use my VPN.

Took our pug, Otis, to the vet. He has a reaction to the shot he gets so we give him Benadryl before appt.
Otis would not take the pill at home, so we tried again in the waiting room of the vet. I stuck it in his mouth and held it closed. He waited and spit it out. My wife tried, he spit it out, tried again and Otis didnt spit it out. We waited a few more minutes then got called back. Went tot he scale first. Otis does not like the scale so that took a bit. Then we weighed the cat in the carrier and went back to the exam room. Otis wandered, went under my wifes chair, etc.
We left the vet and was driving home and we get a call from the vet. They found the Benadryl. Otis waited until we couldnt see him and spit it out.

There's no real right answer, every dog is different.

I managed to watch "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and thought to myself during the closing credits as the mall closed up, how I missed those days, the boredom, the wondering of what I was to do those nights, finding friends (or not) and wasting the rest of the weekend.

I just watched a blast from the past "Over the Edge" which I liked watched a few times on HBO when I was probably 10 or 11 and I was blown away by the idea of kids in revolt. Now 45, I watch it and it's just so bizarre to watch movies like that. I think it's the naturalism of real kids being used in the movie, the characters were types I recognized growing up.

To me, those types of films encapsulated closer to reality the mundanity and boredom of teen life. And I wasn't even a teen yet.

Hell, when those movies came out I was between 4 and 7, but they were always on cable as I got older.

I dunno, I guess it's strange at this point in life to be the teachers or adults in fast times that can't understand the youth, or the adults/parents in Over the Edge, who are oblivious and scared of their kids.

Claude is a fucking riot. That scene is burned into my memory as a kid first watching it.

Bragging that he took speed before the quiz and then finding out it's acid and it's an essay on Bosch paintings was twisted. I like it later when the teacher is handing out the emergency meeting and stating they just want to find Carl and that he isn't in trouble and he mouths the word "bullshit".

When the girl dances with the gun and aims it at Carl was one of those nail biters.

Matt Dillon was damn hilarious too being proud that he was incorrible and Carl correcting him that it was incorrigible. I mean the Sopranos stole that for multiple seasons.

I think the secret weapon was the girl that was Cory's friend Abby. I watched the documentary and she was an extra when they pooled kids in Colorado where it was filmed (the leads are all New Yorkers which is why they seem to be mumblers but it's really their dialect).

But Abby man, she mocks Dillon's shooting ("You couldn't hit an elephant if it came up and kissed you), rebuffed his advances, and then tells off the deranged cop while holding a giant globe ("Suck it pig"). I mean that's a trifecta of moments (I think BIll Simmons in the Rewatchables would say she was the heat check).

I mean the dialogue was adlibbed but on point. The kids were really naturalistic.

The soundtrack is amazing when you think about how it caught some bands before their peak.

I think the story while a little over the top did really express the boredom and frustration.

It even has a cameo from the prosecutor of My Cousin Vinny as Sloan!

I just love it as a movie. I really like that the setup is kind of at the boil over point and not a long beginning. The kids are already friends and know each other.

I also sympathize with the parents and even Doberman the cop. I don't think they were fascists or deserved the reaction. I think it's sad at the end that even though Doberman arrests Carl, he isn't about putting him away for life or anything, he's telling him he's gotta make better choices and that it's up to him. That's why the ending is a little more extreme (Not to say about Ritchie (Matt Dillon)'s fate).

I wish there were more movies that were this naturalistic.

It's not a race though. One waffle every 15 minutes is pretty doable. You don't even have to speed through it, you can wash it down with a drink without having to dunk them in water or whatever the heck they do with the hotdog speed-eating.

The only way you won't finish is if you weigh it down unnecessarily. Hell, I eat 3 syrup-soaked pancakes in 5 minutes usually. Giving myself 4-6 hours to finish off 20 waffles would be pretty easy because there's a clear goal.

I was in Phoenix back in 2017 during this exact week when it was 120+ and they were canceling flights and it wasn't as bad an experience as being in the south when it's 90 with 85% humidity.

That said, today in KY we are somehow being gifted a mostly sunny day with highs struggling to reach 70. It's glorious.
