Maybe I'm crazy but I'm not all that impressed. Making a robot do better mechanical motions than us seems like it's one of the easier things to do

SI

The actual mechanical stuff probably isn't too hard. Tracking the ball and making the correct decision on how to hit the ball and where to hit it is probably much harder, and especially at speed.

I haven't seen any advertising for them, but they have them. And they are still pretty darn good.

Last year, they pretty much stopped serving them right after St. Patty's Day, so if you want one, better hurry.

I've had a fun minor league sports week. I saw my first game from a suite Saturday - it was the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads, so it was nothing super-fancy, but it was pretty modern and the arena is located inside of Boise's best hotel. There were a couple of rows of seats hanging over the ice attached to what was basically a niceish hotel room, with a TV and sofas and food and such. Tonight I'm seeing the NBDL's Stampede from a courtside season ticket dinner table, where apparently it's pretty common for basketballs to bounce over and knock over your beer and food. If I had just a bit more money and time, I'd love to be a season ticket holder for both, I bet it's a fun scene, they have random events like "Stampede draft party night". I can't even imagine what an NBDL draft party entails, but I'd love to go. Are the fans getting all worked up over what guy they're taking in the 5th round, or is it just an excuse to get out and drink? I imagine there's this little minor league sports fan community in town that takes in all the Steelheads/Stampedes/Hawks stuff. Probably the same people over and over, since Boise is pretty much a million miles from any other city and any other sports and entertainment option.

A handful of Idaho hockey fans have filed a potentially class action lawsuit against the owner of a Boise arena, contending that they were victims of a beer scam, paying more for a "large" beer that held the same amount of liquid as a "small."

Looks like it's time for me to head back to school! That's pretty cool that they have a student price, makes sense, just never knew about it.

With all the free Classic Doctor Who episodes I watch and other free stuff, $99 still seems like a good deal to me. 49 would be awesome, but, I can't complain too much. :)

The sheer amount of discounts students get it almost feels like I would pick up a class at a community college once in a while and then use that to get deals for things. Software alone can likely cover the cost of a class.

Speaking of that, I did that for a bunch of software from Autodesk. Like Maya and a couple of others I can't remember at the moment. Easily over $5K in software I got for free. A class at a community college is what, maybe $100 dollars?

$350ish for me. Still, if you go for high end software, you are winning in the end.

I can walk to one. It closed for a bit and came back under new management. I think that management left, or I just didn't see the guy anymore. I worked some part time at a local gas station at one point and (sadly) knew what like 95% of all the people that came in there smoked. I'd just be like 1 pack or 2 and it would blow their minds sometimes. Obviously a complete waste of my brain space.

And really it's no different from when I used to work at Starbucks and I'd do the same thing.

No complaint from me at all. I just thought it was amusing. I mean I know they knew me and my order, but I didn't imagine they'd be like "hey he's late" necessarily.

I know the owner of an Outback Steakhouse and would call up one of the managers if I knew he was working there that day and call in an order for a BLT. It would be ready for me when I got there and it was great seeing everyone's face when I sat at the bar and no more than two minutes I'd have my BLT. Good times....good times.

So I waited an hour and a half online this morning to get Comic Con tickets and wasn't selected to buy in their randomized order, which sucks.

I am okay with it in the scheme of things because I know the tickets are limited, and the demand is high.

But what is frustrating is that they give you no indication after they randomize the order on whether you even have a legit shot to get tickets. It would seem to be a reasonably easy thing to do. If you have, let's say, 10000 tickets available and this such and such person is the 15000th in line, well, you can more or less let them know they're not likely to get tickets and they can choose whether to still stay on or not at that point.

Exactly what I thought would happen just did. My flight was canceled a couple of minutes ago (I was on my way out the door and did one last check on the flight). Called the travel agent and now there's nothing available to DC until mid-morning Wednesday because all the passengers on other flights that were canceled (unlike mine which kept getting delayed) have had a chance to rebook. I can work from home so that's ok, but it doesn't look good since everyone else flew in last night and made it into the office.

I was up at my cousin's house this weekend, and his 7 year old son asked me what SXSW was. I told him it meant "South by Southwest" and it is a big music, movie, and tech festival. He asked what bands were there, and I told him it is mostly bands people never have heard of that are trying to become famous, but also sometimes famous people play. I told him that Justin Bieber played last week. His reply was awesome: "How? I thought he was in jail." :D

I bet if I went back a year, and two years, I'd find similar posts I made like this one...

My company (a charter school) founder is a huge college basketball fan. Every year, we run a huge brackets pool, people receiving up to 5 brackets, based on tenure. Back in the day, before I got here, the CFO used to manually calculate everything (this alone should tell you about priorities, he did nothing for the balance of March and early April but this).

I came along a couple years ago. After unsuccessfully trying to sway the powers that be to pick one site (say Yahoo!) and lift the restricted access for the time of tournament, and have everyone enter brackets there (legally, I guess it looks bad that employees are "gambling" on company time, should the Board of Education see this...but it's OK that we do it in general. Logic not a strong point here!), I built brackets in Excel, and they all tie back to a master score sheet. Initial setup is a little tedious, but scoring is a breeze.

Since yesterday, I've beat my head against the wall multiple times. The instructions are pretty simple: Save the file as FirstnameLastname#ofentry. Email back to me.

I've received so far this morning:

One person who completed the brackets in Excel...then took a screen shot and pasted the screen shot into his return email.

Another who sent 5 separate emails, changing the subject line of the email in the format described above, but named each file "Brackets" (sure, I can rename, but not the point!)

And a 3rd who filled out 4 brackets...then for some reason moving the file into a new workbook, away from the hidden tabs that calculate scoring in the original file. But he named them right!

tl;dr I WORK WITH IDIOTS

I saw a guy this morning wearing an old school Eagles jacket who looked almost exactly like Randall Cunningham. I know that it wasn't actually him because he was under 6' tall, and he was working maintenance in a federal building in Raleigh, NC.

But I had questions. Do you know you look like Randall Cunningham? Is that why you have the jacket? Is that why you became an Eagles fan in the first place?

Moving hot dogs back to the "do not consume" list. Feel like I wanna die today.

I rarely eat hot dogs. When I was like six or seven I once threw up after eating a couple of hot dogs and ever since then I very rarely eat them. There is a taco place nearby, however, that also serves some hot dogs. Every time I've gone there I've stuck with the tacos, but the last time I was there they had a chorizo mac and cheese hot dog. It sounded too good to pass up, so I ordered one. I was right. It was delicious. I crave one now. This place is an exception to my general anti-hot dog rule.

I guess I kind of knew this already, and have heard all the horror stories, but lots of sports parents/organizations are total douchebags.

Played our first two games of a mite (8 & under) hockey tournament. 13 kids, all first year kids, but one, in his 2nd year. And he's 6 (coach's son, started at 5). So we're playing White Minor level.

In order, there is Red Major, Red Minor, White Major, White Minor, Blue (no designation, these are typically 5 year olds).

Game one, before we even started, one of the mom's from the other team told anyone who'd listen "they're all 6!!". Awkward you'd announce it to nobody in particular. There was not one kid smaller than our biggest kids.

Game 2, neighboring district, including the son of somebody I went to HS with. I know this kid's an 8 year old, third year of organized hockey.

Sure, by the rules, they all qualify for any mite team, they're within age parameters. But it's just so skeevy.

Maybe it's the bitterness talking, but I'd like to think I'd be embarrassed as a parent to place my kid on a team he surpassed the level of play a year+.

I'm not sure I recall anything quite like the past 48 hours or so. 3 former school/classmates (two from my graduating class of a hundred or so, one from the class just ahead of us) all died abruptly. And within an hour or so of hearing of the third death, we got a call about the wife of a local scoutmaster who passed suddenly as well.

It's sobering, perhaps the most I've felt my own mortality since discovering it in my late teens. When you're about to turn 47 you rationally know that there's a very good chance there's less in front of you than behind you but a sequence like this really puts the spotlight on that fact.

I'm guessing there's a thread for this, but I'm irritated and cranky in general today and don't want to take the time to search for it.

/rant on/

I really really hate iOS7. They had a perfectly good UIX and they went and redesigned the whole thing. So what, now instead of dragging left to search for apps from my homescreen i have to get the right "pulldown" from the top. Because if I get the wrong one then I get the fullscreen pulldown. And the bar at the bottom that gets pulled up seems so much more intrusive and less obvious .

Just some freaking arrogance to go and completely redesign your UIX. Makes me sorry I finally I upgraded my iPad to iOS7 frankly, and is a key driver in ensuring I won't be getting an iPhone or another iPad. I just find it literally...painful to use. It's probably resulted in a 40-50% decrease in the amount of use my iPad gets.

Fucking Apple

//rant offf//

irritated for plenty of other reasons today anyways.

I don't think so, but then again, with everything I have gone through over the past 2 months it could be something subconscious that I am not realizing.

I do have an Ambien prescription to pick up today, I have been off of it for a long time and I haven't had to use it much. I haven't felt comfortable calling and asking for them to fill the script, especially with me taking my pain pills from surgery. Damn good day of noon hour basketball. Two games going on smoothly. Four extra guys waiting for games. Good players for every team. It also helps when there are fewer complainers and fighters who look to bitch about every little thing.

I probably played for almost two hours..and I still felt good enough like I could have kept playing.

I start doing open gym again about three months ago(off for 9 months or so), twice a week, and its paying off big time as I've made a more conscience effort to not drink soda and eat poorly. Had a banana prior to playing and then a double cheeseburger (burger king. Super healthy right? Whatever..it hits the spot) with water after.

All that said I've probably lost ten pounds in three months. I've never looked overweight at 200 lbs (im 5'10") as I have a pretty solid body so whenever people guess its usually 150/160 and they're shocked when I say 200. If I can get down to 180 that'd be ideal and then I can stay there which will help my knees out a bit more with all the sports I play throughout the year.

It was just nice to bang around down low and actually rebound over bigger guys since my knees never allowed me to do so before as well. But I've got a nice cut on my stomach from someone's nails and a few more on my arms and hands... so maybe I need to get away from banging down low.

It's the ending a, which signals the feminine. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single dude's name that ends in a, but I can think of a ton of women's names (Dana, Drea, Erica, Anna, Svetlana, Brenda, Bertha, Jessica, Angela, Tatiana, Sophia, etc.)

I have to get a PET scan tomorrow. For the 24 hours before the scan, I cannot drink caffeine and have to eat low carb, with a very specific list of foods that are "ok":
"Limit your carbohydrate intake for 24 hours prior to your
PET/CT scan. Here are some suggestions of what you can eat:
meat, fish, cheese, eggs, grapefruit, lettuce, tomato (raw), mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage, cucumber, celery, cauliflower and sugar free beverages. You should avoid milk, nuts, cereals, fruits and vegetables (unless listed above), sweets, breads, potatoes, rice, pasta, juices, oatmeal, baked goods and gum."

Now, I'm a girl that knows about balance so I don't go overboard too often on carbs. But man, my plate of scrambled eggs, sautee'd mushrooms, steamed asparagus and roast cauliflower looks really imbalanced to me.

Oh yeah, the "best" part about the scan is no food tomorrow for the 6 hours before the scan. And my scan is actually at 2p.m., though I have to get to the clinic at 1 for the injection.

I pity my coworkers tomorrow. :D

A grapefruit had ~26g carbs, about 60% of that is sugar, I'm surprised that's allowed! I'm eating a ketogenic diet, that jumped out at me on that list. Tomatos are 2nd on the list with 5g carbs in a tomato.

Thanks to the 3 inches of snow last night, this winter is officially the snowiest ever in Metro Detroit with a total of 94.8 inches of snow. The old record was 93.6 inches set back in 1880-81.

I took 2 a few months ago and it was miserable. To boot, they only called for one of mine and I think they skipped over the other one(both have similar names) because #2's appointment was 15 mins after the first. So I tried to be patient and wait and it ended in me wasting my time and rescheduling the other appointment.

I am about to make a decision to go back out on the road for work.

I know I have been wined and dined by several companies locally and it's helped me with my $ and benefit situation at work...but I can't turn down doubling or tripling my income....and then if I take the Director position...it's a chance of making four or five times what I am making now.

It screams to me I have to do it.

What does it mean if I do go for it...

Less immediate time with my kids...what I mean by that is...I will still get my Weds, but I would lose the every other weekend I have...BUT...I would be home for 10 days every month and I would get them for the 10 days. So in all actuality I would see them more than I do now...just 1 time a month instead of 2 times.

I have discussed this with the kids, and they are on board with it.

What are they doing wrong?

Let's see...

Agent #1 was told that I was looking at a house in a particular price range. The first three she sent me were all higher than that range. I re-sent her my price range in writing. The next 6 houses were all higher than that range.

Agent #2 started off well. He sent me stuff that was in my range and we discussed what I was looking for. I wanted to set up a time for him to show me a couple of the houses. He didn't respond for two days. I sent him an email. No response. So I called him. 3 days later, he had someone else from his office call me. Her first words - "so, what are you looking for?" :banghead:

Agent #3 was referred to me. We had a brief conversation and she was to send me some homes. When my wife called (who is extremely sweet) a couple of days later to ask a simple question about one of the schools for one of the houses, the woman was downright rude to my wife and said "well, I don't know when I can get to you" and "it might be two weeks before I have time to answer that".

Un-fucking-believable. I think at least half of the real estate agents are mouth-breathing idiots or bored, pampered housewives who like to pretend they're playing grown up.

I'm not asking for much. Just show me listings in my price range (or tell me there's nothing in that range - which I know there is), return my emails in a timely fashion (not having someone with NO IDEA what I want call me after 4 days) and at least act that you're somewhat interested in making a few grand for less than a weeks' worth of work.

CU Tiger
04-16-2014, 07:02 PM
Most real estate agents can barely fog a mirror. The few that are good are worth their weight in gold.

The only acceptable of the above 3 to me is #1. When I have had that experience, I like to reply: "Obviously we discussed my price range. So s it a correct assumption that you are guaranteeing me you can negotiate them down to my stated range?"

If they say no...then you fire them because "I really need an agent who is either A a better listener or B a better negotiator"

:D

There's a music theater a few blocks from where I live. I pass by it every day when walking my dog.

Tonight "5 Seconds of Summer" is playing. I had no idea who they were (Wikipedia informs me that they are an Australian boy band/Youtube sensation).

There were people camping out in front of the theater as early as yesterday afternoon. There were lines around both blocks - and a few blocks on either side of the theater - by noon today.

I guess being a boy band is good business.

a couple years back we had a robin build a nest on the outdoor vent for our gas heating stove. the nest was literally smoldering, so I took the nest down. the next day, it was back. so I took it down again. this happened several times until I was struck by some inspiration and hung a rubber snake right next to the vent.

that put an abrupt end to the nest building, and the rubber snake is still there today

I'm finally having the dental work done that I complained about needing earlier in this thread, it'll be done Monday by a dentist that specializes in sedation dentistry. I'm very happy about this, as in addition to total panic when it comes to the dentist in general, I have a bad gag reflex (I literally gag every time I brush my teeth), so it will be hard for him to fix one of my molars otherwise.

I'm a bit nervous, though, that the anesthesia group that he works with did not call me on Thursday or Friday. I mean, yes, I've had a ton of surgeries (which are all in the history I gave the dentist), so we know I don't have any real issues. But I am allergic to one of the common sedatives and am on a lot of medications for my back right now. I'm hoping that there wasn't some missed communication somewhere and that this won't make the dental work get postponed...

Put me anywhere else where I might fall a long way and get hurt and that old queasy feeling returns.

I'm getting quotes on movers for the NC > FL move coming up. Contacted Atlas, United Van Lines, Mayflower and Two Men and a Truck. Went to each of their websites and filled out information. Each called me or emailed me and now we're working on getting quotes.

My wife says today "what about North American, we used them on our last move"? Ok, good idea. So I go to their website, fill out the information including phone, address and email. I get a call 30 seconds later.

"Hello?"
"Hello?"
"Hello?"

After about 10 seconds, some automated message starts playing from North American telling me to call them. Fuck you, no. First of all, I hate automated messages. Secondly, get yours working so it actually kicks in when I answer the phone. Third, I've given you my contact information. Pick up the fucking phone and make a personal phone call or at least send an email. I'm not in a position to write down your fucking number nor should I have to contact you TWICE via two different ways to start the process of getting a quote.

In short, fuck you and your anti-customer ways. If that's the response I get now, I can't imagine the fucking phone hell I'd have to go through if I (God forbid) had a claim for damaged items.

Synthesis
Sulfur mustard is the organic compound with formula (Cl-CH2CH2)2S. In the Depretz method, sulfur mustard is synthesized by treating sulfur dichloride with ethylene:
SCl2 + 2 C2H4 → (Cl-CH2CH2)2S
In the Levinstein process, disulfur dichloride is used instead:
8 S2Cl2 + 16 C2H4 → 8 (Cl-CH2CH2)2S + S8
In the Meyer method, thiodiglycol is produced from chloroethanol and potassium sulfide and chlorinated with phosphorus trichloride:
3 (HO-CH2CH2)2S + 2 PCl3 → 3 (Cl-CH2CH2)2S + 2 P(OH)3
In the Meyer-Clarke method, concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) instead of PCl3 is used as the chlorinating agent:
(HO-CH2CH2)2S + 2 HCl → (Cl-CH2CH2)2S + 2 H2O
Thionyl chloride and phosgene have also been used as chlorinating agents.
It is a viscous liquid at normal temperatures. The pure compound has a melting point of 14 °C (57 °F) and decomposes before boiling at 218 °C (424.4 °F).

Monday and Tuesday I had job interviews, so I spent most of both days preparing for them. On Monday, I received an unsolicited email about another job opportunity in the area. I figure I would review it today and respond since I would be on the road all day Tuesday due to my interview in Chicago.

10 minutes after my plane lands back in Dayton, I get a call from their recruiter who is setting up interviews in the area next week. He found my resume online and was very interested in meeting with me if I was still looking for a job and wanted to make sure I received his email, etc. I apologized for not responding sooner, but I had 2 interviews in 2 days and did not have a chance to review the email yet, etc. I tell him I would review it either that night or today and respond.

I review the position, figure what the heck and shoot him an email and say I have reviewed the opportunity and would like to schedule an interview. The response I got from him was he needed my resume and needed to ensure there was mutual interest.

Seriously, you send me two emails in two days, call me 2 hours after the second hits my email box (while I was in the air), and then you tell me you need to ensure there is mutual interest?

WTF?

This is why I can't stand corporate recruiters and HR guys...

Vending machines are a big part of my life. I like when you reach into the vending machine to grab your candy bar and that flap goes up to block you from reaching up. That’s a good invention. Before that, it was hard times for the vending machine owners. “What candy bar are you getting?” “That one … and every one on the bottom row!”

----

I was going to get a candy bar, the button I was supposed to push was HH. So I went to the side, I found the H button, I pushed it twice. Fuckin’ potato chips came out, man, because they had an HH button. For christ’s sakes, you need to let me know.

----

I want to make a vending machine that sells vending machines. It would have to be real fucking big.

----

I like vending machines… because snacks are better when they fall. If I go buy a candy bar in a store, often times I will drop it, so it reaches it’s maximum flavor potential.

So I had my fun day of dental work on Monday. For how long am I supposed to do soft foods? He filled a bunch of cavities, did a root canal, a crown, and pulled one of my wisdom teeth. I think the pulled tooth hurts the most, it's hard to tell my mouth feels weird.

Got this big annual assignment coming up at work, and we bring in resources from all over. I lead a team of 7-8 others and I got an email from one guy reporting next week, saying he wants to let me know that he has a "scheduled wellness day on Thursday 5/8".

I work for the government so I guess I should expect this type of shit but WTF is a scheduled wellness day? It sounds like "I'm going to need some R&R in advance".

I think they have had things like this for years, they're called "vacation days" and furthermore called "it's none of your darn business what I'm doing on my vacation day, be it visiting my son for his wedding day, taking the kids to a doctor appointment, or bumming around the house sans pants and watching every Ernest movie"

Talk to lungs...cows+mustard gas sounds like a terroristic plot to poison our cheese supply!

Or it sounds like an awesome new topping for chili dogs! Want mustard but don't want people to think you're weird for putting it on a chili dog? Sneak it in with the cheese!

Discovered today that my cheap but serviceable microphone that I've used to record all manner of things for the past couple of decades has died due to a bend/break right at the connector. I think I paid something like just under $20 for it ages & ages ago, pretty sure I got more than my money's worth out of it.

Made a weekend work trip to Pittsburgh..for my new job.

What did I learn.

I should have moved over to this company 2 yrs ago when I had the chance, I let people I was with "Coerce me into my decisions"

that also leads me to believe I let that same person push negativity into my life.

I realized a lot how much I love this type of job, how fun it is and how helping people change there life has always been a positive impact for me.

Time to shuck the negative thought Processes I have had for a couple of years..also know as flushing the "Buffalonian" out of me...LOL

There is a gym in my building. It's nice enough. I try to go there during lunch 2-3 days a week. It's a nice routine.

I manage to have some time Friday, so I hit the gym. I shower start putting my clothes on and realize that I forgot a fresh pair of underwear. So, my options are either to go commando or put the sweaty pair back on. Had I realized that I forgot the extra pair before working out, I could have just gone commando in the gym, but I didn't. So... I choose to put the sweaty pair back on. It was not very comfortable, but since Friday is "jeans day", I could handle it.

So, fast forward to today. I have some time again, hit the gym and... I forgot my extra underwear AGAIN. And didn't notice until AFTER I worked out AGAIN. This time I have dress pants. So, I went to Jos A Bank (which is also in the building) and bought a new pair of underwear. Of course, because it's Jos A. Bank everything in the store is "buy one get one free" so I got two pair. I hit the closest bathroom to change. I use on pair of new underwear as a towel and then put the other on. They aren't that comfortable. A little tighter than I have grown accustomed to, but better than the alternative...

Built a gutter garden on the side of the deck for strawberries. Hoping it turns out next summer. Basically the runners all hang over the edge and the fruit is easy to pick.

Also does anyone use any of these mail order garden stores? Was thinking about getting some (good) apple trees and cutting down the shitty apple trees I have. I even see they have some 5 in 1 trees with multiple strands of apples grafted onto the same one. I know it's probably going to be 3-5 years before these yield much fruit, but I will probably be here for awhile.

My death star sized lasagna just came out of the oven. Hopefully it can cool off in the next 10-15 minutes so I can have a piece before work.

I bet you ate it too quick, and now have a weird piece of skin hanging from the blister in your mouth.

Luckily it chilled out. I actually only did one layer of Ricotta and a provolone top. Tried to make it more about spinach and ground turkey. I usually make an extra large an freeze about 2/3rds for separate meals.

About a year and a half ago, I dated this girl briefly...maybe 2 months. While we were dating, she mentioned that she was cursed: everyone she dates goes on to meet their future wife right after they date her. I laughed and mentioned that it had happened to me a time or two before as well. We parted ways, and have spoken maybe once or twice since. Today I get this text message from her:

"Hi Vince. Just wanted to share some good news and say thank you. Your 'curse' has been a total blessing in my life. Adam and I got married in March. Our baby is due in November. Thank you for being the kind person that you are."
