Fantasy Draft Franchise - Seattle Mariners

I've always kind of been into fantasy drafts and always tend to do one in every game I play, from Madden to The show and even NBA. With that said, I never really end up sticking with it. I haven't played the show since 09 but this year the game has got me hooked, lots of stuff to like, and some things that could be fixed, but what game is perfect?

Anyways I decided on the Mariners as I am from Portland, and I didn't want to do a BoSox fantasy draft, seeing as they are my team and have been since I've started watching baseball about 10 or 11 years ago at the age of 9.

So like a few people before me Ive decided to start a thread here at OS, I am new and thought id like some input/debate on my roster and baseball in general. I will be using the Knight roster and trying to model my team with a good defense and with a little power in the middle of the lineup and hopefully great young pitching. Don't necessarily want to or think I will contend for a championship my first year since I kind of want to build young.

I will post full first 2 rounds and then just my player from the rounds after that.

With that said here's the draft:

Round 1

1. LAA - Josh Hamilton LF
2. SEA - Evan longoria 3B

3. OAK - Adrian Gonzalez 1B
4. TEX - Robinson Cano 2B
5. ATL - Albert Pujols 1B
6. WSH - Miguel Cabrera 1B
7. BAL - Joe mauer C
8. FLA - Mark Teixeira 1B
9. CLE - Chase Utley 2B
10. NYM - Tim Lincecum SP
11. CIN - Ubaldo Jimenez SP
12. PHI - Felix Hernandez
13. MIL - Carlos Gonzalez LF
14. CHC - Hanley Ramirez SS
15. HOU - Troy Tulowitzki SS
16. PIT - David Price SP
17. BOS - C.C. Sabathia SP
18. STL - Brian Wilson CP
19. ARI - Ian Kinsler 2B
20. COL - Ryan Braun LF
21. SF - Roy Halladay SP
22. NYY - Zack Greinke SP
23. LAD - Andrew Bailey CP
24. SD - Matt Kemp CF
25. KC - Joakim Soria CP
26. MIN - Jonathan Broxton CP
27. TB - Heath Bell CP
28. TOR - Cliff Lee SP
29. CWS - Justin Verlander SP
30. DET - Shane Victorino CF

After the first round I was surprised to see so many closers go and Robinson Cano going 4th? Hopefully ill be able to pick up an Ace in the second. I decided Evan Longoria because he is one of the top 3 players in the league in my opinion and his salary starts at 2.5m and ends at 2.7m over 3 years. Cant beat that. Amazing fielder and great hitter.
Salary for 2011 : 2.5m

Round 2

1. DET - Jayson Werth RF
2. CWS - Jose Valverde CP
3. TOR - Jimmy Rollins SS
4. TB - Dustin Pedroia 2B
5. MIN - Joey Votto 1B
6. KC - Alex Rodriguez 3B
7. SD - Carlos Marmol CP
8. LAD - Josh Johnson SP
9. NYY - Jonathan Papelbon CP
10. SF - Buster Posey C
11. COL - Kevin Youkilis 3B
12. ARI - Houston Street CP
13. STL - Carl Crawford LF
14. BOS - Matt Cain SP
15. PIT - Adam Wainwright SP
16. HOU - Neftali Feliz CP
17. CHC - Dan Haren SP
18. MIL - Brandon Phillips 2B
19. PIL - Matt Holiday LF
20. CIN - David Wright 3B
21. NYM - Carlos Beltran RF
22. CLE - Johan Santana SP
23. FLA - Jose Bautista RF
24. BAL - Jose Reyes SS
25. WSH - Grady Sizemore CF
26. ATL - Adrain Beltre 3B
27. TEX - Chand Billingsley SP
28. OAK - Jake Peavy SP
29. SEA - Jon Lester SP
30. LAA - Shin-Soo Choo RF

Round 2 goes well, Decided on Lester to have a solid Ace at 27 years old he has a few more years, and is debatable as the best lefty out there. Hes also locked for 3 more years with 4.4m in year 1 and ending at 4.9m.
Payroll for 2011: 6.9m

Round 3: Jacoby Ellsbury CF
- Wanted to keep with the good defense theme here, obviously should lead off and has amazing speed and will run down almost any ball out in center. Contract is only for 1 more year, but he wont command to much money after year 1.
Payroll for 2011: 12.5m

Round 4: Kendry Morales 1B - Solid defensively, can hit for power and contact. Although hes only under contract for 1 year, for 2.9m. Im hopeing he wont want to much this offseason.
Payroll for 2011: 15.4m

Round 5: Ricky Romero SP - Another Lefty, either #2 or 3, Under contract for 4 years with 2.1m in year 1 and ending at 2.4m. Should be a solid starter for a long time.
Payroll for 2011: 17.5m

Round 6: Daniel bard RP - Has all the tools to become a great reliever. Only under contract for 1 more year at 460k but shouldn't take too much next year. Throws really hard and can get alot of strikeouts, possible closer down the road also.
Payroll for 2011: 17.96m

Round 7: Carlos Santana C
- Great pickup in my opinion in round 7, solid across the board with "A" potential and only 24 years old. 420k for this year and will need to resign at the end of the year. Hopefully these 1 year guys wont hit me to hard next year.
Payroll for 2011: 18.38m

Round 8: Aroldis Chapman RP
- Another fire arm reliever, and again another possible closer down the road. The pin is lookin to shape up good and young. Under contract for 5 years with 376k in year 1 and ending at 457k.
Payroll for 2011: 18.837m

Round 9: Domonic Brown RF
- Staying with the youngin'g, Domonic has great potential to be a great hitter with good to great speed out in RF, solid fielding should be fine. Under contract for only 1 year worth 420k. Maybe picking up a vet for the rotation in the next round or 2.
Payroll for 2011: 19.257m

Round 10: Barry Zito - Sort of a vet, had some great numbers a few years ago. Should be able to do fine in the #3 or 4 spot. Got him contracted for 3 years at 3.1m in year 1 and and ending at 3.4m. And those of you counting, that makes 3 lefties, definitley need to pick up a couple right hander's to finish the rotation.
Payroll for 2011: 22.357m

Round 11: Alcides Escobar SS - Going to hit .250 if im lucky, but has the possibility of hitting 2, with great speed and great defense. only 24 years old with "A" potential and under contract for 1 year at 440k.
Payroll for 2011: 22.797m

Round 12: Koji Uehara CP - Solid Closer for a year or 2 until i want to make Bard or Chapman my closer. Only makin 810k for 1 year, probably only going to sign him for 1 maybe 2 years after this.
Payroll for 2011: 23.60m

Round 13: Carl Pavano SP
- Going to eat this one, just to get a right hander in the rotation. 1 year at 4.7m is kinda tough, lets hope this works out.
Payroll for 2011: 28.3m

Round 14: Jamey Carrol 2B
- Good fielder, decent hitter and old. only picking him up to let a younger 2B develop for a year, maybe 2 at the most. At 37 don't think ill get to much out of him, just a spot holder and hopefully a little productivity. 1 year at 1.13m isn't to bad for a speedy fielder in the middle of the diamond.
Payroll for 2011: 24.737m

Round 15: Joba Chamberlain RP - possibility of making him a starter, dont think ill do it. But he will be my beast middle reliever. 1m for 1 year but wont command to much in the off season. good stuff and should get some good work in from the pin.
Payroll for 2011: 25.737m

Round 16: Michael Pineda SP - kind of an experiment here, goin with a 22 year old rookie for my 5 probably. solid stuff and can go 7 hopefully I can get him run support. and only making 96k for year 1 and 97k in year 2. After 16 rounds the payroll for 2011 is sitting at 25.833m

Round 17: Arthur Rhodes RP - OLDIE in its true form, little to no stamina, hes lookin to by my setup man for this year as i develop the youngins in the pin with him. At 41 years old im lookin just for 1 year from him and assuming he retires I wont even have to see him on the resign screen. 1 year at 2.67m isnt to bad for a nice setup imo.
Payroll for 2011: 28.5m

Round 18: Mike Montgomery
- Solid pitcher at 21 years old should work well in the long relief spot to give me a few innings here and there, another Leftie, so possibly being able to make a deal down the road if possible to pick up a rightie or a position player. signed for 2 years at 263k and 276k.
Payroll for 2011: 28.76m

Round 19: Juan Pierre
LF - Sacrificing some power, passing up Raul Ibanez here, maybe picking him up in a round or 2 if hes there. Great speed and good fielding. A little old but again, hes kind of a place holder for a younger guy in the next year or 2. Sitting on a 1 year contract at 1.27m.
Payroll for 2011: 30.03m

Round 20: Jorge Posada 1B - Going to possibly DH or just pitch hit, needed a little more power. Another 1 and done guy for me here. Sitting on a 1 year contract at 2.6m.
Payroll for 2011: 32.63m

Round 21: David Ross C
- another pitch hitter and backup for Carlos. got him locked down for 2 years at 541k year 1 and 568k year 2. solid defender and can hit .280 for me.
Payroll for 2011: 33.177m

Round 22: Michael Saunders LF
- Good speed, good fielder, good bat. "A" Potential LF to take the spot of juan pierre once the time comes. only 24 years old and could do some damage on the base pads off the bench this year. Only 420k for 1 year.
Payroll for 2011: 33.597m

Round 23: Alexi Armarista 2B
- Another solid all around player with good speed, contact, and fielding and should take over the spot from Jamey Carrol after year 1. 22 years old sitting on a 2 year contract with 307k in year 1 and 322k year 2.
Payroll for 2011: 33.904m

Round 24: Pedro Feliz 3B - Decent fielder, kind of an oldie, but can play 1B,LF,SS, and RF. 1.47m over 3 years with 466k in year 1 and 514k in year 3.
Payroll for 2011: 34.37m

Round 25: Jim Thome 1B
- probably going to switch between him and posada at DH tryin to find some power since im short quite a bit. Again, another 1 and done probably so i can work the minors and bring a few people up next year. Sitting on a 1.1m contract for 1 year.
25 man 2011 Payroll for the Seattle Mariners: 35.47m

AAA is a collection of "A", "B", and a couple "C" prospects. I dont plan to compete for a title this season, but I hope to mess up a few teams on my way. Next year or the year after I should be in a good position. Big thing im worried about is all the 1 year contracts, but i should be able to resign the majority, if not all of the prospects I want to keep. My bullpen is great and has amazing young talent and the starting 5 should be capable of keeping me close in games, so if the speed and bats can make it a good game, im hopin for 80 wins in year 1, going to be playin 1 game a series and will try to keep this thread up to date.

Let me know what you guys think of the draft and your expectations. Will be playing on All-Star pitching and hitting.

Thanks for reading.

You wasted a third round pick on Jacoby Ellsbury?

Wow.

Re: Fantasy Draft Franchise - Seattle Mariners

Eh, If he stays healthy hes going to steal 60-70 maybe 80+ bases a year and can hit .300 or close to it with great fielding. Hes going to create RBI opporunities for Longoria. Ya there might have been a "better" option but he fits how I wanted to play.

Wow.

Ellsbury goes early 3rd round so if you want him you gotta take him then. How could arguably the best lead off hitter in the game be a waste? He beats out grounders to short more often than not. Big time weapon in the game.

oh yea, I'm rollin with Pineda right now, 2-0 after 3 series with a 1.83 era and 1.1 whip.

And Sacrafice, that's exactly what i was thinking. He creates scoring opportunities for the 3,4, and 5 hitters.

A little update here, Currently I'm sitting at 6-3, tied for first with Texas.

First game was a tight game against oakland but cam out on top with Carl Pavano getting the W and won 4-3. Domonic brown goes 3-5, a double and 2 RBI's. Won the series 2-1

Second game I decided to pitch with Ricky Romero, I got hammered by Texas, Adrian Gonzalez and Manny both ripped me hard. I couldnt keep anything down in the zone. Lost 4-10. On a good note, Domonic Brown ripped one down the right field line for a 2 run HR. Won the series 2-1.

Last game I played I beat up on Cleavland a little, Brown going deep again hittin very well and winning 8-1. Pineda had a strong outing with 5 K's and only 1 ER. Shaping up to be decent, sitting at 6-3 as stated before and start the next series against Toranto today.

Pretty much got worked. Got ahead in the count alot but could get people in. Pop up after pop up. Was driving me nuts. Drop to 3rd in standings, but its still early. Domonic Brown is lighting up the ball right now, lets see how long he can keep it going.

And thanks OSU, if a mod could move this that would be great, didnt know there was a separate forum for this. Thanks.
