Game #19
TEXAS 5, SEATTLE 3
A.J. Pierzynski lined three doubles in the win.
4/20/13
Arlington, TX (AP) – The Seattle Mariners got a solid pitching performance from youngster Blake Beavan, then watched as their bullpen imploded again in a 5-3 loss to the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Saturday evening. A.J. Pierzynski went 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs to help lead the Rangers to the victory.
Seattle (8-11) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Michael Saunders homered to right off of Matt Harrison. The two-run shot was Saunders fourth round tripper on the season.
That lead did not last though. Elvis Andrus reached second on an infield single and throwing error from Kyle Seager. Adrian Beltre lined a two out single to center to score Andrus cutting the lead in half. Nelson Cruz slipped a single through the left side of the infield and A.J. Pierzynski worked an 11 pitch at bat before lining a double off of the wall in right to score both Beltre and Cruz to make it 3-2.
Blake Beavan would settle down from there and would not allow another run as he pitched seven innings, scattering 11 hits and striking out four.
The Mariners would tie the game in the top of the sixth. Kelly Shoppach doubled to right center and advanced to third on an infield single by Jason Bay. He would score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.
Seattle also blew a couple of opportunities in this game. In the top of the fifth, Robert Andino was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a fly out to left fielder David Murphy. In the top of the eighth, Kyle Seager was gunned down at the plate by Murphy on a single to left to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, A.J. Pierzynski greeted reliever Charlie Furbush with a lead off double. Mitch Moreland singled to right, but pinch runner Craig Gentry stopped at third. Carter Capps came on in relief of Furbush and struck out Ian Kinsler, then intentionally walked Leonis Martin after pinch runner Jurickson Profar stole second, to load the bases and setup the double play.
Pinch hitter Lance Berkman came up and Jason Bay made a bad decision. He caught a deep foul fly ball in the right field corner, allowing Gentry to tag up and score, giving Texas the lead. Elvis Andrus then doubled to score Profar to make it 5-3.
Joe Nathan came on in the ninth to nail down his fifth save.
The loss was Seattle's fourth in their last five and dropped them 3 1/2 games back in the American League West.
The series will conclude on Sunday afternoon with Brandon Maurer (1-1, 2.53) matching up against Derek Holland (1-2, 3.72).
