CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE RUSHES TO ITS 7TH STRAIGHT
Lone Beach State gets one from Cal State Fullerton, 77-75

CSUN d. PAC, 79-53

Feb. 9, Northridge CA - Cal State Northridge stormed to its seventh straight victory with an impressive 79-53 rout of Pacific. The Matadors struggled early but went on a 11-0 run en route to a hefty 35-25 halftime lead. The Tigers never threatened as their offense were thrown in complete disarray by the Matadors vaunted pressing defense.

Lavelle Liberty, who was named Player of the Game, played his best game as a college player, leading the Matadors with a career high 19 points. Emeka Barrett and Tarick Hoskin contributed 12 and 11 points respectively while Trevor Simms had 9 markers and 9 boards. Freshman point guard Cedric Elsey and senior center Byron McLemore led the Tigers with 12 and 10 points respectively.

LBSU d. CSF, 77-75

Feb. 9, Fullerton CA - Long Beach State got back at first round tormentor Cal State Fullerton with a close 77-75 victory. The 49ers have won their second game in the last 3 games while the Titans have now lost two straight. Moreso, it was a duel between the conference’s two prolific scorers, Jerrold Paulsen and Jeremey McGrath. However, it was Amadou Lamonte and his last minute 10-foot clutch shot that turned out to be the game winner.

The game was close all the way with the first half ending in a tie, 38-all. A 5-point blitz by Jeremy McGrath gave the 49ers the early upper hand in the second half, 43-38, but the Titans came back to tie the game at 46-all. The lead changed hands 5 times from that point until Evgueni Sokolov and Jerrold Paulsen combined to give the lead back to the Titans stretching it further to 8 at 61-53. But the 49ers. led by Rafael Morales and again McGrath, came back cutting the lead to a single point, 72-73 with 2:07 left in the ballgame. After Paulsen connected on a jumper, McGrath pumped a three, his 5th in the game, tying the count 75-all for the last time with 1:45 remaining. Then after two misses by both teams, a crowded McGrath threw the ball inside to , who in turn saw an open Lamonte by the right baseline.

McGrath scored a team high 22 points, including 4 triples, for the 49ers and was named Player of the Game. Morales and Lamonte finished with 14 and 11 respectively. Paulsen was a point better in the duel with 23 points but it was freshman forward Evgueni Sokolov stole the limelight was again with an impressive double-double performance of 15 points and 15 rebounds.

HIGHLANDERS HANG ON TO 1ST SPOT DESPITE LOSS TO THE ANTEATERS, 74-68
Mustangs too good in the road for the Aggies, 70-60

UCI d. UCR, 74-68

Feb. 9, Irvine CA - UC Irvine avenged its defeat in the first round to get back at erstwhile conference leader UC Riverside with a wire-to-wire victory in front of an ecstatic crowd at the Bren Events Center. It was the Anteaters’ second straight win and the Highlanders’ third setback in their last 5 games sending ominous signals to Riverside coach Raymond Rose of peaking too soon.

After a 16-3 run early in the first half en route to a 44-31 halftime lead, the Anteaters were never really threatened. Saddled with foul troubles, the Highlanders had difficulty coming back after reaching penalty with still 8 minuted remaining in the game. The closest they got was 7 at 63-70 but a triple by freshman Gordon Wagner brought the Anteaters back to a double-digit advantage.

Butch Sherman regained his touch in the middle with a sterling double-double performance of 20 points and 12 rebounds. But it was the point guard Wagner, who also had 20 points mostly on timely baskets holding the Highlanders at bay throughout the game, who snatched Player of the Game honors. Borislav Djordic added 9 markers and 9 boards for the Anteaters. Jameel Alexander and Frank Derozan led the Highlanders with 14 and 12 respectively.

CP d. UCD, 70-60

Feb. 9, Davis - Cal Poly asserted its mastery over UC Davis with a convincing 70-60 victory to move up to the top half after the loss of the Cal State Fullerton Titans to the Long Beach State 49ers. It was nip and tuck early in the game but when Cal Poly, which took the half at 35-31, unleashed an 11-0 blast midway in the second there was no denying the Mustangs.

Freshman Jai Johnson led the Mustangs with 15 points and was named Player of the Game. Byron Nelson chipped in 12 while Warren Lopez and Zakee Meredith, who sprained an ankle early in the game, had 10 apiece. Ron Ramelli was the game high scorer with 18 points for the Aggies. Andrew Grundy had 10 while Oumar N’Diaye a double-double 10 markers and a game high 11 boards.

HIGHLANDERS FALL AGAIN, THIS TIME AGAINST THE TITANS
Mustangs, Tigers rout separate rivals

CSF d. UCR, 80-73

Feb. 11, Riverside CA - Cal State Fullerton bounced back from a two-game losing skid to surprise erstwhile conference leader UC Riverside in front of a shocked crowd at the Student Recreation Center, 80-73. The Highlanders now lost 2 straight and their 4th on the last 6 games but hope to bounce back when they play host to lowly Long Beach State on February 15.

Reggie Miller exploded with 10 unanswered points capped by a three-pointer to pull the Titans away midway in the second half after being down 36-39 at the half. Another blast by the Titans this time a crippling 16-2 run broke the backs of the Highlanders.

Miller finished with 18 points but it was Jerrold Paulsen, who has been consistent from the initial get go that was named Player of the Game. Paulsen, the conference leading scorere with a 19.7 average, led all scorers with 21 points. Center Vytautas Gedminas and point man Evan Prato added 13 and 10 for the Titans. Evgueni Sokolov had only 7 points but picked up 11 boards. Orlando Rodgers led the Highlanders with a double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds while Elijah Brooks and Jameel Alexander contributed 14 and 14 respectively.

CP d. UCI, 90-69

Feb. 11, Irvine CA - Cal Poly steamrolled to an easy wire-to-wire victory and snatched third spot in the conference standings against a listless UC Irvine squad, 90-69. The Mustangs shot 56% from the field while the Anteaters were error prone at both ends of the court turning the ball over 21 times.

The Mustangs raced to an early 10-point lead at 30-20, then had a crippling 16-4 run to end the first half with a comfortable 21-point advantage, 51-30. The Anteaters failed to muster a comeback bid after hotshot Jabari Chase sprained an ankle early in the game. Chase finished with 8 points but was 3 of 14 from the field, including a miserable 0 of 7 from the three-point area.

Adam Scheer was the game top scorer with 22 points and was adjudged Player of the Game. Reserve forward Jameer Rollins played impressively with 11 points while Ira Cornette and Lamar Williams came off the bench and chipped in 11 apiece. Borislav Djordic was the only Anteater in fighting form scoring a team high 21 points. Butch Sherman and Paco Aguilar added 13 and 10 respectively.

PAC d. UCSB, 78-50

Feb. 11, Santa Barbara CA - Pacific asserted its supremacy over UC Santa Barbara routing the Gauchos in front of a lean crowd at the Gaucho Gym, 78-50. The Tigers unleashed an early 11-0 run en route to a 37-25 halftime lead and after Amir Chambers, whose hamstring injury is visibly slowing him down, went into foul troubles at the start of the final half, the Tigers were never threatened.

Byron McLemore scored a game high 12 points to win Player of the Game honors. Reserve guards Petras Jelenic and Matt Ager chipped in 13 and 11 respectively while Paco Fernandez contributed a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds. UCR d. LBSU, 78-52

Feb. 15, Riverside CA - UC Riverside bounced back from a 2-game losing skien with a 78-52 dumping of Long Beach State in front of a jam packed crowd at the Student Recreation Center. The Highlanders were ferocious from the start limiting the 49ers to 17 first half points to take the half at 34-17. Midway in the second half they virtually clinched the game with a 30-point 55-25 advantage.

Frank Derozan, who was the Player of the Game, led the Highlanders with a game high 18 points while Jameel Alexander chipped in 12. Reid Joiner was the only 49er in double-figures with 10 markers. Long Beach State hotshot Jeremy McGrath was a non-factor scoring only 7.

CSUN d. UCSB, 81-72

Feb. 15, Northridge CA - Cal State Northridge continued its torrid streak winning its eighth straight at the expense of cellar-dwelling UC Santa Barbara, 81-72. The game was tight in the first half with the Matadors up by only a single field goal 43-32 at halftime. But by the final 8th minute mark, the Matadors would hold a comfortable 11-point 69-58 lead which the Gauchos failed to threaten.

Freshman center Trevor Simms finished with a game high double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds to take Player of the Game honors. Backup center Brian Hancock chipped in 12 while guards Tarick Hoskin, who had a miserable 2 of 14 from the field, and David Chatfield added 1 and 10 respectively. MUSTANGS RALLY IN TOUGH 102-100 OT WIN AGAINST THE TITANS
Aggies geta back at the Tigers, 81-72

CP d. CSF, 102-100 OT

Feb. 15, San Luis Obispo CA - Cal Poly repeated over Cal State Fullerton but this time it had to go though the eye of a needle. The Mustangs survived the Titans winning in overtime, 102-100 after Warren Lopez forced the game to a 5-minute extension with a three pointer 28 seconds from the end of regulation.

The Mustangs had to come from behind after being down 38-49 at the half. At the 9:59 mark the ball game with tied at 61-all. There would be 10 deadlocks and 7 lead changes from thereon. The Titans were comfortably ahead, 75-70, but things went bad when point guard par excellence Evan Prato, who at that point had already dished out 12 assists, fouled out with 3 minutes left in regulation. After Corey Becker tied the ball game at 82-all with an and-1 situation, Jerrold Paulsen responded with another trifecta to give the Titans a 3-point 85-82 lead with 34 seconds remaining in regulation then came Lopez with a shot from the left elbow.

The Titans zoomed ahead to an early 5-point lead in overtime but Becker and Lopez combined to pull the Mustangs within striking distance. Lopez completed a three-point play to hand the Mustangs the lead but Reggie Miller quickly responded to restore the upper hand for the Titans, 99-98, with 45 ticks remaining. After Lopez countered with a basket underneath, Adam Scheer stole an inbound pass and was fouled. Scheer made good both his gift shots for a 3-point 102-99 lead going into the final 25 seconds. In the game’s last play the Mustangs defense stood forth then sent Paulsen to the free throw line for a pair of free shots with 5 seconds remaining. Paulsen canned the first but intentionally missed the second but the ball went to the waiting hands of Becker.

Lopez, who led the Mustangs with 24 points, was named Player of the Game for his game-long heroics. Scheer chipped in 21 while freshmen Jai Johnson and Lamar Williams contributed 13 and 11 respectively. Becker finished with 10 markers but grabbed a game high 16 boards. Conference points leader Paulsen top scored with 29 points with 4 triple. Miller had 4 three-pointers likewise for a total of 20 while Bree finished with 18. Prato had a double-double 11 markers and 12 assists.

UCD d. PAC, 81-72

Feb. 15, Stockton CA
- UC Davis got back at Pacific to tie their series with an impressive 80-61 win at the Spanos Center. The Aggies built an early lead then stretched it a 20-point bubble before the half ended at 47-30. The listless Tigers were never in the game after that.

Player of the Game Ron Ramelli had a game high 23 points, who received offensive support from Phil Blackgrove with 17. Leon Drayton and Andrew Grundy added 14 and 12 respectively for the Aggies. The Tigers were led by Patrick Zamora, who got out of a slump to lead the Tigers with 18 points, including 4 triples, and Jose Fernandez with 13.

HIGHLANDERS BACK ON TRACK, TRASH THE CAL POLY MUSTANGS 71-62
Matadors rally to beat the Aggies for 9th straight triumph, 84-69

UCR d. CP, 71-62

Feb. 23, San Luis Obispo CA
- UC Riverside is definitely back in tracks after a 71-62 trashing of Cal Poly. The Mustangs zoomed to an early 10-point lead but Jameel Alexander singlehandedly pulled the Highlanders within striking distance 30-35 at the half

It was a totally different story midway in the second half as the Highlanders poured it on with back-to-back threes by forward Adrian Beeler and point guard Kennedy Bills to tie the count at 46-all with 7:37 remaining. Another three by Bills put the Highlanders in the lead for the very first time. From there, Alexander combined with Elijah Brooks to pull the Highlanders away for good.

Alexander finished with 18 points, including 4 treys, and was named Player of the Game. Brooks added a double-double 15 and 10 while Bills and center Orlando Rodgers had 10 apiece. Warren Lopez was again impressive for the Mustangs with a game high 21 markers and 12 boards while freshman playmaker Jai Johnson chipped in 10.

CSUN d. UCD, 84-69

Feb. 23, Davis CA
- Cal State Northridge had to come from behind a 14-point early deficit in the first half to breeze past UC Davis for its ninth straight victory, 84-69. The Matadors leveled the count a minute from halftime but the Aggies responded to take the half at 40-39. From thereon, it was all Matadors as they poured it on while the Aggies guns went blank.

Junior college buddies Lavelle Liberty, who took Player of the Game honors, and Emeka Barrett led the Matadors in scoring wth 15 and 14 points respectively while Tarick Hoskin chipped in 10. Andrew Grundy was the game’s high point man with 18 points for the Aggies. Ron Ramelli added 16 and Oumar N’diaye 12.

LONG BEACH STATE GETS BACK AT PACIFC, 77-53
UC Irvine sends UC Santa Barbara in the brink of elimination, 69-59

LBSU d. PAC, 77-53

Feb. 23, Long Beach CA - Long Beach State avenged its first round loss to Pacific with a 77-53 rout in front of a boisterous crowd at the Pyramid. Goran Vojinovic found his usual deadly form playing superbly at both ends of the court to virtually clink the game for the 49ers with plenty of time left in the second half.

The 49ers were already up by 10 at the half, 32-22, after limiting the Tigers to a mere 21% shooting from the field. Vojinovic finished with game high double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to take Player of the Game honors. Jeremy McGrath and freshman forward Allen Pilgrim chipped in 10 apiece. Another freshman Patrick Zamora led the Tigers with 14 while Jose Fernandez had 11.

UCI d. UCSB, 69-59

Feb. 23, Irvine CA - UC Irvine coasted to an easy 69-59 win at the expense of UC Santa Barbara. The Anteaters led 36-29 lead at half time, with Butch Sherman taking care of the boards and a combined Steven Finley and Gordon Wagner on the offensive they made sure they will not be any comeback in the second half.

Finley, who was named Player of the Game, and Wagner led the scoring for the Anteaters with 16 and 24 respectively while Sherman had only 7 points but a prodigious 18 rebounds. Amir Chambers was high point man for the Gauchos with Ben Simmons adding 12.

The loss by UC Santa Barbara and the victory earlier by Long Beach State threw the Gauchos in a precarious situation. At 9th and last place, they now lie 3 games behind the 49ers in the run up for qualification to the Big West Tournament with only 3 scheduled games left for both teams. The Gauchos need to win all their games while the 49ers lose theirs and worse should a tie happens every stats shall favor the 49ers.
