TIGERS HANG TIGHT AS PACIFIC GETS BACK AT CAL POLY 60-57
Zamora and Fernandez in peak form heading to the Tournament

Mar. 1, Stockton CA - Pacific hanged tight and beat Cal Poly to the delight of an appreciative crowd at the Spanos Center, 60-57. The Tigers led by as many as 10 points after 30-all count at halftime but the Mustangs came back to tie the count at 55-all with 3 minutes remaining in the game.

Jose Fernandez, who outplayed Warren Lopez in the post, scored on a short jumper then after Corey Becker tied it at 57-all, Fernandez tipped his own miss to restore the lead back to the Tigers, 59-57, time down to 46 seconds. In the ensuing play, setting up one good shot the Mustangs were able to get the ball to their finest three-point shooter, Jai Johnson. The rookie point guard had a clear shot but the ball bounced off the rim and out. After a series of fouls, Patrick Zamora made it a 3-point game with a free throw with 2.3 ticks left.

Zamora top scored for 20 points and his game long brilliance earned him Player of the Game honors despite the late game heroics of Fernandez, who had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Adam Scheer led the Mustangs with 14 points with Becker chipping with 10. Lopez had 8 markers but hauled down a game high 11 boards while Johnson finished with 8.

The Mustangs have played their last regular game ending the conference with a 9-7 record, which is good for no. 4. The win by the Tigers put them a half game behind the no. 5 Cal State Fullerton Titans but they will be expecting a tough game against the UC Riverside Highlanders in their final game. The Titans are 7-7 and with 2 more games left in their schedule will most likely retain the no. 5 seed with a game against the lowly UC Santa Barbara Gauchos.

The Highlanders need to win their last game against the Pacific Tigers while the Cal State Northridge Matadors have to win both of their remaining 2 games. Should the Matadors win only one, the Highlanders will bring home the title for the 6th time n the last 7 years by virtue of a better win-loss record for the season. The Highlanders could tie the Matadors with the most of number of wins this season but may have fewer losses. The Matadors will play at home this afternoon against the Long Beach State 49ers.

Halftime was all even at 56-all, but the Highlanders struggled going into the final 5 minutes as the Aggies posted a 67-61 advantage after an emphatic dunk by Andrew Grundy. MATADORS A WIN AWAY FROM THE TITLE AFTER A 78-47 ROMP OF THE 49ERS
Must-win against the Titans should the Highlanders beat the Tigers

Mar. 2, Northridge CA - Cal State Northridge got a free ticket to the Big West Season Championship but it still has to win their last game against the Cal State Fullerton Titans to claim the title. The Titans are no pushovers however having the best shooting guards in the conference and a rookie freshman forward in Evgueni Sokolov, who has been consistent all year long. One worry is that sturdy forward Lorenzo Paez had pulled a hamstring and may be doubtful.

The Matadors run down a n outclass and listless Long Beach State squad leaving them by a mile at the finish, 76-47. Down 20-34 at the half, the 49ers gave up midway in the final canto after the Matadors blitzed to a crippling 16-0 run that had the 49ers scoreless for almost 7 minutes.

Cal State Northridge led by 20 with 7 minutes left in the game giving Coach Bobby Braswell the opportunity to rest his starters and get his reserves more playing time. It was a well-balanced game and not one of the Matadors went into double-figures. Backup center Brian Hancock led the Matadors with 8 points and a game high 10 rebounds earning him the Player of the Game honors. Taricq Hoskin and rookie freshman Bobby Joe Parks chipped in 9 apiece. Jeremy McGrath, who has relinquished the conference scoring crown to Cal State Fullerton’s Jerrold Paulsen, led all scorers with 15 points while Goran Vojinovic finished with 9 markers and 8 boards.

THE CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE MATADORS ARE THE SEASON CHAMPIONS
Tournament Finals awaits a Matadors-Highlanders return match

CSUN d. CSF, 96-75

Mar. 4, Northridge CA - The Cal State Northridge Matadors are the official Big West Regular Season Champion. It took them 9 years since they last held the title way back in 2007. The Matadors now are the proverbial heavy favorites to finally win the Big West Tournament Championship after coming up close as the losing finalists in 3 of the 4 years. Cal State Northridge lost to UC Riverside in 2013, the following year 2014 to UC Davis, then came back in 2016 only to lose again t UC Riverside.

Coach Bobby Braswell, delighted that his boys have hit their peak at the right time, says he doesn’t want his team to get cocky after ripping Cal State Fullerton on the road, extending their unbeatable win streak to 13 games. The Matadors defeated the Titans, 96-75, in typical Matadors uptempo fashion. Senior guard Tarick Hoskin scored a game high 22 points to take Player of the Game honors. Emeka Barrett chipped in 18 while freshman center Trevor Simms added 11. Reggie Miller and Big West scoring champion Jerrold Paulsen led the Titans with 15 and 14 points respectively while rookie forward Evgueni Sokolov contributed a double-double 12 markers and 10 boards and Vytaustas Gedminas a game high 13 rebounds.

UCR d. PAC, 69-57

Mar. 4, Stockton CA - UC Riverside may been dethroned as Season Regular Champion but the fight is not over yet. The Highlanders vow to be on the floor when the Tournament Title will be at stake at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The Highlanders were hoping for a Cal State Northridge loss against Cal State Fullerton to steal and regain the title but that didn’t happen.

Nevertheless it was business as usual as the Highlanders played brilliantly against the Pacific Tigers. The Highlanders defense limited the Tigers to only 40% shooting en route to an easy 69-57 victory at the Spanos Center. Orlando Rodgers had an all-around game of 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists to take Player of the Game honors. Brian Goodell and Jameer Alexander led the Highlanders with 12 and 11 points respectively while freshman Elijah Brooks added 10. Another freshman Patrick Zamora once again was the Tigers best shooter with a game high 16 points on 4 treys. Forwards Byron McLemore and Jose Fernandez contributed 13 and 12 respectively.

UCD d. UCI, 73-60

Mar. 4, Davis CA - UC Davis got back at UCI Irvine, 73-60, and snatched the no. 6 seed from Pacific. The victory prevented the Aggies to play the defending Tournament champions UC Riverside Highlanders in the first round and instead arrange a return match against the Anteaters.

Andrew Grundy played a brilliant game finishing with a double-double 21 point and 12 rebounds. Oumar N’diaye playing his best game yet as an Aggie chipped in 20 makers while backup center Brandon Clifford added 10. Borislav Djordic led the Anteaters with 16 points while Jabari Chase and Steven Finley had 11 apiece.

UCSB d. LBSU, 74-68

Mar. 4, Santa Barbara CA - The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos ended their season in style with a 74-68 whopping of the Long Beach State 49ers. It was a non-bearing game for the 49ers but they wished they could have done well to pump them up against top seed cal State Northridge. in the Tournament round round.

Amir Chambers and Joaquin Valdez were untouchables underneath where the Gauchos destroyed the 49ers, outscoring them 42-8 inside the paint. Chambers, who was the unanimous Player of the Game, unloaded a game high double-double 32 points and 15 rebounds. Valdez added 21 markers and 8 boards. Combined they were 22 of 31 for a high 71% from the field. Jeremy McGrath was the lone 49er in double-figures with 23 points, including 6 treys.
