I had to "fudge" the numbers a bit since there weren't many voters and I wanted the numbers to be more realistic, but they all represents the votes. I'll probably try to do something like this each year.

Beyond the family business storyline, that's a pretty good win for SFU. To go in and handle a NCAA Tournament team on the road is impressive. Glad to see this back!
Dinko just seems to be the more consistent in-game coach, but the Bears got hot last season.

Good to be back Been playing more video games with my kids and wife, so had less time to work on this, though it's been in the back of my mind for weeks.

November 30, 2020 St. Francis vs Monmouth [NEC]

Coming off the dominant win over his brother, St. Francis has two conference games before another stretch of non-conference opponents. This year, conference play kicks off with by welcoming Monmouth to Loretto. The Hawks are 5-3 and are projected to finish in the middle of the pack. They have a well-rounded team, with no exceptional players or qualities, but can give anyone in the conference a tough game any given night. At 3-3, Dinko is hoping to get off to a great start in conference and getting above .500 overall.

Early on, it was rough for the Red Flash. They were down 7-0 just 2 minutes in and couldn’t buy a bucket. Roberson finally hit a long two to get them on the board, but by the time we hit the first TV timeout Dinko’s team was down 12-4 and still struggling.

Coming out of the break, Casey Tyler hit a three and Paul Horner got an AND-1 and fast break layup on back to back possessions to bring St. Francis back to within 1 point: 13-12. Horner was key for the Red Flash in the first half as Keita struggled to get his shots to fall.

The first half ended with a bang, as Casey Tyler hit a half court shot to give him 13 points and the team a 32-23 lead.

Things just got better for the Red Flash in the second half, as they settled into a rhythm and found themselves up 17 at the midway point of the second half. Thanks to 60% shooting from three (compared to Monmouth’s 13% shooting from deep), St. Francis ended up with a 69-51 victory.

Casey Tyler had 23 points and 6 rebounds to lead the team, while Paul Horner and Zygis Keita combined for 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Around the NCAA
  • Northern Colorado followed up their loss to St. Francis with 63-60 loss to Alabama State and 67-59 victory over Longwood.
  • #1 UConn lost to 4-5 UTEP 79-78

Around the NBA
  • The Memphis Grizzlies went 40-42 last season, but have rode Ja Morant plus a solid group of role players to the top of the Western Conference with a 12-5 record. Right behind them are the Mavericks (12-6) and Clippers (11-6).
  • The Milwaukee Bucks (13-4) are atop the East, but it’s the Atlanta Hawks that are the surprise of the conference. At 12-4, the Hawks are in 2nd place an are seeing Trae Young and DeMar ReRozan combine for 50 points per game.
  • Five players are averaging over 30 points per game: Anthony David, Steph Curry, Kristaps Porzingis, Bradley Beal, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
  • Trevor Merchant is on fire for the Pistons, as the rookie PG averages 27.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.

December 6, 2020 St. Francis vs Brown [non-conf]

After falling to Central Connecticut State with a rough 2nd half, the Red Flash exit conference play at 1-1 and welcome Brown to town. The Bears may have Ivy League brains, but they don’t have great height and only have 1 shooter. Knowing these limitations, Dinko felt confident that his team should be able to win this game, especially at home.

It turns out Dinko was correct. After starting out with a 15-8 and extending that to 37-23 at halftime, it was just a matter of holding on. Zygis Keita used his height effectively en route to 14 first half points.

The second half was more of the same, and the Red Flash easily won by 23 points, 75-52.

Zygis Keita finished with 20, while Noah Almond shot 100% from two, three, and the FT line to end up with 15 points. Muhamed Payne was 8-8 from thec charity stripe himself. Paul Horner continued his solid run of play, with 15 points and 8 rebounds off the bench.

Around the NCAA
  • Seton Hall is 11-0 after beating USC by 17 and defeating Duke 74-72.
  • In the last 2 weeks, Northern Colorado has gone 1-2 with losses to Vermont and Duquesne and a win over St. Peters.

Two huge wins for the Flash! Horner is looking good for you off the bench.

Yeah, totally unexpected to see this performance for 2 straight games. He also seems to grab more boards than Keita. Unsure if he's better than Zygis at rebounding, or if maybe less shots are made when he's in (due to it being the second unit).

Early signing period

The early signing period has come and gone, and there was very little impact for the Bulgarian brothers. Outside of PF Mo Gomez signing with Delaware, neither brother signed or lost out on a top target.

However, that was not true for the top prospects around the country, as 17 of the top 20 chose a college destination.
  • UNC, Duke, and Pittsburgh all signed two top 20 prospects.
  • Tulane shocked everyone by signing Jazz Grace, the #7 prospect. He’s got a great name for a New Orleans prospect.
  • The nation’s top big man remains undecided. Memphis, Tennessee’s Andre O’Hara is deciding between several SEC schools including Mississippi State, Alabama, and LSU.

December 21, 2020 Northern Colorado at Robert Morris [non-conf]

It’s been a rough start to the season for the Bears of Northern Colorado. Coming off a blowout loss to Air Force and a closer game to Washington State, Oggy’s team is 3-8. It’s going to be tough, but the Bears hope to get things right at Oggy’s alma mater: Robert Morris. The Colonials are only 4-7 overall but 2-0 in conference play. Led by Adam Norman and Tommy Zwikker, they have solid shooting but very little height. The Bears will be hoping to take advantage of their big men Randy Alvarez and Taron Guy.

The Sewall Center in the Pittsburgh suburbs was a little bit louder on this December night as they welcomed back their former player and coach. Oggy gave a wave to the fans and turned to freshman Taron Guy, telling him that there was no way that Carl Hopes or anyone else on the Colonials could stop him, and to play with confidence.

Things started amazingly well for Northern Colorado. After 2 early turnovers from Robert Morris, UNC sprinted to a 5-0 lead, turned that into a 14-5 lead, and with only 4 minutes left in the half Robert Morris had just 11 points. They could not score.

However, things turned quickly. In the last few minutes of the half, Robert Morris brought it back to a 1-point game, 31-30 as Northern Colorado completely fell apart. Only a 3 pointer by Brandon North gave the Bears some momentum at half, as they took a 3 point lead.

Northern Colorado came out calmly to start the second half, and slowly built up a lead. After a Fitzwater 3 put the Bears up 10 (51-41), they simply fed the ball to Taron Guy and easy sealed the game with a 74-57 victory.

Taron Guy had 32 points and was just way too big for RMU. The big freshman is streaky, but has shown that when the matchup is right, he can dominate.

Around the NCAA
  • St. Francis is now 6-6 after losing to Vermont and Duquesne but defeating St. Peter's.

Around the NBA
  • The Memphis Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks are still hot and atop their respective conferences with 19 wins.
  • The trade for LaMarcus Aldridge seemed strange at the time, but the Houston Rockets seem better off for it as they are just half a game out of first in the West.
  • The trade for Blake Griffin has been a disaster for Miami’s chemistry, as the team continues to struggle and is currently 11-18.
  • Damian Lillard is out for another 2-4 moths with his torn ACL and the Blazers are suffering greatly because of it. At 6-19, they have the worst record in the league.
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis were the November Players of the Month.
  • The Pistons' Trevor Merchant and OKC’s Dana Bright were the Rookies of the Month.
