Tatum and Brown power Celtics to blowout win over 76ers

The Boston Celtics' young duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined for 58 points angainst the Philadelphia 76ers.

PHILADELPHIA, PA

The Boston Celtics lost three of their four matchups against the Philadelphia 76ers last season by an average of 13 points. When these teams matched up again in the Eastern Conference First Round it was the Celtics that that swept the series winning 4-0. It is worth noting that All-Star point guard Ben Simmons was unable to play in that series due to injury.

Despite not impacting the game with his scoring, Simmons had a team-high seven assists to go with 10 rebounds.

Simmons along with the rest of the 76ers were ready to go for the season opener in Wells Fargo Center against the Celtics. The first quarter gave the impression that the game would be tightly contested throughout even though center Joel Embiid was able to score 13 of his 31 points.

The Celtics were initially outrebounded by 10 in the first quarter but closed the gap during the course of the game.

After that the Celtics took control of the game and went into halftime with a 10-point lead. The 76ers were held to 38 percent from the floor and shot 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. Unlike the first quarter where the Celtics were outrebounded 18-8, they were the more aggressive team gaining a 16-9 advantage.

76ers guards Seth Curry and Shake Milton both struggled with their shot as they finished with a combined 11% shooting.

Surprisingly for the 76ers, both forward Tobias Harris and guard Simmons had very quiet nights. Both players combined to shoot 3-of-6 from the floor for seven points. Harris only had two attempts for the entire game. Meanwhile, guards Seth Curry and Shake Milton combined for 24 attempts while only making five of them.

Both Tristan Thompson and Dwight Howard had fantastic debuts for their respective teams.

While the Celtics role players did not struggle as much as the 76ers' did, no one except new acquisition Tristan Thompson scored more than 10 points. The veteran center posted a double-double in his debut off the bench with the Celtics. Thompson was tied for second on the team in rebounds with fourth-year center Daniel Theis.

Rookie swingman Aaron Nesmith makes his first NBA three pointer.

OVERTIME NOTES:

- Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart combined for 22 of the team's 28 assists.

- Veteran center Dwight Howard also had a double-double in his debut with the 76ers finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

- Rookie Aaron Nesmith scores eight points in his NBA debut for the Celtics.

- Thies had five of the team's seven blocks.
