Milwaukee WI

The Miami Heat split their first two games, both at home, and are now playing for the first time on the road. Last season the Heat had a losing road record at 15-22. However, the Heat went 8-3 in their "road" games during the playoff run in the Walt Disney World bubble. Three of those wins came against the Milwaukee Bucks in the Conference Semifinals.

The Bucks have played just one game so far and it was a 120-125 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Bucks will have another game on the road before returning to Wisconsin for the home opener against the Heat. When these teams last clashed in the Conference Semifinals the Bucks allowed 112.8 points per game. While their defense was also not good against the 76ers, the Bucks have the players to make life difficult for anyone on the defensive end.

The Los Angeles Clippers have been on a roll offensively through their first couple of games. Each of their wins have been by an average of 16 points and a big reason for that is four-time All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard. So far this season the 10-year veteran is averaging about 41 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

While stopping a player of Leonard's capabilities is very difficult, slowing him down is possible. Unfortunately, the Phoenix Suns may be without one of their best defenders in veteran forward Jae Crowder. In the Sun's loss to the Sacramento Kings Crowder injured his heel. While the injury itself is not serious, this upcoming game against the Clippers is the second of a back-to-back set. Reports are that Crowder will most likely be held out of the first game and re-evaluated for the game against the Clippers.

MEMPHIS, TN

As expected the Brooklyn Nets are off to a fast start for the 2020-21 season thanks in part to MVP forward Kevin Durant. While Durant has scored more than 20 points in each of the team's two games, All-NBA point guard Kyrie Irving has been nearly unstoppable. Irving's shooting percentage is over 60 through two games. What may be even more impressive is the Nets' defense which is second in rating and fifth in points allowed per game.

The Memphis Grizzlies have not been a slouch on offense themselves as they have averaged 114.5 points so far. The Grizzlies have managed this without last season's rookie of the year Ja Morant. The second-year point guard has been sidelined with an ankle sprain and his absence has given others on the roster a chance to step up. Eight-year center Gorgui Dieng did that by scoring 21 points in the season opener while point guard De'Anthony Melton recorded his first career double-double in the team's second game. It will take a collective effort for the Grizzlies to maintain this level of play as the season continues.

ATLANTA, GA

Despite not being as skilled offensively as Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid, Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela has the physical capability to compete on defense. Embiid isn't the only matchup problem that the 76ers present with their lineup. Two-time All-Star point guard Ben Simmons towers over most typical NBA guards and is taller and stronger than many forwards. Trying to double team either Simmons or Embiid can lead to wide open shots for shooters like Seth Curry and Danny Green.

When it comes to shooting, especially long distance shots, there are few that do it better than Hawks point guard Trae Young. The third-year guard out of Oklahoma is more than a shooter as last season he finished third in total assists and second in assists per game. Capela makes for a good target if Young can penetrate the defense and draw attention as he gets into the lane. If a defender comes down from the perimeter to help then that leaves someone like swingman Bogdan Bogdanovic open. Bogdanovic is a threat from outside having made 37 percent of his three-point shots over the past three seasons.

SAN ANTONIO, TX

The Portland Trail Blazers defense is looking much improved compared to where they were last season. Even though the sample size is small the Trail Blazers already have on of the best defensive ratings in the league at 90.9 points per 100 possessions. So far the adding Derrick Jones Jr. and Robert Covington to the team has paid off. It also helps that the Trail Blazers have a healthy Jusuf Nurkic to hold down the interior.

The San Antonio Spurs will certainly have their hands full with a defense that is as tenacious as the Trail Blazers. At the same time the Trail Blazers will have to deal with a pretty good defense as well. The Spurs have been great on the perimeter, holding opponents to 26.8 percent on shots outside the arc. Through two games the Spurs are also 10th in steals and 11th in blocks. Despite that, the Spurs one weakness so far has been rim protection. Teams have converted nearly 67 percent of shots at least five feet from the rim.
