Re: PlayStation CEO Thinks Nintendo Makes "Babysitting Tools"

Problem is that technology is increasing and the consoles wars are a bit different than they were in the 90s. I think that Nintendo is slowly running out of tricks in terms of the home console. They've sold a ton but they can't move any solid games for real except their first-party. They are making a profit but their tech is still behind the competition, though it came out first. The handheld market is the only market they can't be touched in right now. However, their home console plans may not get too far next console generation if it's not a big enough jump from the Wii. Does a Wii with better graphics really captivate the same audience of people who were quick to jump on this generation?

They are still behind with their online model and ease of connectivity with everyone else. I'm curious to see what the next generation of consoles looks like. Sony is making their case by their model. I can definitely see them surpassing Microsoft for the simple fact that they have the better (overall) exclusives. Microsoft has Live but Sony's is improving each month with an update. I don't know. It's definitely going to be a close one. Kinect is the 360s only saving grace it seems right now.......

Nothing new here....
I love my DS and 3DS as a lot of the games for it aren't on consoles.
In any case Nintendo doesn't care as long as they keep bringing in the $$$

Move is a glowing ball version of the Wii. He has no right to insult something that Sony copied from Wii. Microsoft at least tried to somewhat original and make it you moving, not you moving the controller

This. Apparently the Babysitting Tools industry is quite lucrative.

I'm a self-respecting 35-year-old man who just sat on an airplane for several hours playing my 3DS. Then again, he only mentioned the 20-year-olds........

Completely unfair example.

There is no comparison, technically speaking, between the EyeToy and the Kinect. From a hardware standpoint the Kinect blows the EyeToy out of the water.

The EyeToy was a camera, and only a camera. It was used as such in the games that supported it, either via using photographs in games (such as created character faces in the later Tony Hawk games) or visual playback of movements the user does (such as a few of the Dance Dance Revolution games). One or two of the games could, via software, intersect what the camera sees with a 2D representation of objects in-game to emulate hitting targets on the screen, such as the EyeToy-brand party games.

By contrast, the Kinect actually builds a virtual skeletal representation of the user it sees, and also can fully track movement and distance of each joint from the sensor to do something useful with this information. Using this capability, the Kinect, unlike the EyeToy, is capable of gesture recognition and facial expression recognition. Dance Central, for example, would under no circumstances be technically possible with the EyeToy; it has no concept of skeletons, gestures, or anything else, it just watches the user and transmits video to its receiver. The Kinect can also listen to a user's voice and interpret that as a command; primarily I've only seen this used with the XBOX Dashboard to this point.

The point is that the Kinect is not just a camera. It has a camera in it, but it goes far beyond what the EyeToy ever hoped to do and to call the Kinect a ripoff of the EyeToy is extremely misguided.
