I've been trying this but two things usually happen to me.
1) I switch to a different player and the closest footballer just stops and does nothing. (edit: just to clear any confusion I'm usually just about to hit the ball or the ball is about to fall to my feet when this happens).
2) the cpu always wins and my player again does nothing.

Oh well, I mean sometimes i do get the ball but it seems very random and very few and far between.

You should realize also that not everyone plays with a star studded team. You're not going to see goals like that playing with the lesser teams in the game, and if you do clearly not as often.

I do wonder how much this comes into play. I believe in your skill as a player BFF, but I wonder if playing with the top 1% players has something to do with your ability to control the ball and generate the kind of one time shots you get.

But please keep the tutorials coming.

I experimented with the L1 first touch last night and really saw no affect.

Also what do you think the learning curve is on going from Semi to manual passing? I sort of fear the move, or becoming instantly frustrated and moving back.

I'll be the first to admit that it isn't all my skill. I'm just trying to show what the game can do. Now it is a world harder with the default guys. You really have to control the pace and try and get that singular opportunity. But the same concepts apply. Varied passes, a bit of skills to create space and to really think ahead and keep the ball moving to not let the defense time to set up. Now I'll grant that far too many times the ref allows the CPU to straight mug you. And in play now matches I'll miss stuff I would have made ten times over with my MM super squad. But I find that if I play good D and possession football, I normally get a few good chances. That's really what Fifa is all about this year, good D and creative passing. In 08 I really became hooked on driving the box and just overpowering the D, in 09 that gets me killed more often than not. But I'll say that, for me, the best opportunities and matches in Play Now come when I play with High Pressure and Offensive or Full Offensive. Problem is that if my D is bad, it can get ugly real quick.

But I will agree that Fifa's rosters straight suck. My Man Mode team of the second season I played really felt real to me. The default online and play now rosters are half-stupid. No Premiership level player should ever get disoriented as to where the ball is. I just try to play in basic mode in those matches and really let the ball fly in my Man Mode. But guys I still know the fundimental stuff works. Just play faster and more creative and the chances will come. If the CPU can do it, so can you. You've just gotta beat them to the punch....

P.S. Here's something I always remind myself when playing those
Quick Matches with my crappy Man U team. Keep my hands loose and button presses light and quick. The harder I grip the controller, the worse I play....

Exactly! Sorry for some bad spelling... My swedish is much better.

But about tappin the L1 button. Are you 100% that we are talking about L1 and not some other button? I cant make it work Brian... Need some help to figure it out...

On default 360 setup the LB will settle the ball. It should be the same with L1 for PS3. RB and LT will give you your kick up. The thing is that everything is about tapping, not holding the buttons. This is a huge difference from 08. Shooting and passing, even defending is about tapping the buttons at the right time. Turbo should be used in a manner to control pace and create space. And the positioning of the players relative to the ball really will determine your success.(whether they are facing you,etc.) Here's what I tell myself, if I'm holding buttons or triggers, I'm not playing right. The best thing I can equate this to is a fighting game. There are button combos that you have to figure out and process in real time, Hold LB to start run and pass with A while still holding the LB and a quick tap of A to do the one-two. Or use the Y for a thru-ball if the runner you just passed from is too close.

But back to the LB, it saves a multitude of sins, along with the LT(L2). It's just a matter of not committing yourself too closely into a defender. I find I have my best games when I'm patient and pass the ball and wait for the CPU to give me my opening, vs. my trying to take what isn't there. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the most patient person, but when I chill and wait, the game comes to me and I have enough stick skills to get the score. Go back to the Arena and play with the sprint into a L1 and then maybe a Ronaldo Chop. Or just come up and stop and then do a quick sideways roll into a shot. I'm not saying that anyone doesn't already know these moves, but that's what I really feel is the best way to learn how to create scoring opportunities, time in the arena. When a person spends enough time with a player in there, it becomes second nature when you get in a match, what they can and can't do, and who you might actually want to work the ball to in match for the shot. Then it just becomes a matter of creating space and time in the match for the shot. The arena is the single most important place in Fifa. Hope some of this helps.... Brian

P.S. I do wish there was a full practice mode. It would help learning team play, vs. having to do it in quick matches. Some of that stuff you just have to make up as you go along. Just keep trying different passes and see how creative you can get, even if you mess up for a while!

I would love a full practice mode! It's difficult to try out moves in-game and in the arena, especially since I don't play using that 3rd person, over the shoulder style camera.

See, that's the only way I'll play. And because of the fact that my poor old brain can't translate all of the stuff I learned going up and down to right to left. I used to be end-to-end, but now I'm only Pro Cam. I even play it on 10v10. I just try to not hold the RT long enough to go into "roadie cam." I've had a few times where I've actually scored goals where I had to point and pray because the cam didn't zoom back out fast enough on a rebound off the post, but more often than not I have a total view of the action. The funny thing is that some of those point and pray goals look really sweet on replays. BTW the back button on the controller zooms it all the way out into a bird's eye/blimp view. That really helps with seeing on throw-ins. I think it was Baa who hipped me to the ProCam, but I couldn't play this game any other way. But for you sideways guys, which is most everyone, I really do wish they had it where you could practice that way. Maybe next year? I'd just like to be able to practice my team play. So a practice mode would be awesome. Now I just try and make stuff up in match and I'm learning stuff from my buddies that are a million times better than me.
