Ducks ride Autzen crowd to victory
Defense tightens up after another sluggish start

EUGENE, OR - All week, Chip Kelly put pressure on Nick Aliotti and Brian Kudron to get more pressure on the quarterback. On Saturday, Purdue QB Joey Elliott felt the brunt of that.

The Ducks fell behind 14-0, but their pass rush got stronger as the game went on, and they racked up an astonishing TEN sacks. The relentless pressure gave the offense time to find its feet, and it did in the 4th quarter, as Jeremiah Masoli hit a wide open Ed Dickson down the middle of the field for what turned out to be the game winning score with 6:16 to go. Casey Matthews picked off Elliott on Purdue's final drive, and the Ducks escaped with a win in their home opener, 25-21.

"I was very impressed with the way our kids responded today," Coach Kelly said afterwards. "They were really amped up to get on the field in front of the home fans, and you're down 14-0 after the first quarter...I thought we showed a lot of spirit to not give up."

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)

#23 Utah @ #8 Oregon
Autzen Stadium
Eugene, OR
September 19, 2009

Cardiac Ducks come from behind again
The time for horseplay is over as Cal comes calling to Autzen next week

EUGENE, OR - There's no point in denying, avoiding or ignoring it: Oregon has issues on defense, with personnel, scheme, but most of all, coaching.

The Ducks' offense played the part of heroes again, the highlight coming early in the 4th quarter on 4th down, when Jeremiah Masoli's pump fake froze the Utah corner, springing Jamere Holland free for a 52 yard touchdown catch down the sideline that saw him 10 yards past any other player. That touchdown provided the winning margin, as the Ducks scored the final 21 points of the game to beat the Utes 38-30.

But the Oregon defense was hapless once again, giving up big play after big play. They came up with a timely sack and forced three crucial turnovers, but there is little doubt that Chip Kelly's confidence in Nick Aliotti is waning with each week. And with the explosive offense of Jeff Tedford's Cal Bears coming in next week, coaches must get on the same page, and fast.

Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 10)

Utah game produces commitment #1
Local prep star Alston will stay local to play in college

EUGENE, OR - The sidelines at Oregon football games are commonly filled with high school athletes from all over the state of Oregon. Not necessarily because they're being recruited heavily by the Ducks' coaching staff, but because it's a great and convenient venue to watch a college football game.

In the case of Jeff Alston, however, it was an opportunity to communicate with coaches who made a point of making him a priority. After being tempted to commit after the Purdue game last week, Alston didn't delay things anymore after watching the Utah game from the sidelines at Autzen, seeking out UO coaches Kelly and Kudron to offer his verbal commitment.

"They were real excited," Alston said. "They told me I was one of the top safeties on their board and they'd wait for me if I wanted to play the entire process out. I told them after the game on Saturday they wouldn't have to wait, and I was ready to be a Duck."

Alston, a native of Gresham, Oregon and a student at Sam Barlow High School, is rated as the 9th best free safety in the country, #196 overall, and #2 in the state of Oregon behind the heralded Michael King. At 6'3, 199 pounds, Alston is a big, physical safety who hits like a linebacker, and will be groomed to eventually play the role of head-hunting center fielder that T.J. Ward currently plays in the Oregon secondary.
