Mathis seals the deal as Jaguars beat Chiefs
Jacksonville, FL-- The Jaguars opened the season with a hard-fought victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, 20-14. Michael Vick played very well after being named the starter only last week. He complete 13 of 19 passes for 159 yards and a 16-yard touchdown pass to WR Jarett Dillard. Vick also carried the ball 6 times for 80 yards, a ridiculous 13.3 YPC. HB Maurice Jones-Drew played well, running 17 times for a mediocre 57 yards, but also caught 7 passes for 107 yards.
But the bulk of the credit goes to the defense. After allowing touchdowns on KC's first 2 drives, Captain Rashean Mathis gathered the D together and gave them a piece of his mind. Something he said must have worked, because the D played lights out from then on out, forcing 3 & outs on the next 3 Chiefs drives. DT John Henderson played out of his mind after ending last season in Injured Reserve. He had 5 tackles, all of them TFL's.
Vernon Gholston, who was sent to Jacksonville in the David Garrard trade, played well, with 4 tackles, 2 TFL's, and a sack. He also had a pass break up on a play when he was matched up man-to-man with explosive Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles. Said Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera after the game, "Vernon is a guy who we can move around and do a lot of things with. He played linebacker in New York, so he has experience with a bunch of positions and assignments, which is a huge asset to our team."
However, the game ball undoubtedly goes to Mathis. After Gholston recovered a Chiefs fumble with over 3 minutes remaining, the Chiefs D stepped up and forced a 3 & out. Rookie QB Drew Thompson began a clutch drive, leading Kansas City down the field and putting them in the red zone with just over a minute left. On 2nd and 10 from the 19 yard line, Thompson dropped back and looked for Dwayne Bowe, who had been isolated 1-on-1 with Mathis. Mathis baited Thompson by backing off Bowe in the end zone, then stepped in front of Bowe to pick off the pass and seal the deal for Jacksonville.
