Re: M2H's Alternate Reality Seattle Seahawks

Hawks Edge Steelers, 23-21

Forget seven years, it was a six year itch that the Seattle Seahawks scratched at Qwest Field this weekend, narrowly defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers, 23-21. It was six seasons ago that the Seahawks appeared in Super Bowl XL, which was a 21-10 loss to the Steelers in a game that was marred by questionable officiating. The Hawks’ first shot at payback a season and a half later didn’t go so well, ending in a 21-0 loss at Heinz Field. With Comeback Player of the Year candidate Ronnie Brown pacing the Seattle offense with 117 yards and a TD on 21 carries, the demon was exorcised in smash-mouth fashion, and in addition to dropping the Steelers to 6-3, the Hawks did the AFC another favor by breaking James Harrison’s collarbone. He won’t be incurring any fines for the next couple of months.

Pittsburgh opened the game with a three and out that included a sack by Brandon Mebane on the first play from scrimmage. Dave Zastudil then shanked a punt out of bounds at the 33. The Seahawks failed to move the sticks, netting 8 yards with their first three plays, and had to settle for a 42 yard Olindo Mare field goal. The Steelers’ second series was far more successful, reaching the end zone with a 5 yard run by Jonathan Dwyer. Three plays after the kickoff, Carson Palmer was picked off by rookie corner Aaron Williams, which gave the Steelers the ball at the Seattle 29. The turnover was converted into a 9 yard TD run by Dwyer, and the Hawks were down 14-3 after having run six plays. Things looked like they were going to get fugly, but the Seahawks answered by driving to A.J. Green’s touchdown on a 3 yard end-around. The second quarter was all Seattle, with the Seahawks taking a 17-14 lead on Brown’s 2 yard run 2:48 before the half. Two plays following the kickoff, on which a holding call was assessed against the Steelers, Aaron Curry appeared to have forced a Rashard Mendenhall fumble with a backfield collision, with Curry recovering it himself at the 13. But the play was subjected to a replay review and overturned. Wat? The officials favoring the Stillers over the Seahawks? With the opportunity to expand the lead before the break lost, the score was still 17-14 when the teams headed to their locker rooms.

It was almost a scoreless third quarter, with Mare hitting a 31 yard field goal with only 3 seconds remaining. On the third play after the kickoff, Antwaan Randle El got behind Earl Thomas (Shame on you, Earl!) for a 77 yard touchdown reception. The Steelers, after being dormant for about a half’s worth of play, now had a 21-20 lead and the Qwest Field faithful were getting a sinking feeling. Working the clock by pounding the rock with Brown as much as possible, the Seahawks ground their way into field goal range, and the game’s fourth lead change came with 5:27 to go when Mare drilled a 28 yard kick. The lead was a precarious 2 points, and there was plenty of time for Big Ben and the Steelers to do the Hawks in. They looked to be well on their way to doing so when Curry forced another Mendenhall fumble, which Brandon Mebane recovered and returned to the Seattle 26 with 3:11 to go. This time there was no doubt about the turnover, and the play stood up unchallenged. Two Brown runs produced a first down and brought the two minute warning. Another two yielded another movement of the chains, ensuring that the game ended with Palmer taking a knee against his old AFC North rivals.

L: Aaron Williams beats A.J. Green to the ball to pick off Carson Palmer. R: Green didn’t catch a TD pass, but he did
score on a 3 yard run.

Aaron Curry forced two Rashard Mendenhall fumbles, but only one counted. R: Earl’s going to hear a lot about this when
the film is reviewed.

Brandon Mebane's fumble recovery and Palmer's kneel-down sealed the victory.

Hawks Pummel Panthers, 37-10

The Carolina Panthers continued their quest for the first pick in the 2012 NFL draft by allowing the Seattle Seahawks to be their latest abuser. They stood aside as Ronnie Brown raced 77 yards to the house on the game’s first play from scrimmage, and Brown went on to rush for 133 yards and two scores on just 11 carries. The win gave the Seahawks as many wins as they had in all of 2010, with more games still to play than they won last season.

After Brown’s long run, Olindo Mare stretched the Seahawks’ first quarter lead to 10-0 with a 41 yard field goal. The first fifteen minutes of play ended with the Kitties getting on the board by way of a 27 yard Kris Brown kick. Mare made it 13-3 with a 50-yarder with 6:20 remaining in the half, then Earl Thomas forced a DeAngelo Williams fumble that Leroy Hill recovered at the Carolina 45. The turnover was converted into a 2 yard TD run by Brown on 3rd and goal, after a 23 yard catch by A.J. Green had made it first and goal at the 5.

The second half began with a Carolina three and out and a Seattle touchdown drive capped by Carson Palmer’s 11 yard pass to Green. With the Seahawks up 27-3, Jake Locker was under center the next time the offense took the field. His first series yielded a 37 yard Mare boot. With 8:24 left in the game, in the series after Marcus Trufant went out with a rib injury, the Kitties got their lone touchdown with an 8 yard pass from Matt Moore to Jeremy Shockey. Leon Washington returned the kickoff to the Carolina 40, and the short field was turned into a 2 yard touchdown run by Justin Forsett for the game’s final points.

L: Ronnie Brown went 77 yards for a score on the game's first play from scrimmage. R: Just a routine catch for A.J. Green.

The 4th quarter opened with Nnamdi Asomugha's end zone
interception.
