Re: Big City Shakeup - Jets CCM (M13)

Week 11

Cardinals@Falcons

The Cardinals (5-4) travel to the Georgia Dome to play the Falcons (6-3), both teams are currently sitting in second place in their respective divisions and only one game behind first. While Michael Turner and the ground game continue to struggle, Matt Ryan and his highly efficient passing attack has been superb so far and will only be helped by the return of #1 reciever; Roddy White from injury. For the Cardinals, John Skelton started red-hot but has been cooling over recent weeks, taking too many sacks and forcing too many errant passes. ‘Matty Ice’ will have to keep an eye out for emerging sophomore rush specialist; Sam Acho from Texas, who has notched 7 sacks so far.

Ravens@Steelers

With the AFC North locked up in a three-way tie (Browns, Ravens and Steelers all at 5-4) every divisional game is crucial, none more so than this matchup between the two flagship defensive powerhouses. Flacco has been making the most out of his two-headed receiving monster; Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin, while Ray Rice has pitched in all over the field. For the Steelers, Roethlisberger has had his ups and downs in Todd Haley’s new offensive schemes and has been greatly helped in recent weeks by running back-by-committee consisting of Mendenhall and Dwyer. Despite talk of both teams’ defences ‘ageing’, the Ravens have had to contend with several injuries while the Steelers’ vocal linebacker; James Harrison has wreaked havoc with 10 sacks so far.

Bears@49ers

The 49ers (4-5) play host to Bears (5-4) this week, in a game which both franchises desperately need a win. One year removed from their 13-3 campaign, the 49ers are sitting in third place in their division, two games behind the Rams, while the Bears are contending with MVP frontrunner; Aaron Rodgers and the Pack. This may be Alex Smith’s last year behind the controls, as he continues to match TD production with interceptions (14 apiece) and with Frank Gore out for the rest of the season, Harbaugh needs to come up with a new recipe for success. With Cutler returning from injury to help ease the tremendous load carried by Matt Forte (1,361 total yards and 14 total TDs), this could spell disaster for the red and gold.

Re: Big City Shakeup - Jets CCM (M13)

Injuries to note:
CB – Darrelle Revis
WR – Chaz Schilens

LE – Chris Long

Analysis:
Both teams enter this game sitting at 6-3 and atop their divisions, but both teams are also sorely pressed by their division rivals. Last week was a mixed bag for the Jets; Tebow had his best game passing on the season, but the Jets’ defence struggled to get off the field and they ultimately lost in Seattle. Their road trip will not get any easier against the Rams, as Bradford will use short routes to keep drives alive, while veteran do-it-all superstar RB; Steven Jackson wears down the front seven. Keep an eye on rookie CB; Janoris Jenkins to make a big play, or two, against fellow former-Gator; Tim Tebow.

Re: Big City Shakeup - Jets CCM (M13)

Disaster in the Dome

(Cromartie and the Jets had plenty to celebrate this weekend)

When both Bradford and Tebow were drafted in the first round of the 2010 draft, they would not have ever imagined playing in a game like this. Tebow only threw ten times for 62 yards and an interception, while being sacked 5 times. And he looked ten times the quarterback that Bradford did. The Jets’ defence obviously took exception to the criticism that they were lambasted with by the New York sports media. The front seven continually played in the Rams’ backfield and levelled any receivers coming over the middle. Then there was the play of Antonio Cromartie who refused to comment to any of the reporters during the week, but gave them a post-game sound bite.

“All week this team has been crucified for one loss. Everyone’s been saying that we couldn’t function without Revis, and while he’s a phenomenal talent and teammate, I think our level of play spoke for itself today. And to Darrelle sitting back on his comfy couch in New York; I think I just threw down the gauntlet.” - Antonio Cromartie, who had three picks and returned two of them for touchdowns.

Re: Big City Shakeup - Jets CCM (M13)

Week 11

Cardinals@Falcons

If someone had said at the start of the season that John Skelton (60%, 385 Yds, 3 TDs, 1 INT) would outplay Matt Ryan (55%, 280 Yds, 3 TDs, 3INTs) then you would have called them crazy, buts that’s what’s great about the NFL. Having Larry Fitzgerald helps too, who went out and caught ten passes for 139 yards and a score, as does a defence that not only forced turnovers but sacked Ryan 3 times as well. Cardinals won it 52-22.

Ravens@Steelers

Big Ben knows when to get hot and how to respond to critics and he did that Sunday; throwing for 309 yards and 4 TDs. Flacco on the other hand struggled to get comfortable in the pocket, missed on nearly half his attempts and was picked off twice. Mike Wallace also showed off his speed, converting 4 catches into 114 yards, averaging 28.5 yards per touch. Steelers won it 31-17.

Bears@49ers

Jay Cutler decided to play like Alex Smith and match TD production with turnovers (3 TDs and 3 INTs), while Smith himself played like a poorer version of what Cutler was doing (1 TD and 1 INT). The 49ers are really struggling to form an identity on offence with emotional leader; Frank Gore on IR. Brandon Marshall was also hard to contain averaging 36.8 yards on 4 receptions and Hester was right behind him with 20.5 yards on 4 receptions. Bears won it 38-14.

Scouting Department

Areas of Focus: OLB, QB, WR, NT, Guard, MLB and Safety.

OLB

Oliver Isaac, West Virginia. (6’3 254lbs): A 3-4 pass-rush specialist with good speed and agility but elite burst. Plays with more finesse than power, but also has the awareness and pursuit to not be a liability against the run. Projected late 1st round.

Frederick Johnson, Washington State. (6’2 240lbs): A good overall 3-4 LB, can shed blocks but doesn’t display and special power or finesse in doing so. Great initial step, good overall strength and fluid speed around the field. Projected early 2nd round.

Kris Scott, Clemson. (6’5 254lbs): Potentially the best overall 3-4 LB in the class, plays downhill with good overall burst, speed and agility. Needs to more of his weight into muscle mass, but displays good balance between power and finesse moves, and easily beats blockers at the point of attack. Solid football smarts and good pursuit. Projected mid-to-late 1st round.

Jean Carmichael, Connecticut. (6’3 250lbs): A very solid 3-4 prospect, displays good overall moves against lineman and able to chase down plays from behind. Needs more work in the weights room to survive against NFL O-lines. Good open field speed and nimble in the trenches, great burst off the snap. Projected mid-3rd round.

Leon Boon, Iowa State. (6’2 242lbs): A fluid 3-4 linebacker. Good mobility and burst around the field and identifies plays quickly on the move. Works well shedding most blocks, but does not display either finesse or power tendencies, rather pure effort. Projected early 2nd round.

Kelvin McGriff, Louisville. (6’3 251lbs): Displays good overall mobility and change of direction around the field. One of the better 3-4 prospects in terms of strength, but needs more work on disengaging blockers as well as the mental components of his game. Can often get lost on a play, but evidence of well-developed and balanced power and finesse moves. Projected mid-to-late 5th round.

QB

Jordan Parks, Michigan State. (6’4 239lbs): Plays in a balanced offence which maximises his polished skills off play action passes, hitting mid-range throws with elite accuracy. Prototypical pocket passer with a rocket arm, who can evade sacks but will not create anything with his legs, either when running or passing on the run. Displays good overall awareness and solid accuracy on both short and deep routes. Projected to go 1st overall.

Michael Belt, Ole Miss. (6’4 232lb): Displays incredible arm strength, but is not tempered with great decision making or accuracy on any level other than the deep ball. Not mobile enough to work outside of the pocket and terrible mechanics on the run. Projected late 2nd round.

Colton Carter, Houston. (6’6 240lbs): Prototypical sized QB with an arm to fall in love with. Comes from a simple one-read spread system and struggles deciphering complex defences. Average accuracy on all levels of the field and cannot move much within or outside the pocket. Projected mid-to-late 2nd round.

WR

Freddie Yates, Virginia Tech. (6’5 230lbs): Comes from a west coast scheme with elite size and speed. Hindered by stiff hips and average route running, however with his height and amazing vertical he creates a mis-match in the endzone everytime. Good overall hands, even in traffic, never gets jammed at the line and has made some incredibly acrobatic catches. Projected top 10.

PJ Taylor, TCU. (6’3 230lbs): Does everything really well. Good overall physical traits, but not elite in any category. Needs a lot of work on his routes but has the awareness to find soft spots in coverage. Projected mid-to-late 1st round.

Louie Wilkins, Arkansas. (5’9 182lbs): Comes from a vertical scheme which showcases his amazing speed and one-step quickness. Can get jammed at the line and knocked off his route easily and does not possess special hands, but good overall field awareness. Projected early 2nd round.

Marquis Wells, Oregon. (5’10 179lbs): Good production out of Oregon’s balanced offence which relies heavily on his amazing speed and mobility. Extremely fluid hips and one of the quickest players off the mark in college. Will not catch everything thrown his way, especially if there’s a contest for the ball, but is a good route runner that doesn’t often get caught up at the line of scrimmage. Projected mid-2nd round.

Jaron Ford, Oklahoma. (6’0 192lbs): Jumps off the line of scrimmage with an great first step and can get behind defences with his deceptive speed. Good hands and vertical, but has not been seen to make any acrobatic catches and struggles in a crowd. Savvy route runner with a good eye for open areas of field. Projected early 3rd round.

NT

Dylan Brown, Alabama. (6’2 337lbs): Prototypical nose tackle with poor mobility and burst but great strength at the point of attack and good awareness of the players around him. Struggles to get off blocks and doesn’t really follow the play outside of the trenches. Projected mid-2nd round.

Sealii Mendenhall, Louisville. (6’5 336lbs): Great size and strength but next to no mobility and very poorly developed power and finesse moves. Can get off some block, but also gets locked up by good linemen. Decent awareness and good at recognising developing plays. Projected mid-3rd round.

Jordan Westover, Wyoming. (6’2 348lbs): Has not produced as expected within his 3-4 scheme. Great strength and size, below average mobility and poorly developed power moves. Needs a lot of work on shedding blocks and building overall field awareness. Decent play recognition. Projected mid-to-late 5th round.

Shannon Givens, Colorado. (6’2 332lbs): Another man mountain that moves like a glacier. Can plug the middle with good size and great strength, but contributes little else to the game. Struggles getting off blocks and has poor awareness of the play when he does. Projected mid-4th round.

DeAndre Rabasa, Boise State. (6’2 330lbs): Another potential NT, but does play in a 4-3 currently, however, does not display the explosiveness or disruptive ability to be a true 4-3 DT. Great strength, but remains his only real tool. Projected late 4th round.

OG

Zachery Wood, Texas State. (6’6 317lbs): Explodes well into his blocks, but can miss assignments in the run game. Strong pass protector, who keeps his head on a swivel when protecting the pocket. Displays good overall strength. Projected late 1st round.

Eric Hill, Clemson. (6’4 315lbs): Good all round blocking technique with great strength. Heavy feet and stiff hips inhibit him from potentially becoming truly elite and can often be lost on plays. Does not react well when presented with unfamiliar packages. Projected mid-to-late 1st round.

Cody Dobson, Texas. (6’6 312lbs): Displays good burst and strength off the snap for a big man. Good run blocker who is aggressive at engagement and can knock opponents back. Needs improvement in his pass protecting, really inhibited by his complete lack of awareness and recognition of defensive schemes. Projected late 5th round.

T.J. Butrico, Michigan. (6’4 316lbs): Butrico displays good strength in Michigan’s balanced offence, but he will not knock defender backwards on impact. Average run blocker who is technically sound but not very aggressive. Too slow to identify the blitz and move his feet to be a good NFL pass protector. Projected mid-to-late 4th round.

Terrance Willis, Kansas. (6’7 336lbs): Amazing size and strength, but extremely new and raw to the offensive line position. Moves into his blocks with good aggression, but poor burst and technique. Currently only an average blocker all-round. Projected late 4th round.

MLB

Jamal Gause, Kentucky. (6’1 250lbs): An absolute thumper in the middle of Kentucky’s 3-4 defence. Good speed and fluidity around the field and displays sound tackling technique. Can diagnose plays quickly and has a good ‘football smarts’. Works his way off blocks with great effort but non-existent moves and struggles playing in coverage. Projected mid-2nd round.

Nate Pettinato, UTEP. (6’2 242lbs): Produces well in UTEP’s 4-3 scheme, but has the size to play in the middle for a 3-4 as well. Great acceleration with good speed and agility, but needs to work more on building his strength to stay effective in the NFL. Good technical tackler, but needs room to move; cannot work off blocks and rarely has the ability or knowledge to recognise plays and get into the back field. Liability in coverage also. Projected early-to-mid 3rd round.

Marquis Ahearn, New Mexico State. (6’2 252lbs): Has had good production in New Mexico State’s 3-4, mainly due to his above average speed and quick initial step. Plays the run well with good strength, solid technique and knows how to lower his pads and drive through tackles. Displays average ability at diagnosing plays and can sometimes get caught out of position. Liability in coverage. Projected mid-3rd round.

Devin Brown, Alabama. 96’3 255lbs): Plays an integral role in Alabama’s aggressive 3-4, but has not produced well this year due to an outstanding supporting cast. While he hasn’t got the greatest acceleration, Brown does display a good, rangy speed and fluid hips when hitting the hole. Like all recent players of Saban’s regime, he has good tackling technique and delivers his hits forcefully. Biggest downside is the mental side of his game, often seems oblivious of the play around him. Projected early-to-mid 7th round.

Safety

Angel Burden, Michigan. (6’1 204lbs): Great speed and agility across the park have helped Burden produce remarkable plays in Michigan’s attacking 4-3 this year. He has also shown good vertical and a good initial burst, but struggles when placed in man-to-man. His zone coverage skills are raw and his diagnosis of plays needs further development, often gets lost when a play breaks down. Projected early 2nd round.

Demetrius Browning, Temple. (5’11 206lbs): Uses his above average physical skills to make a decent amount of plays in Temple’s 3-4, but cannot be relied on to make critical tackles when supporting the run game. While his zone coverage skills are better than his man-to-man skills, he still needs further development. Will also need to spend more time in the film room with coaches at the next level. Projected mid-4th round.

Salim Foster, Georgia. (6’0 219): While Foster has great size for a FS, he has not produced as people expected out of Georgia’s complex defensive scheme. He has amazing measurables, with great speed and burst around the open field. Has obviously has spent some time in the weights room, however doesn’t seem to spend anytime breaking down film, relies solely on his physical skills with next-to-no mental preparation. Loves to deliver the big hit, but more often than not misdiagnoses the play. Projected early 6th round.

Re: Big City Shakeup - Jets CCM (M13)

Week 12

Steelers@Browns

Both the Steelers and Browns are currently sitting atop the AFC North with identical 6-4 records. The similarities end there however, as they are currently trending in opposite directions. The Browns began the year on fire with offseason acquisition QB; David Garrad igniting the offence with plenty of assistance from their first round tailback; Trent Richardson. But in recent weeks Richardson has been hemmed in and Garrad has been ineffectual. Compared to the Steelers that struggled to adjust to their new dink’n’dunk offense early on, but with amazing defensive inspiration, mainly from Harrision, they are starting to get their season back on track.

Rams@Cardinals

Another highlighted divisional matchup where both participants share 6-4 records and sit atop their division. Bradford had a major setback against the Jets last week throwing six picks and it won’t be any easier against a Cardinals team that does a good job of getting into the offence’s backfield. The Rams’ defensive line duo of Kendall Langford and Robert Quinn (combined 10 sacks) will need to disrupt the connection between John Skelton and Larry Fitzgerald in order for the Rams to have a chance.

Panthers@Eagles

After starting the season 6-0, the Panthers have stumbled in the last four weeks going 1-3. Meanwhile the Eagles enter this matchup on a three game winning streak and sit atop the NFC East. Cam Newton and Isaac Redman will need to revive their early season magic in order to stand any chance against the high octane offence of Philly. Michael Vick would also greatly benefit from a more productive ground game as McCoy is only currently averaging just over 60 yards per game at the moment.

Re: Big City Shakeup - Jets CCM (M13)

Injuries to note:
MLB – David Harris
WR – Chaz Schilens

LOLB – Dont’a Hightower
RE – Luis Catillo
WR – Ted Ginn

Analysis:
The Jets return to New York after an emphatic victory against St. Louis to host the Patriots who suffered a close loss to the Colts. Currently in the AFC East the Jets hold a one game lead over the Patriots for the top spot. The first matchup of these two teams earlier in the season saw a wild game in Foxborough that Brady and the Pats were able to win. Aiding the Jets is the return from injury of shut down corner; Darrelle Revis, who should be able to help cover the multitude of receivers that Bardy has used so far this season. A big emphasis will have to be placed on Gronkowski, who has still failed to emerge as a legitimate target in New England’s passing attack, but could really hurt the Jets over the middle with their best linebacker; David Harris, out this week. A critical game for both franchises as the season begins to move closer towards the playoffs.

Re: Big City Shakeup - Jets CCM (M13)

Primetime on Turkey Day at MetLife doesn’t Disappoint

(The Jets gave and received plenty of thanks on Friday night)

Never before has it been more obvious that football is a game of inches than it was on Friday night. A Nick Folk field goal that was blown inches off course to rebound off the upright. A Steven Ridley run that was inches from being a crucial third down conversion. A Tebow pass completion that was inches (and mere milliseconds) from being a sack. A Brandon Lloyd fumble when his knee was less than an inch from the ground. In a crucial divisional matchup during primetime on Thanksgiving day, the inches were everywhere. Despite absolutely dominating the time of possession and running the Patriot’s defence into the ground and onto the oxygen machines, the Jets’ allowed Brady to get back within a touchdown in the dying minutes, as the Patriots abandoned the run game and let Tomreffic to his thing. After recovering a second onside kick, the stage was set for an amazing , storybook comeback, but Coach Mitchell called an audacious cornerback blitz which levelled Brady and allowed time to get desperately low. With no other option New England went to the hail mary, but as he had already done once, Cromartie out-leapt the Patriots receivers from an advantageous position to secure his 11th interception of the season and allow Tebow to kneel out the clock.
