Re: Whatever Happened to the Patriot Way - A Madden NFL 25 New England Patriots CFM

Part V of V: You Play to Win the Game
Two playoff spots are off the board in the NFC with the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers clinching a playoff berth with wins last week. The leaves only four spots for the remaining eligible teams in that conference. Meanwhile, the AFC still looks wide open. With not much if any separation between the teams, the last few weeks could be very interesting in the AFC.

Statistically, the Baltimore Ravens look like they should be able to go into FirstEnergy Field Stadium and beat the Cleveland Browns. Going off statistics, the Ravens should have a better record. The Ravens will have to deal with where they are right now when they take on the division leading Browns. The Browns don't look like much of a threat with their 30th ranked offense, but they have managed to win 8 games this season. Another win would get the Browns closer to that playoff spot that has alluded them for the last few seasons.

An 8-8 record got Gary Kubiak fired last season and the Houston Texans missed the playoffs. The turnaround that the Texans have seen has fans ecstatic in Houston. For the Baltimore Ravens, another troubling season after their Super Bowl victory in 2012 has the city feeling the opposite. Like many teams in the Ravens' position, there is still a chance. With the stakes so high at this point in the season, the only thing that matters is who wants it more.

New England Patriots Scouting Report

Instead of narrowing their focus over the recent weeks, it seems like the scouts for the New England Patriots have found more players to scout. Although players like Robin Garcia have caught their interest, Jamie McLaurin still stands out as a quarterback that fits what the Patriots are looking for. Keyon Bates is still an interesting prospect as well that has a strong arm and good accuracy to go along with his scrambling ability. The only concern with Bates is his size and whether he would be able to stay healthy in the league.

Re: Whatever Happened to the Patriot Way - A Madden NFL 25 New England Patriots CFM

While he may not be the feared pass rusher that he was, Justin Tuck is still very productive. That production has earned him a contract extension with the New York Giants. Colin Kaepernick's production has improved, but it appears the young quarterback would like to continue his growth elsewhere. Now that he's turned down a contract extension from the San Francisco 49ers, it looks like he could be a free agent. The only hope the 49ers have of holding on to Kaepernick is to put the franchise tag on him. If the 49ers don't go that rout, Kaepernick will join Dez Bryant and Sean Lee as the big names free agents hitting the market when the 2015 offseason comes.

The Philadelphia Eagles get some good news this week with guard Evan Mathis being cleared to play. The Eagles offensive line has been in a constant state of flux because of injuries. With Mathis having missed earlier in the season because of an injury, the Eagles are hoping that he is back for good.

Media Reaction
Skip Bayless - @SkipBaylessEA: Not shocked that Colin Kaepernick doesn't want to re-sign with the 49ers. I heard the offers they made were not great.
Adam Schefter - @AdamSchefterEA: Looks like offseason free agency got a lot more interesting now that Radall Cobb has made it clear that he is not re-signing with the Packers.
Trey Wingo - @WingozEA: So.. who gets Roddy White in free agency this year?
Adam Schefter - @AdamSchefterEA: Justin Tuck staying with the Giants gives them much-needed help at left defensive end.
Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: Rams will have Robert Quinn back this week.
Mark Schlereth - @MarkSchlerethEA: Raiders will have one less active roster spot to fill with Andre Roberts returning this week.

Game Notes
When these two teams played each other last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers won a lopsided game 31-7 in Heinz Field. In that game Tom Brady threw a career high 6 interceptions. While the Steelers don't have the same defense they had last year, Brady is still dealing with an interception issue, throwing 20 so far this year. With the Steelers' 26th ranked defense, they'll have some issue dealing with the Patriots' 1st ranked offense. With the game favoring the visiting Patriots, the Steelers will have to hope that home field will be enough to get the win.

For the second game in a row, turnovers and poor play on defense led to the downfall of the New England Patriots. It just so happened that this was also the second of back-to-back road games for the team. Last season, the Patriots went 4-4 on the road and it appears that their issues on the road have followed them into this season.

Just like last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Pittsburgh Steelers scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. Le'Veon Bell was the star of the game early on, scoring a touchdown through the air and on the ground. While the Steelers offense flourished early, the Patriots offense was stagnant. Not only was the offense unimpressive, the defense was as well.

While Le'Veon Bell didn't have a great day on the ground, he was a big part of the Steelers offense with a receiving and rushing touchdown.

The Patriots looked like they were beginning to find their rhythm in the second and third quarter. While they weren't able to keep the Steelers' passing attack in check, the Patriots held the Steelers to mostly field goals. An all too familiar problem showed up that prevented the Patriots from taking full advantage of their opportunities, interceptions. Interceptions in the redzone have been a huge issue for the Patriots all season long and they were part of the Patriots troubles in the game.

The New England Patriots players began to play better in the second quarter with Vince Wilfork recording a sack and Aaron Dobson on the receiving end of a 74-yard touchdown catch and run.

The Patriots were able to bring themselves within six points of the Steelers, but that was as close as they would get. The aforementioned turnovers helped the Steelers maintain their lead, despite only getting into the endzone just one time in the second half. Unlike their game against the Eagles, the Patriots played well against the run. The only problem is they had no answers for Pittsburgh's passing attack. In the end, the Patriots put themselves in too big of a hole and made too many mistakes to comeback in the game.

While the Patriots got more pressure on Ben Roethlisberger, they were unable to bring him down.

The Patriots haven't chosen the best time of the season to go on a losing streak. With the AFC playoff race looking more cluttered than it did just a few weeks ago, their playoff chances can quickly disappear. Not only do the Patriots have to be concerned about winning in the playoffs, they have to also be concerned with whether or not they'll even make the playoffs. Games like these don't leave much confidence in the Patriots' ability to win against playoff contending teams or on the road. A home game against the 5-8 Indianapolis Colts on Sunday should provide the remedy for the Patriots recent ills.

Game Ball/Extra Reps

Game Ball:
Jamie Collins/ Jelani Gibbs: Both Collins and Gibbs are all over the ball carrier recording 9 and 8 total tackles respectively.
Aaron Dobson: Even though Tom Brady struggles during the game, Dobson made huge plays, including his 74-yard touchdown reception.
Run Defense: The Patriots hold Le'Veon Bell to 59 yards on 22 carries.

Extra Reps:
Pass Defense: New England's pass defense allows Ben Roethlisberger to throw for 463 yards and complete 82% of his passes.
Offensive Line: The offensive line allows Brady to be sacked 7 times in the game.
Rushing Offense: The Patriots are only able to muster 64 yards on the ground against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Media Reaction
Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: You're watching greatness on that field with T. Brady. He;s just so in control of every little element. #recordwatch
Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: The Steelers' 6th ranked offense pulls off the win vs. the Patriots.
