Falcons Gameday Preview: Week 9

InfoCision Stadium in Akron, home of the Zips

The MAC East is still wide open, and despite the ugly loss last week, the Falcons can still win it. A key win on the road against a very good Akron team would help them get closer to that point, as well as rebuild the confidence of this Falcons team. Certainly, the defense must play better for the Falcons to be able to win this one. They must be able to force turnovers when they need to, which they have had a hard time doing this season.

Re: Bowling for the Green - A Bowling Green Falcons Story

Special Feature: An inside look at Bowling Green's Practices

It is safe to say that Coach Freday is angry after last week's lost to Kent State. "That game was the first one as a coach that I really thought we couldn't lose. We had played so well the week before, and had the best home crowd we'd had in 10 years at the Doyt. Something needs to be done fast."
When we asked for an inside look on how Coach prepared for the pivotal game against Akron, that could make or break the Falcons' season, we were stunned when he accepted. Here's what the week look like:

Sunday:
After graciously letting his players sleep in, Coach called in his team to the film room at about 1 PM. He sat down, said nothing, and played the entire game tape. Out of fear for retribution, the whole team sat there and watched themselves, the good, the offense, the bad, the tackling ability of the defense, and the ugly, the run defense. When it was over, Freday and his assistants quickly and quietly got up and left. Then, the team captains stepped up. On offense, Matt Johnson, Anthon Samuel, and Chris Gallon. On defense, Jude Adjei Barimah, Gabe Martin, and DJ Lynch. They each addressed the rest of the team calling for offense and defense team meetings. The offense met in the locker room, the defense in the study with a window overlooking the endzone of the field. Adjei Barimah and Martin told everyone that no one was to blame, but also that no one was innocent. Everyone needed to pick it up. Everyone needed to be in perfect shape. Everyone needed to get past their blocks, not just Adjei Barimah and Lynch, the tackles leaders, or Martin, the sacks leader. Most importantly, everyone needed to stick together. DJ Lynch talked specifically about the feel of last season, the chemistry in the locker room, the fun they had on the field, and explained how different that felt this season, especially in the last couple weeks. Martin closed by telling the underclassmen to never stop working hard to get better, because soon, they would be the faces of Bowling Green State University football. The meeting then proceeded to adjourn, and the players went back to their dorms to self-reflect.

Monday:
Coach Freday woke up everybody bright and early at 5:30 AM and announced that for the next three days, there would be two-a-day practices, at 6 AM and 4 PM. Everyone scrambled to get down to the field, where they were met by a driving rainstorm and temperatures in the 40's. First drill of the day: Holding onto the football. Offensive role players had to hold onto the football while doing full 100 yard suicides. Defensive players had to catch balls, making interceptions, or run suicides with the offensive players. Practice concluded with work on onside kicks, an important skill that could help save some of these Falcons' close losses. The afternoon practice consisted of relative normalcy. Each side of the ball went through walk throughs of basic sets and formations, trying to start over from scratch.

Tuesday:
This morning, the players were ravaged by sub-freezing temperatures when they reported to the field at 6 AM. Coach Freday spent the whole morning scrimmaging, putting the first team offense against the first team defense, trying to work on stopping the running game, since the Falcons' running game is very strong, led by Anthon Samuel, Andre Givens, and the option play of Matt Johnson. He was disappointed by the results, to say the least. The afternoon session consisted of more running drills, followed by work with the defensive line, to try to consistently get more pressure on opposing QB's.

Wednesday:
The 6 AM session began with work on the passing game, as well as zone defense. Matt Johnson admitted during the offensive team meeting that he hadn't been playing up to his full potential, and Coach Freday seemed to already knowing this, despite not knowing about the meeting. His offensive coordinator and QB coach made sure he was aware of checkdowns on all of the passing plays, and knew when it was appropriate to scramble for extra yards, and when it was appropriate to throw the ball away. The defense meanwhile was making sure they were communicating in zone formats, making sure all areas were covered, and making sure the defensive backs were quick enough to recover even if they got beat. Coach Freday noted that there was a whole lot of progress. He said that a strong zone defense would complement well with an already strong man defense. He was so excited by what he saw, than in the afternoon session, he worked exclusively on special teams, trying to get the most out of the leg of his RS-Jr. kicker Tyler Tate, who has significantly limited range, which has cost the Falcons a significant amount of points so far this season. Coach Freday wrapped up the day by working more on onside kicks, never knowing when they might come in handy.

Thursday:
The first hour of practice was spent watching the film of the Akron-Ball State game, a 23-17 win for Ball State. Coach Freday noted how well the Akron defense played, despite losing, led by a large number of upperclassmen. When the game was over, they took this new found knowledge out to the field, where they emulated the strengths, and weaknesses, of Akron's offense and defense to evaluate how Bowling Green matched up. Coach Freday ended practice 30 minutes early, and with no second practice, the players felt rejuvenated and full of confidence.

Friday:

The team met at 2 PM to do a light walk through while hard pump up rap blared over the speakers. At 3:30 everyone loaded their stuff onto the bus, and said goodbye to Doyt Perry Stadium and the rest of the campus of Bowling Green State University, and headed north to Akron. At 6:30 PM, the bus arrived, and after a team meal at Akron's finest restaurant, where they ran into LeBron James, they checked into their hotel to get ready for the big game on Saturday.

Gameday Recap: Bowling Green 49, Akron 17
Offense cruises, defense steps up, leads to a Falcons blowout

Ryan Burbrink has to leap to pull in his 3 TD catch of the day midway through the 3rd quarter.

From start to finish, The Falcons played what appeared to be a perfect game. Everything was working. The offense was in sync, and the defense was on fire, getting to Zips QB Dalton Easton 9 times, and causing him to fumble twice. A costly fumble by Anthon Samuel did lead to good field position for the Zips, but the Falcons defense made sure they wouldn't score. It was an all around good day.

Re: Bowling for the Green - A Bowling Green Falcons Story

Breaking News: Coach Freday Suffers Fractured Wrist

In what is turning out to be a very bizarre story, Bowling Green State University announced today the Head Football Coach Sam Freday fractured his wrist during a recruiting trip to Texas. All details are not yet known, but it can be gathered that Freday suffered the injury arriving at the airport for his flight back to Ohio, when apparently, he was shoved aside by two muscular TSA agents responding to a report of suspicious activity. Freday was transported to a local hospital where he received the necessary treatment, and was then put on a private flight, and arrived back home at 6 PM local time on Sunday. It is unclear whether he will coach Saturday's game at B-Dawg's Western Michigan Broncos, but we will update you on the situation in the coming days.

I hope you know that this is a metaphor for me actually being hurt. It is not a fractured wrist, but it is really messed up. I'm not sure when I will be able to play my next game, which I may record and upload since it against B-Dawg's WMU team, but it will probably be either next Friday or next weekend. I'll try to get Around the NCAA and the WMU Game Preview up on Tuesday or Wednesday, with maybe another special feature on Thursday, but I really have no idea and will just see how this whole thing plays out. I'm wearing medical tape that makes me look like a quarterback, so I can't hold the controller very well.

The plot thickens! Seriously though, that's rough man...hope it's nothing too serious. Some guys get hurt and can't play for real...but to take away a man's ability to play the sticks? That's just cruel.
