Patriots Squeak By Dolphins to Stay #1 in AFC
The Patriots could have loss their current #1 seed in the AFC to the Jacksonville Jaguars who are now 6-2. Fortunately, they didn't lose their division rival Miami Dolphins in Gillette Stadium and get to stay number one in the league.
Both teams traded field goals in the first half, with the score 6-3 Miami at the second period. The first touchdown would come in the winding seconds of the half with
Tom Brady finding
Danny Amendola for a one-yard touchdown, ending the first half with the Patriots leading 10-6.
The Dolphins would take the lead at the top of the third period when the game's rushing leader
Daniel Thomas put up a two-yard touchdown: Miami up 13-10. When the Patriots got the ball back, Tom Brady would be picked off by
Rashad Jones. The Dolphins would tack on another field goal, 16-10. But Brady would strike back with a 75 yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski, putting New England up by one.
Matt Moore, playing for the injured
Ryan Tannehill, would be unable to follow suit and would be picked off by Tommy Kelly on a tipped pass. The Patriots would try to extend the lead, but
Stephen Gostkowski missed the 49 yard field goal. Miami would stall on their next drive, as would New England. With 1:01 left on the clock and only one timeout, Matt Moore attempted to bring back the Dolphins, but would ultimately fail on fourth down. New England would escape with the win, and Miami dropped to 4-3. Patriots win
17-16.
