Vols Lose Heartbreaker To The Ducks
Even though two of the Ducks star players, DeAnthony Thomas and Marcus Mariota, who are both injured and were not active for the game, but the #7 Oregon Ducks (3-0) still came out with the win over the Tennessee Volunteers (2-1)... But, it was much closer than many may think... Oregon squeaked out a 48-41 win in overtime on its home field against the Vols.
1st Quarter Scoring:
For every score Oregon had, Tennessee would match it. On the 2nd play of the game Rodrigues hit Keanon Lowe on a 45 yard post route over the middle of the field for a TD to take the early 7-0 lead. Then, with 1:09 left in the quarter Marlin Lane ran in for a 4 yard TD run to tie it up at 7-7.
2nd Quarter Scoring:
With 5:03 left in the quarter Rodrigues threw a perfectly thrown ball to Josh Huff, in between two Vols defenders, for a 20 yard TD which made it 14-7 Oregon. With 3:35 left in the quarter the Vols matched it when Senior RB Rajion Neal had a 5 yard TD run. Then, with 0:53 left in the half Oregon's Sophomore RB Byron Marshall had a 3 yard TD run right up the middle. So, at the half Oregon led 21-14.
3rd Quarter Scoring:
The Vols got the ball after the half and took full advantage of it. With 5:50 left in the 3rd quarter Justin Worley threw a 7 yard TD pass to Cody Blanc to tie the game at 21. Oregon then responded with a 42 yard field goal to make it 24-21. Then, the Vols took their first lead of the game when Justin Worley hit Devrin Young on an out route to the right corner of the endzone... BUT, here is where it gets interesting... Michael Palardy missed the extra point and it was now a 27-24 Tennessee lead. And of course, Oregon responds right back with a touchdown of their own as former 5* RB Thomas Tyner had a 2 yard TD run making it 31-27 Oregon.
4th Quarter Scoring:
After a Rajion Neal fumble, Oregon took advantage of it and with 4:08 left in the quarter Byron Marshall had another 3 yard TD run to make it 38-27 Oregon. Tennessee answered right back as Rajion Neal had a 1 yard TD run up the middle to make it a 38-34 Oregon lead. Oregon responded with another field goal, but this time from 46 yards out which made it 41-34. Finally, with 0:43 left in the 4th quarter Justin Worley hits Devrin Young on a screen to the right side where he then runs it in 10 yards for the score tying it up at 41!
OVERTIME:
It took Oregon only 3 plays to get in the endzone as Byron Marshall runs into the endzone from 2 yards out to make it his 3rd rushing TD of the game and that makes it a 48-41 Oregon lead. Neal gets stuffed on 1st down, Worley throws it away on 2nd down, and on 3rd down the play gets broken up by none other than Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. On 4th down Worley drops back to pass but after finding no one open he ends up getting sacked by Oregon DE Tony Washington to end the game and Oregon wins a close one 48-41 in Eugene.
Butch Jones Post-Game Press Conference Quotes:
"I'm extremely proud of our guys today for hanging in with a top 10 team in a very hostile environment," said head coach Butch Jones. "They came out and fought exactly how we wanted them to. I don't think we could've asked for a better game offensively, but defensively our weaknesses were exposed and we've got to work on them to get to the level where we want to be."
"I was impressed with the effort on defense, they never gave up, never stopped fighting," said Jones. "Cam Sutton was one individual who I was really impressed with. He got in there and broke up a few passes, and made it took for #1 to really do much offensively. Even on the play that he gave up a TD he played great coverage on him, I think he'll really be a good player soon."
"Our defensive line has to get more physical. The effort was there today, they never gave up, and I'm proud of them for that," Jones said. "But, their running back's had such an easy time near the goal line running the ball in. So, in practice come Monday, we're going to have to have the offense vs. defense on the goal line. That's the only way we'll get better. "
"All in all, I'm proud of the guys, but we can't let this loss come to our head since we've got to go on the road to yet another hostile environment next week with Florida... And they're also ranked in the top 25 so we'll see how our guys adjust to this type of environment in a big, conference game." said Jones as the post game press conference came to an end.
Next Weeks Matchup Preview:
Tennessee Vols (2-1) vs. #14 Florida Gators (1-1)
Tennessee (2-1, 0-0 SEC) hasn't defeated Florida (1-1, 0-0) since a 30-28 victory at Neyland Stadium in 2004. The Vols also have lost their last 17 games against ranked opponents and are 1-23 versus Top 25 teams since 2008.
Both teams are currently coming off of losses. Tennessee lost to #7 Oregon 41-48 in overtime and the #10 Gators lost to the #24 Miami Hurricanes 26-35
"Our players understand the rivalry, what is at stake," Tennessee coach Butch Jones said. "I think they understand what has gone on before them. The only thing we can control is our preparation and how we play on Saturday."
Tennessee hasn't come particularly close to ending the streak recently. The Gators squeaked past the Vols 21-20 in their 2006 national championship season, but the last six Florida-Tennessee games had an average margin of 19 points, with each of them being decided by double digits.
Tennessee, a 17-point underdog, knows it must play its best to have a shot at ending the streak. During a team meeting Sunday, Tennessee's upperclassmen emphasized the importance of this rivalry and the necessity to avoid dwelling on the loss to Oregon.
Kick off for the game is at 3:30 local time in Gainesville, FL.
PREDICTION: Florida wins 31-14.

Butch Jones Post-Game Press Conference Quotes:
"First off, I just want to say congratulations to the Florida Gators. They played a great game and were a very tough opponent. But, I was impressed with the mental toughness of our team. It really showed in the second half when we really did a great job of tuning out the crowd and really focusing on our gameplan. I saw a different team in the 2nd half and I saw a lot of progress being made. Not only did we keep our composure in the 2nd half, but we also outscored them. I'm really excited to see if we can keep up this momentum for the rest of the year now because we made huge strides today."
"One thing that I was encouraged by was our secondary play. Their QB had 18 completions on 43 attempts which is less than 50% which is where we strive to get to every week. And in a game this big, and playing against a very good team like Florida, I'd say it's a great accomplishment that we were able to achieve this goal."
"Our return game I'd say is one of the best in the country. That's two kick off returns for touchdowns in the past 3 weeks. Pig and Devrin are doing a fantastic job back there. And now I'm just waiting for them to take a punt back for a touchdown cause they're obviously capable of doing it."
"I think Justin is doing a good job right now at QB. He's making the right reads most of the time, delivering the ball where it needs to be, and distributing the ball among our receivers. He's improved a lot since this off-season and I'm really proud of him for that. I can't wait to see what he'll do the rest of the season as he continues to develop into an even better QB."
"Right now, I think we have to forget about this game and focus 110% on South Alabama next week and regain that confidence that we had after the first two games of the season when we played absolutely fantastic football."
Even with the rather slow start for the Vols (2-2) head coach Butch Jones has the Vols sitting in a great position for a number of highly touted recruits. This weekend for the South Alabama game, the Vols will be hosting 10 high profile recruits that could all potentially be game changers down the road. They are hosting one 5 star recruit, eight 4 star recruits, and one 3 star recruit who is rated as the #1 JUCO TE in the nation.
Butch Jones has a great chance to get the 2014 class rolling this weekend.
5 Players Most Likely To Commit On Visit:
4* DT Robert Williams
4* MLB Braylon Lacey
4* CB Terrance Sanders
4* T Tim Turner
3* TE Brian Jones
Year 1 (2013) Review:
I decided to go ahead and sim the rest of Year 1 because of my work schedule the next week or so I'm not sure how often I'll be able to play and post updates. But, I was rather surprised when I saw the results I got after simming because they were pretty realistic (record wise at least... not so sure about score wise). So, this post will basically be me summing up everything that happened in Year 1.
So, I was fairly impressed that Tennessee was able to get to a bowl game... even though we got destroyed. But, I'm extremely excited about Year 2 (2014) because of the talent coming back and the incoming 2014 recruiting class I have so far. Out of 25 available scholarships, I have 21 targets and 14 total commitments. So, here is the list of current commitments.

Transfer To Tennessee:
Carlos Watkins- 84 overall Sophomore DT from Clemson
Butch Jones brought in Tennessee's highest rated recruiting class since the Fulmer era Wednesday. Tennessee's 2014 recruiting class was ranked 7th in the nation and 3rd in the SEC by ESPN. According to ESPN, the Vols signed 10 4* players, 8 3* players, and 1 2* player.
"I'm very proud of the job our staff did with this recruiting class. In my mind, today the Tennessee Vols signed the #1 class in the country today and I truly believe it will show on the field." said Butch Jones during his signing day press conference.
"I believe that Tennessee signed the best class today," said ESPN's Tom Luginbill. "I think they really got some steals with Tyrone Franklin, Jason Roberson, Andy McBride, and Carlos Golden. All of them are guys I've really been impressed with and am surprised they're not rated higher than what they currently are. Butch Jones will get the Vols back to a football powerhouse soon."
