Game Notes

Score: 30-26

Texas Tech Keys to the Game:

Stop the Run: Last year the Miners stayed in the game behind Aaron Jones running all over the Raider defense, causing Tech fans to worry about a game that should've been a blowout. The Raiders have to shut down the run and get their defense back on track.

Execute in the Red Zone: Another thing that hurt the Raiders was the inability to get TDs in the red zone, having to settle for more FGs than they should've. They need to put the ball in the end zone and get this game over before halftime.

Red Raiders Rebound

The Red Raiders looked to continue off of what they nearly accomplished against #2 (now #1) TCU 2 weeks prior. They actually picked up exactly where they left off, getting stuffed at the 1 Yd line twice on their first drive and turning the ball over on downs. The Miners would take the ball and thanks to a big 40 Yd run by Jones, take a 3-0 lead on the Red Raiders when K Jay Mattox knocked a 37 Yd FG through. The Red Raider offense wouldn't do anything to help themselves out with Mahomes and Lauderdale having a miscommunication and Mahomes threw a go route instead of a flag and gave the ball right back to the Miners. The Miners added to their lead just after the start of the second quarter, when Mattox caught a lucky bounce off the upright to nail a 56 Yd FG and make it 6-0. On the first play after the kickoff, DeAndre Washington took a sweep play 80 Yds to the house and the Raiders took a 7-6 lead. After the Raider defense forced a Miner punt, The offense drove down the field, aided by a diving catch by Jakeem Grant that ended up injuring him. The next play Washington was drilled for a loss and he had to leave the game to. On the next play, Mahomes tried to throw across field and it was jumped by CB Ishmael Harrison, who took it 82 Yds for a TD. The Miners had the lead back at 13-7. The lead didn't last very long though, as Mahomes completed a pass to Lauderdale and the Red Raiders had the lead back. The Miners were determined to keep the game close though as Mattox hit his 3rd FG of the first half to make it 16-14. Some late half heroics helped Tech march down the field and score on a 10 Yd pass from Mahomes to Reginald Davis and Tech had a 21-16 lead at halftime.

Grant makes a diving catch in the 2nd

UTEP received the second half kickoff and ran the ball with Aaron Jones right down the Raiders' throat and ended the drive with a Jones 2 Yd run and the Raiders were once again in a hole after a failed 2 point conversion, 22-21. The Mahomes-Lauderdale connection still burned the UTEP defense though, as they connected on a 20 Yd pass and gave the Red Raiders the lead for good. Tech would go on to outscore the Miners 16-3 and the Red Raiders would win and improve to 3-1.

CB La'Darius Newbold blitzes for sack that resulted in a safety.

EDIT: Just realized there is an error with the update, UTEP QB threw for 151 and 0 TDs, forgot to switch the stats.

I honestly feel like we came out flat, should have probably put the game away earlier but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot.

Thanks for following!

Sorry I've been dormant in the thread, but I hear you 100%. I'll need to take some time off for the exact same thing probably starting this weekend. 1 1/2 weeks and counting!

Everything looks very good so far, keep it up.
