PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
SKINS LOSE DOCTSON FOR SEASON, 2017 OTA’s AND CAMP
Last year it was Chicago’s Kevin White. This year it’s Washington’s Josh Doctson who will have to wait until his sophomore campaign for the opportunity to prove he’s a receiver worthy of a first round pick. Doctson made 3 catches for 54 yards before succumbing to a torn Achilles. The early best-case progonosis is that Doctson could be ready for opening day 2017, but that is only a preliminary assessment. With Doctson out of action, Jamison Crowder stepped up to grab 9 balls for 145 yards and 2 TD’s in the Skins’ 41-38 Monday night loss to Pittsburgh. Five other receivers had 9 catches this weekend, but none of them reached even 100 yards. To address the loss of Doctson, the Redskins have poached Keyarris Garrett off of Carolina’s practice squad. Garrett, a rookie out of Tulsa, is a big-bodied 6‘-4“, 210 lbs. and was widely considered one of the top UDFA receivers in the class of 2016, but his camp performance was below expectations.
Long-Term Carr Parking
At first blush the Saints’ 35-7 rout of the Raiders looked like a shocker, but a lot of that outcome has to do with Oakland signal-caller Derek Carr dislocating his throwing elbow before making his third completion. Although regarded as a capable backup, Matt McGloin struggled mightily, completing only 10 of 23 attempts for 93 yards with a pick and no TD’s. Carr is expected to be sidelined for over a month, during which time rookie Connor Cook may get a look if McGloin’s difficulties persist. Either way, what many thought could be a breakout season for the Silver & Black may already be circling the bowl.
Injury Ends Michael’s Comeback Player Bid
One of the feel-good stories of training camp was Seattle’s Christine Michael. A series of outstanding performances led to speculation for a greater role for Michael in Seattle’s running attack, particularly while Thomas Rawls was something less than 100%. There were even mentions of Michael being a Comeback Player of the Year candidate depending on his load-sharing with Rawls. But mustn’t one have once been good to be a comeback player? Moot point now- Michael fractured a kneecap on his second carry and is done for 2016.
Now Serving Number 3
Jeremy Langford’s rookie season went well enough for the Bears to consider Matt Forte expendable. Well, Langford lasted only 11 carries (on which he gained only 23 yards) into Chicago’s 27-7 drubbing at the hands of the Texans, breaking his hand on the 11th. The good news is the doc thinks the cast can come off after only a month. Ka’Deem Carey’s got next, and it “only” took him 8 carries to reach that same 23 yard mark. TBQH, it didn’t help Chicago’s running game that Jay Cutler was completing only 54% of his passes with zero tubs and 2 picks.
Is Marcus Mariota Durable Enough For The NFL?
Maybe he’s just snake-bit, but it will be at least 2017 before the second overall pick of 2015 makes 16 starts for the Tennessee Titans. A knee injury cut short Marcus Mariota’s rookie season, and this year he didn’t even survive opening day. After going 8-for-12, Mariota exited Tennessee’s game against the Minnesota Vikings with a broken arm, leaving the contest a battle of backups in which Matt Cassel bested Shaun Hill. Whether Mariota is going to have a glass-bodied career is a legitimate concern for the Titans, who already had too much familiarity with an injury-riddled first-rounder under center.
It Wasn’t “Only Preseason”
The Cowboys might have lost to the G-Men, but an injured Tony Romo can’t be pointed to as the reason why. Dak Prescott’s preseason sizzle carried over into a game that mattered as the rookie went 27-of-39 for 291 yards and TD for a rating of 99.4. Just retire already, Romo.
Dose Jags Doe
Some peeps’ dark horse pick to win the AFC South could be fo real. Blake Bortles posted a higher completion percentage (75%-56%) and QB rating (110.1-103.0) than the daable-check guy and Chris Ivory outran Eddie Lacy (94 yards to 62) as the Jaguars spanked the Pack at Lambeau. An auspicious start for a season in which many expect Gus’ gang to turn the corner.
Century-Markers
Three running backs eclipsed the 100-yard mark in opening action- Ameer Abdullah (115), Frank Gore (114) and Doug Martin (102). With longs of 9 yards each, Gore and Martin took the workmanlike approach, while Abdullah generated his output on only ten totes thanks to a 75 yard TD.
A TD For Every Quarter
Russell Wilson and Alex Smith led touchdown-throwers with 4 apiece. A more dubious nod goes to the most-picked QB’s of Week 1, Philip Rivers and Tom Brady stand-in Jimmy Garoppolo (3). Eli Manning had the longest TD of the weekend, 89 yards to rookie Roger Lewis.
Multi-Sackers
Four players recorded 2 or more sacks in opening action, led by the 3.5 of Dallas’ Jack Crawford. Ziggy Ansah had 2 and a half, while JPP and that Watt guy each had a pair.
Other Misc. Stat Notes
Houston safety Andre Hal was the only player with more than one INT (2), while there were no special teams TD’s or blocked kicks.
