Euegene, OR - If only the second half counted, #20 California (2-2, 0-1) would be 1-0 in conference play and celebrating a huge upset victory over the #3 team in the land. Instead, they go home with a 42-35 defeat suffered at the hands of #3 Oregon (4-0, 1-0), who kept their undefeated season alive with a big win today at home against Cal.
Oregon got off to a blazing fast start, forcing a three-and-out on Cal's first possession and went on to score 28 unanswered points in the first and second quarter before Jared Goff connected with Chris Harper for Cal's first score of the day with 4:41 remaining in the half to cut the Oregon lead to 28-7. Oregon would go on to lead 35-14 at halftime.
Cal righted the ship in the second half, and outscored Oregon 21-7 (although one of Cal's touchdowns came with just 29 seconds remaining with the game basically out of reach, barring a miracle), but it was too little, too late for Cal to come away with anything but a hollow moral victory.
The Cal defense struggled against Oregon's multifaceted attack. The Ducks rushed for 325 yards, including 208 yards and three touchdowns by star runningback De'Anthony Thomas. Marcus Mariota passed for 233 yards and a touchdown, and also was effective on the ground as he rushed for 81 yards and the game's first touchdown, a 35-yard keep on the zone read to make the game 7-0 early. Josh Huff led Oregon in receptions and receiving yards as he totaled five receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown on Mariota's first and only touchdown pass of the day in the second quarter.
Jared Goff had a nice day for Cal in his first career road start, especially in the second half, and ended with 327 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. He also scored Cal's final touchdown of the game on an 11-yard rushing touchdown off a scramble. Chris Harper caught five passes for 78 yards and a score, and Bryce Treggs and Trevor Davis also caught touchdown passes for the Golden Bears. Brendan Bigelow had a great game on the ground as he rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown on just 21 carries.
Next up for Cal is a home game against Washington State. The Cougars lost their first two games against Auburn and USC by a combined score of 67-29, but have reeled off two consecutive wins against weaker competition since then. However, they are heavy underdogs in their matchup against #5 Stanford later tonight.

Re: It's Always Sonny in Berkeley - California Golden Bears (NCAA 14)
Tough loss man. Not all that surprised that you gave up 300 rushing yards considering how bad our defenses have been in the real Sonny ****s era. Maybe you can change that!
Side note: binge read/skimmed thru the first 75 pages of your Frizzell career. Good stuff. I'm going to try and skim thru to where you are now.

Yeah, it was rough defensively, but not surprising. We did seem to be more effective defensively in the second half, at least. The offense was a little delayed getting going, so by the time it got into gear we were so far behind, it was too late.
And, yeah, I LOL at Sonny's name tripping the language filter on here. I've been italicizing the 'y' in his name to keep it from getting starred out, which seems to be working.
