WEEK 1 2014

ULM WARHAWKS 0-0 (0-0)

VS

WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS 0-0 (0-0)

FINAL SCORE:
LOUISIANA MONROE-13
WAKE FOREST 38

SLOPPY SECOND HALF ENDS IN SEASON OPENER LOSS FOR WARHAWKS

Last season, Wake Forest gave the Warhawks one of their two losses. By luck from the schedule makers, ULM would have a chance to get their revenge in week one of the 2014 season. This however, would not happen.

The game would start with ULM winning the toss and electing to kick. Both teams would fail to produce much of a drive on their first possessions. The Demon Deacons would however, win the field position battle which got them into good starting position later in the quarter. That drive, would be capped off by a Cade Carney 11 yard run, his first of three scores on the day. Later in the quarter, Derrick Gore would do what he does best as he tied the game up 7-7 from four yards out. The second quarter would be equally as exciting as the first in regards to offensive play. Both teams would add FG's to tie the game at 10-10 heading into halftime.

The second half would be a disaster for SR QB Garrett Smith and the Warhawks. Three interceptions and a lost fumble by Garrett, led to 28 second half points for the Deacons. The turnovers also, of course, ruined drives of the Warhawks, one atleast that was in the red zone. The Warhawks would score early in the 4th on a Craig Ford FG which made it 24-13 at the time. Two more Wake Forest TDs would ruin all hope of the Warhawks fans who braved the rainy elements to see their team play. The Warhawks lose to the Demon Deacons for the second time in as many years this time, with a final score of 38-13.

Re: NCAA 14 Dynasty Coaching Career ULM

Congrats on the great end to year one. Tough loss to start Year 2, but it's hard to ask for a win in tough conditions and against a power opponent. We all know Smith is a better quarterback than that!

Nevertheless, I'd imagine with having most of the team back as you mentioned, your Warhawks should be in for a good year. Seems like Coach Viator's got things going in the right direction, I'll be keeping my eye on the contract situation and whether or not he jumps ship at some point. Best of luck!

Thanks for reading and responding! Your response kind of makes me feel bad about my next game update, just gonna say we gotta go with the hot hand! But yeah, if I get big offers again in this next offseason its going to be tempting but I really want to see how those recruits turn out!

WEEK 2 2014

ULM WARHAWKS 0-1 (0-0)

AT

LSU TIGERS 0-0 (0-0)

FINAL SCORE
ULM-32
LSU-28

The Warhawks suffered a blow out loss to Wake Forest in week one. Coming into Death Valley didn't seem like the ideal situation for week 2. But that is what the schedule gods put in front of the Warhawks and if they wished to avoid an 0-2 start they would have to play well against a stoute LSU Tiger team.

As the the game began, there was a heavy down pour of rain. This has been commonplace in the Warhawks home games and with being in Louisiana for this game, it should have been expected. In week one, the heavy rain was at least partially responsible for the dropped balls and int's. There would be plenty of both of these in this game as well.

ULM won the toss and elected to kick. LSU's running game was immediately assert their dominance as a combination of runs by HB Derrius Guice, QB Justin McMillan and backup HB N. Brossette would march down the field with ease. The drive would be capped off with a one yard td by Brossette 7-0 LSU

The Warhawks first drive would result in two first downs with a mixture of runs and passes. The drive would stall however, after a Marcus Green drop on third down.

The Tigers would just as easily march down the field again, still leaning heavily on their ground game. Guice, not wanting to be out done by his backup, ran a TD in from four yards out 14-0 LSU. The rest of the first quarter would be a failed drive by the Warhawks as Garrett Smith continued to be under constant pressure and inaccurate on his throws.

The second quarter would be much of the same in regards to the Warhawks offense, however, they would muster a 22 yard field goal by Craig Ford to make the halftime score 14-3 LSU

The Warhawks would get the ball back to start the second half with a chance to cut into the lead and give them a chance to come back for a win as long as the offense could put up some points.

This would not be the case however, as the offense, specifically QB Garrett Smith would struggle. After the Warhawks failed, LSU would again march down the field on a drive that was finished with another TD on a one yard pass from Justin Mcmillan to D. Davis 21-3 LSU. The Warhawks next possession would end in a second pick thrown by Smith. This would result in another LSU TD when Derrius Guice was hit on a 12 yard reception by Mcmillan. This brought the score to 28-3, a lead that appeared to be unreachable especially by the Warhawks struggling offense. With that being the case, coach Viator pulled QB Garrett Smith and inserted Caleb Evans. Evans filled in nicely for Smith after his groin injury kept him out for approximately four weeks last season, throwing for over 1,000 yards and he finished with a better TD/INT ratio then Smith.

The offense would get a jolt of energy with Evans in the game as he almost single handily took the team down the field using both his legs and arm. He would get the team in the redzone as he scrambled to the right for thirteen yards for a first down. The resulting hit on that scramble, would keep Evans on the ground with back pain. Luckily the injury would be found to be minor back spasms that would not keep him out long. After the injury, Smith came back into the game for one play. On this play he threw his best ball of the day as he hit WR Brian Williams on a 18 yard TD to bring the score to a still daunting 28-10. This would remain the score through the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter would see Evans back in the game and the offense still motivated to score and get back into the game. Evans and Derrick Gore would score TD's on a scramble and rushing play to bring the score to 28-24. After Gore's TD, coach Viator decided to go for two to attempt to bring the game within a field goal. The play was slant routes over the middle with Xavier Brown and Marcus Green the primary receivers. Once the ball was hiked, it was obvious the Tiger linebackers were in zone coverage right in the middle where the two would have been thrown their pass. With them covered, Caleb Evans again scrambled to the right, cutting through two defenders for the converted two point conversion 28-25 LSU with a smidge over three minutes to go in the game.

The Tigers next offensive play, would put doubt into the minds of the defense and Warhawk faithful back home as Guice ran the ball up the middle for a solid 15 yard gain and a new set of downs. As Chris Berman would say tick tick tick! The next play would be another five yard run by Guice, followed by a solid stop at the line of scrimmage by the Warhawks defense. The Warhawks now had the LSU offense at third and five with about 1:30 to play and one more timeout. They would have to get a stop on the next play or the game would be over.

On the next play, Mcmillan hit Guice on a check down out of the backfield to the left. He proceeded upfield where he was met by a Warhawk defender near the line to gain. The hit would be made and Guice would go down in a position which appeared to be about a yard short. The chain gain would be summoned. As the chain was stretched out, it was confirmed, the defense had made the stop! fourth and one with about a minute to play. The Warhawks would get the ball on the punt. Marcus Green would get off a decent return, getting the ball to the the Warhawks 40 before being taken down.

Now, it was time for Evans to stake his claim to Warhawk history and his stake for the starting QB role. After a few clutch scrambles and passes, the Warhawks found themselves in the redzone again. The clock would continue to tick down when Evans hit a receiver on a pass down the middle of the field down to the 9 yard line with 20 seconds left.

Evans knew, he had to avoid a sack or anyplay resulting in a tackle inside the field of play. Once the ball was snapped, Evans looked into the endzone for a open receiver. They were all covered and time continued to get closer and closer to 0:00. This time, Evans took off on a scramble to the left. He would be met by a Tiger defender at the goal line (pictured above). As he went to the ground, the ball crossed the goal line, TD Warhawks 32-28 with nine seconds left in the game. After the ensuing kickoff, The Tigers were left with five seconds to play, one final attempt to avoid the upset. Mcmillan would drop back, have good protection and heave the ball fifty yards down field to the right side of the field. His receiver would get behind the Warhawks defender and have a chance at a catch, however, the ball was slightly overthrown. As the Ball fail to the turf, the clock showed all zeros and the Warhawks team rushed onto the field. The Warhawks win a thrilling come from behind victory 32-28.

FINAL SCORE:
LOUISIANA MONROE- 38

GREEN AND PEDERSON'S BIG DAY LEAD WARHAWKS TO VICTORY

WARHAWKS GET THIRD WIN DESPITE EVANS' BACK AND FORTH DAY

Something had to give. The Warhawks came into their week four matchup against Army with the #12 ranked rushing defense. At the same time, The Black knights of Army were ranked #2 in the nation in rushing yards per game.

Early on, it appeared that the Army's rushing attack would be the victors in this match up. The Black Knights received the ball first to start off the game and quickly marched down the field, primarily with their full back, A. Davidson as he took multiple runs up the middle on triple option plays for big yards. The Warhawks defense would finally catch on as they stopped the Black Knights in the redzone, forcing Army to settle for a field goal. 3-0 ARMY

On the Warhawks ensuing drive, Caleb Evans would throw his first pick of the day on his first pass attempt. This set up Army with a short field and a good chance to score again. The defense would hold strong, again holding Army to just a field goal. 6-0 Army That would be the last points the Black Knights would score until late in the forth quarter as the Warhawks defense focused on the run and stayed strong. Josh Pederson would haul in two TD grabs, one in the first and another for the first score of the second quarter to make it 14-6 Warhawks

The Warhawks offense would continue to roll in the second quarter as Derrick Gore and Brian Williams got into the scoring fun, 28-6 Warhawks leading into the second half.

The third quarter would see no points put on the board as Evans throws his second and third picks of the game while Army continued to struggle to move the ball, still 28-6 Warhawks

The fourth quarter would see the Warhawks take a demanding lead 38-6 after a Craig Ford FG and a Evans four yard TD run. Army would score two touchdowns in garbage time to make the score look more respectful as the clock ticked down to 0:00. Final score ULM:38 ARMY:20
