Re: Smoky Mountain State University V2 | Teambuilder Dynasty (NCAA 14)

2019 | Week 12 Recruiting Update

The one thing that's been constantly positive over this losing streak is this 2020 Signing Class and how it's growing each week.

And it got even bigger this week as we picked up 3 more commitments which brings our 2020 Signing Class to 13 players. Thanks to these 3 commits, we now have the #39 Recruiting Class in the country and we're just 6 spots behind FAU for the #1 class in the conference.

3* CB, Mike Brigham | 67 Ovr

6'0" 186 lbs. | Lakeside, VA

91 Speed | 87 Acceleration | 81 Jumping | 80 Agility | 72 Pursuit | 71 Play Recognition | 79 Man Coverage | 76 Zone Coverage | 65 Press

Recruiting Info: Mike Brigham is a 6'0", 186 lbs. Cornerback recruit from Lakeside, VA. This was a huge commit for us. Not only do we love Brigham's athleticism and current ability, but corner is a major need for us. We have 3 Senior CB's graduating and we'd ultimately like to land a total of 3 CB's in this class. Brigham is our 2nd in the class to go along with Brian McDonald. Brigham is also a big pickup because Colorado has been making a late push recently. But, despite their interest picking up, he decided to shut his recruitment down and join our 2020 Class.

Future Outlook: Depending on how our roster shakes out, Brigham may be forced to play next season, even though we don't think he'll be ready. Now if he gets to redshirt, I'd be extremely excited about getting him some playing time as a Redshirt Freshman. He'd have time to work on his agility and coverage skills, along with working on his tackling that could also use some improvement. However, we fully expect him to be a solid starter for us by his 3rd or 4th year in the program.

3* FS, Eric Brown | 72 Ovr

6'3", 210 lbs. | Snyder, TX

88 Speed | 88 Acceleration | 87 Agility | 79 Tackle | 70 Hit Power | 71 Pursuit | 64 Man Coverage | 68 Zone Coverage | 76 Press

Recruiting Info: Eric Brown is another big pickup for us. He's a 6'3", 210 lbs. Strong Safety recruit from Snyder, TX. Adding Brown to this class is big because it solidifies us with another great safety. Him and J.J. Jordan will be wreaking havoc on offenses for years. Brown is another guy who flew under the radar and didn't have any other school heavily involved in his recruitment... Which we are totally fine with because we got a good one!

Future Outlook: Brown is going to redshirt as a Freshman due to current Freshman, Kris Fordinal's strong play. We expect Brown to take over the starting SS role as a Redshirt Junior. However, we are going to get him on the field much sooner than that when we run a 4-2-5 defense to try to defend the pass. So just because he won't necessarily start full time for a few years, does not mean he won't get meaningful playing time... Because he certainly will. This is another kid that we think as All-Conference potential.

3* OLB, Caleb Finley | 72 Ovr | Moving to DE

6'5", 229 lbs. | Toccoa, GA

76 Speed | 78 Acceleration | 79 Strength | 81 Tackle | 70 Hit Power | 73 Pursuit | 74 Play Recognition | 69 Power Moves | 70 Finesse Moves | 78 Block Shed

Recruiting Info: Our staff lost it when this kid committed. Caleb Finley is currently an extremely talented, 6'5", 229 lbs. Outside Linebacker recruit from Toccoa, GA. While he's an OLB recruit, we love his potential at DE, which is where we will put him when he gets on campus. He's got great speed and acceleration for the position along with solid block shed. His pass rushing moves need work, but those will improve over time.

Future Outlook: Finley is going to redshirt his Freshman year so he can get used to the DE position at the collegiate level. He'll be the primary backup to Matt Chase and Kenny Cannon his Redshirt Freshman year as we'll try to get him on the field as much as possible because we love this kids talent and potential. By his Redshirt Senior season, we think he can be an All-Conference player.

Along with the excitement of getting these 3 commits, we also managed to get 9 kids to come on an Official Visit for the Louisiana Tech game. Which is absolutely HUGE considering the fact that this is our last home game of the season.

So with it being Senior Day and a huge recruiting weekend, we're going all out. We'll wear our all black alternate uniforms and hopefully get a huge crowd in for the game. It should be an electric atmosphere all things considered.

The weather once again made it a bit difficult on us. Another cold front came through this weekend which meant we had our second game in the snow in 3 weeks.

Side note though, made for some beautiful scenery in the mountains!

Now, let's get to the action. Tony Amos was responsible for the only score, from either team, in the 1st Quarter. Amos dropped back to pass, saw that no one was open, and saw a running lane. He took off and scrambled for the 14 yard TD run. The only other major highlight of the 1st Quarter came when Junior FS, Jamal Flanagan, picked off his 1st pass of the game. Yep, another one came later.

However, after an eventual punt on our drive following the interception, LA Tech scored their first points of the game. It came on a 5 yard read option keeper by QB Winston Elliott.

On our next drive, Tony Amos' pass was intercepted and the Bulldogs took advantage of the turnover, turning it into 7 points. 4 plays after the interception, Tech found the end zone on a 9 yard slant as Winston Elliott threw a dime to arguably the most talented receiver in the conference, Junior Antwan Hardy. Tech took the 14-7 lead with 2:52 left in the 1st Half.

However, we responded very quickly with a TD of our own. A long 45 yard pass to Nick Brewer set us up near the red zone. And 2 plays later, Amos found Brewer over the middle of the field for the easy 9 yard TD pitch and catch. We had tied the game up at 14-14 with 2:24 left in the half.

We forced them to punt on their next possession and we scored one final time before halftime. With only 14 seconds left, we tried running an HB Sweep to the left to set Tyler Livingston up with a FG opportunity from the middle of the field... But HB Tauren Peters had other ideas. Peters saw a hole, cut through it, and then cut back towards the left sideline and scored on an 11 yard run.

Thanks to the impressive run, we took a 21-14 lead going into halftime.

We absolutely dominated the 3rd Quarter as we outscored Tech 14-0. On our first drive, Tony Amos led a great drive which was capped off on a 7 yard TD catch by Freshman TE Joe Bush. Bush had a remarkable game as he finished with his first career 100 yard effort. His TD put us up 28-14.

And thanks to Jamal Flanagan's 2nd interception, this one came in the end zone, we managed to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard... And then marched right down the field to increase our lead even further.

Amos led another great drive which was capped off by Junior WR Kenyon Meeks hauling in his only catch of the game... And that catch came on an 8 yard TD thanks to Meeks perfectly run curl route. We had a commanding 35-14 lead going into the 4th Quarter.

And this game was not slipping away.

LA Tech scored once more on a 30 yard pass from Winston Elliott to Junior WR Isaiah Graham.

We matched that TD exactly 45 seconds later on a 4 yard TD pass from Tony Amos to Freshman WR Steven McDaniel.

The rest of the drives resulted in punts by each team.

We managed to win in convincing fashion over Louisiana Tech on Senior Day and in front of 9 Official Visitors, 42-21.

There's absolutely nothing to nitpick about this game. Offenses moved the ball at will as we put up 526 yards. Then, our defense only allowed 289 total offensive yards by Louisiana Tech.

This was a picture perfect way to close out our last home game. Now, let's really send our Seniors off with a win as we play our season finale next week @ Old Dominion.

Re: Smoky Mountain State University V2 | Teambuilder Dynasty (NCAA 14)

2019 | Week 13 Recruiting Update

Our momentum on the field carried over into recruiting as we picked up 3 more commitments this week. This pushed our 2020 Class to 16 commitments and to the #32 Recruiting Class in the Country. With these 3 commitments, we have passed FAU for the #1 Class in the Conference!

I was hoping to have a lengthy update this week as we breakdown all the commitments... But it looks like the lengthy update will have to wait until next week.

3* OLB, John Heffner | 72 Ovr

6'5", 218 lbs. | Lancaster, PA

82 Speed | 94 Acceleration | 71 Strength | 71 Tackle | 89 Hit Power | 83 Pursuit | 77 Play Recognition | 70 Block Shed | 72 Man Coverage | 66 Zone Coverage

Recruiting Info: Not gonna lie, this didn't really hit me until now. But damn, this kid is good. John Heffner is a 6'5", 218 lbs. Outside Linebacker recruit from Lancaster, PA. He's got tremendous size at 6'5", 218 lbs. He's fast and has unreal acceleration. His Hit Power is absolutely incredible. I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing him lay some people out over the course of his career here.

Future Outlook: The original plan was to redshirt him. But with how good this kid is already, I think we have to find a role for him next year. With the current state of our program, it would be hard to not give this kid some playing time. We'll give him a shot to win an OLB starting job. But, if he doesn't win a starting OLB job, then a redshirt might be in the picture for the sole purpose of being able to have him for start the following year once Atari McLaurin graduates. But this kid is a stud. We definitely think he can end up being an All-Conference/All-American type player for us.

3* WR, Isaac Greenwood | 69 Ovr

6'1", 208 lbs. | Madeira, OH

92 Speed | 90 Acceleration | 79 Agility | 76 Jumping | 70 Catching | 60 Spectacular Catch | 64 Catch In Traffic | 71 Route Running

Recruiting Info: Isaac Greenwood is a 6'1", 208 lbs. Wide Receiver recruit from Madeira, OH. He's our 3rd and final WR commit of this class... And he's the 'slowest' one of the 3 if that tells you anything about the type of speed we've recruited in this class. Thankfully we got him on campus when we did because North Carolina started making a strong push for him these past couple weeks. We were able to hold them off and secure a commitment from him during his visit this past weekend.

Future Outlook: We love Greenwood's potential. But he absolutely has to be redshirted as a Freshman so he can work on his catching. It's kinda rough right now, but with in a few years, we think he can be a big contributor to our team. He might contribute as soon as his Redshirt Freshman year since Kenyon Meeks and Grant Wood will be graduating.

2* G, Taylor Gooden | 68 Ovr

6'5", 311 lbs. | Mableton, GA

63 Speed | 86 Acceleration | 77 Strength | 62 Agility | 74 Pass Block | 79 Run Block | 72 Impact Block

Recruiting Info: Taylor Gooden is a 6'5", 311 lbs. Guard recruit from Mableton, GA. Gooden has tremendous size and that will only improve once he gets in our strength and conditioning program. Over the last few weeks Ball State and Minnesota have been recruiting him heavily. He actually had a visit lined up for Ball State next week, but cancelled it and committed on his visit this past weekend.

Future Outlook: We've always viewed Gooden as a developmental recruit. He's going to be good, we just need to redshirt him this season to get him acclimated to the college game. Then, we could see him starting for us anywhere from 2-4 years from now. We think he'll be an extremely solid interior lineman for us.

We have scheduled an Official Visit for Kicker Matt Baker for Week 15. Even though it's a bye week, we felt it was important to get him on campus so he could see everything for himself, talk to teachers in his major, and just experience the official visit in general.

Re: Smoky Mountain State University V2 | Teambuilder Dynasty (NCAA 14)

2019 | Week 14 | Old Dominion Recap

Nick Brewer.jpg
Freshman WR Nick Brewer went off once again as he posted another 100 yard receiving effort to end his Freshman campaign

Game Summary

Sadly, this game did not start off like we would have hoped. Our offense had no rhythm and they just crushed us in the first half.

We went into halftime trailing 21-0.

Their offense even got off to a horrendous start. The first score of the game didn't come until the final play of the 1st Quarter when Stone Smartt threw a dime to slot receiver Darrell Brown for the 28 yard score to give them the 7-0 lead.

They would score twice in the 2nd Quarter. The first score came on another TD pass to Darrell Brown. The first TD of the game covered 28 yards, this one covered 29 yards on nearly an identical play.

Then, the Monarchs tacked on one final TD with just 10 seconds left in the half as HB KeSean Strong bulldozed his way into the end zone from 1 yard out.

We trailed 21-0 heading into halftime. But, if you know anything about this team, this wasn't going to stop us from fighting and coming back.

However, Old Dominion got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd half to extend their lead to 28... Now THIS was uncharted waters for us as we had never trailed by 28 all year. This TD came just 48 seconds into the 3rd Quarter on a 5 yard pass from Smartt to his #1 wideout, Senior Eric Kumah. Kumah ran a great slant route as he had at least a step on CB Jamaal Jenkins.

We responded just 16 seconds later with our first TD of the game. Tony Amos hit Freshman WR Nick Brewer for a 34 yard gain on the first play of the drive. On the very next play, Freshman WR Steven McDaniel got behind the Monarch secondary. Amos threw a bomb down the left sideline, McDaniel caught it in stride, and scored easily. We now trailed 28-7.

ODU managed to tack 3 more points on the board on their next possession thanks to a 29 yard FG from the right hash. We came back on our next drive and scored one last TD of the 3rd Quarter. Tauren Peters got banged up on the play before, so Norris Blalock came in and immediately scored on a 9 yard TD run. We trailed 31-14 heading into the 4th Quarter.

The Monarchs tacked on one final FG in the 4th Quarter, this one was from 41 yards out.

On our ensuing possession, Tony Amos found Freshman TE Joe Bush on the corner route. Bush was ALL alone on the right sideline and he got a HUGE block from Nick Brewer. Thanks to the block, no one came close to Bush as he scored on the play that covered 61 yards. We had cut the lead to 34-21 with 3:00 left.

We finally forced the ODU offense to a 3 and out and our next drive resulted in another touchdown. This time, Tony Amos lobbed a ball down the middle of the field to Freshman WR Nick Brewer who was behind the Monarch secondary. Brewer scored with ease on the play that covered 29 yards.

We had rallied from 28 down to only trail 34-28 with 1:40 left in the game.

However, ODU managed to run the clock out and hung on to this game to take it by the final score of 34-28.

It was an unfortunate way to end the season. We put some drives together throughout the game, but nothing came from most of them. Still, 467 yards of offense is pretty damn good. But, it also makes it hard to win when you give up 491 yards of offense to the opposing team.

This has been a fun year full of close games. We have a lot of positives going into next season. We only lose two starters to graduation and we get another off-season to work on progressing our players. We'll also have a strong recruiting class coming in.

Despite the rough 4-8 season, the future is looking pretty good in Gatlinburg, TN.

Re: Smoky Mountain State University V2 | Teambuilder Dynasty (NCAA 14)

2019 | Week 14 Recruiting Update

We didn't finish the season strong on the field, but we finished really strong in recruiting.

We picked up a program record 6 commits this past week which puts us at 22 commits for our 2020 Signing Class. These 6 commits have pushed up to the #20 Recruiting Class in the Country. That's good enough for not only the Top Recruiting Class in the C-USA, but it's the highest ranked Recruiting Class out of any Group-5 school.

I'd say that's pretty damn good coming off a 4-8 season!

3* DE, Andre Reese | 68 Ovr

6'5", 246 lbs. | Elmwood Park, NJ

75 Speed | 74 Acceleration | 72 Strength | 76 Tackle | 76 Power Moves | 75 Finesse Moves | 76 Block Shed | 71 Pursuit

Recruiting Info: Andre Reese is a 6'5", 246 lbs. Defensive End recruit from Elmwood Park, NJ. Reese is a guy that was originally higher on us than we were on him. However, after getting him to camp and getting a good look at his ability, we liked what we saw, and really ramped up our recruitment of him. For the last few weeks, Hawai'i has been coming after him pretty heavily. However, he shut his recruitment down and committed to us. Because New Jersey to Tennessee is a hell of a lot closer than New Jersey to Hawai'i.

Future Outlook: Reese was always recruited as a developmental prospect. Typically, we'd redshirt a kid so they can gain weight and strength. With Reese, we plan to redshirt him this upcoming year just because he won't get a whole bunch of playing time and we feel like it would be best so he can progress on his Pass Rushing ability. Besides that, this is a kid we think can be an absolute beast for us in 2-3 years.

3* OLB, A.J. Cleveland | 69 Ovr

6'3", 219 lbs. | Franklin, NH

83 Speed | 83 Acceleration | 78 Strength | 72 Tackle | 70 Hit Power | 69 Block Shed | 72 Man Coverage | 76 Zone Coverage

Recruiting Info: A.J. Cleveland is a 6'3", 219 lbs. Outside Linebacker recruit from Franklin, NH. Cleveland was a guy that fell under the radar all year and we're totally fine with that. His skill set is perfect for what we look for in a linebacker. He is a candidate to possibly make the move to MLB due to his size and speed.

Future Outlook: Cleveland is a guy who will probably get redshirted next year. And it's another case of a guy that once he's in the program for a couple years, will develop his skills and become a force to be reckoned with. We love recruiting players that are extremely athletic. Because you can develop someone's technique over the course of 4 years... But you can't teach speed and other god given qualities. This kid is one of the most athletic players in our class and we look forward to seeing him develop.

3* DT, Tim Jones | 69 Ovr

6'6", 289 lbs. | Miamisburg, OH

68 Speed | 81 Acceleration | 76 Strength | 71 Tackle | 77 Power Moves | 77 Finesse Moves | 75 Block Shed | 72 Play Recognition

Recruiting Info: Tim Jones is a massive 6'6", 289 lbs. Defensive Tackle recruit from Miamisburg, OH. Jones is a guy we're very excited about. His athletic abilities are incredible for a kid of his size. Even his current football ability is pretty solid. Jones went under the radar for most of the season... And then LSU of all teams put the full court press on around Week 11. We somehow managed to hold off an SEC school. So he might not be the most talented player in the class... But this is probably the most satisfying commit we got based on what other school got involved with him.

Future Outlook: Jones will not redshirt next year. As it stands we'll have 6 DT's on the roster. Nick White is going to redshirt, so Tim Jones will probably be in the two deep. Depending on how he does his Freshman season, he might get redshirted during his Sophomore year. Because while his Speed and Acceleration are fantastic, his Strength does need a bit of work. Regardless, this kid is gonna be a monster. Definite All-Conference caliber player.

3* OLB, Jeremy Scott | 69 Ovr

6'2", 209 lbs. | Chambersburg, PA

84 Speed | 79 Acceleration | 74 Strength | 79 Tackle | 65 Block Shed | 67 Pursuit | 74 Play Recognition | 66 Man Coverage | 73 Zone Coverage

Recruiting Info: Jeremy Scott is a 6'2", 209 lbs. Outside Linebacker recruit from Chambersburg, PA. Scott, like fellow commit A.J. Cleveland, will be considered for a move to MLB. We love MLB's who can run sideline to sideline. And Scott definitely has the Speed and Coverage abilities to play a solid MLB. This kid was another one that completely fell under the radar. And we couldn't be happier because we got a great LB in Scott.

Future Outlook: Scott is 10000% redshirting his Freshman year. Even in the C-USA, we don't feel comfortable trotting out an 18 year old Linebacker that's currently built like a Safety. So he'll redshirt, add some weight, and be a solid contributor in our two deep, along with Special Teams. If he's moved to MLB, we fully expect him to take over for Scott Thompson once he graduates. At OLB, it depends if he's a Weakside or Strongside LB as to when he'll start.

3* HB, Aaron Smith | 68 Ovr

5'11", 185 lbs. | Ormond Beach, FL

93 Speed | 92 Acceleration | 86 Agility | 74 Trucking | 85 Elusiveness | 80 Spin Move | 74 Juke Move | 74 Vision

Recruiting Info: Aaron Smith is a 5'11", 185 lbs. Running Back recruit from Ormond Beach, FL. Smith is EXACTLY the type of RB we want for our system. Oddly enough, he's about as close to a carbon copy of Tauren Peters as you can get. He's got elite Speed and Acceleration and he's extremely shifty. Bowling Green tried to get involved here late. But thankfully, their efforts came too late as he committed to us before we'd enter a recruiting battle for him.

Future Outlook: We haven't decided on whether or not we'll redshirt Smith yet. While he wouldn't be a regular in terms of playing time at RB, he could be a dynamic return game specialist for us his Freshman year. So, we'll try him, fellow Freshman WR Van Peoples, and Redshirt Freshman WR Terrence Cole out as our primary returner. Throughout his career though, we think Smith will be a game changer thanks to his elite Speed and extremely impressive Elusiveness. This kid is an All-Conference caliber player.

2* CB, Adam Capps | 67 Ovr

6'2", 176 lbs. | Gatlinburg, TN

92 Speed | 92 Acceleration | 87 Agility | 71 Pursuit | 63 Play Recognition | 76 Man Coverage | 70 Zone Coverage | 74 Press

Recruiting Info: Adam Capps is a 6'2", 176 lbs. Cornerback recruit from right here in Gatlinburg, TN. Capps is the perfect example of what we want in a corner. A tall, rangy corner with elite Speed. We can develop your coverage abilities. We can't make you taller or really make you all that faster. Despite his 2 star ranking, this is a kid that we're very excited about because his ranking does not match his ability.

Future Outlook: Capps will probably be redshirted next year as we've come to the decision that SS Chester Franklin will probably get moved to CB. That gives us the flexibility to redshirt Capps and fellow Freshman CB Mike Brigham. Give Capps a few years in the program, and this kid will be a lockdown corner. We're really excited about his potential here at SMSU.

We only have 3 recruits left on our board for the off-season. They are, 3* TE Todd Hart, 3* OLB Steven Williamson (which we're in a recruiting board for), and 3* K Matt Baker.

Hart and Baker are pretty close to committing, while Williamson will obviously be the toughest one to lock up because NC State is recruiting him hard.

Even if we don't get any of the 3 recruits left on our board. This is still a fantastic recruiting class which should help set the foundation for years of success.
