Series Recap: Cubs Win Another Series, 2-1 at home against the Rockies

Game 1: Cubs 3 Rockies 2. This was the 17th inning game I posted about a few pages ago. One hell of a game.

Game 2: Cubs 0 Rockies 1. Kershaw picks up the loss, while giving up just 4 hits. Cubs could not get anything going offensively. Great game from opposing pitcher Johnny Cueto.

Game 3: Cubs 2 Rockies 1. Low scoring series in general. Aaron Nola fantastic again, going 8 innings. Yoan Moncada got his first HR of his career, Mallex Smith started for the slumping Mazara and got 2 steals and scored the first run of the game.

    Record: 9-3.

Next Series: 3 Game Series @ St Louis.

    Probably Pitchers:

    Game 1: Alex Wood (2-0, 2.77 ERA) v Phil Hughes (1-0, 0.66 ERA)
    Game 2: Trevor Bauer (1-0, 3.45 ERA) v Mike Fiers (1-1, 3.65 ERA)
    Game 3: Shohei Otani (0-1, 1.46 ERA) v Matt Cain (2-0, 2.30 ERA)

    NEWS

Nomar Mazara has been sent down to Triple-A for a few weeks to get out of his slump and overall get his head right. If nothing comes of that, a trade may be coming, as the Cubs have no patience at this point from someone with the potential as Mazara, who they drafted early for. The Cubs called up LF Alex Presley, who was batting .361 in AAA.

      GAME 5:

The Oakland Athletics fend off the Seattle Mariners' late push, hold on 5-3

The Seattle Mariners were never able to get over the hump and overcome their troubles against the Oakland Athletics on Friday, as the Seattle Mariners fell 5-3 at Safeco Field after falling behind by five runs in the fourth inning. The Seattle Mariners scored on a solo home run by Travis D'Arnaud in the fourth inning, a groundout by Robinson Cano in the fifth inning, and a solo home run by Jorge Soler in the sixth inning. Despite their efforts, the Seattle Mariners couldn't get over the hump. Ian Kinsler had two extra-base hits for the Oakland Athletics. He homered in the second inning and doubled in the fourth inning.

Tony Cingrani brought the heat against the Seattle Mariners during his outing. Cingrani held the Seattle Mariners hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four. Alex Wood got the win for the Oakland Athletics. He allowed three runs over six innings. He struck out two, walked one and surrendered nine hits.

Kinsler, Matt Carpenter and Curtis Granderson helped lead the Oakland Athletics. They combined for five hits and three RBIs. Nathan Eovaldi couldn't get it done on the hill for the Seattle Mariners, taking a loss. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, walked two, struck out three, and allowed five runs. The Oakland Athletics stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring one run on an RBI single by Matt Holliday.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

The Cardinals traded several prospects as well as two MLB players in two deals that netted two key pieces for their World Series run in year 1 and beyond.

        Cards send:

        SP Jason Hammel
        RF Aaron Judge (A prospect)
        C Alex Avila

        Brewers send:

        C Salvador Perez

The Cardinals get a front line all-star/gold glove catcher in Salvy

        Cards send:

        LF Jesse Winkler (A prospect)
        CF Rosell Herrera (C prospect)
        C Jeff Bandy (C prospect)

        Braves send:

SP Danny Salazar (expiring but ARB 3 more years)

Danny Salazar immediately becomes The Red Birds Ace

GM Michael Sword aggressively pursued an Ace and front line back stop and felt the two missing pieces to the championship puzzle are now in place. "We are thrilled to be getting such a great young catcher in Salvador Perez". "Danny Salazar is a young, tough, live armed ace". Being he had 3 more years left in Arbitration years some pundits are puzzled why the Braves made the deal. Atlanta really felt they needed to reload the farm and were crazy about Jesse Winkler. He was the centerpiece of the deal. They also seemed to love Rosell Herrera the speedy CF. He has had a super hot start this year in AA ball (batting .345 with 12 SB) so the Braves felt great about the deal. On the other side the Brew Crew loved the haul they took in for the expensive Perez (due 40 plus million on his contract). Hammel is a highly serviceable veteran starter. He has had an up and down season thus far, but has a live arm and will give you quality innings. Aaron Judge is a real prize. The A rated power hitting RF was the centerpiece. But don't sell lefty hitting C Alex Avila short. He is young and has plenty of upside left.

Manager Mike Matheny is very excited to have his two new prizes. Salazar will move into the #1 rotation spot moving down Yordano Ventura to the #2 slot. And of course Perez will start and replace veteran AJ Pierzynski who is actually having a great season (.280 5 HR's) AJ can now be the veteran backup he should be at his advanced age. Ventura did not take the news very well.....it was obvious he was a little disappointed his rotation spot was changed, but he will have to adjust according to Matheny. "We love Yordano, think he has CY Young type stuff, and still will need him to be great for us to go where we want. But when you have a chance to bring in another young arm like Danny....you do it".

The Cardinals Rotation looks strong with this addition and may be the best young staff top to bottom in MLB.

        Danny Salazar
        Yordano Ventura
        Steven Matz
        Kenta Madea
        Carlos Rodon

Red Birds Quick Pitch Team Statistic Update

          Overall Record - 28-22
          Home - 13-15
          Road - 15-7
          First Place NL Central

          Batting

          AVG - .267 (MLB Rank 6th)
          HR - 48 (MLB Rank 22nd)
          RBI - 210 (MLB Rank 15th)
          SB - 30 (MLB Rank 7th)

          Pitching

          ERA - 3.66 (MLB Rank 10th)
          SO - 410 (MLB Rank 9th)
          RA - 196 (MLB Rank 11th)
          HR - 56 (MLB Rank 21st)

The Cardinals thus far have been road warriors. At home it has been a mixed bag amazingly. However with the recent trades for Salazar and Perez the Red Birds are primed to start playing even better. Something that must improve is the bullpen. Quakenbush, Motte and Smoker have been struggling recently and they need to get better and fast. The starting rotation has really been solid and getting the game to the 7th inning more often than not. But Motte and Smoker in particular have been having their struggles getting the game to Betances who has been nothing short of elite. Dellin is sitting with an amazing .054 ERA and 17 saves through 50 games.

At the plate Bryce Harper has been in a rut for the last 10 games watching his average drop from .305 down to .265. He does lead the team in doubles and HR's (14) and is also playing great defense in RF. Manager Mike Matheny is not concerned at all with Bryce's recent slide. "All part of the ebb and flow of the marathon we call the regular season". Greg Bird has been the teams MVP at the dish. The emerging star 1B is hitting a robust .310 with 12 HR's and 38 RBI's. Francisco Lindor and Ender Inciarte are doing a fine job at the top of the order and Starling Marte has officially caught fire here in the last 6 games and leads the team with 15 SB's.

A full report of individual player stat's thru May is forth coming as we close out the month in year 1.

Red Sox Welcome Back Roark and Walker

The second half starts and see the return of Taijuan Walker and Tanner Roark to the rotation. This will, for now, put an end to the time Urias and Berrios saw on the major league roster, though they might not want to get too comfortable, given the injury track record of pitchers this year.

The rotation will go Sale, Walker, Roark, Dickey, Maeda to get the 2nd half underway. Maeda makes his third start for the Red Sox as the team battles the Yankees.

The Red Sox are 54-35 and hold a modest 5-game lead in the AL East.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

              Boston Ponders: Is Dickey Done?

The Red Sox have two "old men" on the roster. Ichiro, who is at least still being competitive, and Dickey, who was also at least giving a respectable performance.

              Until now.

Dickey just got done giving up 10 runs in 5 innings of work. Farrell kept thinking his man would get out of the 6th...but it never happened. The shelling just continued, the knuckler looked more like a b.p. fastball, and the runs kept mounting.

The bullpen kept it at 10 runs but the hole was way too deep at this point.

While Dickey is around largely to buy time for the young arms in the rotation, and has been doing better than most of the better arms like Urias, Reyes, and the short stint of fail that was Jose Berrios' chance, a game like this might shake all those ideas.

"I don't want to put too much on this start. It was a disaster, but it's just one game, one loss in the standings. It will look worse on his stat sheet than our AL East positioning, "Farrell commented.

It was just one game, but we're also talking about a pitcher heading in the wrong direction and who came in with a decent-but-not-good 4.12 ERA...an ERA that's now 5.09, firmly into "just plain bad" territory.

Dickey is in the bottom of the rotation, so perhaps it's not as bad as it might seem. The Sox might could endure one 50/50 proposition, at best, in the rotation and still compete strongly for the AL East. But, then again, we know what pitchers have been like this year.

Suddenly that 9 R debacle Alex Reyes put up doesn't look so bad, though that was in just 3 innings. At least he has the excuse of still learning how to pitch.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

In my experience, there's no middle ground when I play Dickey. Either he's fine or he gets blasted.

If I were stuck with him on my team, I'd relegate him to the mop-up role and only play him when up or down by 6.

                      APRIL 2016 UPDATE

The Giants closed out the month of April on a 6 Game winning streak, as Bud Norris secured his first victory of the young season in a 9-3 romping of the Mets. Corey Kluber looks to open the month of May with a victory to secure the series sweep.

Kluber has been nothing short of an Ace this year, as evidenced by leading the league in ERA (1.09) & WHIP (0.76), while sitting just under the Pirates Chris Sale in WAR amongst pitchers (1.21). On the offensive side of the ball, Andrew McCutchen looks to be a legitimate threat in the MVP race, with a WAR of 1.60 to close out the month of April.

                      Divison Leaders
                      AL East: Blue Jays 16-9
                      AL Central: Twins 14-10

                        KLUBER DEALS

Looking to start the month of May off on the right foot, the Giants had the right man for the job on the mound in Corey Kluber. As has been the usual on the season, Corey Kluber pitched outstanding, to a 7IP 6H 1R 8K line. Unfortunately, the Giants bats couldn't pick him up today. Vince Velasquez pitched a great game as well, going 7IP 5H 3BB 7K, while picking up his first victory of the season.

The bright spot today, was George Springer continued to look like he was getting out of his season long slump, knocking 2 singles to improve his average to .237 on the season.

The Giants (19-7) travel to Cincinnati to end the road trip with 3 games against the Reds (15-10). The Reds are led by a tandem of Jose Bautista & Hanley Ramirez. With the leader of the Rookie of the Year race, Trevor Story, batting cleanup for the Reds. Here are our pitching matchups for the series:
                        Aaron Nola (2-1 3.00) vs Gerrit Cole (1-2 5.00)

Ichiro Likely to Miss Rest of Season

Looks like Ichiro's 42-year-old legs said "no more!" (or at least the Japanese equivalent) as after stealing a base, his legs barely were able to stand.

The injury was diagnosed as a hamstring tear, costing him up to three months to heal.

"He couldn't put any weight on it, barely could stand up, " Farrell commented, "I think this might be the way it ends for him, unfortunately."

If so, Ichiro went down doing what he's done since arrive in the States, hustle, play hard, and run the bases aggressively. Suffering an injury after succeeding in stealing a base seems fitting, if there's such a thing.

Ichiro is batting .255 with 3 HR and 28 RBI. The stolen base was his 16th in 23 attempts (69.6% success). He also has a triple and 17 doubles on the season.

Mallex Smith will get another shot in center field, which moves Buxton over to RF. Like Buxton, Mallex will need to prove himself at the plate more than in the field. He'll also be trying to win hearts and minds while DeShields, Jr. is still on the mend.

Finnegan's Third Injury Knocks Him Out

The Rotation Curse claims another victim...or in this case, a repeat victim. Brandon Finnegan's third stint on the DL will take him out for the rest of the season in all likelihood.

Finnegan suffered a separated shoulder in the 2nd inning of a game against the Dodgers. Trainers were initially optimistic as the shoulder joint was relocated successfully, but there was some ligament damage as well, so they felt it best to shut the young arm down.

Alex Reyes will return instead of Julio Urias, largely because Urias' struggles have carried over to his return to AAA. Reyes might have gotten his head on straight enough to be better.

However, the Sox are going to start Sale (and the rest of the rotation) on short rest to make sure Reyes is rested and re-acclimated to the routines at the major league level.

Finnegan was 4-3 with a 4.21 ERA in what will be an injury-shortened season for the youngster.

A little late to the party; just completed my fantasy draft for this year's game. I chose my favorite team, the Mets and started with the 19th overall pick.

I'm at work now, so I may miss a player or two on my bench, but here's how my team is looking at the start of the season.

Also, I imported the 60 legendary players for fun

Notes: Thinking about platooning Mazara and Buxton in CF until one takes claim of the job. I'm also considering trading one or both for a proven center fielder. Either way, expect whoever is not starting to come in as a late game sub for Cepeda in left field. Also thinking of platooning at third with Gallo/Baez. Holt will spend time all across the diamond. Swihart will double as our fifth/sixth outfielder and backup catcher. Hazelbaker provides a steady glove in the outfield and a quality pinch hitter and runner.

                              Starting Rotation
                              Matt Harvey, rhp

                              Carlos Rodon, lhp
                              Bartolo Colon, rhp

                              Javier Lopez, lhp
                              Koji Uehara, rhp

                              Andrew Miller, lhp

Notes: I'm happy to have both Harvey and Thor aboard atop the rotation. After those two there are question marks. Rich Hill has played well IRL after years of injuries; hoping he can do the same as our third starter. Rodon, Colon and Sanchez will round out the four and five spots with the odd man out seeing time in the pen as the long man.

The bullpen looks solid up-and-down. Tons of hard throwing, late game options to choose from.

Overall I'm excited to play through a season. I don't anticipate playing all 162 games; I'll likely play one and sim a few to keep things moving. I'll be sure to report back!

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

The Red Sox finally get to enjoy a day off, their first since the All-Star Break. Overall, they went 10-10, which isn't good, per se, but it's been enough to tread water and stay hovering around the .600 mark and a handful of games over the O's.

Of concern, however, are a couple things: Chris Carter and the bullpen.

Carter has completely collapsed. The strikeouts are starting to arrive and the batting average has plummeted as a result. He's fighting to say in the .250's after being in the .300's for much of the first half. Perhaps the real Chris Carter is starting to show up. That might not bode well, or at least warrant him being moved behind Schwarber, who has been relatively consistent.

With how the rest of the lineup is inconsistent at best, the big bats need to be on the ball, literally and figuratively.

The other concern is perhaps even more worrying. The bullpen, a tower of strength in the first couple months, has become vulnerable. Robles and Herrera have both struggled more often than not and the long relief spot has been dicey for a while, if not all year, thanks to the constant shuffling of bodies and no one doing well while there. Then there's Familia's continuing hot-and-cold play, often within the same outing. Has last save, his 26th, saw him give up 2 runs to barely hold on to a win.

Fortunately, Chapman is still mowing people down (and further making it unlikely he'll become closer - he's just too valuable to be confined to just the 9th inning) while Tazawa has remained steady. How good has Chapman been? He's closing in on being the 2nd most valuable pitcher on the team. His 2.0 WAR is just shy of Walker's 2.1. To put that in perspective, if he was a starter on track for 200 innings, he'd be on pace for 6.3 WAR. Chris Sale's 200-inning pace? 6.6 WAR...

Chapman has been basically an ace-level pitcher from the bullpen.

The starting rotation is decent enough, but they often need bullpen support. Roark and Walker seem to be 6 or 7 inning guys, even when doing well, and who knows what you'll get from Alex Reyes, Julio Urias, Dickey, or whoever else is in that spot. That leaves Sale as a workhorse when he's on, and Maeda, who might be an 8 inning guy at his best.

Speaking of Maeda, he's been a godsend for the rotation thus far. He's 5-0 since arriving to the Red Sox and has lowered his ERA to 2.65.
