Safe to say it's been a rough couple of months for the Angels, struggling to a 19-21 record, meaning after 110 games their record now sits at 60-50. They've fallen from being clear at the top of the wild card race to being half a game back of two teams fighting for the second spot, 5 behind the Blue Jays who threaten t run away with the first wildcard spot.
The main reason for this downturn has been the offence just falling apart, with only Ben Revere able to maintain his average over the period (and a couple of guys who've been consistently poor all year). Even Mike Trout has been suffering at the plate, even dropping below .300 at one point, but despite struggling to get hits he's continuing to carry the offence with his homerun tally, leading the league with 37. Throw in his 29 steals and he's n for a 50-40 season.
In a desperate attempt to turn out fortunes around, we gambled at the deadline, making a move for Nick Castellanos to bolster our third base options for the next few years. He's not having much of a season for a terrible Tigers team, but sheer desperation saw us part with a couple of our best prospects and unexceptional utility infielder Kaleb Cowart. We also moved on Petit and Alvarez just for a change of scenery as it wasn't working out here, bringing in unappreciated Nats AAA lefty Tim Collins to be our new southpaw out of the pen, with the belief that he couldn't do much worse than Alvarez, while Shoemakers return from injury freed up Petit to move on.
Whether these changes are enough to turn the tide, I'm not overly optimistic, our bats just need to wake up if we're to stand any chance of winning the hotly contested second wildcard. One eye starts to drift towards next year and who will be moved on. We've a lot of expiring contracts and some players horribly underperforming (looking at you Tyler Skaggs and Kole Calhoun)
