I personally don't find the inside "a mess" but it's just a really really old inside, like we're taking 100 year old interior that all needs replaced, it still works, there are just a lot of newer stuff that would work a lot better

Re: MLB The Show 18 Twitch Stream Starting Now - Franchise Mode

I was surprised when the guys in the stream said that "this is what we chose" to work on. Not surprised because they chose to work on UI (although that wouldn't have been what I would choose), but because it made it sound as if there isn't someone in control of where Franchise mode is going five years, three years, or even one year from now.

Thinking about it a little more, it kind of makes sense. It hasn't felt like there has been a solid direction to Franchise Mode. Every year, we get a few bullet-point features, and the vague promise of more to come next year. I wonder if Franchise mode is missing a lead producer or something who can chart out the long-term plan for the Franchise.

Because if the "Phases" is the bedrock for more to come next year, I'm all for it. What I worry about, though, is that the people left on the Franchise team are struggling to keep up with fixing legacy issues, adding one or two bullet-point features, and squashing bugs.

I absolutely understand the limited resources for this mode. But what I don't understand is why they don't support a huge feature that are already in the game, like morale. Why add it only to let it sit and not really work the way it should?

Really, though, I'm probably reading way more into everything than what's there. I'm underwhelmed by the additions, but I'll probably break down and buy it because it's the best and only simulation-style gameplay-based baseball game around.

I have voiced my displeasure in SDS, being so conservative when it comes to advancing this game, no need to list stuff as it has become redundant and at this point it appears to have fallen upon deaf ears.

            So what do I like

I really like the Menus, they are an exponential improvement.

I like that Primary Position gets more weight over OVR

I like that pitching performance (bullpen) is evaluated after each series, that's dope.

I like the new tag system great improvement over the nonexistent one.

            Welcomed Improvements

Crowd Anticipation and participation, player emotion and animations,

Commentary will be graded on the bell curve, because they keep recycling talent which also resets the dialogue to be limited.

I will reserve judgement on hitting, and pitching being harder.

That said, Let's start The Show, Thursday 9pm PST for me.

I haven't watched every minute of every stream. In which stream did they display the new tag system? I'm concerned it will be overdone and result in automatic outs on every close tag play.

I agree on the pitching difficulty increase, but I hope it makes it more difficult to completely control your location. Pure analog is op because you can assure pitches stay up in the zone or down in the zone by purposely waiting just before or after the Target line. The best pitchers in the game are simply not that good all the time, and sometimes pitches just don't go where you wanted it to even though you thought you threw it well.

I think the larger error in your pitching input should increase the ability of the hitter to punish that mistake. To often really bad input leads to pitches way out of the zone, I think more of them should end up in the zone.

I also think i spent time in dd because i wanted to unlock the rangers nameplate ect. I also played that awful retro mode a few weeks ago to get those trophies.

The trophies in franchise mode can be gotten in only a few minutes.
This is a continuation of a discussion in the rtts stream thread but it applies more to franchise. It began when I tried to post on the "official website" which is moderated by an employee of San Diego Studios. I discovered I was unable to post and when I PM'd the moderator to ask why he said it was because their statistics show I haven't played the show 17 enough. I played hundreds of hours in offline franchise - manage mode - but apparently whatever criteria they use to evaluate time spent playing the game doesn't capture that.

I don't care about trophies but when I looked at my profile I discovered I had zero trophies for the show 17. Therefore I was speculating perhaps they use trophies as a way to gauge interest in each mode and given the fact franchise with only 3 trophies none of which interest me as a long time franchise player could be the reason franchise seems to get such shallow attention. I had critical situations turned off and never used quick manage or player lock - with those being the only 3 trophies in franchise I had no trophies. That's okay with me unless trophies are the criteria they use to calculate interest in each mode. It might also explain why online franchise got axed. Even if every franchise user got the 3 rather odd trophies it would be far fewer than other modes.

Whatever criteria they use they clearly don't capture people playing offline franchise because I played hundreds of hours and their statistics according to an employee of SDS show I haven't played the game enough.

I also noticed the only trophy related to classic stadiums is for inside the park home run at Polo Grounds which would be very rare - and we got no more classic stadiums this year. Did they use that to calculate interest in classic stadiums?

Re: MLB The Show 18 Twitch Stream Starting Now - Franchise Mode

I've bought this game on day one every year this generation, but I just can't do it this time. This series is progressing at a snail's pace and I was very disappointed with my time during the beta. It's not that it's a bad game, but without getting into specifics (no idea if the NDA still holds), it was just a lot more of the same. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I feel like we've been flying in a neverending holding pattern with this series.

To be clear, I will be getting the game at some point via rental or a discounted purchase, but not at full price. This has become a theme with me as of late. I suppose years of buying everything and getting burned on multiple occasions has made me a little more hesitant about throwing money around. Plus, I hate sending the message to these companies that they can throw any product at me, and them knowing that I'll accept it. My little moral stance doesn't mean much in the big picture, but it works for me.

Hopefully next year we'll see some real progression from this game. New facial hair, Diamond Dynasty cards, and this slow burn of series updates that they hype up for us every year have worn thin now.

                        I noticed that also.

I'm hesitant to read too much into "how they said something," because they're live and on a stream and probably aren't regurgitating a line-by-line script. So there'll be nerves and misstatements and spontaneity.

But, it seemed like (A) they "chose franchise mode" in the sense that it had been vacated by the previous SDS developer(s) working on it (why? did Luis and Victor etc move to DD like we were thinking?) and (B) Matt was trying really hard to assure us throughout the stream that he and Clayton were "franchise guys" and that they "got it." Almost as if they felt like the need to produce credentials of some kind and to be "sim enough." It was interesting.

Reading too much into the tone or this or that is probably a waste of time. Most of the devs at SDS aren't as polished/experienced as Ramone is at being a live personality that answers questions (and understands how messed up things can get in the community if said the wrong way). But, I think you might be onto something as far as why this mode seems to lack an overarching direction (other than to make it easier to play).

First: I'm really glad I wasn't the only one.

Second: Totally agree with everything you said. Even if it wasn't really indicative of what's going on behind the scenes, personnel and leadership-wise, I think there's nevertheless a lack of direction to the mode.

DD gets the bells and whistles and the innovation. The energy, you know? People are excited to get on the stream and talk about it.

Franchise gets... a delayed stream, what looked like a distracted Ramone, two guys who sound like they don't want to be there, and more than a little defensive tone throughout (not that I wouldn't be defensive, given the reactions). Not to overburden the point RE direction, but the stream felt aimless and sort of glum. It's hard to get excited about menus, but if they can't get excited, I don't know how they can get their audience excited.

Franchise mode gets 1/xth the resources of DD or RTTS, and maybe they were trying to figure out ways to get it more money –*by attracting more casuals. What attracts more casuals? Brighter screens! Easier to parse menus! Click here to skip this thing you probably don't want to do!

Attract more users to Franchise, get the mode more money, which pumps more resources and personnel into the team, which makes a better mode (which starts the whole thing over again).
