Does anybody really listen to their incessant rambling while you’re trying to hit, pitch, especially in tense situations?

Not during tense situations, no. But my games usually last an hour or so. That’s a lot of rambling.

MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)

I’m playing RTTS as a starting pitcher, and I’m disappointed with some realism issues.
        1) The VAST majority of American pitchers start their first full season in the minors at 19, not 18. Think about it. Most kids are 18 by June after their senior year in high school. They’re drafted in June of their 18th year, maybe play some rookie ball that summer, then start their first full year of pro ball at age 19. Seems like it only takes a little thought to get this right.
        2) The option to play college ball should be for 3 years, not 1. Just look at real life and apply it to the game. Excluding JUCO kids, you have to wait 3 years if you go to college to re-enter the draft. Then, you’d be playing your first FULL season in the minors at age 22.
        3) I chose the control archetype for my RTTS pitcher. I barely break 90 with my fastball and was drafted in the 15th round. My stuff isn’t particularly good. I don’t have any single dominant pitch. That’s all good and matches the archetype.
Problem is, I was promoted to the majors my during 2nd year as a pro, started half a dozen games, and the team moved me to CLOSER after trading away their previous closer.
At the time of the move, I was averaging around 3 K/9. Name one MLB club who would move a 19 (should be 20-) year old rookie to closer with average stuff, an 89-90MPH fastball, and about the lowest possible K/9 numbers ever witnessed from a pitcher who’s pitching well enough to stay in the league.
Highly unrealistic. Yes, it creates a little drama, but the type of drama a writer who’s not a baseball fan would slap on some crappy baseball movie.
Of course, I converted 20 of 21 save opportunities, while retaining my 3 K/9, by hitting my spots and inducing groundballs and lineouts right at my defenders, which brings me to my next point.
        4) H/9 is a debatable “skill” at best. There’s a reason why it’s not in the Fielding Independant Pitching formula.
BB/9 is a redundant “skill”. That’s what we have Control for.
K/9 is a redundant “skill”. That’s what we have Velocity, Movement and to some extent Control for.
HR/9 is a weird one, but is really just some combination of Velocity, Control and Movement.
In RTTS, we shouldn’t have to upgrade H/9 as an attribute. We should have to upgrade the movement, velocity, command of our pitches and sequence them well to keep the ball off the barrel of the bat and hope we get lucky more often than not, just like real pitchers do.
        H/9, K/9, BB/9, HR/9 should be stats, not attributes.
In my RTTS, I upgraded H/9 so I’d have good enough outings to be able to upgrade the other stuff. That’s a backwards design.
It leads to me being able to only strikeout 3 guys per 9 in the major leagues and still be an effective pitcher. They hit balls right at my fielders. My BABIP has to be very low.
Nolan Ryan had a low BABIP. Maddux had a low BABIP. Some 19 year old kid with average stuff should not have a lower BABIP over an entire season than those pitching gods.
It’s the backwards way of building player attributes that causes this. I’ve been on about this for several years, and I’m saying it again in hopes a dev will listen, understand and implement the changes to fix it.
        5) After each season, by simply looking at the retired players screen I can see the player regression due to age is severely flawed.
Zach Greinke, among others, retires after a year in which he had an ERA around 3.50 and a WHIP around 1.25. His overall rating was 59. The previous year he threw 200 innings and had a good year.
Sin Soo Choo hit .300 with 33 HR in 2019, then spent the entirety of 2020 in the minor leagues and retired after the season with an overall in the 50’s.
Eduardo Encarnacion had a nearly identical 2020 to Choo, having played 150 games in 2019 and posting decent numbers, then spending the vast majority of 2020 in the minors. He retired with an overall in the 50’s.
These things hardly ever happen in real life. Multi-year all stars who’ve made over $100 million don’t spend a year in the minors before hanging it up.
They don’t even get SENT to the minors right out of spring training after putting up good numbers the year prior.
They don’t go from being above replacement level players to the 25th best player on a AAA or AA club overnight.
        It’s a gradual process.
Yes, I’m sure that there are exceptions to the rule, but we don’t make them commonplace in a sim baseball game.

Maybe the technology just isn’t in the PS4 to make a sports game that plays out like the real thing.
OOTP has got their AI about right, but they don’t have gameplay, so maybe that’s how they’re able to squeeze so much realism into it.
It seems like you could merge the text-based excellence of OOTP with the gameplay of The Show, but maybe not.
I hope it happens one day.

Heidi Watney annoys me, and was terribly implemented. I would probably sue if I were her. She's beautiful in real life and looks like a monster at times in the game and literally looks like something else.

Not sure how they messed that up that badly lol. There are times me and my girl literally have busted out laughing when her facial expressions go from a weird smile to this evil stare. Looking like Chucky or something. It's kind of creepy at times.

Just imagine how badly they’d butcher Ken Rosenthal. His bow tie would eat his face.

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)

I know that some people aren't feeling defense this year, but I personally think its spectacular. I know I've said that before, but after the last game I played against the Marlins, its worth repeating.

We played a game that went 14 innings with both teams making one hell of a defensive play after another. Robbing base hits to keep the game tied, both Tavares and Bader made jumping catches against the wall, slick fielding at the corners...it was just beautiful to watch.

I wish I would've thought more to save these plays, but honestly being caught up in the tense moments of the game and either being pumped by my team making the play or dejected when the Marlins did, I didn't think to save them.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Not a “first impression “ but I just had a very unrealistic trade in franchise. The Yankees currently in first place in early May traded both Paxton and Gary Sanchez to the Rockies for Brendan Rodgers.

Wish I had set up 30 team control for that one.

Re: MLB The Show 19 First Impressions Thread (IMPRESSIONS ONLY)

In the midst of playing all 162, dog days of summer hit me pretty hard - wasn’t having much fun, just going through the motions, just straight muscle-memory for weeks at a time, ho-freaking-hum, 12 games out of first, bleh.

Then something amazing happens - I rip off five straight, ok whatever. But now I return home for a 7-game stretch against division opponents, both teams ahead of me in the standings. Less than 60 games left, this is it, last chance to make a real push. So I ratchet up the focus and intensity, basically play how i think we all do when the game first comes out and slip out of the boring monotony.

And what do you know, play three of the most exciting & enjoyable games of the year, get excellent pitching and stellar clutch hitting and sweep the series. Have now won 8 straight and will face KC for four games at home, a series where if I take all four will cut their lead over me in half and land me a 12-game winning streak.

Suddenly yet totally predictably I’m locked back in and thinking this game is pretty gd amazing.

Wow, I’ve never seen her in real life, so I just assumed she was one of those homely ex-athletes who got a job as a sideline reporter based on her athletic experience.
After reading your post, I looked up an image of her and you’re right! She’s beautiful.
Her rendering by SCEA was an absolute travesty. No two ways about it.
I’m not a visually-oriented person at all, but SCEA’s virtual Heidi Watney makes my amateur job of creating my own likeness in RTTS look like the masterwork of Michelangelo or Courbet.

So after a protest holdout over the lack of franchise progress but motivated by a deal which I was able to take advantage of, I purchased The Show 19.

                      OMG.

                      The lighting. The gameplay.

To hell with sleep, I'm set for a few days playing this....

Even though my hitting is terrible right now, having to get used to a lot more strategic contact hitting instead of every AB being a power swing is great fun.

Pitching - I'm still finding I can dominate a bit much on Hall of Fame, but I turned off the location marker in 18 and found it a lot more challenging so I can revert to that in 19 if necessary.

I do have one question. I've never imported a carryover save before. Currently I'm halfway through a spring training game. Can I import part-way through a game or do I need to finish it up first?

Yeah the trade engine is terrible. I can't tell you how many times ive seen trades that dont make sense. In one franchise I had the same player THREE TIMES in ONE offseason

Top of the 8th inning. 1-1 game. I am pitching. Bases loaded for the other team. Nobody out.

I throw a high fastball and the cpu decides to do a suicide squeeze which is absolutely insane and stupid. You can see where this is going of course. The batter pops it up (I have auto fielding) it falls between the pitcher and the catcher. Runner scores. Enranged, I sim the rest of the game and lose 3-2.

                            But seriously.

Suicide squeeze with the bases loaded and nobody out. It is so beyond stupid. Sigh. I love the game. But just ridiculous. Suicide squeeze with bases loaded. and nobody out. I keep repeating it because it just doesn't seem real. Oh well. Had to vent lol

Had a pretty insane game I had to share.

Legend pitch speed maxed. Yankees "Happ vs Verlander" and the Stros @ Yankee Stadium. Uhh. Bad idea. Verlander is absolutely ****ing ridiculous.

4th inning. 0-0 Josh Reddick smokes a pitch. It's going into the short porch for sure for a solo shot. All Rise! I time the jump just perfectly and Judge robs the sure HR.

5th inning. Verlander already has like 10 ks. I don't even have a freaking hit. I'm just hoping to God I can get a hit. Aaron Hicks steps up and times a rare mistake fastball for a second deck solo blast. **** yes....

Next inning Max Stassi takes Happ deep for a solo blast 1-1. Of course. Of all people.

I try to battle this freak Verlander. At least I have his pitch count up to 90+ in the 7th inning.. Gary Sanchez steps up with 2 Ks on the day. But, demolishes a low fastball for a solo blast. Got him again! Only my 3rd hit. But I'll take it. 2-1 Yankees.

Next inning. Happ is gone. He pitched damn well. Ottavino is in, walks Altuve. Then that little **** steals second. I'm in trouble. But he proceeds to get two quick outs. Just gotta get Brantley. 3-2 count. Man I should walk him. And face Stassi. Nah screw it. So he hits a slow groundball with eyes and scoots by Torres to tie the game. Comeback code! Jk.

Bottom 8th inning. Verlander is tired and I finally chase that monster out of the game. Will Harris relieves. Thank God. Anybody but him.

So I'm gonna destroy Harris right? He gets two quick outs. But I'm making solid contact. Gardner is due up. I've got Stanton on the bench. Guess who's pinch hitting? 2-1 count. I spit on his Harris's famous curve. Ain't getting me with that. Give daddy what he wants. Cutter up and in... Smash! Hr cam ensues. Timed perfectly and it's a bomb to left. Pinch hit Home run! Let's ****ing go!

                              3-2 Yanks lead.

Top 9. Chappy is in and he makes short work. three flyouts.

                              Yanks win!

Long *** post but had to share. That was a special game. I had 5 hits total. Three homeruns. Go figure. D.J had the other two. Both singles.

                                Note to self (to everyone)...

If you are tied,or have a lead, in the 8th or ninth, and there is a runner on third REGARDLESS OF ANY OTHER BASERUNNERS the CPU will squeeze. Period. End of story. Every time.

Throw the first two pitches to un-hittable locations, catch the ball, and tag the runner out. Yes it is cheesy. Yes it stinks to have to do this. But, alas.. it must be done.
