Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

I know I haven't posted as much in here so far this season, but plan on providing some updates soon. After playing around with some different modes (mostly MTO), I'm back in Franchise mode. I'll be resuming my 2021 Mets (carryover from MLB 18) franchise and have also committed to using the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2020 season.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Franchise Discussion Thread

Im 10 games into Spring Training with the Reds, and Im 3-7 so far. I plan on doing 2 Franchise's with my Reds, that is if we get baseball going IRL. I typically just do 1 Franchise where I follow all real life injuries and transactions, in my Franchise, but what usually happens is I get burnt out trying to control every transaction and injuries for all teams, on top of also playing several of my MILB teams games, along with trying to follow MILB as best I can as far as moves and injuries.

I figured with baseball season on hold, and who knows when, or if we will see baseball this yr, I decided, Im just going to treat my Franchise as a fictional one, and not bother with players who are injured currently IRL, and just let things play out, without being so OCD about having to keep things like real life in my Franchise.
I will still control all 30 teams, but Im letting the CPU control the other 29 teams, and I will only step in, if I seem something thats way off, that wouldnt happen IRL. But teams make stupid trades from time to time, so its mainly if I get to a point where there is way too many high overalls rotting in the FA pool, then I will step in, and add funds to teams, if their payrolls get too low, to where top players arent getting signed. I dont play RTTS or online, so I can always bump teams payrolls up, if this becomes a issue several yrs down the road, as some are saying. I just decided I would rather have budgets on, than off, in this Franchise.
If I decide to do a 2nd Franchise with the Reds, I may turn budgets off for it. Im just using Riddins OSFM rosters without any player editing in this Franchise. I might use 1 of the rerated rosters, that has pitch edits and equipment edits and do a 2nd Franchise. I actually think whoever does the roster ratings for SDS, has actually improved from what it use to be, as far as pitcher repretoires and movement. Im sure the pitch edit guys here at OS will improve upon it, but SDS has improved a lot in this area from what it use to be. I dont know if they changed the people who did the ratings, since I last played MLBTS in 17 or not, but its much improved from where it use to be.

Tough loss as Kimbrel blew his second save of the year. Ramon Urias absolutely killed me in the two-game series. He went 7-for-9, with 3 home runs and 3 RBI's. He's the leading vote-getter for the AL Rookie of the Year.

        JUNE 3, 2020 | CHICAGO, IL

Javier Baez cranked a two-run, go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth but Craig Kimbrel was unable to shut the door as the Orioles spit the two-game series at Wrigley Field Wednesday night with a narrow, 7-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Orioles rookie sensation Ramon Urias finished the game a perfect 5-for-5 including the go-ahead home run off of Kimbrel in the top of the ninth. Urias homered twice in the loss on Tuesday and is proving to be a likely candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year.

Kyle Hendricks allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out six but earned a no-decision. The Cubs trailed early as Hendricks allowed a pair of runs in the first. After falling behind 4-1 in the third the Cubs tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third and a two-run homer by David Bote in the bottom of the fourth.

Mychal Givens struck out the size for the Orioles in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 12th save of the year. The Kimbrel's blown save was only his second of the year as the hard-throwing veteran closer has converted on 15 of 17 opportunities in 2020. Despite the loss, the Cubs maintain their 1.5 game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central.

Thursday the Cubs begin a nine-game road trip. Jose Quintana (5-2, 3.75) will take the mound against the Reds who will send Sonny Gray (3-6, 4.48) to the bump. The Reds (32-30) currently sit in third place in the division behind the Cubs, who boast a 38-25 record.

          30 Team Franchise

          March 27, 2020

Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 0
Rafael Devers was 4 for 4 with 4 RBI’s and Nathan Eovaldi struck out 11 over 7 shutout innings. Tanner Roark lasted just 3.2 in his Jays debut.

          Twins 9, Athletics 7
Nelson Cruz hit 2 more homers, including the go-ahead shot off TJ McFarland in the 9th, and picked up 5 RBI’s. Trevor May notched the win in relief after blowing the save in the 8th.

          Rangers 2, Mariners 1
Willie Calhoun provided all the offense with a 3rd inning homer off Yusei Kikuchi. Jose Leclerc struck out the side in the 9th for his 2nd save.

          Angels 5, Astros 4
Dylan Bundy was a winner in his Angels debut despite allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Ohtani was the DH and was a triple short of hitting for the cycle.

          Phillies 5, Marlins 3
Jean Segura hit a 3-run jack in the 9th off Brandon Kintzler to seal a comeback win. Realmuto and Hoskins also homered for the Phils, and Zach Wheeler allowed a run over 7 IP in his Philly debut.

          Braves 7, Diamondbacks 6
Albies and Markakis each homered twice. Will Smith blew his first save chance as a Brave but A.J. Minter saved the day pitching a scoreless 11th and 12th inning for the W.

          Giants 4, Dodgers 2
Giants lit up Walker Buehler for 6 hits and 3 runs in 4.1 innings. Giants tallied 12 hits total including a Longoria homer and Pence triple. Real bad news for the Dodgers, as catcher Will Smith exited the game in the 7th after a collision on the basepaths. He’s been diagnosed with a broken arm and will miss 2-3 months.

          Rockies 10, Padres 3
This game wasn’t at Coors, but the Rockies still put up 15 hits including 4 from Daniel Murphy and 3 from Charlie Blackmon. German Marquez tallied 9 K’s over 8 innings for the win.

This has been really fun so far. I played as the Twins vs the A’s yesterday and as the Rangers vs the Mariners today. I need a better name. “30 Team Franchise” doesn’t have any ring to it.

Kyle Funkhouser and Brendan McKay named All-Stars

Starting pitcher Kyle Funkhouser and first baseman Brendan McKay have been named to the National League all-star roster. Both will be in Atlanta this Tuesday to partake in the mid-summer classic. This is Funkhouser's second time being an All-Star (2023) and McKay's first.

Kyle Funkhouser is 12-2 with a 2.67 ERA thus far in 2025. He leads the National League, and is tied for the major league, in wins. Funkhouser is bouncing back after a poor 2024 season to be the ace of the Cardinals staff this year and has helped lead his team to an 8 game lead in the Central Division at the break. Funkhouser likely will not pitch in the all-star game due to just taking the ball on Sunday against the Brewers.

Brendan McKay is hitting .297 with 20 homeruns and 55 RBI's thus far and is 2nd in the National League in homeruns hit. McKay got off to a slow start in March/April, but has turned it on since the last week of April til now. He has also done the work in the field committing no errors thus far in 2025. He will not be the starting first baseman in the game, as the Diamondbacks Pavin Smith beat him out of the honor.

Twins, Maeda Get Back on Track
Right Hander goes six strong in win

                April 24, 2020
Minneapolis--- Kenta Maeda went six strong innings, the offense came through, and the Minnesota bullpen secured a 5-1 win over visiting Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

Maeda (4-2) allowed five hits and one run over the six innings. He walked one and struck out six Sox batters.

“I felt good tonight,” commented Maeda through his interpreter. “My fastball had late life and I was able to bury my slider when I needed to.”

In a close 1-0 game in the fifth, the Twins finally were able to knock around Red Sox starter Mike Shawaryn (2-3). Scoring four runs without making an out, and knocking Shawaryn out of the game.

Jorge Polanco, Eddie Rosario, and Byron Buxton all had two-hit games, and Alex Avila and Josh Donaldson homered in the victory.

The Twins and Red Sox will come together again tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 1:10 PM. Jake Odorizzi (1-2, 2.40) will toe the rubber for Minnesota, and Nathan Eovaldi (3-1, 3.25) takes the ball for Boston.

I've hit the skids yet again, pitching is atrocious as it has been all year.

                          JUNE 5, 2020 | CINCINNATI, OH

The Chicago Cubs took a 3-1 lead against Anthony DeSclafani and the Reds in the top of the fifth but were unable to hold the lead as they lost their third straight contest. Alec Mills suffered the loss allowing three earned runs on two hits through 1 1/3 innings. The Cubs bullpen, which has been a sore spot all season has been responsible for the last four losses the Cubs have suffered and leaves major question marks as the team moves toward the All-Star break.

"We're all kind of looking for the right answers at this point," said Cubs first-year skipper David Ross. "It's never one guy and we win and lose as a team, so we've just got to figure out the right combination to use at the right time. Part of that falls on me."

Cubs starter Tyler Chatwood tossed just four innings, allowing one run in the no decision. Mills was masterful in his first inning in relief, striking out the side in order in the fifth but then ran into trouble in the sixth. Eugenio Suarez led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, his 14th of the year. And things snowballed from there. After the sixth the Cubs trailed 4-3 and one inning later they found themselves down 7-3.

The usually potent Cubs offense was held to just five hits and struck out a season-high 16 times in the loss.

The Cubs will turn to Yu Darvish (7-3, 4.95) to right the ship Saturday. The Reds will send Wade Miley (2-9, 3.86) to the bump. Despite the loss the Cubs still sit 1.0 game up on the second place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central division.

                            JUNE 6, 2020 | CINCINNATI, OH

The Chicago Cubs may have found the solution for their bullpen woes in 2020. Just score enough runs to the point where it doesn't matter. While obviously this plan isn't something that Cubs manager David Ross will be relying on, it didn't stop the Cubs from pounding out 15 runs on 19 hits against their division-rival Cincinnati Reds in a lopsided victory at Great American Ballpark Saturday afternoon. The 15-3 win ended the Cubs three game losing streak.

The Cubs did not take long to start scoring, as Albert Almora Jr. blasted the first pitch of the game into the left field stands off of Reds starter Wade Miley. Miley completed just two innings allowing seven earned runs on six hits en route to his 10th loss of the year. Yu Darvish was solid through five, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out seven. Darvish improved to 8-3 on the year.

David Bote finished the game 4-for-5 with three doubles and five RBI's while Steven Souza Jr. went 2-for-5 including a three-run homer in the top of the eighth.

Six homeruns combined by Sox and Twins

                              April 25, 2020
Minneapolis--- The Minnesota Twins got out a big five run lead after three innings and then the Boston Red Sox came storming back to tie the game in the top of the eighth, but Minnesota tacked on one more in the bottom of the eighth as they beat the Red Sox 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Neither starting pitcher was stellar, but neither figured in the decision either. Red sox starter, Nathan Eovaldi, was knocked out after giving up eight (3 earned) runs in just two and two-thirds innings. Twins starter Jake Odoirizzi was a little better, but was knocked out after five and one-third innings and allowed six runs.

Nelson Cruz plated two runs in the first with his seventh homerun of the year. Then the Twins exploded for six runs in the third, capped off by an Alex Avila grand slam. It was Avila’s fourth homerun of the season, and third in as many games, and the Twins had a comfortable 8-3 lead after just three innings.

The Red Sox came storming back in the sixth, scoring four runs, with the huge blow being a Jose Peraza three-run shot. They would tack on one more in the eighth to tie the game at 8-8.

A two-out Max Kepler infield single plated Luis Arraez in the bottom half, and Taylor Rogers would close the door in the ninth for his third save of the season.

The Red Sox and Twins will close out the series on Sunday afternoon. Sox lefty Daniel McGrath (2-1, 5.33) will get the start, while Minnesota will send righty Homer Bailey (5-0, 2.20) to mound to complete the sweep.

                                American League wins mid-summer classic

The American League toppled the National League 7-1 to win the 2025 All-Star Game in Atlanta. The AL put up a 4 run 3rd inning thanks to a 3 run homerun from Mookie Betts off a Garrett Whitlock, and the AL never looked back. They would score one in the 6th, and 2 more in the 7th to reach their 7 run total. The NL got their lone run in the bottom of the 8th when Francisco Lindor doubled home Brendan McKay.

Cardinals ready themselves for 2nd half of the season

The Cardinals (60-36) will look to extend their 8 game lead in the NL Central division as the 2nd half of the season gets underway Friday night. The Cardinals will host the Mets for a 3 game weekend series. The Cardinals are 7-3 over their last 10 and have been playing outstanding baseball since June 1st.

They continue to look over the trade market to see if anything peaks their interest in terms of bettering the team for the second half run. Bullpen and bench are two areas the Cardinals are looking to improve.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
