July was a good bounceback month for the Cubs. It saw the return of sluggers Anthony Rizzo and Miguel Sano. Sano had 8 RBI in his first 2 games back with 2HR. The Cubs had Kyle Hendricks and Aroldis Chapman as their representatives in the AS game.

During the break the Cubs realized they could use some boost in the lineup and acquired OF Mitch Haniger from the A’s for 3B prospect Christopher Morel. Haniger has a .282/17HR/42RBI at the All-Star break and hopes to be a consistent rental bat for the rest of the season.

Many teams were active at the deadline, with the biggest blockbuster being SP Chris Sale being shipped from BOS to SD.

The Cubs overall went 17-10 in July, with Rizzo and Sano proving to be a huge boost to the lineup that ranked in the back half of the league in most offensive categories. Cubs are 6 games up heading into August, and look to get through the dog days of summer in an even better position.
    Cubs sit at 61-46.

August is a month in the MLB season where teams can fall apart, luckily the Cubs did not fall apart, but they also did not gain much ground in the division. The Cubs finally healed up this month with OF/1B Gary Scruggs coming back. The rotation continues to push the team along, although they did take a slight dip in August, while the offense has begun to show some signs of life. The Cubs were not happy with the way the end of the month happened with the team losing 7 of 9 to close out August.

The Cubs still rank in the top 5 in most pitching categories, and the bullpen has also done its part to keep the team atop. The Cubs finally had enough of
Craig Kimbrel who was sent down in August with an ERA of 6.78. The Cubs called up young pitching prospect SP Bernard Nowak who was picked in the 1st round in 2021. He will get some experience out of the pen for the rest of the season, and can spot start if need be.

Kyle Schwarber has been an absolute stud in the middle of the lineup hitting .310/30HR/66 RBI’s. It has been a year of injuries and inconsistency from established hitters so far this season, and Schwarber has been one of the few players to stay consistent all season.

The division lead is not very comfortable heading into September, the Cubs sit in 1st in the NL Central up by 3 games over the Brewers, and 6 above the Pirates. September is shaping up yet again to be another big month for the Cubs as they look to wash away the memories of last season when they did not make the playoffs.

September was a successful month for the Cubs. No big late season injuries, and a monthly record of 15-12 kept the Brewers in 2nd place and gave the Cubs the division crown. This was a big moment for the Cubs, as they had missed the postseason last year for the first time since 2015. Management was thinking about undergoing a rebuild, and decided against it, the Cubs responded finishing the season 90-72.

The road to the World Series will not be an easy one for the Cubs, the journey starts in the NLDS where the Chicago Cubs will take on the young upstart San Diego Padres who ended up as the NL West champs by beating the Dodgers in the last game of the season.

The Tigers lost a heartbreaker to the Padres, 4-3. Jurickson Profar hit a solo homer off of Buck Farmer, which gave Kirby Yates all the run support he needed as he struck out 2 to give San Diego a chance to sweep Detroit at their home park.

Now in Mid May the Yankees sit at 31-13. In our latest stretch of games we took 2 of 3 @ Toronto, split a 2 game series with the Pirates, swept Boston out of the Bronx in 3 games, and split a 4 game series with the Rays 2-2. The Yankees looked to be headed for another series win after taking the first 2 games by scores of 1-0, and 5-2. But the Rays would storm back in the late innings back to back games off Britton then Chapman to stun the Yankees and force a split.

It wasn’t the sharpest debut for Deivi Garcia as he was knocked around by the Blue Jays for 5 runs over 4 innings. If there’s a bright spot, he did rack up 7 K’s along the way. He has since been optioned back to the minors to finish working on his craft.

Mike Ford continues to crush the ball, still hitting 316 / 409 / 882. Now up to 13 HR’s.

On 5/12, the Yankees announced a minor trade with the White Sox.
        Yankees Acquire: LF/DH Daniel Palka
White Sox Acquire: 2B prospect Josh Smith
The 27 year old Palka was a depth piece stashed in AA for the Sox who caught the Yankees interest. He’s expected to already have about reached his ceiling, and he doesn’t do much but hit HR’s and strikeout. Very slow and and plays LF and RF more for the sake of having actual positions then because he’s actually any good at it, but the Yankees liked his lefty power swing enough to bring him in on the cheap.

Mike Tauchman was optioned to the minors and with Frazier hitting an ugly 194 in his first 108 AB’s at Scranton, Palka will likely remain in the majors until Hicks returns.

But after game 4 @ the Rays the Yankees received terrible news...
It was determined that C Gary Sanchez broke his ankle as he came down awkwardly on it advancing a base in the middle of the game. He will be out 1-2 months.
Kyle Higashioka will take over as the starting catcher. Who takes over as the backup catcher? Still TBD, but the top options being considered are 38 year old Erik Kratz and 27 year old Kellin Deglan. Kratz has experience on his side, but Deglan might be slightly better at this point.

        Next up:
The Yankees head to Houston to face the hated 25-19 Astros for the first time since Altuve’s walkoff HR in last year’s ALCS. In game 1 young righty Clarke Schmidt who so far owns a 2.81 ERA through 16 IP faces his toughest test yet, taking on the Astros lineup and Justin Verlander. In game 2, Cole returns to Houston taking on former teammate Lance McCullers Jr. To close out the 3 game set, Paxton takes on Brad Peacock.
They may be down Springer and Correa but don’t be fooled, their lineup is still more then capable of putting up a lot of runs very quickly.

          JUNE 30, 2020 | CHICAGO, IL

Javier Baez continued to make his case for NL MVP Tuesday night as the Chicago Cubs dropped the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-3. Baez smacked his 26th homer in the bottom of the seventh as Yu Darvish earned his 10th win of the year in six innings of work. Baez finished the game with three RBIs.

Darvish improved to 10-3, completing six innings while allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven. The Brewers made things interesting in the top of the eighth when they plated a pair of runs but Craig Kimbrel shut the door in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 24th save of the year and secure the victory for the Cubs.

                Go Cubs Go!
                CUBS VS PADRES NLDS

                Game 1: Jose Berrios (15-11, 3.59ERA) VS Chris Paddack (13-7, 2.64ERA)

A classic pitching duel was the story of game 1. Berrios and Paddack were both doing their best to prove pitching wins in the playoffs. Paddack went 7IP and only gave up 1ER, while Berrios did just a tad better going 8IP and only giving up one run.

The lone runs scored were a triple by Paddack in the 6th where he was brough in by a single from OF Taylor Trammell. The Cubs answered back in the 7th with an opposite field HR from Kyle Schwarber to tie things up at 1-1.

The bullpens took over and dominated the game, as this game went to extras and was not decided until the 12th inning, when Anthony Rizzo led the inning off with a double. Sano sac flied Rizzo to 3rd, where Baez grounded to the SS which held Rizzo at 3B. Kyle Schwarber yet again delivered with a single that just barely got past the 2B which allowed Rizzo to score and the Cubs to win. It was a long and tiring game 1, but it was a hard fought win, and the Cubs lead the series 1-0.

                Game 2: Julio Urias (9-10, 3.82 ) VS Chris Sale (10-16, 4.20ERA)

Game 2 was almost an exact copy of game 1. Both pitchers cruised through 3 innings. The 4th the Padres got on the board first, just like game 1, with back to back doubles by Machado and Tatis that put SD up 1-0 through 4. The Cubs tied it up in the 5th with a Doug Paolucci solo HR off Chris Sale. The Cubs took the lead in the 7th with a Mitch Haniger single up the middle which scored Miguel Sano.

Urias went 6 strong, and the bullpen held strong through the 8th inning.
2-1 heading into the 9th. Same score as game 1. Rinse and repeat. Chapman gets 2 quick outs. Groundball to 2nd, easy play for Doug Paolucci and he throws to 1st for the…….WHAT HE OVERTHROWS RIZZO. Padres alive with a runner at 1st. CRACK, next pitch Taylor Trammel hits a blast to RF and somehow, someway the Padres are up 3-2. CRACK back to back jacks this one by Machado.

Cubs are in awe, and cant believe they let this slip away. Cubs muster nothing in the bottom half of the 9th and lose 4-2.

Series tied 1-1 going to San Diego.

                Game 3: Kyle Hendricks (15-10, 2.88ERA) VS Mackenzie Gore (13-7, 3.97ERA)

Game 3 was another wild one in this extremely close NLDS. The Cubs put up a 3 spot in the 1st, with HR’s from Sano and Haniger. The Cubs again put up a 3 spot in the 2nd thanks to a Adam Eaton double, and a Haniger double which scored 2 more runs.

Hendricks was dealing through 5IP having only given up 1 run. He gave up another 2 runs in the 6 and he should have been taken out there. 6-3 score heading into the bottom half of the 7th, the Cubs sent Hendricks back out there who gave up a 3-R-HR to Brian Dozier. This tied the game and again put the Cubs and their fans jaws on the ground with another collapse.
The 8th and 9th both had no offensive action, and yet again the game went to extras. The Cubs did not waste much time getting on the board. Cubs got the bases loaded with 0 outs, and a Henry Browning sac fly gave the Cubs the lead and the lone run of the inning.

Chapman makes his 3rd appearance in 3 games and was able to close this one out without any trouble and despite a huge scare in the middle of the game the Cubs were able to push through and win this one 7-6.

                Cubs lead the series 2-1.

                Game 4: Dinelson Lamet (10-10, 4.77ERA) VS Joey Lucchesi (10-11, 2.51ERA)

This game really brings back the history of the 2021 trade between the Padres and Cubs. The Cubs sent OF Ian Happ to the Padres who currently is the cleanup hitter for the NL West Champs, while Dinelson Lamet has a chance to knock off the team he used to pitch for. Both in contract years, the success of the trade can be measured after this season.

Lamet won this round, and in incredible fashion. Despite an up and down regular season, Lamet saved his best performance for an elimation game in the postseason as he threw a complete game shutout against his former club. 9 SO and only 4 hits allowed. The Cubs only had 7 hits, but it was more than enough as Sano hit a 2-r HR and Scruggs also added 2RBi to result in a final score of 4-0 and an overall 3-1 series win.

The Cubs move on to the NLCS, while the young Padres look like a team that could dominate the West for the coming years. The Cubs will take on division rival Milwaukee Brewers (87-75) who defeated the 99 win Braves in 5 games.

                Cubs win series 3-1

Splitting a 4 game with the pesky Reds!

Game 2: SP Soroka vs Al. Wood. These two starter's pitched their butts off. Wood 6.0IP,2H,1R,1ER,2BB & 5K and Soroka was a little better: 7.0IP,H,0R,0ER,0BB & 2K. We had a 1-0 lead, a slim one at that, no room for error. Well CP Kimbrel blew the SV OP(3), by giving up 3 runs. We lost 4-3!

Game 3: They jumped my Ace SP Fried. He gave up 3 runs in the top of the 1st. We answered back Btm of the 2nd, by OF Alex Gordon 2R HR. The young gun's Pitching match-up took over; Reds SP Castillo was filthy: 6.0IP,4H,2R,2ER,2BB & 9K. SP Fried settled and went 6IP, but gave up 4ER. SP Castillo won this battle. We lost 4-2!

Game 4: SP Teheran vs. SP Roark. Teheran went 7.0IP strong. He didn't yield his only runs of the game until the top of the 7th. I discovered that he'll be my SP if we to win the WC game. He is now 16-4 after this win, moved into 3rd place of the CY Young voting and I personally just pitch so well with him. ACuna Jr. hit his 24th(HR) & RBI(70) of the season and OF Alex Gordon went 2 for 4,2H,2B & 2RBI. We won 5-2!

Our record sit @66-48,1.0GB behind the Mets for the East and 2.0 games up in the WC.
OF Gordon has been a good addition. His defensive attributes are as advertised(Gold Glover) and no misplays in the OF! So anything at the dish has been a plus.

Hitting the road for 7 games, 3 vs.the Twins & 4 in Miami!

A Trip Around the League: MightyMaxxx13’s COVID-free MLB 2020 Season Simulation

                        April 6, 2020

                        Red Sox 10, Rays 1
Eduardo Rodriguez has been dominant to start the season, this time going the distance with 9 K’s and just 2 hits allowed. He is 3-0 with a 1.12 ERA over 24.0 IP in 3 starts. Brendan McKay was pounded in this one, recording just 4 outs and allowing 7 runs. Rays have dropped 4 in a row after starting 6-0.

                        Yankees 6, Orioles 3
Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier homered, and Giancarlo Stanton tallied 3 knocks. Rookie righthander Michael King notched his first major league win, with 2.2 scoreless innings pitched in relief of Jonathan Loaisiga.

                        White Sox 5, Mariners 4
Sox tied it in the bottom of the 9th off Matt Magill then won it in the 10th on a walkoff RBI single from Yasmani Grandal. Carson Fulmer earned the win out of the pen. Win #1 continues to elude the hapless Mariners who are 0-11.

                        Royals 12, Tigers 1
Royals have now won 6 in a row. This one was a blowout led by Alex Gordon, who tallied 4 hits including a homer and a double, and a whopping 6 RBI’s. Ryan McBroom also hit a 3-run shot and Mike Montgomery earned the win.

                        Twins 5, Indians 2
Twinkies scored 3 in the bottom of the 7th to break the 2-2 tie, then Trevor May and Taylor Rogers brought it home. Twins are a solid 8-3 while Cleveland falls to 4-7.

                        Athletics 6, Angels 5
Angels bullpen blows another one as they’ve dropped 6 straight. A’s scored 3 in the 8th off Ty Buttrey and Hansel Robles to tie it then Matt Chapman would hit the go-ahead solo homer in the 11th off Keynan Middleton. Phillies 1, Blue Jays 0
Aaron Nola pitched 8.1 and also drove in the only run for the win. Hyun Jin Ryu was pretty good in the losing effort, striking out 8 over 6.1.

                        Reds 6, Brewers 4
Reds scored the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the 8th on a 2-run shot from Nick Castellanos off of Brent Suter. Shogo Akiyama was 3-5 with 3 RBI’s as well. Raisel Iglesias recorded the save but was feeling some discomfort after the game. X-rays revealed a fracture in his right forearm and he will miss significant time.

                        Cubs 5, Pirates 1
15 total hits in this game, all of them singles. Albert Almora and Ian Happ each drove in 2 runs and Colin Rea earned the win in relief of Tyler Chatwood. Pirates rookie pitcher JT Brubaker was making his second MLB start and broke a bone in his hand while running the bases.

                        Cardinals 10, Dodgers 3
Cody Belinger hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 1st and it was all Redbirds from there. Dexter Fowler and Paul DeJong homered and the Cards hung 7 runs on Dustin May in 3 IP. Kwang-hyun Kim moves to 2-0.

                        Diamondbacks 5, Giants 0
Madison Bumgarner made his return to Oracle Park and put on a show, pitching a complete-game 1-hitter. He also drove in a run to help his own cause.

                        LEAGUE TRANSACTIONS

Indians sign two-way Cuban stud Oscar Colas to a minor league contract. The 21-year old LHP / outfielder was considered one of the biggest international prospects and recently played in Japan after defecting from Cuba. He will report to AA Akron where the Indians will attempt to develop him as a future two-way star in the mold of Shohei Ohtani.

Reds place RHP Raisel Iglesias on the 60-day IL with a forearm fracture. Iglesias recorded his 100th career save earlier in the night and was expected to anchor the bullpen for a Reds team that could be a contender this year. He will be out until June, at the earliest. Reds recall RHP Tyler Mahle from AAA Louisville and have named LHP Amir Garrett as the interim closer.

Pirates place RHP JT Brubaker on the 15-day IL with a broken hand and recall RHP Chad Kuhl from AAA Indianapolis. Kuhl hasn’t pitched since 2018 after undergoing Tommy John Surgery.

I’ve lost 3 of my last 4 to fall to 9-10 on the year. My starting pitching stinks, my hitting stinks and the injury bug has hit me hard. In the last 2 days, I’ve lost Beeks, Chirinos, McKay and 2 MiLB players to the 10-15 day DL and Yarbrough and Doxakis (prospect MiLB pitcher) to 60 day DL.

Nothing is going right and now I’m starting to push at the plate which makes it worse. I feel like my organization needs a reset.

Trying to determine if I call another bat up to MLB level to be a bench bat to replace Meadows or another arm and go with an opener and short stints to leverage bullpen.

                            Padres sweep the Tigers

Well, the Tigers were swept when that dropped the last game to the Padres, 7-3.
Manny Machado lead the charge with a Home Run and 3 RBI. Dinelson Lamet pitched 6 2/3 for San Diego, while Daniel Norris struggled, as he gave up 3 homers. Luis Perdermo notched his first save of the Season. The Tigers fall to 11-18, and are preparing to face the Yankees.

(Note: I have upped the difficulty of the game from All Star to now Hall of Fame)

                                Lots to get to today!!!

4 game series against the Giants (30-51).

Game 1 was a heartbreaking 1-0 walk off loss in the 10th inning to the Giants.

deGrom pitched 7 shutout innings for 8 SO's but couldn't get any run support as his RA moves down to 1.98.

Smyly of the Giants went 7 innings and 3 hits as well for 8 strikeouts.

The Mets only had 4 hits compared to the Giants 11 as Soria took the loss.
                                ---

The Mets GM was FURIOUS after the game and made some moves.

Nelson Cruz of the Twins was traded to the Mets for 2B Robinson Cano. Nelson Cruz is on a 1 year deal and will take a bench role with the team, but his morale is still up. This was a move to garner bench depth and get rid of Cano's contract.

The next major move was trading Mets 3B Miguel Andujar and 3B Alfonso Osuna (FA signing) BACK to the Yankees for 3B potential All Star Gio Urshela.

This is a HUGE move for the Mets and a very head-scratching move for the Yankees. Gio now slides in as an everyday 3rd baseman and a potential franchise player for the Mets and provides some major hitting help.

                                ---
Game 2: In a reversal of game 1, the Mets won 4-2 in 10 innings with Yusmeiro Petit (1-0) taking the win. After an early Pete Alonso 2 run HR in the 1st, the Giants Flores hit a 2 run HR in the 7th and it was scoreless till the 10th, when RBI's by Cespedes and Nunez won it for the Mets.
                                ---
Game 3: The Mets lost another frustrating game 6-1 against the Giants. Lance Lynn went 5 innings and gave up 2 runs on 10 SO's for the loss (8-6). After an early 2 run HR by the Giants Duggar, the Giants held on for the rest of the game including a 4 run inning in the 8th off Betances.

The only Mets RBI was from Rosario as Cueto (4-8) went 6 innings and 8 SO's with 1 ER for the win.
                                ---

The Mets GM continued to make moves after another bad loss against a bad team.

It appears the Yankees and Mets GM's have a strong relationship as the Mets traded CF Jake Marisnick and prospect SS Andres Gimenez for SS Niko Goodrum. Niko will be in a platoon role playing the outfield on occasion in place of struggling Yasiel Puig.

The Yankees and Mets could be in for some magic later as they currently have the best records in both the AL and NL.

                                ---
game 4: The Mets tied up the series 2-2 as they win 5-2 off a strong start from Corey Kluber (7-1). He pitched 6 innings for 1 ER off 5 SO's. Other than a 5th inning scare when Kluber got out of a bases loaded w no outs situation, it was a strong outing again for Kluber. Hopefully his salary is not a major issue in FA.

Michael Conforto hit a 2 run HR (26) to take an early lead in the 3rd. Bench player Matt Adams hit a solo HR (6) in the 6th to make it 3-0. But after a 2 run HR by the Giants Belt in the 7th, Pete Alonso came off the bench to hit a 2 run HR to seal it for the Mets.

Alonso now has a league leading 37 HR's and whispers are starting to grow about his chances at making history this season. He currently leads the NL MVP voting race.

In other news, newcomer Urshela had 4 hits a strong start to his Mets career.

Seth Lugo picked up his 23rd save of the season.

                                ---
The Mets now stand at 58-23 as the ASB nears with a big series against the Padres (48-33) coming up away. They are 10 games ahead of the 2nd place Braves.
