A Trip Around the League: MightyMaxxx13’s COVID-free MLB 2020 Season Simulation

    April 2, 2020

Red Sox 8, White Sox 7
Thrilling home opener at Fenway. Sox were down 6-0 going into the 8th before finally breaking through against Dallas Keuchel for a 5 spot. They’d score again in the 9th to tie it, then walk it off in the 10th with a Devers homer off of Jimmy Cordero.

    Blue Jays 7, Yankees 2
Jays battered Tanaka and knocked him out in the 3rd. Yanks couldn’t climb out of the hole as Wilmer Font shut them out over 3.1 for a 10-out save. Yanks offense is really struggling without Judge. They’ve dropped 4 in a row and only scored 4 total runs in those games. Gary Sanchez is batting under .100.

    Tigers 4, Indians 3
After Joe Jimenez blew the save in the 8th, Austin Romine would hit a walkoff single in the 12th off of James Hoyt. Christin Stewart homered twice. Aaron Civale pitched well for Cleveland but didn’t factor in the decision.

    Royals 5, Mariners 4
Royals have won 3 in a row and Mariners have yet to win at all (0-8). Danny Duffy struck out 8 over 6 innings for the win and 3 shutout innings from the pen would seal it. Rookie Evan White homered for the second straight day for Seattle.

    Athletics 8, Twins 0
Mike Fiers went the distance, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 7. Kenta Maeda wasn’t sharp, allowing 5 runs over 5 IP for the loss.

    Rangers 8, Angels 0
Mike Minor pitched 7 shutout innings and Shin-Soo Choo hit a grand slam. Rangers are off to a nice 6-1 start.

    Mets 3, Nationals 1
Yasiel Puig, Michael Conforto, and Jeff McNeil hit solo shots to account for the scoring. Marcus Stroman pitched 7 innings for the win and Edwin Diaz pitched a scoreless 9th for his first save.

    Brewers 2, Phillies 1
Jake Arrieta took a 1-0 shutout into the 9th then coughed it up with 2 outs. Brewers would win it in the top of the 10th on a walkoff single from Ryon Healy.

    Reds 14, Pirates 7
Pittsburgh fans were treated to some terrible pitching in their home opener. Trevor Williams was chased in the 3rd after allowing 3-run homers to Freddy Galvis and Mike Moustakas. Reds hit 5 total bombs and both teams had 18 hits. Trevor Bauer got the win, allowing 12 hits and 4 runs over 5.1.

    Cardinals 2, Orioles 1
Alex Cobb and Carlos Martinez both pitched well in this one. Goldschmidt homered for the second consecutive game.

    LEAGUE TRANSACTIONS

Giants option RHP Shaun Anderson to AAA Sacramento and recall LHP Andrew Suarez. Anderson had allowed 9 runs while recording just 3 outs in 3 appearances out of the pen.

Giants also signed RHP Danny Salazar to a 2-year minor league contract. Salazar has made just one appearance since 2017 due to various shoulder ailments. He is supposedly healthy and will report to AA Richmond to prove it and try to get back to the majors.

Red Sox have purchased the contract of LHP Ryan Feierabend from the Uni-President Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

Brock Holt to the 10-day IL with a shoulder strain. Brewers recall OF Ben Gamel from AAA San Antonio to take his place.

Mets vs Cardinals game 1 of 3.

After being recently traded, the debut of Corey Kluber (4-1) was nothing short of fantastic. A complete game shutout in 105 pitches, 9 SO's and 5 hits. 5-0 Mets for their 5th straight win and now 10 games ahead of the 2nd place Braves.

Michael Conforto hit 2 HR's and Pete Alonso hit 1 as well.

Mets jumped out to an early lead in the first off a Pete Alonso HR (29), followed in the 2nd and 4th with two Michael Conforto HR's (19).

3 strike outs on former Met 3B J.D Davis (traded). the Cardinals could not get anything going and their pticher Carlos Martinez took the L with 4 innings and 5 ER (3-6).

Pete Alonso is 2nd in the league in HR's (29) behind Christian Yellich (33) where they are also both neck and neck for MVP and the Hank Aaron Award in the NL with Yellich leading in both.

The Mets improve to 19-16 at home.

        Mets: 47-19.
        Cardinals: 31-36.

        ---
Shocking how awful the Cardinals bullpen is with only one player SU man Andrew Miller above an 80 and 4 Reliever's in the 60's.

Any work around for the player fatigue issue? I feel like I can never have my true starting lineup out there as someone is always fatigued.

Have you went into editing each player durability accordingly. SDS lowers a player durability if he was injured in real life the previous year. He might have a track record of playing 150 games and missed 140 games in 2019 due to an injury. Just a shot in the dark.

Cardinals acquire Tyler Jay from Twins

With the trade deadline looming the Cardinals made their only deadline move on the last day acquiring LHP Tyler Jay from the Twins.

              Cardinals get:

              LHP Tyler Jay

              Twins get:

              SS/IF Jeter Downs - 25 years old
OF Johny Kuhn (Top 50 Prospect - 19 years old)

Tyler Jay will join a bullpen that has been good for the most part this season, but has struggled at times, primarily of late, and Pedro Baez being one of those who is struggling. Baez will be the odd man out as he was placed on optional assignment waivers as the Cardinals attempt to move him to Memphis.

Jay will join the Cardinals in San Francisco as they begin a 3 game series with the Giants to kick off the month of August.

I don’t think this is unrealistic. Only 5 guys played 162 in 2019, and 4 of them were on AL teams where guys can get a partial off-day by DH’ing. There was another thread where this came up and someone dug up a stat that showed no teams used the same exact lineup more than 20-something times over the course of the entire season.

If you’re concerned about load management without sitting guys for an entire day, you can sub in your bench guys in the late innings of games that aren’t close. It keeps them having semi-regular at-bats and at least mitigates the loss of energy on your starters.

The Rays move to 4-3 after a 1-0 game against the Rangers. Each team had 2 hits, that’s it. The lone run for the Rays came off a 4th inning Jose Martinez solo HR.

Blake Snell pitched 7 innings giving up only 1 hit and Nick Anderson locked down the save.

It’s been win one lose one all year so far. Need to seeing some wins together.

Also, if you follow my dynasty thread, you know that I suck at hitting. I struck out 19 times in this game. I’m the worst.

I tend to take a lot of first pitches for the first 9 batters and get very aggressive in 2-1 counts. Also after walks/runners on, the first pitch for me is usually the best pitch of at bats unless it's a 3-2 count.

                        April 3, 2020

                        Tigers 7, Indians 3
Daniel Norris allowed just a run and 3 hits over 6 IP while striking out 5 for the win. Jordy Mercer and Jonathan Schoop homered for the Tigers.

                        Astros 6, Angels 3
Stros touched up Andrew Heaney for 9 hits and 4 runs, finishing with 14 hits total. Roberto Osuna would allow the tying run to come to the plate in the 9th but escape the jam for his 4th save. Brad Peacock pitched 6 innings for the win.

                        Rangers 7, Rays 6
Rangers finally hand the Rays their first loss in a wild game. Blake Snell took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th where he would load the bases and stick around long enough to give up a grand slam to Rougned Odor. 5 runs total in the inning. Rays score 4 of their own in the 8th off of Nick Goody to tie it at 5, then they’d take a 6-5 lead in the 9th. Nick Anderson would come on for the save but put 2 runners on before giving up a walk-off 2-run double to Nick Solak. Through the first week of the season these 2 teams have the best records in baseball with just one loss each.

                        Marlins 7, Braves 5
Marlins hammered Max Fried with 6 early runs and made it stand up. Miguel Rojas, Corey Dickerson, and Harold Ramirez all homered and Jordan Yamamoto added an RBI single to go along with his W.

                        Diamondbacks 2, Cubs 1
A 2-run double from David Peralta was enough to win this one as the Cubs were shut down by Merrill Kelly, who allowed just 3 hits and struck out 8 over 8 shutout innings. Archie Bradley surrendered a run in the 9th and had to be rescued by Yoan Lopez, who recorded the save. Yu Darvish pitched well in defeat.

                        Rockies 5, Padres 4
Rockies win their third in a row behind 3 hits from Arenado and a homer by Ian Desmond. Kyle Freeland allowed 3 runs over 7 innings for the win and Joey Lucchesi took the loss.

                        Giants 8, Dodgers 5
Brandon Belt broke out of a slump with 3 hits, including a 3-run homer. Johnny Cueto was dominant, taking a shutout into the 8th for his second win. Dodgers tacked on a few runs in the 9th against the mop up guys but it wasn’t enough. Walker Buehler allowed 5 runs in just 4 innings for his second loss.

Mets are looking like a train that is not stopping anytime soon! 6-2 against the Cardinals to take game 2 of the series.

Andrew Heaney (6-2) pitched 6 and 1/3 for 7 SO's and 1 ER. Mike Mikolas (4-7) went 5 innings for the loss after giving up 3 HR's for 3 ER.

Rosario and McNeil hit leadoff back to back HR's to start the game 2-0.

                          Yoenis Cespedes hit 2 HR's for 3 RBI's in innings 3 and 7.

Conforto is 5th in the NL for HR's at 19, and Cespedes is tied for 6th in the NL with 17.

Things got dicey in the 7th, but the Mets ended up using 3 reliever's to win it and lead throughout.

JD Davis of the Cardinals continues to struggle against his former team with another 0 for 4 game.

                          --
The team is currently clicking on all cylinders, and their early home woes appear to be going.

They have one more game to complete the sweep against the Cardinals before a critical 3 game series against the Nationals.

Mets: 48-19 (10 games ahead of the 2nd place Braves)

A rundown of the Mets notable trades this season starting from most recent:

SP's Corey Kluber and Lance Lynn of the Rangers for SP Marcus Stroman, SP Jordan Balazovic (FA) and RP Corey Taylor

SP Andrew Heaney of the Angels for SP Steven Matz C Tomas Nido and CP Stephen Villines.

RP's Yusmeiro Petit and Joakim Soria of the Athletics for 2b Jed Lowrie, RP Justin Wilson and RP Jeurys Familia.

CP Giovanny Gallegos from the Cardinals for 3B JD Davis

3B Miguel Andujar and RP Jonathan Holder from te Yankees for SS Ronny Mauricico SS Cody Bohanek.

                            ---
In retrospect the only head scratching move is for Andujar who started hot but has since cooled down and is now in a platoon role and is very unhappy. Keeping Ronny was probably the smarter option but at that point I was not happy w JD Davis and McNeil was injured for 1.5 months. May look to trade Andujar near the deadline since he's an unhappy upcoming FA although he does provide good depth.

The Rays were no hit in their last game against the Rangers. (I’m awful).

Then came Boston in the game that Chirinis would’ve started. I made my roster moves and........

                              Rays get smoked by Boston

The Rays fell to .500 on the season thanks to an 8-1 beating by the Red Sox. Trevor Richards who was called up made the start. Let’s just say it didn’t go well. On his first pitch, Benintendi pulled one down by the Pesky Pole for a homer in and a lead that was never in question.

Richards have up 7 runs, all on homers. The Rays, as usual, couldn’t hit. They got 2 hits off Sale to open the game and then managed two more over the next 8 innings. And yes, they struck out. A lot.

The lone bright spot (?) was Mike Zunino got his first hit if the year after 31 plate appearances. It was a split home run off Sale in the 5th.

The Rays have two more at Fenway to wrap up the series.

                                Cardinals sweep Cubs in St.Louis

The Cardinals (71-40) swept their rivals the Cubs in a series at Busch Stadium in St.Louis over the weekend. The sweep included a pair of shutouts along with a walkoff.

Game 1 (1-0): The Cardinals got a dominant pitching performance from Jack Flaherty who would survive 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball before being removed for Tyler Jay. Flaherty would get the win (9-8) thanks to Kolten Wong's solo homerun in the 5th inning. The Cardinals would only get the one hit, compared to 9 by the Cubs but would still win the game 1-0 to start the series. Greg Holland would record his 24th save of the season.

Game 2 (5-4): This time the bats were louder but the Cubs put up runs as well. The Cardinals led 4-0 after 4 innings, but the wheels came off for starter Junior Fernandez in the 5th as he would give up 3 runs before being removed for the bullpen. The Cardinals would hold a 4-3 lead going into the 8th only to watch Zack Burdi blow the lead and give up the tying run on a RBI double by Alex Bregmann. Greg Holland would come on in the 9th with 2 outs to replace Tyler Jay and record the 3rd out by striking out Mark Zunigas with 2 on and 2 out. The bottom of the 9th would see Jo Adell deliver a walkoff single scoring Harrison Bader from 2nd to win the game.

Game 3 (3-0): Once again the pitching of the Cardinals would be on display as Kyle Funkhouser would bounce back from his poor start against the Giants to pitch a complete game, 1 hit shutout. Funkhouser had a perfect game until the 7th when Andres Gimenez would single to right. Funkhouser ended up with 6 strikeouts. The Cardinals would get 3 runs, with the first being a sac fly by Funkhouser. Brendan McKay and Jo Adell would deliver back to back RBI doubles in the 7th to secure the win.

The Cardinals will remain home for the next week as they host the Pirates starting Monday for 3 games before the Rockies come to town for a 4 game weekend series. The Cardinals will look to expand on their 10 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Brewers.
