Veteran leaves in third inning

Minneapolis--- The Kansas City Royals scored early, knocking Twins’ starter Jake Odorizzi out in the third inning, and the Royals shaky bullpen did just enough to stave off a Minnesota comeback in winning 6-4 on Friday evening.
The Royals scored two in the first, one in the second, and two more in the third inning to lead 5-1 after three innings. Their 13-hit attack was led by Nicky Lopez, Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon, who all contributed three hits apiece. Perez drove in three runs, including his sixth homerun of the season.
Odorizzi (1-3) was never in control, as he pitched with runners on for most of his two and two-thirds innings. He allowed six hits and five runs (three earned) with three walks and three strikeouts.
“That was a junk start,” stated Odorizzi in a postgame conference. “Our team has been rolling and then I go out there and throw a clunker. My bad!”
The Twins tried staging a comeback but Nelson Cruz was thrown out at the plate in the eighth, and Scott Barlow closed the door in the ninth for his second save for Kansas City.
Minnesota will host Kansas City again for game two tomorrow night. Homer Bailey (5-1, 3.35) will try again for his sixth win, while the Royals will send out right hander Jakob Junis (5-2, 3.45), who is also looking for win number six. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM.
