Re: MLB the Show 21 Impressions Thread

Graphically, the PS5 game isn't really an upgrade on the PS4 in a lot of areas. In the first game I played, I noticed the hills and trees behind Dodger Stadum (and other stadiums with hills beyond the outfield) are still PS3-level polygons, and the players mouths and facial expressions are early PS4-creepiness. The uniforms haven't improved, the grass maybe improved by 1/100 points...though they do a great job with the crowds.

I found it weird that when I played a game in Anaheim, the announcer announced #27 as "Mark Trout" though Matty V has him as Mike Trout.

And it's annoying that the announcer says:

    Mark

    Trout.

There also seems to be a glitch in that Trout's stats and batting average doesn't show up above the pitcher's pitch count/stats (at least in the first AB) but every other hitter's did.

Hopefully this game improves the artwork tremendously in MLB 22.

I’ve been very hard on 21 so far in other threads, but here’s some positives from me.

As others have said, the game looks and plays just a bit better like you can pretty much expect from The Show every year. Beautiful looking game, very smooth. The presentation updates give things a fresh feel even though the commentary seems mostly the same.

It does seem like they made an effort to cover for the loss of SOTS. You have songs or a broadcast theme playing between innings, songs playing for batter walk ups. Obviously it doesn’t replace SOTS, but it’s honestly not tooooo bad. We still have music in the background to improve ballpark atmosphere. Crowd noise is definitely better.

I am a clean screen, pure sim player and I am IN LOVE with pin point. Don't be scared of the user element if you have not tried it. When you get that strikeout on a perfect pitch, it feels so DAMN good.

Truing to figure out the release. When exactly should i pull down on the stick? Wait for his wind up and pull down as he releases it

Funny how they gave us the option to turn off Heidi Watney's sideline reports rather than make them different and more engaging

Also an unscientific observation (in general, not specific to gaming) - people who dislike something are more likely to post about it than people who are enjoying themselves.

Does this mean everything is 100% liked? Of course not. But impressions based on 12 hours of availability aren't the most reliable gauge yet either. Definitely keep checking reviews and see how things shake out.

I struggled at first understanding it too. Then I realized you do it exactly as the diagram is doing it after you pick the pitch. Exact same speed as well.

so ill just use fastball. you go straight down then straight up and hold it up and line it up with that circle. Where the pitch finishes(where you aimed) a circle will appear that shrinks. You want to do a straight line motion to line up with that circle when the circle just gets the smallest. If you get to that circle before its shrunk you will throw it higher than you aimed(hanger) or too late after its shrunk it will be low(in the dirt). lining up the top circle and you gesture combined with timing will dictate how far off your mark you are. if the line is yellow you are gesturing to slow or fast. Red your way off speed wise. green means you are right on with gesture timing.

Watch the little demonstration after you pick the pitch and try to mimic it and you will figure it out.

the timing between the top circle and bottom circle varies depending on picture motion or if they are in a full wind up or the stretch which is also super cool as it adds variety between different pitchers. I really utilize the warm up pitcher feature now for the first time.

Been waiting a long time for The Show to incorporate gesture pitching. Its one of the few things 2k had over The Show and honestly its one of the only reasons why I haven't cancelled my pre-order yet.

I think it's supposed to correlate to the pitching motion, but I can't say for sure.

After you perform the pitching motion, watch the bottom circle. There's a rotating circle around it that begins closing in. Try to time the pull down so you hit it when the two circles overlap.

I thought this video covered it well: https://youtu.be/snRY7gcbAfA

Not sure if this is a place to ask a question, but I heard that during franchise now your prospects minor league stats now track on their playing card. Can anyone confirm that or show picture. See below crude example.

                        Wander Franco

Year - Level - Avg. HR RBI SB
                        2021 - ML - .275 9 19 7
                        2021 - AAA - .305 17 35 11

You won’t regret it. Pin point is THAT good. As much as I love ratings being the main factor.. classic pitching just became dull over the years and this just makes this game so fresh.

Playing the PS5 version. My first impression was that it didn’t look too much different than 20. But the more I play this the more I’m impressed with the next gen version. It’s definitely not a huge graphical leap, but it does look damn good imo.

The new animations definitely bring new life to fielding too. I’ve played 3 exhibition games and a few Moments thus far. Already... there’s no way I’d go back to 20 at this point. Can’t wait to try this on Series X as well.

Has anyone that's done a fair amount of simming already noticed any improvement re: CPU bullpen usage? In a given season do 50 rating long relievers still pitch 120 innings across 45 appearances? Do CPU teams still pick a couple favorite middle relievers to give 100 innings/appearances to, while elite setup men get maybe 30?

wasn't really thrilled with the Orioles catching prospect Adley having the highest overall of all the Baltimore catchers in 20, so I was glad to see even though they left him a 70 overall this year, they jumped Severino up to the highest rated overall catcher for the O's
