No, the game absolutely doesn't do it...

I actually just took pictures of all of the player cards, and did it myself when I had a bit of free time around the CPU. Tried to compare them to guys that are reasonably current. For instance, with my 1st pick, he looks like a decent strikeout/groundball-type guy, with a very strong splitter, so I'm thinking his ceiling might be Gausman-ish. Lentzkov (my second pick) is undersized, but has solid breaking stuff, and also looks like he should be able to keep the ball on the ground, so, because of the size, I went with Stroman. I don't think any of them are necessarily acurate, but @JWDixon's google sheet that I'm using has it under the "draft" tab, so I figured I might as well take a stab at them.

When it comes to quality from the draft, I don't know...I typically like to draft 18 year olds, because even though most of them have low overall's, they have plenty of time to develop. I haven't gone far enough in franchise's before to see how the 21/22 y/o low overall/high potential guys turn out, but I'd be surprised if they ever become more than borderline AAAA players.

For next season though, I'm thinking that I'll probably end up turning my scouting to "auto". I scouted the heck out of this draft class, and obviously it paid off really well, but I feel like it might be more realistic to let my scouts handle it.

I've noticed that the first year draft class is often a fair bit better than subsequent classes. I've definitely not seen the caliber of high-end draftees in subsequent years that I had in my first draft (and a couple of other guys I trade notes with on our respective franchises have had similar experiences).

I think you may find that doing your own scouting following year 1 may be something you'd like to do. If you feel it gives you a bit too much of an advantage; you can reduce your scout quality a bit.

        May 29-31: RIO RANCHO (27-29) @ FLAGSTAFF (38-18)
        Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,577)

        May 29: Hops 13, Owlz 11 (14)
        May 30: Hops 5, Owlz 3
        May 31: Hops 5, Owlz 3

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops got back on track as they returned home a swept Rio Rancho to open up their home stand. The opener set the tone as they rallied from a 9-0 deficit to win.

In the opener, the Hops set a couple of franchise records as they rallied for a 13-11 victory in 14 innings over the Rio Rancho Owlz. The Hops had their biggest comeback in franchise history (nine runs) and hit the most home runs in a single game (7).

Rio Rancho jumped out to a seemingly insurmountable 9-0 lead in the seventh and looked to be cruising to a win, but this Hops team had other plans. An Emmitt Hampton solo home run got things going in the bottom of the seventh.

The Hops then scored four in the eighth as Oscar Aleman, Arturo Madones and Emmitt Hampton hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to 9-5.

A Zack Gallagher home run in the top of the ninth appeared to seal it for the Owlz as they went up 10-5, but it was not to be. David Benitez hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to cut it to 10-6. Forrest Owen then hit a three-run home run to left to make it a one run game. Oscar Aleman followed that with a solo home run, his second of the game, to tie it at 10-10.

Ben Olsen would homer in the top of the 13th to put the Owlz back in front. But a David Benitez two-out RBI double would tie it up again. Then in the 14th, Oscar Aleman lined a one-out single to center and Arturo Mardones hit a hanging curveball from Ernie Jordan deep into the night to walk-it-off. It was Mardones second of the game and sent the home crowd home happy with the stunning victory.

Oscar Aleman (9,10), Emmitt Hampton (10,11) and Arturo Mardones (8,9) each homered twice for the Hops. The Owlz hit four home runs themselves but it was not enough. The teams combined for 24 runs, 35 hits and 11 home runs.

On Tuesday evening, the Hops got great pitching to take game two 5-3. Three pitchers combined to allow just four hits as the Hops have now taken the first two games on the series.

Flagstaff would grab a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Josh Ortega RBI single and Art Mason two-run home run.

The Owlz would tie it up in the third on an Eric Pressley three-run shot. It was his ninth on the season.

Alex Farmer left the game with an arm injury in the fifth. We went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Sam Varela (1-1) and Vic Miller got the final 14 outs without allowing a base runner.

Josh Ortega would hit a two-run home run in the fifth to put the Hops up 5-3. It was his 11th on the year and the Hops would never look back.

Homer Guevara (2-7) took the loss for Rio Rancho. He went five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits.

The injury to Alex Farmer was determined to just be soreness and he will miss a few days but is not expected to miss his next start.

In the finale, the Hops scored three runs in the first and never looked back as they completed the sweep with a 5-3 victory. Art Mason homered on the first pitch of the game and the Hops improved to (38-18).

Mason’s homer was his team leading 15th on the season. Robbie Westbrook added an RBI single and Donnie Roland an RBI double to make it 3-0. Emmitt Hampton homered to open the fourth. The solo shot was his 12th on the season.

Ben Olsen singled to left to drive in Ferreira in the fourth to get the Owlz on the scoreboard. Larkin would add a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

An Emmitt Hampton RBI single in the fifth put the Hops up 5-2. The Owlz would get one back in the eighth off of reliever Aldo Osuna, but they would get no closer.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying picked up the win to improve to (7-2). He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out six, but walked a season high four batters. Vic Miller pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two, to earn his 18th save in 20 tries.

The Hops will host Amarillo (28-29) in a four game series to close out the home stand beginning tomorrow evening.

Around the League: Darren McCarty homered twice and drove in four runs as Goodyear rallied late to defeated Phoenix 12-11 in a slugfest at Southwest Airlines Field in downtown Phoenix. Las Vegas’ Stanley Taguchi pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out 11 as the Nuggets blew past Long Beach 13-1. West Texas pounded out four home runs and 19 hits in an 18-6 victory to open their series in Prescott.

Albuquerque opened up their brand new JetBlue Park with a 9-6 victory over Colorado Springs. Hunter Hamilton went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to help lead the Mariachis to the victory.

Sam Morgan went 3 for 5, doubling, homering twice and driving in seven as the Javelinas took care of Salt Lake 16-6.

Steve Heupel went 3 for 5 with a double, home run (20) and five RBIs in Gilbert’s 8-5 victory over El Paso. The Blue Rocks stole five bases in the loss.

Fair enough. I just don't want to feel like I'm cheating the game by doing it.

I definitely enjoy the scouting aspect of it, because I'll typically spend a bit of time here and there just looking at prospects. I've definitely got plenty of time to decide though.

Definitely curious to see what the new draft stuff in '23 is going to be...I'm not currently planning on purchasing it, but if it deals with bonus pools and is longer than the current 6 round draft, it might be a good kick towards me purchasing the game.

            Thoughts:
-The Yankees are better than their record. Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon haven't been good enough, but if they get on a role, they'll be a hard team to beat, especially if they end up in the playoffs.
-The Guardians fell off after a solid April. They led their division by 3 games at that point.
-Sticking with the AL Central, the White Sox are missing both Lucas Giolito and Tim Anderson...they did sign Trevor Bauer, who has been (A piece of crap human) very solid for them though. They'll live and die based on how their rotation holds up.
-It won't surprise me if both wildcards come from the AL West. The Rangers have been very good, but they've lost a few games in a row which has them treading water. The idea of potentially facing them in a 5 game series scares me, as they took 2 of 3 earlier this year.
-The bajillion dollar Mets payroll has them pacing the NL East. Miami was actually hanging in there for a while, but they're fading pretty quickly.
-The NL Central race could end up being the one to follow. St Louis and Milwaukee are both talented, but the Brewers +60 (!!!) run differential likely means they're primed to start rolling here soon.
-The NL West is what it is. The Dodgers are outstanding, and the Padres are very, very good. San Diego looks like a lock to pick up a wildcard spot, and I'd bet that either the Brewers or Cards get the other one.

Edit: Oh man...the standings were all lined up and looked tight when I put them on there...big 'ol yikes to the final format.

Oh wow that's awesome that you do that. Honestly I have auto-scouting on, I just don't want to forget my scouting and then have nothing to go off of when the draft comes around. I'm always open to changing things, so if the next draft doesn't go that well I may just take over scouting too. We'll see.

                2023 Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals kicked off the 2023 campaign in Atlanta against the Braves, who are expected to be one of the best teams in all of baseball this year. MLB.com predicts them to finish 96-66, which would be the best record in the majors. Their pitching staff is loaded, as they added Aaron Nola and Jameson Taillon. Taillon, a would-be-starter in most rotations, is actually going to be coming out of the bullpen to start the season, as will former starter Huascar Ynoa. The Braves rotation will be Nola, 2022 Rookie of the Year Spencer Strider, Max Fried, Kyle Wright, and Mike Soroka. As for position players, Adam Duvall is the major loss for them, but he is replaced by Jake Marisnick in left. Jose Iglesias will bring some defense and bat-to-ball skills to the lineup. He will most likely be at DH with occasional starts at shortstop when Dansby Swanson needs a day off.

All told, this is a scary team, and have to be considered favorites to make a run deep into the Postseason.

Game 1: Stephen Strasburg vs Aaron Nola. What a way to start the season. The debut of Aaron Nola after the Braves took him from their division rival in free agency. The Nats would spoil the debut early, getting two in the first as Ildemaro Vargas and Joey Meneses would drive in a run each. Yadiel Hernandez would homer off Nola in the third to make it 4-0 Nationals, and they would never look back. Ozzie Albies would homer in the fifth and the Braves would manufacture a run in the ninth but the game was never that close. Strasburg would go seven innings, giving up a run on seven hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Aaron Nola would only go four innings, giving up four runs on five hits, no walks, and one strikeout. Not what Braves fans were hoping for to open the season.

Game 2: Mackenzie Gore vs Spencer Strider: The Nationals jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a Brandon Drury double, scoring Luis Garcia. And that was all for the Nats, as Spencer Strider would shut them down, going six innings, giving up a run on four hits, walking two and striking out 5. Mackenzie Gore started out strong, until the fifth inning where the Braves offense would awaken and they would drive in five runs. Michael Harris would drive in a run, Travis d’Arnaud and Matt Olson would hit their first home runs of the year, and Jake Marisnick would add two more to chase Gore from the game. Newly acquired Zach Eflin would get a three inning save as the Nationals offense was completely taken out of the game.

Game 3: Josiah Grey vs Max Fried: The Nationals got out to an early lead as Gleyber Torres hit his first home run of the season in the top of the second. Brady House would double in the sixth, and Enrique Hernandez would follow him with a double of his own to make it 2-0 Nats. Fried would get settled in and not allow another run until his departure in the seventh. Josiah Grey would carry a no-hitter until there were two outs in the sixth, when Ronald Acuna Jr. would hit a base hit up the middle. Dansby Swanson would follow with a home run off the left field foul pole to tie the game. Washington would counter when Keibert Ruiz doubled off the walk in right, scoring Lane Thomas. Victor Robles would hit a two run home run in the top of the ninth, and despite rocky outings by Aaron Bummer and Trevor Rosenthal, the Nats would hold on for a 5-3 win.

Game 4: Zach Davies vs Kyle Wright: This one started out as a pitcher’s duel, with both guys pitching to contact and neither offense able to score until the fourth. In the top of the fourth, Yadiel Hernandez would double, move to third on a Brandon Drury ground out, and score on a Joey Meneses double. The Nationals would score two more runs in the fifth, one on a sacrifice fly by Brady House and the other on a ground out by Brandon Nimmo. The scoring would continue in the sixth. The Braves would bring in Jameson Taillon, and Yadiel Hernandez would single, advance to second on a Brandon Drury ground out, and then advance to third on a wild pitch. He would score on a Joey Meneses ground out. The Braves would answer in the bottom of the sixth, when William Contreras would hit a double off of Collin Poche to drive in Orlando Arcia. The Braves would get two more runs in the seventh, when Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a two run moonshot to left off of Poche, making it 4-3. The Nats bullpen would hold, however, as Carl Edwards Jr, Aaron Bummer, and Trevor Rosenthal would keep the Braves off the board.

I must say I’m shocked that we were able to go 3-1 against this Braves team. The new acquisitions all helped in one way or another, and the team is already showing improvement over last year’s squad. The front office wasn’t sure what to do with Yadiel Hernandez, but after the departure of Luke Voit and the retirement of Nelson Cruz, he became the favorite for the everyday DH role, and so far he is filling it nicely.

The Nationals now travel to Miami for two games, before getting a day off to head home for a four game opening series against the Cubs, followed by three at home against Philadelphia.

Good luck this season ! will be following closely

Thanks! This franchise spreadsheet that I'm using can sometimes be a bit cumbersome if I fall behind, but I've just been taking a picture of my TV screen after a game, then updating from there. Helps me cherry pick the info I want to fire on here, and I find that typing out my thoughts helps me wade through what may or may not be realistic. Pretty much just a big mess of ramble-y thoughts

Regarding the draft, I *think* my success came mainly from scouting as many players 100% as I can. Basically what I've been doing is spending a day per area searching for what I deem to be important. I don't really bother searching for "Clutch" or whatever that attribute is for pitchers. For hitters, I always do "Contact" as the primary search, and then Power/Speed/Fielding for each position. Once I start doing individuals, if they're looking like they'll end up in the 60's when the bar hits "green", I'll just move on to another prospect.

The only guy that I drafted that I hadn't scouted at all, and turned out to be a major steal was my 3rd rounder (RHP-89 potential). He just had the things I was looking for, and when I looked at the rest of my scouted guys, they were all low-overall/high potential guys that I figured would fall.

                        June 1, 2023
Phoenix, AZ (AP) - The IBL held their First Year Player Draft on Thursday evening in Phoenix. It consisted of six rounds with the draft order determined by the final 2022 standings with Yuma selecting first overall and San Antonio selecting 30th. Compensatory picks were allocated after rounds one and two.

The top overall pick was 19-year-old right fielder Sammy Bautista out of New Jersey who played at Rutgers. He is only rated as a 49 OVR but has a big ceiling with a potential in the 90’s and is projected to reach the big league level maybe by 2027. Prescott selected 19-year-old starting pitcher Giuseppe Coronado out of the Dominican Republic. The 6’0”, 187 lb pitcher is rated 52 OVR with a 92 potential and has a five pitch repertoire featuring a 93 MPH four-seam fastball and a devastating curveball.

Mesa selected high school outfielder Milt Rios out of Columbus, Ohio. The 18-year-old is a speedster with 80 rated speed but will need to work on his craft at the minor league level. He is rated a 51 OVR with a potential of 94 with a big league debut still several seasons away.

Flagstaff selected 19th overall and once again had one of the best drafts. They selected starting pitcher Benedict Koo out of Taiwan in the first round. He had a dominant fastball in the upper 90’s to go along with a curve and slider. He is rated 70 OVR and has a potential in the low 70’s. The 19-year-old is still a few years away from making his big league debut.

The average overall potential of Flagstaff’s seven picks was 81.14 which led the IBL, just edging out Scottsdale. The Hops also lead all the teams in current overall of their draft picks with an average rating of 66.71.

Here is a look at the first round and breakdown of the potentials and overalls of each team’s draft. The number indicates their draft position.

                          2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals traveled to Miami for a quick two game series against the Marlins, who got off to a 2-1 start while facing the Phillies in their first series of the year. Miami had an okay year last year, finishing a few games under .500 despite having a very poor offense. They look to improve this year, having added Miguel Sano, Joey Bart, and Brandon Belt. It must be said that Sano and Belt are not as threatening as they were in past years, but should be able to help the Marlins this year. Unfortunately for Miami, the Mets, Phillies, and Braves are still light years ahead of them in the talent department, so they will most likely be finishing no higher than fourth in the division again this year.

Game 1: Cade Cavalli vs Pablo Lopez. The Nationals decided to give their number one pitching prospect the fifth starting spot to start the year. He showed some real promise in five starts last year, including a complete game shutout. He also showed that he is a work in progress, especially in his first few starts. The game got off to a slow start, as both pitchers really set the tone early. Cavalli would strike out four batters in a row before running into trouble in the bottom of the fourth. Jazz Chisholm would open the scoring with a solo shot to right. Miguel Sano would then double and score on a Jesus Sanchez single before Brandon Belt launched his first home run as a Marlin. Cavalli would end up going 4.1 innings, giving up 6 hits, four runs, a walk and 5 strikeouts. And that was it for this game, Pablo Lopez would go 7 innings, give up four hits, no runs, walk a batter and strike out five, and the bullpen would go two hitless innings to give the Marlins an easy 4-0 win.

Game 2: Stephen Strasburg vs Sixto Sanchez. The Marlins would get on the board first in this one when Brian Anderson and Jazz Chisholm hit back to back triples in the bottom of the first. The Nationals would answer in the top of the third by playing small ball. Brady House would lead the inning off with a walk, Brandon Nimmo would follow with a single, and Luis Garcia would then hit a ground rule double to score House. Yadiel Hernandez then singled to score Nimmo before Brandon Drury would bounce into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Garcia. Sixto Sanchez would be abruptly pulled after 4 ⅓ inning after giving up two base hits. His pitch count was getting high, but not drastically high so there is speculation about an injury. Strasburg would continue into the seventh without any further damage. His line reads as follows: 6.2IP, 5 hits, one run, 3 walks plus a hit batter (Jazz Chisholm, who was also hit yesterday), and 5Ks. The Nationals’ bullpen under Colin Poche and Trevor Rosenthal would go the last 2.1 innings and keep the Marlins from rallying. The game would end when Miguel Rojas was thrown out at third after attempting to run on a pitch in the dirt. A very questionable decision, as Jazz Chisholm was the batter and tying run, and he has beaten the Nationals already in this series. But, the Nats hold on for the win and series split.

The Nationals have moved to 4-2 on the year, and while it’s still way too early to make any kind of assumptions about this season, they have to be happy with how things are playing out. The rotation and bullpen already look much improved, and the lineup has shown real promise, although there have been some struggles. They could have, and maybe should have, scored more than three runs in their last game. They had 13 hits, but just could not string more of them together. Brandon Drury has not shown his power yet, and Luis Garcia hasn’t been the consistent contact hitter he was late last year. But, it’s early, so there’s no need to panic yet.

The Nationals now have an off day before going home for their Home Opener against the 2-4 Chicago Cubs.

                            Blue Jays Franchise: 2023

When you're the team with the best record in the majors, it's obvious that things are going well, but the Jays were struck a major blow on Tuesday night against the Royals, as the teams Ace, Kevin Gausman, would break his arm and is now out for the next 1-2 months.

At a time when the Jays rotation has started to struggle, Gausman has been a rock, consistently throwing 6+ innings per night. Consecutive short starts from Chris Bassitt, Nate Pearson and Jose Berrios, followed by by Gausman's short run have left the teams bullpen in shambles, and while everyone has stepped up, they need a break.

Fortunately, Alek Manoah takes the bump Wednesday for the Jays, which will *hopefully* go well. They need to get some length out of him before an off day Thursday.

                            Thoughts:
-This is only the second major injury for the team so far this year (George Springer should return within the next few weeks after breaking his wrist to start the month of May, so they've been very fortunate in that regard.
-Yusei Kikuchi would have been the logical player to call up, but the club DFA'd him last week so he's currently in limbo.
-Other options include LHP Ricky Tiedemann and Yosver Zulueta, as well as journeyman Zach Thompson. All three have pitched well in AAA to this point, but Tiedemann has only made 4 starts at that level so far. Another possible candidate is Hayden Juenger, who seems fringy at best.
-With Manoah starting today, and an off day tomorrow, it *might* give me the chance to re-jig my rotation enough to ease the pain for a week, in which case I could simply call up a reliever to at least get me through this series, then adjust moving forward.
-Hyun Jin Ryu has started a rehab assignment, and will return on July 1st. That gives the team 22 games to figure it out. While giving Zulueta or Thompson 3-4 starts isn't ideal, it might be enough of a bandaid to get the team through the month.
-Another issue here is that Nate Pearson has turned into a pumpkin over his past couple of starts. I know that he's destined for the bullpen at some point, but I don't even have the option of doing that yet given that my rotation depth has all but disappeared, following the ill-timed DFA of Yusei Kikuchi, and the lack of production/subsequent loss via waivers of Drew Hutchinson. Obviously I'll continue to scour the waiver wire, but I haven't managed to pick up a single player so far.
                            Edit:
-Mitch White is obviously still an option, but his ERA over 6 starts in AAA is actually worse than he was in the Majors, sitting at 6.30. So yes, an option, but certainly not a good one.

                              2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals come home to host the 2-4 Cubs in the Home Opener. The Cubs had some big signings of their own this offseason, acquiring Chris Bassitt, Taylor Rodgers and Archie Bradley as well as slugging first basemen Jesus Aguilar. They re-signed Willson Contreras for five years, and still have Ian Happ for one more year. It will be interesting to see if the pieces can come together for this team, if so, they can probably challenge for a Wild Card spot..but if not, it will be another disappointing season on the North Side.

Game 1: Marcus Stroman vs Mackenzie Gore The Cubbies got on the board in the first, as Jesus Aguilar would allow Seiya Suzuki to score from first on a ringing double to left center. The Nationals responded with five runs in the fourth. Luis Garcia and Yadiel Hernandez each singled, Brandon Drury drove in Garcia with a double, and Joey Meneses followed that with a two-run double. Gleyber Torres advanced Meneses to third with a single, and Lane Thomas drove him in with a bloop single to right. Torres would then score when Keibert Ruiz grounded into a double play. Jason Heyward would double in the top of the fifth and then score on a Nico Hoerner single, Mackenzie Gore would finish the inning and turn the game over to the bullpen, finishing with two runs on eight hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. The Nationals would get three more runs in the eighth from a bizarre play that saw Brandon Drury hit a rocket double to left center that was hit too hard to score more than one run, but when Luis Garcia had to retreat back to third, Willson Contreras airmailed the pick off attempt and the ball ended up in no man’s land allowing both Garcia and Drury to score. Victor Arano pitched two shutout innings and Kyle Finnegan had a cakewalk in the ninth, giving the Nats an easy 8-2 win.

Major news during this game, as Sandy Alcantara threw a perfect game against the Phillies.

Game 2: Drew Smyly vs Josiah Gray Gleyber Torres would hit a solo shot in the second, and Brandon Drury would hit a two run bomb in the third to put the Nationals up 3-0. Alec Mills would come in to start the fifth and keep the Nationals off the board until the bottom of the seventh, when Brandon Drury would hit another home run, and Lane Thomas would drive in Joey Meneses with a base hit. The Cubs’ aggressive approach from the get go would be their demise. They would not get their second base hit until the top of the ninth, and the game would be over just six pitches later after John Hicks struck out and Ian Happ hit into a double play. Josiah Gray would get the complete game shutout after giving up just two hits, walking none and striking out 6 and only needing 86 pitches to do it.

Game 3: Justin Steele vs Zach Davies Seiya Suzuki would put the Cubs up early with a solo homer on just the fifth pitch of the game. In the second, Christopher Morel would double and then score on a base hit by James Triantos. The Nationals would have their first scoring opportunity in the fourth, with men on second and third and one out, but the inning would end when Joey Meneses flew out to right and Seiya Suzuki threw out Ildemaro Vargas at the plate. The Cubs would continue to score in the sixth, as with no outs Nico Hoerner would single in Ian Happ, and Jesus Aguilar would double to score Seiya Suzuki and Hoerner (on a hit and run). That would be the end of the day for Zach Davies, who went just five innings, giving up five runs on 7 hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Kyle Finnegan would enter and prevent any further scoring, striking out two, hitting a batter, but eventually getting out of a bases loaded jam. The Nats would finally crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when Joey Meneses doubled to drive in Ildemaro Vargas. They would add another run in the eighth on a Brady House double off of Kyle Hendricks, but it was too little too late as Taylor Rogers would come in in the bottom of the ninth and get the save, despite giving up a base hit and a walk to bring up the tying run. The Nationals just couldn’t get their offense going in this one, and the Cubs played a better all around game.

Game Four: Adbert Alzolay vs Cade Cavalli Cavalli started out hot, striking out the first three batters he faced and striking out five of the first eight batters he faced. However, the Cubs would still score first after Jason Heyward doubled in David Bote in the third. The Nationals would answer in the bottom half of the inning when Keibert Ruiz would hit a solo shot to right, but Chicago would come back again in the top of the fourth when Jesus Aguilar drove in Nico Hoerner, who doubled in the previous at-bat. The Nats would answer again when Brady House would line a two run double just over Seiya Suzuki's outstretched glove to put Washington back on top 3-2. Cade Cavalli would not come out for the sixth as his pitch count was getting high, and he would finish with a line score of 5IP, 8 hits, two earned runs, a walk and eight strikeouts. Victor Arano, Sean Doolittle, Trevor Rosenthal and Aaron Bummer would shutout the Cubs over the last four innings to give Cavalli and the Nationals the game and series win. Rosenthal is the closer this year, but was brought in in the eighth to face batters that kill lefties, meaning Bummer would get the save opportunity for this game.

The Nationals have moved to 7-3 on the young season, but will get a real test now as Philadelphia comes to Washington for three games, followed by a trip to LA for four (with no off day in between) and then three in Colorado before coming back to DC to face Atlanta and St. Louis. In fact, five of the next six series are against teams that should be in the playoffs: Philly, LA, Atlanta, St. Louis, and Seattle.

D-Backs get sweep despite solid effort by young Pittsburgh team

The Pittsburgh Pirates have to be one of the MLB's youngest teams and unfortunately, their season has gone as one would think (41-75 after this series). Despite their inexperience, Pittsburgh was able to make games one and two competitive. Game one took Arizona 11 innings to put away the Pirates in a 3-2 victory. Game two saw Pittsburgh's rookie first baseman Aaron Shackelford hit his first two MLB homeruns to help Pittsburgh keep it close in the 7-6 Arizona victory.

Game three wasn't as close as Arizona got the sweep clinching victory 8-3. Carson Kelly hit two home runs in the series brining his MLB leading total to 42. Aaron Nola also increased his MLB leading mark with his 17th victory of the season.

Arizona's Michael Brantley and Josh Rojas combined to go 7 for 7 in game two of the series while Rojas totaled a 8 for 11 line during the series.

Arizona will now stay at home for three against the NL West's 5th place team, the San Francisco Giants who won two of three against Arizona just a week ago.
