MLB The Show 23 Gameplay Feature Premiere - Plenty of Details

Would like a graphical upgrade, but doesn’t impact gameplay. But I feel having wow graphics adds to the fun factor.

The throwing meter seems like it could add some much needed complexity to fielding. Wasn’t impressed with the hitting updates.

Weird, in Comerica, the Ty Cobb and Hank Greenberg statues are still missing. We’re taken out in 22 for some reason.

I still wish they'd add all the orange to the outfield at Comerica. I know it's Little Caesars ads in real life. Even if they don't have those in the game, they could at least add the orange instead of having it green.

Agreed. Maybe SDS will move the fences in next year and Comerica would get an upgrade. The fence move came in so recent I didn’t expect that to make it in this year.

I would guess it will be like Baltimore last season where the fence update is patched in shortly after release.

The throwing meter change has me intrigued. I was shocked when they said in previous years it was too easy, because it has been the complete opposite for me. Maybe I just plain suck at meter throwing but it always caused me make way too many throwing errors, trying to turn a double play was nearly impossible due to the timing of it.

The way it’s been changed makes sense to me, and might have been my problem this whole time that the meter didn’t really react to the type of play and throw. I’ll see if this theory plays out in the tech test and maybe I can start using meter throwing for a change and have more fun with it.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Gameplay Feature Premiere - Plenty of Details

Here's what I'll say. I know it seems like those of us that complain about the graphics (or really anything) don't like the game or think that it's not good, but really that could not be further from the truth. MLB The Show is by far my most played game, every year. If I didn't love the game, I wouldn't care enough to clamor for improvement in areas that I believe need it. It's only because I am looking at the game so much that I notice the things that I wish were better.

I know the saying about how gameplay is the most important thing, and graphics aren't as important. Generally I agree, but here's the thing. MLB The Show's gameplay is already stellar. And it has been for a long time. For me personally, its about as good as it'll get, any new tweaks or additions are cool, but they generally don't affect my enjoyment of the game much. I'm already perfectly satisfied in that department.

For me the reason I fell in love with baseball, it originally wasn't even the actual game itself but the aesthetics of it. I love the sights and sounds of it, the green of the grass, the crack of the bat, the uniqueness of every ballpark to the diversity of the players, and the beautiful simplicity of the uniforms. So when the things I feel most drawn to about the sport aren't captured in its only videogame representation, it bums me out a bit.

I'll give you that the stadiums and the sounds of this game are really quite great. Honestly the crack of the bat on a perfectly timed hit might honestly be my favorite feature, oddly enough. That and the truly remarkable stadium creator. I think I spend more time in that mode than playing the actual game. But besides the stadiums, what are we actually looking at when we play the game?

              The players and the field.

The two things that we are looking at for 90% of normal gameplay are the exact two things in the game that simply are not at the level of the rest of the game or the console generation it's in. The players models themselves, the uniforms they wear, and the field they play on. That's the reason those things get brought up so often. I'm not going to list the problems with them again I'm sure you've heard the complaints enough all over the board.

And part of the problem is with the new Negro League uniforms, they've shown the ability to do it, those uniforms look 100 times better than the ones on current players. It looked at first like they really went back to prioritizing the "aesthetics" of the game. The "little things". But alas it's only for those 8 players in that one (admittedly very cool) mode, and the vast majority of the game will still continue to look as it has for most of the last decade. I honestly don't think I'd be as bothered if they hadn't shown new NLB uniforms at all, just teasing me with what I could have, only to not let me have it, the way I want it.

You don't have to agree, if you don't have any issue with the graphics then I am truly happy for you. I'm honestly jealous. But the look of the sport is intrinsically tied to my love of the sport, and I want desperately for the game to be able to recreate that. It has in the past, but it's fallen behind and needs to catch back up.

We're still 5 weeks away from release... Couldnt they update the modern uniforms yet? Honestly Idk how any of this works with making a game.

I mean it does say this........... and more detail to uniforms and equipment.

Guess that could be talking about the Negro league uniforms? Idk

Not expecting baggy uniforms...no batting helmet....2021 audio names....for franchise...

Not excited about the Statistic window blocking the view of the ball park and field.

Hats off to the people involved with building the negro league amazing job.

Not sure what to do this year.

2022 was not a good year for me. Mother Nature wasn't kind when Lightning bolt came too close and fried my playstation 5 and all my work I have done the last 2 years. Not sure I have the energy or incentive maybe when they offer baggy uniforms and no helmet and lots of names for franchise. I will be back in the game but for now Maybe not so much.

I'd imagine its far too late for something like the player/uniform model to change before release. And yes it does say more detail to uniforms but based on the gameplay premiere there was nothing that actually stood out as different so its probably either very small scale, or just for the NLB players like you said.

This thread really made me miss the old OS where there was genuine excitement and love for this game.

I walked away from the stream looking forward to the new additions, tweaks and improvements. This team really listens to the community and tries to address things that need fixing. Of course, not everyone's requests and demands are going to be met but sometimes, hate to say it but, y'all are asking for a lot given the time and resources it's been made known to us several times by the devs themselves.

The premiere was about gameplay and the most liked comments in this thread are about the graphics. I may be in the minority but when I sit down and play this game, I thoroughly enjoy looking at it and just playing baseball.
Some of you are saying it should look like a real-life baseball broadcast that you are controlling on a console (not a PC). I've come to accept that I love this game and will continue to play it, why? Because the gameplay aspect is top notch, and it looks good to me.

I think the Operation Sports community I remember is long gone and frankly won't be coming back.
Some of us from the "old guard" of OS are still around, if not a little less active. But I am with you and I'm looking forward to the game this year. Are there things I am disappointed about? Of course. But The Show is still a great game to me, even in down years for the title. I play this title more than any other game during the year. And even with my complaints, I still find enjoyment in the game every year.

And yes, I'll get to my complaints down the road after the game is out but a lot of them will be repeats of past complaints. (Not bringing back YTY saves, no SOTS, etc.)

Isn't that kind of thinking what led us to the game being in this state though? We praised SDS for so long because they made the show a great game. But as many people have shown, the developers have added so little to the game that it's frustrating. We shouldnt praise them for adding small tweaks. Honestly most of the stuff they add could be patched in to 22 or 21 and we wouldnt be able to tell a difference in games.

People are allowed to like a game and still criticize it. We don't want an echo chamber just blindly praising SDS.

Do the devs ever interact anymore? Or ever answer why there are no graphical improvements year to year? It’s so far behind other sports games it’s ridiculous. Lack of competition has killed sports gaming. So sad.

Most of the items we talk about here appear to be things that dont seem to be that far fetched to implement in a next gen gaming system. im sure at some point most of those requests will happen but it is dissapointing for those who feel it was time for it to make it in. My biggest want has been redoing the AI Bullpen Logic over. for years its been terrible. the whole thing needs to be redone almost anyone whos played the game enough knows this. so i say that knowing that Sds has to know its just a poor system. so i myself wonder why this cant be done? like how much time and resources would it take? there has to be a better way to program a vital part of a baseball game. we all know baseball here and how important the bullpen choices are in a game, a series, a season, etc. i would be so happy for just this.

Until sports games go away from the yearly release schedule I really doubt we'll see a hugely overhauled game.

Unless they've been secretly been working on a new engine or something for a few years I imagine the game is going to look largely the same going forward.

Adding to that is this gen was a smaller leap forward than ever before I really think this might be as good as it looks.

Not that I think it looks bad tbh. It doesn't look at good as NBA but is probably on par with Madden/NHL l...with a lot more customization and better presentation to boot.
