Santa Fe, NM (AP) - The Hops managed to split a four game series in Santa Fe to stop the bleeding but this team has not won a series since early July as their lead in the ML West continues to shrink.
The Silver Bullets used the long ball, going deep five times, to hammer the Hops 9-3 in the series opener. Dezi Azerod went 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the victory.
Flagstaff grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an Emmitt Hampton RBI single.
The Silver Bullets would score three unearned runs in the second thanks to a two-out throwing error from pitcher Alex Farmer. Dezi Azerod had the big blow, a two-run home run immediately after the throwing error.
Emerson King hit a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 5-1. Barton and Donovan Pressley each homered in the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-1. A Ryan Williams solo home run in the seventh increased the Santa Fe lead to eight runs.
Flagstaff would get a couple of runs back late, but their offensive woes continued as they only managed six hits.
Jared Hughes (9-6) picked up the win, tossing seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Alex Farmer (9-7) took the loss for Flagstaff. He pitched five innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out six.
On Tuesday evening, the Hops returned the favor with a 9-3 victory. Art Mason broke out of his extended slump, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs in the victory.
After the Silver Bullets took a 1-0 lead in the first when Ramon Garcia walked in a run, the Hops exploded for four runs in the top of the second. Art Mason hit a three-run home run and Robbie Westbrook added a sacrifice fly.
The Hops would extend their lea din the fourth inning on Art Mason’s second home run of the ballgame. That solo shot was his 24th on the season.
A Donny Craig bloop RBI double in the bottom of the fifth cut the Flagstaff lead to 5-2. But the Hops answered right back in the top of the sixth with three of their own to put this one away. Josh Ortega hot a solo home run, his 33rd on the season to get the inning started. Art Mason would line an RBI single, scoring Oscar Aleman and David Benitez doubled home Mason.
Oscar Aleman’s fourth hit of the game in the ninth, scored the Hops ninth run as they are hoping that tonight’s win breaks them out of their offensive doldrums. The Silver Bullets committed a season high three errors in the game, leading to two unearned runs.
Ramon Garcia (9-5) picked up the win, throwing 92 pitches in five innings of work. He allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out one and walking three.
On Wednesday evening, the Hops got a solid pitching performance from ace Shoe-Lace O’Tying and rode the long ball to a 6-3 victory over the Silver Bullets.
Emmitt Hampton got things going early as he blasted a long two-run home run in the top of the first. Donnie Roland (11) and Isaac Nettles (1) then each hit solo shots in the second off of Pat Mehnutzak to put the Hop in front 4-0.
Santa Fe would take advantage of the one bad pitch from O’Tying all night in the bottom of the third as Jon Cooper hit a three-run home run to get the Silver Bullets back into this one.
Emmitt Hampton’s second home run of the night, and 27th on the season, would put the Hops back up by two in the top of the fifth. A Donnie Roland RBI single would give Flagstaff some breathing room as they cruised to the win.
Shoe-Lace O’Tying (11-8) pitched eight innings, allowing the three runs on three hits, while striking out five and walking three. Vic Miller had an easy 1-2-3 ninth to close this one out as he picked up his ML leading 36th save.
Santa Fe’s Pat Mehnutzak (12-5) took the loss, only working 4 1/3 innings. He allowed six runs on six hits while walking five and striking out four.
In the finale, the Silver Bullets hit six home runs and rallied for a wild 8-7 victory. An unearned run in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference and Santa Fe managed to pull out a series split.
The Silver Bullets grabbed a 2-0 lead immediately as Donovan Pressley and Avery Phillips hit back-to-back solo homers in the bottom of the first. An RBI single from Guerrero put the Silver Bullets up 3-0 after two innings.
Robbie Westbrook would get the Hops on the board in the third with a two-run home run. IN the fourth, Phillip Choi lined an RBI double to tie it and Robbie Westbrook followed with his second home run of the game to put the Hops up 5-3. Westbrook now has 28 home runs on the season.

Phillip Choi would hit a two-run blast to left in the sixth to give Flagstaff a three-run lead at 7-4 and it looked like they may pull out the series win. But three solo home runs in the bottom half of the inning: Avery Phillips (4), Emerson King (21), and Jamaal Crosby (21) would tie the game at 7-7.
Donovan Pressley would rob Art Mason of a home run in the top of the eighth to keep the game ties at 7-7.
In the bottom of the eighth, an error from Skyler Lyons allowed Emerson King to reach base. Barton and Crosby would each single with King scoring to put Santa Fe up 8-7. Aldo Osuna came on and worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep it at 8-7.
Santa Fe closer Lincoln Graham would work a 1-2-3 ninth against the top of the Flagstaff order to pick up his 36th save, tying him with Vic Miller for the ML lead.
The Hops (71-51) will return home to take on West Texas (61-62) and Santa Fe (68-54) in a six game home stand beginning tomorrow evening.
