Cardinals drop series to Rays in St.Louis

The Cardinals (61-55) lost 2 games of a 3 game series from the Rays in St.Louis to begin week. The Cardinals are now a game back of the Brewers in the NL Central. The Cubs and Reds are both just 3 games back, as the NL Central is the most intriguing division race as we head to the final weeks of the season.

The Cardinals lost Tuesday and Wednesday as the offense continues to slump. The Cardinals scored a total of three in the first two games while the pitching staff gave up 10. The Cardinals avoided the sweep on Thursday when they exploded for 12 runs on 8 hits, needing all 12 runs as they won a slugfest 12-11.

The Cardinals will now travel to Kansas City for a brief 2 game series with the Royals over the weekend.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Yes very fun with a healthy lineup. Makes me sad though thinking how much better they'd be real life if McLain was healthy this season. Now pitching is up and down lol. Team ERA of 4.42 says it all

Atlanta Braves 2024 National League Divisional Series vs Arizona Diamondbacks

How Arizona Got Here: A strong offense (seventh in runs scored) was led by Corbin Carroll (.884 OPS, 33 HR, 111 RBI, 38 SB, 5.1 WAR), Ketel Marte (.911 OPS, 22 HR, 5.4 WAR), and Chistian Walker (.821 OPS, 25 HR, 4.5 WAR) carried a pitching staff that only ranked 18th in baseball in ERA, as all the starters regressed and even the bullpen wasn’t great. But the combo was still enough for a 91-71 record to take the top wild card spot in the NL. In the Wild Card round, the Diamondbacks defeated the Chicago Cubs in two games by scores of 5-2 and 7-3.

Game One (in Atlanta): Things got off to an excellent start for the Braves, as a Michael Harris walk would lead to a stolen base and eventually getting knocked in by Austin Riley to give the Braves a 1-0 lead after the first inning. With Spencer Strider on the mound, the 2024 Cy Young winner had only given up 10 homers the entire season, but then gave up two in three pitches as Joc Pederson and Lourdes Gurriel went back-to-back in the second inning. The score would remain until the seventh inning, where Tyler Matzek would strike out two before walking a batter. Reynaldo Lopez would enter and give up two singles to load the bases, when he would make a mistake with a hanging curveball in a 2-2 count to Geraldo Pedermo, who would put it in the bleachers for a 6-1 lead they would never relinquish as the Braves just could not find grass in this game.

Result: Diamondbacks win 6-1 and go up 1-0 on the series.

Game Two: This was essentially a must win for Atlanta, and they came through when they needed to. Max Fried was a dog on the mound, working through trouble over six innings. He did leave the game down 1-0, as the offense worked counts really well but struggled to find a rhythm against Merrill Kelly. Things would change finally, as an Ozzie Albies homer tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and Michael Harris joined him in the next inning with a two-run bomb to give Atlanta a 3-1 lead. As the bullpen continued to work against a tough Arizona lineup, Atlanta got to work again and got the bases loaded before Jarred Kelenic and Sean Murphy each drew walks to bring in a fourth and fifth run. The Braves would hold on for a 5-1 win.

Result: Braves win 5-1 to tie the series at 1-1.

Game Three (@ Arizona): A huge swing game in a five game series, this was obviously a massive game for both teams. Things got off to a great start for Arizona, as despite Albies hitting a homer that was followed by one for Marcell Ozuna right after in the top of the second, the DBacks were up 4-2 after two innings with them finding holes against Chris Sale. The lefty settled down though, working into the sixth inning without allowing another run. Albies would reach the bleachers again with a solo shot off of Eduardo Rodriguez in the fourth to make it 4-3 in favor of Arizona. Both teams would be held scoreless through the seventh inning as the starters and bullpen kept finding ways to work out of trouble. Harris tied the game off of Mantiply with a massive shot in the eighth inning to tie it at 4. In the bottom of the ninth, Chris Martin would walk Eugenio Suarez before Jordan Lawler smacked a double with no outs. With guys on second and third, Tyler Matzek came in from the bullpen and got Ketel Marte to fly out to Acuna to hold the runner. Matzek then got Perdomo to lineout to Matt Olson, and with two outs would strike out Gurriel on four pitches to send it to the 10th inning. Arcia would deposit the first pitch from Kyle Nelson in the bleachers for a homer, with Riley joining him two batters later with a homer of his own. Raisel Iglesias would then come in and work a save in one of the most dramatic wins for Atlanta all season.

Result: Braves 6-4 in 10 innings. Atlanta up 2-1 in the series.

Game Four (@ Arizona): The drama of game three did not carry over here, as the emotional loss appeared to have took its toll on the Diamondbacks as Atlanta throttled them in an 11-1 win here. Charlie Morton (5.1 IP, 7 K, 0 ER) was lethal with his slider, while Ronald Acuna and Ozuna each went deep and combined for five RBI. The Braves totaled three walks and 15 hits, with Albies, Murphy (2), and Kelenic each joining the above with RBIs themselves. Dylan Lee gave up a homer to Joc Pederson in the ninth, but this was well in hand as Atlanta moves on to the NLCS.

Result: Braves win 11-1 and win the series 3-1.

Up Next: The National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers

                    _________________________________________

That game three was absolutely thrilling. When I brought Matzek in, I just knew there was no way I was going to be able to get out of that hole and I was going to have to win two games in a row. The curveball that struck out Gurriel will forever be etched in my sports game memory.

                        A's open series losing streak

Twenty days into June and the Oakland Athletics have won just six games in the month. Their latest series pitted them against one of the few teams to have fewer wins thus far in 2024. The first game gave the few Oakland faithful hope as Oakland took the 6-3 victory thanks to a strong first and fifth innings. During that fifth inning, Zack Gelof (13) and Miguel Andujar (9) went back to back to at the time give the A's the 6-0 lead. Kansas City had a pretty good attempt at a comeback but fell short.

Game two saw the A's again get out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but eventually, the game would go into extras tied 3-3. Later, into extras, the Royals scored five runs in the 12th inning to eventually go on to win game two, 9-5.

Kansas City was the ones who got out to an early lead in game three. Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt JR started the scoring in the first inning with a pair of doubles. Esteury Ruiz then tied the game in the third with his sixth homerun of the season. Then, KC would add one in both the fifth and sixth inning to take the 3-1 lead. A lead that the Athletics couldnt make up despite scoring one in the ninth as they lost 3-2.

The A's will now welcome Minnesota to Oakland for a three game set against the Twins (38-38/1st AL Central) who beat them 3-1 in their four game series just a week ago, in Minnesota.

Oakland had back to back series on the road in detroit and division rival texas. Taking 2 out of three Vs detroit, and losing two out of three against Texas.

Solid pitching in detroit led the way and they were just 2 outs from their first season sweep, but with regular closer Mason Miller getting a rest Erceg melted down and gave up 5 hits and 3 runs and giving the tigers a walkoff win.

Texas were solid on both sides with excellent hitting and pitching, winning the first two games by a collective score of 15-2. Oakland claimed the last game in a pitching duel between Cal Quantrall and Mad Max Sherzer.

First game back at home against Washington was a beauty. Washington leading 1-nil heading into the 9th with their closer Dylan Floro giving up a long ball to Shea Langaliers with 2 strikes and no balls let a sinker hang over the plate.

two more outs saw the hitless on the night Kike Hernandez at the plate. Hernandez crushed the first pitch slider over the LF wall for another massive, clutch hit and walkoff homer.

Kike Hernandez has been amazing in the first month, batting .286 but with 10 RBI's and 4 homeruns and so many of them in clutch moments.

Oakland are 2nd in the AL West in what is shaping up to be a very competitive division.

                            AL West Standings

Blue Jays sweep Rays in Toronto

                                Game 1 : TB 7-12 TOR
                                Game 2 : TB 8-9 TOR
                                Game 3 : TB 1-5 TOR

As the season is reaching the end of the month of May, Toronto sweep the Rays to increase their lead in the AL East to 7.0 games over the Yankees.

The first two games of the series were wild. On Friday, the Blue Jays took an 10-0 lead after 5 innings, behind a great outing by Alex Manoah only to see Toronto bullpen almost blew the lead when they allowed 7 runs combined.

On Saturday, Yusei Kikuchi left the game after 6 innings, allowing only 2 runs while the Blue Jays were leading 7-2. But the bullpen collapsed in the top of the 8th when the Rays scored 6 runs to take a 8-7 lead. Pete Fairbanks came to close the door but Davis Scheider had other ideas and went deep to tie the game before Vladimir Guerrero Jr single in center field to walk-off in the 10th.

Finally, Daulton Varsho & Vladimir Guerrero Jr, with each a 2-runs HR, led Toronto to the win and the sweep on Sunday.

The Blue Jays (35-11) remain at home for a 3 games series against the Chicago White Sox (16-32)
