Cardinals drop series to Reds in Cincinnati

The Cardinals (64-57) dropped 2 games of a 3 game series against the Reds in Cincinnati to begin the week. The Cardinals are now a half game back of the Brewers and just 2 games up on the Reds and Cubs in the wildcard.

Story as old as time, starting pitching is decent and the bullpen implodes. Are pitching pitches well and the offense couldn't hit water falling out of a boat. The Cardinals scored 7 runs this series, five of those coming in the win on Wednesday.

The Cardinals will host the Dodgers this weekend for a 3 game series.

Harrison Bader to the IL with back issues

The Cardinals have placed Harrison Bader on the 10 Day IL due to back issues. Bader left Wednesday's game with the Reds. Bader has struggled this year at the plate but his glovework has been gold glove standard.

Alex Idersnia was recalled Memphis to fulfill the vacant roster spot.

        Cardinals drop series to Dodgers

The Cardinals (65-59) dropped 2 games of a 3 game series with the Dodgers in St.Louis over the weekend. The Cardinals are still just a half game back of the Brewers in the NL Central and lead the Cubs and Reds by 2 games each for the third wild card.

The Cardinals were shutout on Friday as Yamamoto pitched a complete game shutout yielding just 2 hits while striking out 12. Cooper Hjerpe made his 3rd start of the season after replacing injured Kyle Gibson. Hjerpe served well against the Dodger lineup going 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and striking out 5, including Shohei Ohtani in both plate appearances. The Cardinals would fall 4-0.

Saturday saw a wild game where the two teams combined for 23 runs, 35 hits and 8 homeruns. The Dodgers got out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings on Miles Mikolas. The Cardinals would tie the game in the 3rd with a 5 run inning that saw back to back to back homeruns off of Clayton Kershaw by O'Neill, Nootbaar and Brandon Donovan. In the 6th the Dodgers would go back ahead 8-5 only for the Cardinals to tie in the 7th. In the 9th the Dodgers scored 3 to go up 11-8. In the bottom of the inning the Cardinals would score 4 runs capped off by Willson Contreras walk off single to win the game 12-11.

Sunday was less exciting. The Cardinals would lead 3-0 going into the 8th with Liberatore pulled. Jo Jo Romero would walk the bases loaded and Jordan Hicks was one out, one pitch away from getting out the jam, but hung a 2-2 slider to Will Smith who launched a grand slam. The Cardinals wouldn't put another runner on base, losing 4-3.

The Cardinals remain home as they welcome the Brewers to town for a key matchup for the NL Central Division lead.

The Cardinals (5-5) lose 2 out of 3 to the Marlins and welcome in the Phillies (7-2).

New GM MizzouRah makes his first moves of the 2024 season, sending down OF Jordan Walker to AAA and signing 3B Evan Longoria to a 1yr, $3.5M contract.

Walker was hitting .200 and was in a platoon role to start the 2024 season. "Jordan needs to play everyday and we just don't have an everyday spot for him right now at the MLB level" GM MizzouRah added.

"Signing Longoria gives us depth at 1B/3B and a veteran RH bat off the bench", commented MizzouRah.

After the Cubs walkoff game three and we start the month of June with a heartbreaking loss the managers have seen enough.

              Cincinnati Reds roster transactions

              ● Reds sending down RP Ian Gibaut to triple A. Ian has had 28 appearances giving up whopping 45 hits. 1.54 WHIP, and a 6.08ERA to boot.

~RP Buck Farmer is called up to replace Gibaut. Buck in triple A has 30 appearances. Only 16 hits given up with a 0.59ERA. Reds hopeful his great start can continue in the majors.

              ● Reds also bringing back up SP Graham Ashcraft. Graham recently just off IL stint, getting injured while in the minors early on this season.

~ P Nick Martinez will be placed in the bullpen as Graham takes his spot in the rotation. Martinez has struggled as a SP this season. In 12 starts he has a 4.83era and has really struggled giving up homeruns, allowing 12 already. Same amount he gave up in 63 appearances last year.

              ● RP Lucas Sims sent down to triple A. 29 appearances he had a 4.88era and 1.27 whip.

Cubs fans how many times have we seen this happen this season? I guess art imitates life. Going to the bottom of the ninth in Pittsburgh leading the Pirates 5-0, in my Cubs franchise. I bring in Alzolay to close it out and he does the exact opposite. Gives up two runs and has runners on the corners while only recording one out. So I make the switch for Keegan Thompson and the lead is gone after one pitch. I had nothing for Bednar in the top of the tenth and then lose it in the bottom half.

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

The Phillies (7-2) took Game 1 of the series from us, 9-2 and dropped us to (5-6).

Game 2 Kyle Gibson would face Zach Wheeler. Both pitchers were magnificent, Gibson would allow 1 run on 3 hits and Wheeler would take a perfect game into the 6th inning, only to be broken up by newly acquired 3B/DH Evan Longoria.

The Cardinals bullpen would hold the 1-0 Phillies lead and Wheeler would take his low pitch count into the 9th inning, vying for a complete game shutout.

Wheeler would get the first out and then Brendan Donovan, the Cardinals best hitter so far in 2024, would crush a fastball over the CF wall, his 1st of the season.

In the 10th, Helsley would work his 2nd perfect inning in a row and the Cardinals would start the bottom of the 10th with pinch runner, Dylan Carlson on 2nd base and Wilson Contreras at the plate.

Contreras would smash a homerun off Jeff Hoffman to walk it off and give the Cardinals a 3-1 win. It was also Contreras first HR of the season.

This is hands down the best sports game on current gen. They capture the sport better than any other sports game to date on CG. The ups and downs, the agony of defeat, the jubilation of winning on a walk off. The attention to detail game play has is really something SDS should be proud of. I enjoyed 23, but they have definitely tweaked 24 in many areas of game play.

                      2024 Oakland Athletics 06/28-06/30

Overall Record: 39-47 (5th AL West/15.0 behind Texas Rangers)

                      Game Results:

                      Game 1
                      Diamondbacks-6
                      Athletics-5

                      Game 2
                      Athletics-4
                      Diamondbacks-1

                      Game 3
                      Athletics-6
                      Diamondbacks-1

A's winning streak comes to an end but they remain hot

The Oakland Athletics finish June on a three series winning streak. In that same stretch, they have won eight of nine.

Pitching has been a big part of their recent success and that continued for the most part in their most recent series win against the defending NL champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

The A's one loss came in the first game of the series. That loss snapped a six game winning streak but they were still close to winning it.

Mason Miller got his second start since he was moved to the starting rotation to replace the struggling Ross Stripling. Unfortunately, this time, Miller did get hit around a bit. He lasted just 5.1 innings while he allowed 10 hits and 4 runs while he only stuck out 4.

The offense wasn't great but did enough to at least give Miller the no decision. Unfortunately, relievers, Scott Alexander and Zach Jackson each gave up a run to eventually give the D-Backs the 6-5 victory. That 6th run came via a Jake Mccarthy walkoff homerun, his first of the year.

Game two started as quite the pitchers duel between Hogan Harris (Oakland) and Eduardo Rodriguez (Arizona). Rodriguez was especially sharp as he didn allow a hit until the fifth inning. Unfortuantely for him, even with out a hit, Oakland was able to get a run in the fourth inning.

That happened after Zack Gelof and Miguel Andujar reached base with a walk and a hit by pitch. The next batter was Shea Langeliers who hit a ball to the pitcher, Rodriguez who made a nice play and threw Andujar out at second. The second baseman, Lourdes Gurriel JR however did not make a nice throw as he tried to throw out Langeliers for the double play. In fact, his throw sailed into the D-Backs dugout which gave Gelof two bases and the A's first run of the inning. Rodriguez went on to allow just one hit in six strong innings.

The Athletics then scored three in the 7th. Two of those came via Jordan Diaz's 8th homerun of the season and Arizona was only able to manage one run as the Athletics took game two, 4-1.

Oakland then went on to have their best offensive game of the series in game three as they won, 6-1 to take the series victory.

The A's will look to keep it going as they head into July. Their first matchup see's them return home where they have struggled this year (16-25). They will however face the Angels (45-38/4th AL West) who they swept in the series before Arizona.

Cardinals sweep Brewers to take over NL Central Lead

The Cardinals (68-59) swept the Brewers in a 3 game series in St.Louis and now lead the NL Central Division. The Cardinals are 2.5 games up on the Brewers and 4 games up on the Cubs, and 4.5 on the Reds.

The Cardinals did it with pitching. Jack Flaherty, Sonny Gray, and Cooper Hjerpe all went at least 7 innings in their respective victories. The Cardinals outscored the Brewers 17-5 during the 3 game series. Nolan Gorman got right at the plate recording 5 hits with 2 homeruns and a double in the series. Tyler O'Neill swung at strong bat as well homering in all 3 games.

The Cardinals will now head to Minnesota for a 3 game weekend series with the AL Central leading Twins.

                            August 15-18, 2024: FORT WORTH (68-59) @ FLAGSTAFF (60-67)
                            Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 13,406)

                            August 15: Kings 7, Hops 5
                            August 16: Hops 5, Kings 1
                            August 17: Hops 9, Kings 8 (11)
                            August 18: Hops 2, Kings 1

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff's red-hot play continued as they returned home and took three of four from Fort Worth as they continue to inch their way towards playoff contention as the season winds down.

The Kings opened up a critical four game series in Flagstaff with a big 7-5 victory over the Hops. Chris Carlisle went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a huge two-run home run to help lead the Kings to the win.

Flagstaff would jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Roberto Geronimo RBI double, scoring Thomas Sanders.

Russell Fluty danced out of trouble the first two innings, stranding runners in scoring position, but it caught up to him in the third as the first five batters reached and scored as the Kings jumped out to a 5-1 lead. P.J. Woodson doubled and Pedro Felix singled. Chris Carlisle then lined a double down the left field line to score both runners. Randy Klaus doubled home Carlisle and Cal Velasco launched a two-run home run to right to give the Kings a four run lead.

But the frisky Hops responded with three of their own in the fourth to cut it to 5-4. David Benitez lined a two-out RBI single to left to score Forrest Owen. Thomas Sanders then singled home David Petrovski and David Benitez and we had ourselves a ballgame.

Manager Matt Blake then may have stuck with Russell Fluty for one batter too long in the sixth as his starter was tiring. Chris Carlisle launched a two-out, two-run home run off of Fluty to right, his 23rd on the year, to put the Kings up 7-4.

Flagstaff had some great chances though to get back in it. They had two men on base in the sixth, seventh and eighth, failing to score each inning. In the ninth, Thomas Sanders hit a solo home run to open the inning, cutting the lead to 7-5 off of closer Freddie Crawford. Ryan Kelly then walked. Emmitt Hampton hit a rocket to right, but right at Pedro Feliz. Roberto Geronimo then laced one to left but right at Cal Velasco. Richie Jackson then pinch hit for Isaac Nettles and struck out looking to end the ballgame as Crawford picked up his 40th save on the season.

Russell Fluty (5-12) took the loss and was shaky at times, allowing seven runs on 12 hits, striking out five. Sam Varela was excellent in relief, getting the final ten outs while allowing just one hit. Steven Burke (2-2) picked up the win in relief a Douglas Matsui who allowed four runs on eight hits in just four innings, striking out three, but walking three.

On Friday evening, the Hops bounced back behind a great pitching perfomance from Geraldo Rodriguez as they defeated the Kings 5-1. Rodriguez (6-9) tossed eight plus innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out six and not issuing a walk.

The Hops would take the lead in the fourth on a solo home run from none other than red-hot Emmitt Hampton. It was his 25th on the season.

They would extend that lead in the sixth, scoring four times to blow the game open. Ryan Kelly led off the inning with a solo home run off of Gabriel Carmona. It was his 15th on the season and ended Carmona's night. Emmitt Hampton singled and Robbie Westbrook doubled off of reliever Jay Huseby. Forrest Owen then hit a hanging slider 438 feet onto the administration building in left to make it 5-0. The home run was his 16th on the season.

Fort Worth was held scoreless by Rodriguez into the ninth when George Newman homered to left. Newman broke up Rodriguez's perfect game with a single to lead off the sixth. Pedro Macias would come on to clean up as the Hops continue to play excellent baseball down the stretch.

On Saturday afternoon, the Hops hit five home runs and won it on a walk-off home run from Forrest Owen as they defeated the Kings 9-8. The Hops continue to look like a team that could play spoiler down the stretch as they beat Fort Worth for the fourth time in six tries over the last week.

This one was a wild one right off the bat. Roberto Geronimo (25) and Robbie Westbrook (14) hit back-to-back home runs in the second to put the Hops up 2-0.

Fort Worth got both of those runs right back off of Ryan Pressley. Pablo Feliz doubled home Harris and Randy Klaus lined a two-out single to right that scored Feliz to tie the game up. Roberto Geronimo would put the Hops back up in the bottom half as he hit a two-run triple with two outs on a ball that landed between three players and none of them could come up with it.

The Kings would tie it up in the fifth on a Randy Klaus two-run home run, also with two outs.

Flagstaff immediately responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half. Emmitt Hampton hit a two-run home run to right, his 26th, to put the Hops up 6-4. Forrest Owen then lined a two-out, RBI single to center to score Robbie Westbrook, who had singled and stole second.

The Hops turned to the bullpen, bringing in the lefty Kenneth Valdez, but the normally reliable middle man was anything but on Saturday afternoon. Rickey Moran lined a double that scored Tim Ferreira. Harris would ground out, but Graham scored to cut the lead to 7-6. Newman then singled home Moran with two outs to tie the game at 7-7.

Once again, the Hops answered right back. This time, Bradley York hit a solo home run to left to put Flagstaff up 8-7.

It would stay that way until the ninth as the Hops brought in closer Vic Miller. He would surrender a game tying solo home run to Randy Klaus, his second of the game and 28th on the season, to tie the game at 8-8. For Miller, it was his sixth blown save.

In the 11th, Forrest Owen led off by blasting the first pitch that he saw over the wall in left to walk it off and send the home crowd home happy. It was his 17th on the season.

Aldo Osuna (4-4) picked up the win, pitching two scoreless innings. Ryan Pressley did not have his best stuff, picthing five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. He only struck out one and walked three, but left with a three run lead.

Robbie Westbrook stole a base in the fifth. It was his league leading 33rd on the year.

Randy Klaus went 3 for 5 with two homers and four RBIs in the loss. Tim Ferriera went 4 for 6 with a double and a run scored for the Kings.

On Sunday afternoon, the Hops managed to get another great pitching perfomance from Cy Young contender Alex Farmer as they defeated the Kings 2-1 to take three of four from the Wild Card leaders in the Mountain League. Farmer (17-4) pitched six innings, allowing one run on just two hits, striking out five and not walking a batter.

Flagstaff would take a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Ryan Kelly solo home run, his 16th on the year. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the third on a solo home run from Robbie Westbrook, his 15th.

Fort Worth would get a first inning single from Chris Carlisle and a sixth inning solo home run from Stephen Park as their only hits of the ballgame. Wyatt Nelson (8-9) took the loss, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked three.

Pedro Macias tossed two scoreless and hitless innings of relief, striking out four. Vic Miller worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 28th save.

The Hops (60-67) will have Monday off before hosting Surprise (68-58) for a quick two game series to end the homestand.

Around the League: Chandler's Carl Lentzkow went 2 for 4 with a double, home run and drove in two runs as the Chiefs pounded Glendale 7-1 in the opener of their weekend series. Steven Escobar (12-8) pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out nine and walking five.

El Paso defeated Prescott on Thursday afternoon 4-2, taking three of four from the Hot Shots as they remain the hottest team in the IBL. Josh Hawk had three hits including a homer (30) and Omar Chavez hit a two-run home run (14) to pace the Express to the win.

Rio Rancho's Rollie Flingers (16-5) tied Alex Farmer for the ML lead in wins on Thursday afternoon as the Owlz defeated Salt Lake 5-0 to sweep the Chukars. Flingers went the distance, allowing five hits, striking out nine and walking two.

Scottsdale opened up a huge three-game weekend series in Surprise with a 7-3 victory over the Saguaros. Felix Ramirez led the way, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs to help extend the Scorpions lead in the DL Central to five games over Surprise.

San Diego knocked out 17 hits in a 17-1 thrashing of the Jack Rabbits in Goodyear. Felipe Rios went 3 for 6 with a double, home run (15) and six RBIs to lead the way for the first-place Seals.

Amarillo's Roger O'Brien (4-13) tossed 8.1 innings of shutout baseball, scattering two hits, and striking out two as the Honey Hunters shutout West Texas 7-0 in one of the few bright spots in 2024. The Honey Hunters are (42-81) as they try to avoid a 100 loss season. They are (3-11) in August and (7-20) since the All-Star break. The Honey Hunters have finished last in the ML East each of their two seasons.

Gilbert's new toy Carlos Quinones will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a broken forearm that he suffered in the first inning of their victory over Mesa on Thursday evening. Quinones came over from West Texas in July and has been fantastic at the top of the lineup for the Barnstormers. They currently sit five games out of a Wild Card spot in the Desert League.

Scottsdale completed the sweep of second-place Surprise on Sunday afternoon as Lee Lim hit a 12th inning grand slam, his second home run of the game and 30th on the season, as the Scorpions defeated the Saguaros 8-4. Lim drove in six runs, hitting a two-run home run in the seventh also. The Scorpions are now seven games clear of the Saguaros and look in control in the DL Central.

Austin has lost star second baseman Luke Jordan for the remainder of the season with a fractured leg that he injured sliding into second base on Sunday afternoon in a 5-3 victory over Henderson. Jordan who has only played 43 games in an injury plagued season was hitting .255 with six home runs and 13 RBIs.

Toronto won on Monday behind a stellar performance by José Berrios who threw a complete game shutout (0 BB, 9 Ks).

Unfortunately for the Blue Jay, Chris Bassit had a disastrous day on the mound in the second game of the series, lasting only 2 innings (4 ER, 2 walks, 1 K). Cardinals lose series to Twins fall back behind Brewers

The Cardinals (69-61) lost two games of their three game series with the Twins in Minnesota over the weekend. They now find themselves a half game back of the Brewers as the back and forth battle between the 2 teams continues. The Reds 3.5 and Cubs 4, are right there in the mix.

The Cardinals won on Friday night. Miles Mikolas was great on the hill tossing 8 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. He was helped by strong bats from Edman and Contreras who combined to drive in 6 of the Cardinals 7 runs.

Saturday and Sunday would not be so great. Matthew Liberatore looked like he was pitching batting practice as by the time he left with one out in the 2nd inning, the Twins had scored 9 runs on 8 hits. The Cards pushed across 4 runs offensively, but that wasn't nearly enough in the lopsided 12-4 loss.

Sunday was Jack Flaherty tossing 7 scoreless innings. Unfortunately the offense was scoreless as well. Jo Jo Romero gave up a RBI single to Carlos Correra for the only run scored in a 1-0 loss.

The Cardinals head home as they welcome the Padres to town for a 4 game series before heading to the Bronx to close out August against the Yankees.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
